Hello Joe!
Tell Meg & buddies to come to Cologne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am sphere:

i really really like Heron Oblivion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

Sounds like a great gig for the guitar obsessed.
  9:31am Karen:

Love this band and the show this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Guido from Cologne:

esp. known guitar finger-picker switching to drums ...
Avatar 9:34am bobdoesthings:

never cared for the word "boogie" .. sounds gross.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Ike:

Too much like "booger"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Guido from Cologne:

Carlton Melton IS A BAND-NAME ! :-)
Avatar 9:36am βrian:

What about "bugger"? It's a rather innocuous term on this side of the pond.
Avatar 9:38am bobdoesthings:

@ike - yeah i guess that's it.like a child talking about his boogers..
Endless Boogie, however, pretty solid band the bit I've heard.
Avatar 9:41am Joe McG:

Thanks, Guido! :)
Avatar 9:42am Marc Francis:

Howdy Joe! Howdy all!
Swag For Life Member 9:44am tadpoles:

The Chills - a gig I'd love to see. Wear my leather jacket.
Avatar 9:45am Joe McG:

@tadpoles: Which you love!
Avatar 9:49am Marc Francis:

I just went to the Chills website to see where else they were playing (hoping for a Montreal show) and they only have 2014 listed!
Avatar 9:50am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Joe and Club McGasko.
You be Chillin' this am, JMc. :-D
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

@Sem: Ha ha! That's because I'm broadcasting from Chilltown (Jersey City's nickname--I'm not kidding!)
Avatar 9:52am Sem Chumbo:

Ha Ha right back. Chilltown, really? Gotta look into that.
Swag For Life Member 9:52am tadpoles:

I know they're playing in Britain in June. My brother's off to see them - lucky bugger.
Avatar 9:54am djsheilab:

Mornin' Joe! I'm getting my long overdue Chills education. One beauty after the next!
Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

Hey, Sheila B.! Recovered from that weekender?!
Avatar 10:00am djsheilab:

@Joe McG The sunshine, warm weather + your tunes are definitely helping :)
Avatar 10:01am bobdoesthings:

monkchant cover!?
Avatar 10:03am Joe McG:

Aw, thanks, Sheilab!
Avatar 10:05am Marc Francis:

Alrighty. See ya later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Parq:

Bobdoes and Ike, @9:34-35:
Avatar 10:09am Ear Hammer:

This Lorraine Ellison is doing "it" for "me." Excellent tune!
Avatar 10:12am Joe McG:

Hey, EH! How are you this morning?
Avatar 10:14am Ear Hammer:

hangin' and bangin' THE USUAL. You?
Avatar 10:14am Joe McG:

@EH: Spinnin' and chillin'. AS USUAL! :)
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

Chilltown: It's where you go to get your freon.
Avatar 10:16am Ear Hammer:

This soul set is exquisite! Should we expect a turn toward the (rrrrrr) later on in the show? I'm trying to be delicate and not incite a riot due to spoilers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Parq:

The Independents track is something. Joe, superb but relatively obscure soul is really one of your fortes.
Avatar 10:19am Sem Chumbo:

Love this interlude, sweet x 10.
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

@EH: Not sure! It's either going to be funky country or folky or rocking. I'm leaning towards Tribute Land. @Parq: Thanks, Parq! Nice to have you aboard.
  10:19am Brendan:

The soul song monologue was a great musical device
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Parq:

Joe, you should do a Downtown Soulville fill-in sometime. DJ Trouble (who also has a finger on the pulse of great and under-exposed soul) did one once, and it kicked hind.
Avatar 10:22am djsheilab:

Ahhhh....this song is heaven!
Avatar 10:23am Joe McG:

@Parq: I'd love to! High flattery indeed.
Avatar 10:25am Cecile:

Avatar 10:28am Cecile:

Janis had great taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe.
Start the week as you would like to end it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Guido from Cologne:

ooooh Marion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

Nice one, Guido.
  10:35am P-90:

All this and Marion too! Great job this morning as always, @DJ Joe McG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am JP from KC:

Morning, all. I'd take UK Brian's advice, but my employer frowns on drunkenness at the office this early in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Marcel M:

"the best man but only at your wedding." Nice turnaround!
  10:38am P-90:

@Parq: inspired suggestion, for Joe to take a turn on DT Soulville.
Avatar 10:38am Sem Chumbo:

Hmm, I guess This Diamond Ring has a subtext for Gary.
Avatar 10:39am Joe McG:

Thanks, P-90! @BrianUK: Good advice! @Marcel: I also love the Beach Boys-y Leslie'd keyboards on that record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Brian in UK:

WILMA, said Fred.
Avatar 10:40am Sem Chumbo:

Bud and Wilma: doesn't sound very focus-grouped to me, branding--wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Brian in UK:

Sorry WILMA bawled Fred.
Avatar 10:41am Cecile:

that song kind of creeped me out. I can't explain why.
  10:41am melinda:

