Live performance and chat with Peter Sando of Gandalf
At the end of the Psychedelic Sixties, the band Gandalf recorded an album for Capitol Records, which was released after they broke up and became a rare collectable LP. Peter Sando wrote their song "Can You Travel in the Dark Alone," which became a favorite of WNEW-FM's Alison Steele, "The Nightbird." Flash forward to current times, and Sando is still writing dreamy songs as a solo artist. Peter's third album "Let There Be Love" was released at the end of 2015. Peter Sando visited Irene's show to play live and chat about his musical past.

Avatar 9:07pm Scraps deSelby:

Did you know there is a Chinese band (from Beijing) called Dear Eloise? (I didn't until two minutes ago.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Scraps! I didn't know that band either. Do they play all Hollies covers?
Avatar 9:14pm Scraps deSelby:

oh oh oh ah ah, song cycle..... [wallow]
Avatar 9:19pm Scraps deSelby:

I don't know! Wikipedia has a small entry. It's a DYI lo-fi band, apparently, which is.... I mean, DYI lo-fi band from Beijing?? Some Chinese things are much stranger than twenty years before...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the interface from Moody to Psychedelic is an interesting bridge to cross...& to just stand on & look into the swirling waters & which side you are on @ any point...& other things...
Avatar 9:21pm Scraps deSelby:

There is a Time Out Beijing??

Okay, I'll stop, but.... [shakes head]

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow 'Never Too Far'! Thx Mr. Sando !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm herb.nyc:

hi all. who is Peter Sando? what is a Gandalf? i'm liking, and learning. thanks.
  9:59pm jon:

your live performance sessions are awesome irene. much gratitude to you and peter sando for doing this for us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Irene Trudel:

Peter Sando was Gandalf's guitarist and wrote two of their most popular songs. Gandalf was a psychedelic pop band whose album came out after they broke up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks jon! I love presenting live music and having the performers talk about their work. There's nothing like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm coelacanth:

Hi Irene, Peter and all
  10:19pm Andrew:

The list of who has covered Nature Boy is amazing. I first heard the Grace Slick version with The Great Society. Had no idea about Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Massive Attack, Jon Hassell and others. Showing my ignorance of one of the jazz standards here.

Enjoying the guest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm herb.nyc:

i buy cd's as well. not vinyl, for i have no working turntable. i do not stream, or download. i expect i may be doing the latter two in the years(?) to come. (i'll even buy used cassettes, 50cents or less plz, and vhs)
Avatar 10:21pm geezerette:

Eden Ahbez who wrote 'Nature Boy' one of the true Proto-Hippies :
...'Captive's Choice' & its' delivery here making me think of Townes Van Zandt. Suiting my disposition perfectly tonight...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm coelacanth:

i have a 45 of George Benson doing "nature boy". (it's not on wikipedia's list) ...that and Nat King Cole's were the only versions i'd ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm coelacanth:

i buy music in all forms available, except mp3s. i do take those too though, if they're free.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Anymore - I only ever listen to streams (like this...mostly this) - & podcasts when I'm out & about w/ headphones...I'm quite poor & pay out the orifice to ComCast to bring everything to me...& they don't pay any song or artist royalties @ all - do they?...
  10:34pm subjecttoochange:

What was the name of that last song? It twas epic!
  10:36pm John P,:

"Can You Travel In The Dark Alone?" - a psychedelic masterpiece!
  10:38pm subjecttoochange:

Many thanks! One of the most ear grabbers that I've heard in a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

new software caused some setbacks? understandable, for we aren't a paperless society (remember that promise?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm coelacanth:

was "no earth can be won" a re-working of a gandalf song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm herb.nyc:

and the CHILLS be at monty hall. they are great. so great that i don't have a ticket. but i do for their sunday show at Littlefield. and chills are so great i don't have their latest record. oh don't listen to me.
Avatar 10:55pm Scraps deSelby:

I never heard of Rez Abbessi. Cool, neat.
  11:04pm herb.nyc:

"Chills tonight, hot tamale"
  11:05pm herb.nyc:

Thx Irene for playing Chills.
  11:06pm KP:

Is it really just just after 11?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sandy Denny. That is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm coelacanth:

this is "he moved through the fair".
  11:09pm miketp:

Sandy is grand.
  11:09pm KP:

Speaking of which, I just saw Erica Smith perform on Ave. A. It was a short, all original set and it was tremendous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm coelacanth:

ah! you fixed it. never mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Irene Trudel:

New Sand Denny Collection-- superb! Have to play a few cuts. Sorry for the typo. KP, thanks for the Erica update. I've kind of lost touch with what she's up to.
Avatar 11:14pm Scraps deSelby:

Fotheringay is one of the few songs where the title is the last words in the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm coelacanth:

this consecutive way is how this Sandy Denny should be listened to, for those who listen to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth:

Scraps, "tequilla" is another!
Avatar 11:17pm Scraps deSelby:

i.e., "Fotheringay" doesn't appear except in the last word in the song.
Avatar 11:18pm Scraps deSelby:

Tequila is repeated. :-)
  11:21pm KP:

She really has not been doing her own act at all so it was great to see. Response was fantastic. Until recently she lived near us so we ran into her a few times. That made it even better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm coelacanth:

- so she doesn't sing "fotheringay" but once in that? i guess i never heard all the lyrics.
  11:25pm Picker Guy:

Leo Kottke is also good on his own.
  11:31pm KP:

Rachel Ries is impressive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Irene Trudel:

Leo is fantastic. and really great storyteller as well. Rachel has such an expressive style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth:

i'm out. Thank you Irene Thank you Peter S
  11:37pm KP:

Definitely, re: Rachel
Avatar 11:42pm Scraps deSelby:

So love Skylarking. My favorite XTC. And I love this transition to 1000 Umbrellas, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Irene Trudel:

G'nite coelacanth! Scraps, there's new remastering our that sounds fantastic. Well worth getting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Clicky☆ this episode.
Avatar 11:46pm Scraps deSelby:

Really! Okay, then.
  11:47pm KP:

I saw XTC at CBGBs. I think that covers all the consonants, at least
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Listen to it - it continues the Beatle legacy better than ELO. (!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Santos L. Halper:

Great show Irene (even if i missed the Peter Sando [for now]). Thanks for the XTC, reminds me i need to finally listen to that corrected Skylarking sitting on the shelf...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Irene Trudel:

Saw XTC at the Capitol Theatre. Truly amazing, around the time of Black Sea.
  11:55pm JakeGould:

Lovely show for me to me doing tediously boring things to.
  11:56pm KP:

XTC encored with Wire's Dot Dash. Place went berserk, even for CBGB
  11:56pm JakeGould:

That was a compliment, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks everybody! Catch you next week.
  12:00am KP:

Tnx, Irene
