Hi Fab, folk

But cochineal is a bug. It's the source of the playlist's background color.

Satanic Majesties Request was derided for being an obvious bit of Sgt Pepper band-waggoning, but I've always really liked it!
Avatar 3:38pm MenfussMike:

I love the stones, but don't dig on Satanic Majesties...she's a rainbow and 2000 light years are about all i can handle
Avatar 3:38pm Chud:

I'm with you, Fabio. 'The Citadel' is a great track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Michael 98145:

There was a fascinating exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe all about cochineal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Andrew Waterloo:

I found my own copy of Voodoo Party not too long ago. All i had to do was glue the cover.

Fans of Moroder and other synth legends should check out this short parody Adult swim just put out:
Avatar 3:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Still voodoo hunting, myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm mariano:

Parts of this sound like Sweet Child O' Mine!
Avatar 3:43pm βrian:

So, in addition to Cherry Garcia, cochineal has influenced art, culture and trade throughout the world. Who knew?
Avatar 3:45pm βrian:

@Michael: Thanks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Of course the Stones got infamously busted right then - which was quite an interruption.
I've always pointed to 'Satanic Majesties' as an example of this thing where the Critics decry an album - but everyone you know & talk to personally actually loves it!...& the Critics catch up later - after a generation, maybe...
There is Site trending where you pick your Top 20 albums & Share or paste them anywhere :
- & someone remarked how what everyone exalts as the best albums now - VU & Nico, Pet Sounds, Forever Changes - all were commercial flops - & it's only because the Critics have told them they're the best everyone says so now (they wouldn't have 30 years ago...) Thing is - I really do love all of those...& 'Satanic Majesties''...
  3:48pm Dean:

Did somebody just say, "Nurse Diesel..."?
Avatar 3:50pm βrian:

What a chipper fella!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I didn't know 'Odessey & Oracle' from anything just a few years ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm mariano:

@Dean: Nurse Diesel -- No fruit cup for you!
  3:51pm ScottC:

Hey! Is that Andy Serkis? Sounds like a character that you did for a Dickens thing
  3:53pm Dean:

Had to look that up, @mariano, because I've not seen High Anxiety. I was riffing off Young Frankenstein.
  3:53pm Dean:

No, wait. I was thinking of Frau Blucher! Same actor, diff film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I like to play a game: What would the world sound like if this Artist had not existed? Today's Artist: Zappa & the Mothers...
  3:54pm βrian:

Wait, did you just hear horses neighing?
  3:54pm Dean:

The lyrics to "Smoke on the Water" would have been different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm mariano:

@Dean: both were brilliant roles by Cloris Leachman, one of my all-time favorites. The bondage scene between her and Harvey Korman in High Anxiety is priceless. And the way she slurps her spoonful of fruit!
  3:56pm Dean:

"And the way she slurps her spoonful of fruit" scans like Pre-Raphaelite poetry. Real purty.
  3:58pm John M:

speaking of Cloris L, she is great in Last Picture Show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Young Frankenstein' is not only a perfect movie - but I was 12.
  4:02pm Dean:

I prefer Blazing Saddles, but who's counting?
Avatar 4:03pm Fabio:

@John M: Yes! Leachman is breathtaking in Last Picture show! She was just amazing in that role. Great movie too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm mariano:

@John M: a couple of months ago I took the Greyhound from Shreveport, La, to Dallas, going through towns like Longview and Kilgore -- very Texas -- immediately made me think of Last Picture Show.

@Dean -- Haha! Guess I'm a poet and didn't even know it!
Avatar 4:04pm βrian:

Indeed, and where would the Pre-Raphaelites have been without cochineal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mike East:

I think Diamanda Galas was just in here rehearsing.
Hey Fabio and everybody.
Avatar 4:06pm βrian:

+1 for Young Frankenstein. I still miss Inga.
  4:07pm Dean:

My 5YO daughter is "my little Diamanda Galas." She has given, uh, recitals three mornings in a row.
  4:08pm Breel:

@Mariano--one time a friend and I took a bus from Chicago to Biloxi Mississippi. A lot of people wondered why. It was fun and very interesting and very difficult at times.
Avatar 4:11pm Fredericks:

I am currently reading Colin Wilson's The Outsider. Quite good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm mariano:

Lieber is beloved. I think it's supposed to mean beloved honey.
Avatar 4:14pm βrian:

Similar to Liebfraumilch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm mariano:

I think that's what it is, I'm only conversant in German, not fluent! Liebfraumilch is virgin's milk, that much I know for certain. @Breel: yeah, I had a real Greyhound adventure around Mardi Gras. I'm from New Orleans, and my mom's in Shreveport, and I took the bus from NOLA to S'port as well, before going to Dallas to catch my flight back to NYC. The AC broke down, so we had to ride with the roof hatches open. Some serious country stuff, told my friends it was like a Tom Waits album on wheels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm mariano:

Sorry, it means "I prefer honey." Lieber also means "rather."
  4:18pm nic:

love eva hesse
  4:19pm Lou:

are you going to play huey lewis in honor of american psycho?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm alan from sacto:

I always think of Genesis when I recall american psycho. And wasn't The Cure in there somewhere too?
  4:29pm Breel:

@Mariano--sounds great--mini adventures on wheels :>}
Avatar 4:29pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

oo yay this.
  4:31pm Breel:

On my trip, we pulled up at an intersection in the middle of Mississippi, country, and a bunch of men got in holding only one manila envelope each. They had just been let out of prison! Then we met a really funny guy who was having a long-term feud with the chief of police in Biloxi. It involved weed, and this guy would not back down.

Avatar 4:49pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm mariano:

@Breel: That's a trip (no pun intended)! On my rides there was one guy who had a seizure during boarding in S'port, then a guy or two they wouldn't let on in Lafayette because they were drunk (or smelled like beer, according to the driver -- but it's Louisiana, I thought. Everybody's drunk most of the time). Not quite as eventful as your trip though, no recent prison graduates that I know of.
  4:50pm Mark R:

Really digging this Fripp & Eno right now. It's like a meal you didn't know you were going to enjoy so much...it's really hitting the spot.

Karl Marx Day! - now that's a ♉Taurus, Have or Have Notters...
Speaking of being 12 & Dada Centennial - I wonder if this old series 'Shock of the New' would give me an iota of the buzz it did when I were but a wee callow 20thCentury person...
  5:11pm Dean:

Fans of Marx, don't miss this workshop with Robert Paul Wolff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y_wz85ViLY
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I seem to recall Dada & Cabaret Voltaire being presented notably in it somewhere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Michael 98145:

@RR, oh Robert Hughes. I'd forgotten all about that series. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Back then - it was a buzz to just become informed that the CounterCulture had the whole 20th Century of Modernism stretching behind it.

...since postulated that Rawk Movements are just African-American R&B + some European Art Movement:
Psych = R&B + Surrealism
Mods = R&B + Pop Art / Abstract Futurism
Punk = R&B + dAdA...

I saw Horse Lords play live last night and I was looking around at stuff about them and i came across their twitter and there was this link they tweeted that I thought might be of interest to some around these parts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I mean Mod = Constructivism, really...
Often noted how Punk often just accepted Women in its' aspirational Anarchism. How great was that? What the hell went wrong ?! Whereas DAda & Surrealism still struggled w/ Goddess/Whore/Object dichotomies...Many Lady Artists there of course. Frida Kahlo kind of trumps them all - like both Authentic Folk & Surrealist all @ once...just blue skying here, sorry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Dave in Vermont:

speaking of that Rev Rab i heard Exene Cervenka , John Doe, and Dave Alivn talking about the LA punk scene and she was referring to that same idea of Punk allowing whatever for a period before it took itself too seriously