I was thinking something along those lines too, Sem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am pantz:

Love this Duke Ellington song! I can picture my grandma singing it and waltzing around the kitchen.
Avatar 10:43am Sem Chumbo:

I wonder if Ellington and John Wayne ever got into a tussle over who would be called *Duke*?
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@pantz: What a sweet picture! The 45 is a little crackly, but it's from 1949, so we have to cut it some slack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Sem - Duke Kahanamoku, the surfing legend, would also want to get in on that.
  10:47am P-90:

"Searching for Heaven": super 80's-sounding record. Watery chorus on everything, Debbie Harry-influenced vocals, etc. etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am sphere:

Rockwell has a very troubled relationship with technology.
Avatar 10:48am Sem Chumbo:

hehe, nice one, KfHP. Spelling and everything.
Avatar 10:49am Cecile:

strange song but still sadly relevant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am pantz:

@sphere an obvious paranoid as well
Avatar 10:49am Cheri Pi:

Deep (to me) Rockwell cut!
  10:49am Brendan:

Joe we traced the Rockwell and its coming from inside the studio! Omg! Run for your life!
Avatar 10:49am djsheilab:

Loving these 2 back-to-back 80s tracks!
Avatar 10:50am Sem Chumbo:

I half expect this to break into a Hall and Oates thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am sphere:

Rockwell is polite though. the Caller is "Mr. or Miss."
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

the backup vocals make it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am pantz:

Poor guy probably sees spies in his soup.
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

@Brendan: AHHHHHHHHH! Help! @Cheri Pi: Great tragedy: The Upper Crust brought NO MERCH with them to Monty Hall on Saturday night, so I couldn't get you that shirt. :(
  10:51am Blix:

Rockwell...the Thomas Pynchon of '80s r&b pop. "Somebody watching me" was him too, wasn't it?
Avatar 10:52am Cecile:

Rockwell was Berry Gordy's son. He probably heard "can you give this tape to your dad" ever since he was in diapers.
Avatar 10:52am Cheri Pi:

Oh noes! Well it makes sense, t-shirts are rather pedestrian
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@Cheri Pi: I really hoped they would be selling powdered wigs.
Avatar 10:54am Cecile:

at least garters!
  10:55am P-90:

Rockwell: The Motown Thomas Dolby.
Avatar 10:55am βrian:

Speaking of upper crust, it's Rhubarb Pie Monday at our house. I can't wait!
Avatar 10:56am PKNY:

According to Rockwell Wikipedia page, he got his contract with Motown without his father's knowledge. I find that hard to believe.
  10:57am Brendan:

Speaking of Holiday are you around next week Joe?
Avatar 10:57am Cecile:

yum yum rhubarb!

this is pretty watered-down Nazareth. the 80s were kind of awful to old-school hard rockers.
Avatar 10:58am Cecile:

PKNY, it was pre-Internet. It's entirely possible.
Avatar 10:58am PKNY:

And on the album with "Somebody's Watching Me", he does a cover of "Taxman". How could I have make it this far in life without hearing that.

If someone at WFMU decides to do a 3 hour set of "Taxman" covers, that better be featured!
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Yeah, I'll be here for my Memorial Day special. Once I decide on what that is, we'll be in good shape! Best songs of WWII? Songs about the deceased? Only songs by people who are no longer with us? Anyone have any ideas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Brian in UK:

Goodbye Lonnie.

Got to cut and run, Joe. Away next week, sees you later. Have a good week everyone.
Avatar 10:59am Cecile:

how about a summer party vibe? Because soldiers go fight wars and dream about coming home to barbeques and pool parties and normalcy.
Avatar 10:59am Cheri Pi:

Were they doing facial mole painting at the very least?
Avatar 11:00am Joe McG:

@Cecile: That's not a bad idea. I have a feeling Joe Belock will be there before me, though (he lives for summer). @CP: Of course! And white powder.
Avatar 11:01am Joe McG:

BTW, the Upper Crust and Figgs were videoed, so you should see something up on the site eventually...
  11:01am Dean:

Songs with "memory," "memorial," "remember," etc., in their titles.
Avatar 11:01am Cecile:

most everyone loves summer. Keep the summer fun going!
Avatar 11:02am Cecile:

How about all blues, soul and rock songs about fish fries and barbeques?
Avatar 11:02am Cecile:

billboard still has some life left to it.
Avatar 11:03am Cecile:

please do!
  11:04am Dean:

Saw Robbie Dunbar play at a local pub a year or two ago.
  11:07am KP:

I saw Lonnie Mack open for the Doors at the Felt Forum. He was also in on some of their sessions.
  11:11am briaboy:

Please talk less and play music....
Avatar 11:12am Joe McG:

@briaboy: Here we go....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Guido from Cologne:

Finishing work now.
Nice to see the lyric notes appreciated!
CU Joe and thanks 4 the entertainment.
Will be on a reading by Viv Abertine (Slits) tonight.
That's gonna be interesting for the "audience-questions" part of it (her book reads like a novel).
Avatar 11:16am Joe McG:

