Avatar 12:41pm Cheri Pi:

You are so lucky that he actually cared about what your were listening too, my Dad is so one-sided that if it's not classical, it basically doesn't exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm chris:

Irwin's been playing some more hard bop lately, and its been great. yay for jazz! without which, rock may be a bit bland...
Avatar 12:43pm jljl:

Condolences and good work on keeping it together. I remember I played that hit by The Killers in honor of my mother cuz she loved that song and lost it OTA. As I did w/ Bowie 4 months ago.
Avatar 12:46pm V Priceless:

of course!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My theory is that Trump is going to be President next year and the good people on this planet are bailing out before the trouble starts. We the unfortunate are just going to try to endure the situation.

I have so many memories of your Dad. I remember when he was working in the city and he came home with a copy of Wire's Pink Flag for you. Coolest Dad ever! --
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm timurf:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm ChrisVB:

Regards to the loss of your father Diane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm coelacanth:

Benny Goodman was my first jazz interest. he also was a truly Great, daring and fair human being - basically saying Fuck you to all the assholes that said he couldn't have a "mixed" band.
Avatar 1:10pm herb.nyc:

so sorry to hear the news, Diane. may he r.i.p.

at the thrift shop yest, i saw Jo Jackson's "jumpin jive". did your dad listen to this?
Avatar 1:11pm Cheri Pi:

I'm lucky enough to have an all swing station here in Cincy, it's all I listen to at home and in the car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm coelacanth:

...'spent many cutting school days at my father's house, smoking herb and listening to Benny Goodman.
Avatar 1:12pm Diane Kamikaze:

@Herb, yes he did, he was always happy that someone would revisit what he thought was the best style of music ever
  1:12pm Dean:

Wonderful tribute to your father, Diane.

I still have the clarinet my dad (and later I) took up and shortly put down. He credited Goodman.
  1:13pm John McGreivey:

Very cool.

My dad also died recently. he was a huge fan of jazz (mostly pre-1960), and a drummer also.
  1:15pm Laura Z:

Ted is tuning in right now!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth:

jumpin' jive has a lot of Louis Jordan on it, no? (one of my most favorites)
Avatar 1:17pm herb.nyc:

great, on the Jumpin Jive, Diane. now plz, this is a JOKE, via the Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players. their shtick is to play songs in diff styles, and at a show once, singer Jason intros: "this song is done in a jazz vein. are there any jazz fans here?". and a very very moderate applause. Jason: "yeah, i can take it or leave it myself". i laughed.
  1:18pm SeanG:

buddy fuckin rich!
Avatar 1:18pm Diane Kamikaze:

He was psyched that in 3rd grade I picked up clarinet. I learned though, that it was frowned on to play it aimed skyward, like many of his favorites. That was not OK in grade school, but I tried!
Avatar 1:18pm V Priceless:

my god, this....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm DreamCricket:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'm trying to imagine in my head what this Buddy Rich solo looks like as he's doing it. Well, a blur, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm coelacanth:

yeah this guy had it
  1:23pm Dean:

For better or worse, I associate Buddy Rich with the afternoon talk show circuit c. 1970. Always stunning. Later I'd see his records on, e.g., Pablo, and I'd experience a bit of cognitive dissonance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coelacanth:

Ken, just like this : i48.photobucket.com...
Avatar 1:24pm Luna:

I played the clarinet for a few years, mid-high school. I can't play one to save my life now though.
Avatar 1:24pm glenn:

my condolences. now i know why i thought i was listening to the drummer stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth:

...and here's Bill Ward : media.giphy.com...
Avatar 1:25pm V Priceless:

my god, this too....Joe Morello: more proof that 'musical drummer' is NOT an oxymoron!
  1:25pm Dean:

Transitioned (sorry, ugly verb) from clarinet to tenor sax, thence to bass clarinet, which was bigger than me.
Avatar 1:28pm glenn:

apropos of nothing, thursday is gnocchi day in italy.
  1:28pm Dean:

Apropos of gnothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth:

i was looking for the gif that is floating around the wfmu site of Buddy Rich on drums. i favorited it but i cannot visit my own favorites page on this computer because it freezes. i don't remember which show it's from originally.
Avatar 1:29pm V Priceless:

gnice one, Dean
Avatar 1:33pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Avatar 2:08pm TehBadDr:

Diane, my condolences. When my father passed I was there with him and we had Stan Getz Compact Jazz playing. He was a musician and Jazz hound, so we played jazz sets at his wake and funeral as well. Sorry for your loss.
