Options Brian Turner: Playlist from May 3, 2016 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Avatar 3:09pm Brian Turner:

Greenlight, I was just asked by 'em while they tapes were being dug up and put out. The cover was also shot in Centralia PA not too far from where I grew up and Made In USA flick they score took place so was cool to see that....
Swag For Life Member 3:10pm BarbR:

For me, these are great post-Levitation Austin jams! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm tomasz.:

as a heartburn sufferer, i feel a great kinship with Centralia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm tomasz.:

@wild neil i don't think you can sign in using the app.
Avatar 3:12pm TDK60:

I heard the Faust live at Monty Hall gig via this show. Wow, really fine psych rock with audience participation. Haven't had time to see the vid yet.
Avatar 3:14pm Brian Turner:

Thanks TDK our engineers went above and beyond on that zoner
Avatar 3:17pm greenlight:

Brian that is so amazing. I never knew the story behind that pic, now it all makes sense. Also Thurston and Lee @wfmurecordfair stream. great stuff. had to be a good wknd. good evening.
Avatar 3:18pm Brian Turner:

yeh the whole town smoldered thru the 80s, and then they moved everyone out. Dunno how safe it was sitting there for that cover pic haha. They were passing thru there between Pottsville PA gig and NYC with fIREHOSE in 86
Avatar 3:18pm Lopez:

that pic made me nervous. Lots of carcinogens were breathed that day!
Avatar 3:19pm Brian Turner:

hope not
Avatar 3:19pm Lopez:

You should interview the kid who fell into the sinkhole on his grandparents lawn. He's gotta be 50 now
  3:19pm Polyus:

This MacArthur song shouldn't work at all, but somehow it does.
  3:22pm wild neil:

mac arthur reminds me of Styx in a good way...wait...yummy yummy yummy? this show is seriously demented. Bravo!
Avatar 3:23pm greenlight:

late 80, Pennsylvania, coal mining town, can not imagine. cool pic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In case anyone is collecting votes on Flea's anthem for BT's weekly opening number, count my vote as a solid "Yes."
Avatar 3:26pm Lopez:

Avatar 3:26pm TDK60:

I vote "nah". I like Flea and all; it's the tune I abhor.

greetings Brian and sundry hooligans
...it only took me 15-20 minutes to prevail (temporarily) over my computer's shenanigans.

...Fast Forward made that song tolerable, even good!
Avatar 4:00pm statoj:

I love this Yoko song too.
Avatar 4:02pm Eye_Eye:

@coelacanth agreed.
Avatar 4:03pm geezerette:

Comforting to discover she can actually sing.
Avatar 4:05pm geezerette:

@Cliff: Did you watch any Casavettes films?
Avatar 4:06pm Cliff:

No geezerette, why do you ask?
Avatar 4:09pm geezerette:

Thought you might've,wondering what you thought if so.
Vague memory of old thread.
Avatar 4:10pm Nucosme:

Hello hello
Avatar 4:11pm Cliff:

I know of him but haven't gotten around to watching anything by him yet (I'm not much of a film buff anyway :)
Avatar 4:13pm geezerette:

Oh well then! No reason to watch! Film is a last century medium anyway.
Avatar 4:17pm Cliff:

A lot more interesting than most of this century's media though....
Avatar 4:19pm Eye_Eye:

who's the guy in the background? reminds me a lot like alan vega/suicide ♥ :) does anyone know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm common:

b.t. all
Avatar 4:23pm TDK60:

Film so quaint. Radio so old. Yet I still listen to WFMU via the air 60% of time; by computer 40%.
Avatar 4:24pm geezerette:

Well,I like lots of mediums & processes and my hierarchies change. I like visual lanuages and film is a great one,fun to go back to earliest & watch the vocabulary being built.
Avatar 4:25pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 4:26pm TDK60:

This Wire outfit has potential.
Avatar 4:27pm Lopez:

Great Wire track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Carmichael:

Just back from meetings and off to more. Dammit, and Wire is on! Don't play anything good for a while, n'kay Brian??
Avatar 4:29pm geezerette:

yeah this is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm coelacanth:

Hey! that's not fair! Brian, don't listen to him!
Avatar 4:33pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm common:

oh man! greeeeeaaat cover! great video of this too
Avatar 4:52pm Cheri Pi:

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, whaa???
Avatar 4:53pm Cliff:

Robert Palmer! Duuuuude!

geezerette: Virtual reality is making a comeback nowadays, if you're interested in seeing a new visual vocabulary being built....lots of challenges to overcome still in that medium
Avatar 4:54pm Cheri Pi:

My mom is a yuge Robert Palmer fan.
Avatar 4:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Electric guitar is mid-20th Century stuff. Tubes? Nothing else like it...Completely unnecessary now - in a way...
Avatar 4:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I mean - everything's unnecessary now...just have digital simulations - & machines to experience them...
Avatar 4:59pm Cliff:

Computers haven't become sentient yet... (and maybe never will, though don't try to tell an AI researcher that!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm coelacanth:

but digital simulation of tubes does not sound like tubes. it's an unreasonable facsimile.
(i guess folks who didn't grow up with a beautiful fisher amp might not know that though.)
Avatar 5:06pm Cliff:

Hey Brian, I looked up Kimamanahibi on discogs, if you give me the track # I can try to translate the title for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm coelacanth:

this guy's singing is much easier to take than Morressy's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Michael 98145:

it would appear meat is murder
Avatar 5:07pm Cliff:

That's Morrissey, you heathen! :P
Avatar 5:08pm Brian Turner:

sure Cliff, we have Mayuko on staff that I will prolly get on the case :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm tomasz.:

NWC that talks back
Avatar 5:10pm Cliff:

Ok, no problem then :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm coelacanth:

Yikes! no offense. he is or was a Great lyricist; and the smiths' instrumentalists were impeccable...i just wish they had a good vocalist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm coelacanth:

(i've got no glasses on and my hands are behind my back, if anyone wants to hit me in the face.)
Avatar 5:14pm Cliff:

Nah, just messin' with you coelacanth...just found it funny to see someone rank Cookie Monster vocals over him, heh
Avatar 5:15pm Cliff:

While misspelling his name besides
Avatar 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...well - he has a distinctive voice (he sounds like him) - which is half the battle in Pop/Rawk - & he's basically intelligible (I can tell the words - which helps in this case w/ the good writing, but isn't even a prime virtue in singing necessarily)...he communicates inflections (irony, what have you) - even as his style tends to a kind of spoken monotone, itself a certain effect...'cetera...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm coelacanth:

hey, i was pretty happy with myself for remembering the double double in his name!
Avatar 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - I thot you were talking about MES...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm coelacanth:

anyway, Cliff, i half-jest as well. i don't like Morrissey's singing, but i've heard much better cookie monsters too.
Avatar 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(?)...but much the same evaluations...
  5:21pm Jeremy:

Yeah U 47! Feeling voxish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Michael 98145:

for those doggie avatars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm tomasz.:

hell yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm coelacanth:

hahaha! i've never heard this one!
Avatar 5:23pm Cliff:

Well you are a prehistoric fish, so I'll give you credit for managing to spell anything at all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm coelacanth:

(that one)
  5:23pm B Z:

Avatar 5:24pm Cheri Pi:

Edith Megadeth is LOSING her shit!!!
Avatar 5:24pm Cheyenne:

I like Jingle Cats better but this is purty good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm coelacanth:

well, shit, Cliff - and typing on a keyboard!
  5:24pm rw:

I really need to teach my dog to sing.
Avatar 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...a surprisingly pleasant range, if not perfect intonation...a primal instinctualism is manifest in the vocalizations...fine Art...yessir...
Avatar 5:24pm Lopez:

God Bless the Singing Dogs
Avatar 5:25pm Cliff:

I assume you evolved some sort of rudimentary appendages for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm coelacanth:

Rabbit, those particular dogs were culled from the mormon tabernacle choir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Michael 98145:

"If I paint like a barbarian, it's because we live in a barbarous age" - Karel Appel
  5:35pm ?:

Brian, can you play some fIREHOSE from Ragin' Full On?
Avatar 5:35pm singing serpent glen:

If I sing like a dog...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm coelacanth:

Cliff, no. why do you think my replies usually come about 20 minutes after the conversation ended?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm coelacanth:

Michael, i can use that.
Avatar 5:39pm geezerette:

Hey there,that was unintentionally funny!
Kurt Schwitters though, now THERE was a vocalist!

Aware of strides in AI and Virtual Reality but haven't tried new devices yet. I'm more concerned about losing huge chunks of actual reality! Not a fan of algorithmic delivery systems either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm coelacanth:

those dogs probably didn't receive a scent.
Avatar 5:53pm Cliff:

I've been experimenting with a couple VR systems for a while now, the technology is quite impressive but nobody seems to have a good idea what to do with it yet (myself included :)
Avatar 5:57pm Cliff:

Is this supposed to sound like untuned radio static, or is there a problem with the stream? Just wondering....

(And thanks for the show today Brian!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Michael 98145:

Woof (Moo)
Avatar 5:58pm Cliff:

Haha, never mind, I can hear Brian talking just fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm coelacanth:

Thanks Brian!
later on people