@Guido: Her book was great! I'm sure the Q&A will be really interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am pantz:

OOOOH! I gotta read that. What's the title @guido ?
Avatar 11:18am Sem Chumbo:

Torch and Twang, what range! Love it.
Avatar 11:18am βrian:

This reminds me that there are flies in the kitchen, and that I can hear 'em there buzzin'.
Avatar 11:18am djsheilab:

I think you strike the perfect balance between speaking + playing records @JoeMcG.
Avatar 11:19am βrian:

@Sem: Cat names!
Avatar 11:19am Joe McG:

Thanks, Sheila! :)
Avatar 11:20am βrian:

And such dulcet pipes, Joe!
Avatar 11:21am Sem Chumbo:

haha, @ βrian.
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

@Brian: Aw, you guys! Appreciate the support. I actually don't really talk that much, I don't think! Could be a lot worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am doctorjazz:

Also like hearing you speak at the mike break
fine Mack tribute!
Avatar 11:25am Joe McG:

@doctor: Thanks! Yeah, the show's suddenly sprouted some hair on its chest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Michael 98145:

Great Mack track!
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

Mack attack!
  11:28am Dean:

Never realized that the opening to Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" was a Lonnie Mack tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Mister Dobalina:

Thanks for the Mack schoolin' set, I needed it. Now I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Mick:

Thank you thank you thank you for the Lonnie Mack tribute. Much appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Parq:

Way-dug that Dylan cover.
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

@Dean: I think he might've cribbed it from somewhere else. Sounds a little like "Turn On Your Love Light" or something. @Dobalina and Mick: You bet! His catalog is really rich, full of gems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Parq:

"New Morning" is *such* an underrated Dylan album.
  11:32am P-90:

When Prince and Lonnie Mack died on the same day, I knew I would have to be patient, that some FMU DJs would do some Lonnie Mack tributage by and by.
Avatar 11:33am Cecile:

Same here Mr. Dobalina. I didn't know that much about him. This is great and RIP Lonnie.
Avatar 11:34am Cecile:

damn, dude can blow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Michael 98145:

That's why we come to WFMU
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

he did - I remember not being able to keep his stuff in stock in Ann Arbor.
Avatar 11:37am Cecile:

no, keep playing Lonnie
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

ok, if it's Guy Clark.
Avatar 11:38am madman:

Avatar 11:38am Joe McG:

Sorry, Cecile, this is where I want to go.
Avatar 11:38am Joe McG:

HEY Madman!
Avatar 11:41am Cecile:

S'cool, Joe. I said OK, if it's Guy Clark.
Avatar 11:41am Cecile:

  11:41am melinda:

I didn't know much about Guy Clark but serendipitously found a copy of the Heartworn Highways documentary at the public library last week and I'm in the process of watching it. It is good.
Avatar 11:42am βrian:

Heartworm Highways? Oh dear.
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Ha ha, no problem! @melinda: Great movie! I'll play a song from it next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am MD:

Nice Lonnie Mack Stuff! Thanks Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Ken From Hyde Park:

The Memorial Day show just might end up being a memorial tribute to all the artists we've lost in the past year. Lord knows we've lost quite a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am annie:

i never realized how much guy clark's influence was... i love all his songs..
Avatar 11:44am madman:

Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

@Ken: Yeah, I think I'm doing my Memorial Day show right now! Thanks for all of your suggestions, everyone, btw.
Swag For Life Member 11:45am tadpoles:

madman made me think Joe...would it be too egomaniacal to do a show of (or a segment of) "Hey Joe" covers ... if there are enough??
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

Texas cooking! that's great Memorial Day song.

Texas cooking is something. Good food down there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am coelacanth:

Thanks for the Guy Clark songs; 'wish i'd caught the Lonnie Mack.

Astonishing songwriting skills + polished performer. Hurts to lose these guys.
Avatar 11:51am Joe McG:

Glad you guys are enjoying the Tribute Hour. Guy Clark was a helluva great live performer. I had the good fortune to see him a number of times. Never saw Lonnie Mack, sadly.

I'm a huge JJ Cale fan, and this sort of stuff is right up my alley. Actually, JJ Cale is my absolute favorite, EVER!

God bless Guy Clark-
My parents wore those first 2 records out in the mid 70s-
Those songs are heavy shit for little kid.

"Really?" is a perfect album.

I have seen the David, Mona Lisa and Doc Watson too. Not sure about the Columbus Stockade Blues.

I am going to see Beyonce in a big football stadium tonight, Joe. Words I never imagined myself typing. The things we do for love.

@Joe McG: Thanks for a great show, outdid yourself in this last hour!

"Heartworm Highways": wasn't that a Hartz Mountain advertising jingle?
Avatar 12:00pm Cecile:

Walgreen's has a fine selection of ponchos. I'd splurge for a couple.
