Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Approx. start time

Another year has passed since the untimely demise of Richie Shulberg in 2009. Time to pay homage to the fiddle wizard's alter ego, Citizen Kafka. We celebrate his memory in song and tasteless humor culled from The Citizen Kafka Show on WBAI many an age ago. As always, Irene is joined by celebrants / co-conspirators Edward Haber and Kenny Kosek.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm melinda:

Good evening Irene & listeners!
  9:06pm Listener Robert:

You managed to get a selection that honored the memory of not only Citizen Kafka, but that guy who composed the Mr. Softee jingle.
  9:06pm Listener Robert:

I didn't see you'd already noted that in the playlist, sorry for the redundancy. Sorry for the redundancy.
  9:07pm kevlicki:

Enjoyable medley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Irene Trudel:

I updated it to be redundant, Robert. And Hi Melinda and kevlicki!
  9:08pm WebHamster:

Merry Shulcoth!
  9:17pm WebHamster:

Yes, Ed, it is pronounced Waasss. I used to have a 5" demo reel of commercials from Waas Block Productions!
  9:18pm Listener Robert:

I forgot who here 1st played "Songs for Ice Cream Trucks" by Drink Me, but I came in in the middle of it and, WFMU's signal fading a little, I assumed from what I heard that the Mr. Softee jingle was derived from an old folk tune called "Drink Me". I even told my friend Nadine that.
  9:20pm Tim:

My favorite Mr. Softee ripoff was the Philadelphia-based Mustafa Softee. Sadly, its jingle was not the call to prayer.
  9:21pm Listener Robert:

I'm easily mis-convinced of reverse sequences of events like that. Steve Post played some recorded harpsichord compositions claiming them to have been baroque predecessors of later tunes, but admitted the joke after he'd played their cover of "Erie Canal". He could've fooled me, though.
  9:23pm Kate Borger:

So happy to celebrate Shulcoth with you here in Pittsburgh, PA (where Jeff Berman now resides). Will you have a chance to play "Nothing"? It's so incredibly smart and funny! I remember sitting on the floor of the NInth Avenue WBAI studio during the Kafka show. Thanks for that wonderful opportunity and memory! (And early Happy Birthday to Ed.)
  9:23pm WebHamster:

Free music store '80s version was at PS 41 - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10209082555086804
  9:24pm Listener Robert:

Then there was the time I played some Croatian records for friends, and they informed me one cut was "Buffalo Gals". Like when Jackie Gleason didn't know "Swanee R." on "The Honeymooners".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Irene Trudel:

Glad you're able to listen in, Kate! Unless Ed has a version of Nothing without frank language we won't be able to play it.
  9:26pm Marty Cutler:

Hi, Y'alls! I remember the 69 Bar gig very well.Chaos it was in Shulkie's capable (or culpable) hands. The PA system was a nest of wires surrounding all of the players, after Shulkie got there late and hastily assembled a lovecraftian rat's nest of cable. I don't recall if it was the same gig at 69, but I recall Haber bringing in a rack of digital recorders, which were somehow threatened by a minor flood of water from spilled water bottles.

Ia! Ia Shulkie!
  9:27pm Listener Robert:

Now I feel deprived, because I never heard a dirty version of "Nothing".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Irene Trudel:

Well, Ed says none of WWST's versions of "Nothing" were explicit, so here you go.
  9:30pm Kate Borger:

Thank you!!
  9:30pm JakeGould:

Ahh… “Nothing∏” such a perfect Yiddish song.
  9:31pm kbudjones:

I tuned in just in time. Nothing!
  9:32pm WebHamster Henry:

Kafka used to have a disheveled pile of scribbled lyrics for Nothing if he felt like doing an extra long version.
  9:32pm JakeGould:

And “Nothing” is based on the Yiddish song/joke with the same tune called “Potatoes” and a Google search brings me back to… Last years playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- so The Fugs were just one in a tradition. I learn something. About Nothing.
  9:34pm JakeGould:

@RevRabbitNov63: More details here. teruah-jewishmusic.blogspot.com...
  9:35pm Marty Cutler:

It's got Nothing to do with it.
Avatar 9:38pm Scraps deSelby:

Finally I got my (your) playlist running. Awesome show!
  9:41pm WebHamster Henry:

Ed was always there recording everything ! Thanks so much Ed, without tape who would believe it?
  9:43pm Marty Cutler:

Long before I was in Wretched Refuse, I was playing pedal steel and guitar with a guy named Bob Gaster, who lived in a church in Brooklyn. I left the pedal steel at his place, since I didn't have a car, and the steel is a shlep and a half. I came to a rehearsal one day, only to find the pedal steel in some tuning that was not of this earth.

Bob Gaster explained it: "I was jamming with a guy named Richie Shulberg, and he played steel; do you know Richie?"
Avatar 9:44pm Scraps deSelby:

Sad about Mr Softee jingle writer dying. My ex Ellie knew the words and would sing it with little provocation.
  9:52pm Marty Cutler:

I believe that "Marching Down Broadway" was an Alan Kaufman tune. I was the banjo guy on the cut you played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Marty! Call back. I picked up the wrong handset.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm herb.nyc:

hi all, i don't know CITIZEN KAFKA at all. thanks for learning me. but i did hear song "nothing" eons ago, maybe at folk city. who did it??? (ASIDE: is Edward Haber related to Lillian Haber, my french teacher at cunningham jhs, circa 1973?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Herb! Ed says there's no relation. And I think you're remembering The Fugs version of Nothing.
  9:58pm JakeGould:

@herb.nyc: Scroll up to see the link I posted for details.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm herb.nyc:

thanks, Irene & Ed & Jake. (and that mrs. haber: awful teacher, yuck!!! oh i joke, she was nice, despite being 'old school'. my next teacher was ms. chasen. va va va voom!)
  10:01pm Marty Cutler:

Are you related to Melanie Haber? How about Betty Jo Bialoski?
  10:02pm JakeGould:

@herb.nyc: You went to Cunningham JHS in Brooklyn? I went to Reynolds JHS when it still existed… We should be mortal JHS enemies or some shit like that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Irene Trudel:

Audrey Farber???
  10:06pm JakeGould:

@herb.nyc: Done!
Avatar 10:07pm Scraps deSelby:

Irene: exactly.
  10:17pm Marty Cutler:

Damn—I forgot about Audrey Farber!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Webhamster Henry:

Maybe Marty can Skype in if he's having phone bandwidth trouble?
I was commenting from the bus before, now I'm back home and will be even more obnoxious.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Webhamster Henry:

P.S. You also left out Susan Underhill.
Avatar 10:21pm Scraps deSelby:

Susan.... Underhill?
  10:22pm Carmichael:

Dang, this is legendary. I'm mad I was out mowing the lawn.
  10:22pm Marty Cutler:

I'll call in later from another phone.

Drat the name came back to me like a hot kiss at the end of a wet fist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, Nicky...
Avatar 10:25pm Scraps deSelby:

It's all right. After all, everyone knew her as Nancy.

Yuck!

Enjoy a slice of Dr. Otto's rat's milk cheesecake today!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Webhamster Henry:

If you do a Wretched show at Monty Hall, you could rename it the Clutch Cargo Space for the evening.
  10:38pm Marty Cutler:

Mr. Webhamster: only if Paco and Velda are in attendance.
  10:39pm Marty Cutler:

Tip O'Neill: Duck Chow Fun and a Ring-Ding...
  10:39pm herb.nyc:

Really, WHO farted on-air?
  10:40pm Marty Cutler:

Kenny, do you recall the origin of Doremus?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Oh yeah, the pledge of Allegiance backward, I remember this.
Avatar 10:46pm manchester lad:

wow this is brilliant, and terrifying. and contains the word flatus.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Webhamster Henry:

The Mighty Sparrow's "Wanted Dead or Alive", played in the background there, was played on nearly every WBAI show at the time.
  11:04pm Carmichael:

Wow, i've died and gone to limbo.
Avatar 11:06pm manchester lad:

alright is it just me, or does this one guy really sound like a young john goodman? im not finding any info about this thing on my first basic attempt at query, but it feels like it could be old enough.
  11:06pm Marty Cutler:

Mousseau...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Irene Trudel:

You nailed it, manchester lad!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Webhamster Henry:

Yes it is John Goodman, before Roseanne.
  11:07pm Marty Cutler:

Get me a young John Goodman...
  11:07pm John McGreivey:

I was listening to the shoe on the Android app, and then I went into an elevator and lost it.
Avatar 11:08pm manchester lad:

firreals? yes! ima perceptor of audio.
  11:09pm John McGreivey:

*Show

But then again, maybe it was a shoe. I forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Irene Trudel:

A really big shoe?
  11:10pm John McGreivey:

Zactly.
  11:12pm Carmichael:

Missed it by that much.
Avatar 11:16pm manchester lad:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Irene Trudel:

Would you believe...?
  11:23pm Carmichael:

Being Irish, this reminds me of the Raggle Taggle Gypsy-O.
  11:28pm Carmichael:

That, not this.
  11:30pm Marty Cutler:

Jalopy?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Webhamster Henry:

Do you have "Choking Victim Man?"
Avatar 11:32pm Van in DC:

oh man I'm late. Hi Irene, I think I have to do a drive by hi and bye...I'll catch up...
  11:32pm Marty Cutler:

Henry: Wasn't that one by "Four or Five Crazy Guys"?
  11:36pm Marty Cutler:

Ed Haber and Kenny Kosek: collectively, the Phil Schaap of Wretched Refuse.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Webhamster Henry:

It think it was Kafka at the Eagle Tavern, reading the "Choking Victim Heimlich Maneuver" poster to the tune of Secret Agent Man.
I have to say, it was sometimes hard to convince him to leave the stage.
Sadly, the number of Crazy Guys is somewhat diminished these days.
  11:43pm Carmichael:

Who is the deep voice DJ here? You sound quite familiar, sir ...
  11:44pm Carmichael:

Jeez, why don't you put it on a bbs?
  11:44pm Marc15:

MySpace still exists ?
  11:45pm Marty Cutler:

Yay! Paco and Velda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Irene Trudel:

That is Kenny Kosek, with those dulcet tones.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Any Chef Of The Pasture gigs coming up?
  11:47pm Marty Cutler:

Zilch. I just got an email from Saratoga. Have you done the first night over the last few years?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Die Bayrische Polka, I could have told you that!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Webhamster Henry:

Saratoga wanted more local acts than ours, sadly. We should bully them into it, because First Night Saratoga is great fun!
  11:52pm Marty Cutler:

And the sound was great.
  11:53pm Marty Cutler:

The Citizen loved Gary Null and Gary Void.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks so much for the Deep Cuts of Shulcoth!
There are actually two Thumbelinas on that record (or at least on the tape).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for celebrating Shulcoth with us, everybody!
