Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm rbxbx:

the soft and gloomy vibes were a good lead in for today, but I'm enjoying this pick me up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Ĩkє:

@rbxbx, maybe no emoji, but you *can* copy and paste ridiculous ASCII characters and symbols into here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm rbxbx:

@Ike: orly? ✰
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm mariano:

Yeah, it was 45 and overcast yesterday morning when I was on my way to work in Manhattan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm 1ke:

Avatar 12:52pm βrian:

Those aren't ASCII, technically. But they are plain text, in our brave new unicode world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm mariano:

Any connection between Thee Knaves and Lo Moda?
Avatar 12:57pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Hello Lizners! Kinda grey out here in SoCal, but nothing to complain about.
Love that codey boombox @1ke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Liz Berg:

@Mariano, I don't think there's a Lo Moda connection, but Thee Knaves are from the DC area and related to the Agrarians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm mariano:

Ah, I see -- thanks!
Avatar 1:03pm fred:

@βrian: Unicode kicks ass, but Java's outdated "support" holds everyone back. CESU-8 isn't compliant, but they have to hold to their build-once crash-anywhere mantra
Avatar 1:12pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Jeez how did I almost miss an improptu unicode convention??
Avatar 1:14pm fred:

Kenzo, you are so missed (by me at least) When are you doing another last ever show?
Avatar 1:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yeah, I oughta add emoji support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Mister Dobalina:

Hey Liz, was nice meeting ya at the record fair. Regret not taking up the flask offer. Oh regrets. Awesome set so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm rbxbx:

@Kenzo: so long as you never add support for embedded gifs. Those are the death of every modern chat application ._.
Avatar 1:15pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Aww shucks, fred. There will be more shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm rbxbx:

@Kenzo, this is the best playlist/comments board i've ever used. Great job.
Avatar 1:20pm fred:

@Kenzo: I sure hope so! It's been a while. I'd love to hear you live again too, but that might not be doable (because I inconveniently live in France)

Avatar 1:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thanks, Michael 98145! I've been using chat systems for my whole life so I like what I like. I'm soon to do an overhaul that will make it a lot smoother. Which will probably have the downside of increasing the frequency of comments beyond the already sometimes unreadable rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Liz Berg:

Happy b-day Wild Neil! May your year sound great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Michael 98145:

@WildNeil, HBD!
Avatar 1:26pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Here's a general topic to throw out there. I am in the market for over the ear headphones, but do not want to spend more than, say, $200 on them. What do all you Lizners prefer/recommend?
Avatar 1:26pm fred:

Michael 98145 is right. This site should be taught in design schools, seriously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Cliff:

ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ, you can't go wrong with Sennheiser IMO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Cliff:

Sony MDR-7506 is also good
  1:30pm wild neil:

sony mdr xd100 ..."speakers" are tilted to point directly at my earholes. pretty good only fifteen from newegg but now they are nos for fifty or more....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Liz Berg:

@ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ: we use Sony MDR-7506 headphones at WFMU and they sound great. Not really styleee like some of the newer models out there, but solid.
Avatar 1:32pm βrian:

I like my Sony MDR-7506 cans just fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm common:

what have i missed? hello liz and people!
Avatar 1:36pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Thanks guys! I went to Frys to try out all those shmancy headphones and only 2 or 3 on display actually worked. Of course you're forced to listen to the most God awful music so it makes it hard to tell if they are good or not. I think I tried the Sennheisers, one model of Sony and Beats by Dr. Dre. All sounded pretty good, but again, standing in Frys listening to crappy pop songs is not the best place to figure it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm mariano:

@Kenzo: I second that, the accuplaylist is a joy.
Avatar 1:38pm InBrkly:

I used to be a big fan of the lower end Grado's but I kept breaking the cord by rolling my office chair over them. I got tired of paying so much for headphones and now I just use the cheapest sennheiser over-ear headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Cliff:

Personally I'd avoid Beats or Bose, unless you like LOTS of bass (but you could always get a headphone amp and mess with eqlzer settings), even so they're pretty overpriced
Avatar 1:39pm Chris M.:

@ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ: beats are actually bad headphones. the sony ones previously mentioned are good. i also like and currently use audio-technica ath-m30
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Michael 98145:

Besides the Beats just look goofy, IMHO, of course
Avatar 1:40pm βrian:

It would be nice to have the playlist read most-to-least recent, so one doesn't have to leap to the bottom to find the last three songs, say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm rbxbx:

@ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ the Sony MDR7506 are classics and can be had for under $100 these days. Pretty light weight and useable enough for monitoring/tracking and daily usage. Cord is a bit long if it gets stretched out though.
Avatar 1:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Brian, what if it stayed at bottom and the last entry were highlighted?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm rbxbx:

oh @βrian already said that. Well, another vote from here.
Avatar 1:46pm fred:

I'm half deaf, but I've been consistently told Beats are crap. I only heard praise for the Sony MDR7506 though you should take it with some salt (I'm basically deaf, remember)
Avatar 1:46pm βrian:

Oh, didn't see. Amen re agitated gifs. Very evil. Javascript-independent basic functionality is also fundamental.
Avatar 1:47pm InBrkly:

maybe just add a bit of js like window.scrollTo(0,document.body.scrollHeight);

I dunno it - is a small thing.

There are probably more important changes to be made.
  1:48pm wild neil:

read the amazon reviews for the sony mdrs this is a modern classic for eighty bucks...i doubt you'll find better.
Avatar 1:48pm βrian:

That would only work if the page loaded to the bottom. It's good to see things in context rather than broken apart. ("In my view," as says Bernie.)
Avatar 1:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@InBrkly: The comments window already does a much nicer and sophisticated form of that.
@Brian: What if the new bottom scrolled more into view like the comments do now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Michael 98145:

Great music today, DJ Liz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Cliff:

Yeah, I think the sweet spot for headphone prices is $80-120 or so, anything much beyond that and you start going into kooky audiophile territory :)
Avatar 1:56pm Chris M.:

gr8 set LB

  1:57pm The Hip Replacement:

Recently bought Sony MDR-7506 for all the reasons suggested above. A friend had recently done all the research. Have had them for a few months. Completely satisfied.
Avatar 1:58pm fred:

@Kenzo: that sometimes works, I've been puzzled about the inconsistency. Do these questions mean you're back on the site front?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Cliff:

I tried to get some turntable recommendations once, I was looking at some Audio-Technica models for under $200, and some audiophiles popped up and were like, cluck cluck, you must spend at least $500 for a very basic model that you have to calibrate yourself. Pffffftttt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Mike East:

I asked my wife very specifically for a pair of mdr7506's for xmas a few years ago and she got me a significantly more expensive pair of Bose headphones...they are quite nice, and sound great, but I know how much money we can afford, and would have preferred to still have that money.
  2:02pm wild neil:

there is an expensive 800 dollar classic technichs turntable thsts a classic...its direct drive though...
Avatar 2:02pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@Cliff - I concur! I could easily slip down the kooky audiophile slope. Case in point:
Avatar 2:02pm fred:

@Mike East: more like you know what the difference would mean whisky-wise
Swag For Life Member 2:03pm sibeliuss:

Avatar 2:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@fred, I'm curious what works inconsistently and on what browsers. You can email me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Michael 98145:

well-said, fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Mike East:

that's right, fred...speaking of which, I just finished a bottle last week...Time to do something about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm doctorjazz:

One of those kooky audiophiles here...I do like the Sennheiser Amperior, which is a bit more than the price originally mentioned (<$200), but I've seen them used or on clearance for less. I have them, really like them. The Beyerdynamic DT-1350 are in the $150 range and pretty nice as well, not as warm/fuzzy as the Senns, but more detailed. My $0.02...
  2:11pm dj:

I would love to hear WFMU interviewing Spanish bands like Nueva Volcano, Corizonas or Triangulo de Amor Bizarro at Primavera. There's so many good bands. Looking forward to hearing the simulcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Cliff:

I've got a well-worn Sennheiser HD555 which I did the "foam mod" with (meaning, I ripped out the pieces of foam inside blocking the air vents, heh) that I've been using for years now.
  2:15pm Ike:

Arrgh, I wish I could still wear my lovely antique Sony MDR-V6s, but I find over-the-ear phones very very uncomfortable w/glasses, and I can't wear contacts anymore. So I'm stuck w/earbuds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm doctorjazz:

You got me started...another nice on ear headphone, the Thinksound On1, wood body, pretty looking and warm sounding, <$200 (can be found for $100-150, list is closer to $200).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Michael 98145:

Wow, those Thinksounds are beautiful
Avatar 2:28pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@doctorjazz: OOoooo, those look cool. Do you own a pair? How is the sound?
Avatar 2:31pm fred:

@Mike East: I'm still undecided about that Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Looks mightily tempting, but I know it won't measure up to the unfiltered thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Alejandroool:

Hello all, I use a pair of the $100 Shure 440s and enjoy them for sound always, tho on occasion they can be a bit uncomfortable. I'm a big fan of the velvet-y covers some headphones have , for comfort... Catching the end of the show here, beautiful day in Toronto today for once. Had to get outside!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Alejandroool:

I'm a fan of Laphroaig as well, haven't had a bottle in awhile though. @fred which is the unfiltered?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm doctorjazz:

I really like the Thinksounds, have a pair, nice, warm, not as detailed as the DT-1350, but woodies have a nice organic kind of sound to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Alejandroool:

@Ike I wear glasses too, I think you should be able to find an over-ear that doesn't have too much pressure to relieve some of the glasses discomfort, or replace the pads if possible..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm doctorjazz:

(audiophilia is a hole one can fall into in a big, bad way...)
Avatar 2:38pm fred:

@Alejandroool: 10 year old straight from the cask. Only available from the distillery these days, but totally worth it if memory serves (I'd love to indulge but fares are just too high)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Cliff:

(digs around in desk for those Etymotics....where did they go?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm doctorjazz:

Have a pair of Etymotics as well, best noise isolating things I've ever heard, great for mowing lawn, blowing leaves, that sort of stuff (and they sound really nice as well).
  2:44pm βrian:

Actually, a rake is the best way of handling leaves. And then you can just listen to them.
  2:44pm Dave Z.:

Enough !!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Alejandroool:

I may have seen it in the LCBO's here fred, they usually have 2 diff types.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Cliff:

Found them! Always fun to plug the music DIRECTLY INTO MY BRAIN :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Alejandroool:

ya they carry the 10 yr old Islay Single Malt, usually $20 more than the Quarter Cask
Avatar 2:47pm fred:

This used to be my go-to drink, I didn't know how spoiled I was
  2:49pm wild neil:

enjoying your show in my sony mdrs on my phone liz berg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm mariano:

This Sand is nice, very hypnotic.
Avatar 2:50pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Thanks for all the tips Lizners! I forsee a pair of over the ear headphones in my future.
Great show as always Liz!!
Avatar 2:52pm fred:

@Alejandroool: The real stuff should be around 110 proof at least. Only the best casks can be bottled at this strength. This is important
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm mariano:

Actually, I use cheap Skull Candy earplugs at work, but one thing I'm not able to do is really blast music the way I like to with certain genres like metal. It's probably my phone, I used to have an iPod that was pretty loud. Anyone know good plugs for loudness?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm chris:

i use bose inears for active stuff and a pair of Klipsch over ears.... both load af
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Alejandroool:

gotcha fred, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm mariano:

Thanks @chris, I'll look into those. Should probably get a dedicated music player too because my LG phone just doesn't cut it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Michael 98145:

i could use some replacement parts
Avatar 2:55pm InBrkly:

I think at some point apple had to retool the loudness because of some regulatory violation. That may have only been EU though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm chris:

thanks for the robot dance party today, LizB! woot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Alejandroool:

@mariano I've never had strong output on a phone... I got a used ipod Classic which is great. My Shure 440's stream WFMU just fine out of my iphone 4 though, I can get decent output
  2:55pm josh:

Thanks Liz for the great show. Thanks Bergers for the HP recomendations. My MDR-7506s should be delivered in time for next week's show!
  2:56pm wild neil:

great show Liz over the top hyper cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Alejandroool:

thanks liz! great sounds this afternoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Music of the future will be sent directly to the auditory nerves, rendering speakers and headphones useless. Hopefully, mandatory advertising won't be part of the deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm mariano:

Interesting, @InBrkly. With my old iPod Touch I could blast the hell out of it, I miss that, bad as it is for you. Thanks too@Alejandroool -- maybe time to make the switch back to Apple. And of course thanks as always to you, Liz!
  2:57pm wild neil:
