Good Morning World...!
Avatar 9:07am fred:

Good morning Marty and listeners. I saw Kuniko Kato play a couple of Reich pieces on marimba two days ago
Avatar 9:08am Wild Neil:

@Marty et al...PEACE. This Steve Reich is pretty...Avante Garde to be sure...
Avatar 9:17am Cheri Pi:

I approve

love that philly soul
  9:41am judy from croton:

this song inspires the most extreme interpretations. absolutely amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Scraps deSelby:

Bleah. I fell down catastrophically a half hour ago, on my hip. (I'm paralyzed on my right side, so if I start falling, I usually keep falling, with a "shit, I'm falling, can't do anything about it" feeling.) Now I'm lying down for a few hours, wondering if I should go to the hospital. Not a good feeling....
Avatar 9:43am Sem Chumbo:

Thx for this memory, Marty. Wonderful voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Scraps deSelby:

rip Billy Paul
Avatar 9:48am Wild Neil:

@Scraps-I think it would be prudent to seek medical attention sooner than later. Call 911 if you have to. Take care of you!
Avatar 9:49am bobdoesthings:

Avatar 9:51am Cheri Pi:

Agreed @Wild Neil, the music can only take you so far @Scraps, let the ambulance take you the rest of the way. I hope you're ok
Avatar 9:52am Wild Neil:

@Scraps-yeah, do not wait. You can listen to WFMU on your smartphone if you have one while you wait in the ER....
Avatar 9:52am Wild Neil:

Or urgent care which is often more expensive but orders of magnitude faster.
Avatar 9:56am Marcel M:

Zer ferk I was just on here last night seeking medical help. We're fallin' apart here!
Avatar 9:56am Wild Neil:

@Marty-can you chime in on this Scraps situation? Scraps is hurt, fell down hard...might have a fractured hip?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am tomasz.:

yeah, best to be on the safe side, Scraps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am tomasz.:

speaking of medical emergencies, how's yr hand Marcel?
Avatar 9:58am Marcel M:

Its good, thanks for checking in Tomasz. I got 5 stitches. Just gotta try to use it lightly for a week or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am tomasz.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Greg from ZONE 5:

Wha happen, Marcel? Please tell me it was from shredding your axe too hard…
Avatar 10:03am Marcel M:

@Tomasz: Yeah I think I made the right call... Wouldn't have closed on its own.

@Greg: I wish!!!! Dish washing instrument!!! And now I can't shred for a week..
Avatar 10:04am Marcel M:

Wow Freudian slip.. you can tell I really want to play my instrument.. haha. Thats INCIDENT*
Avatar 10:04am bobdoesthings:

I just google image searched "shredding an axe" hoping to find a gif of someone throwing an axe into a woodchipper/hydraulic press or something... nothing but guitars! psshhffftthhh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am melinda:

Glad you got your hand fixed, Marcel. And hi Marty, really enjoying the sounds this morning!

Avatar 10:05am Wild Neil:

@Scraps-are you going?
Avatar 10:06am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - not quite what I wanted.... but thank you, it'll do.
Avatar 10:11am Marcel M:

@Bob: Yr girl Selda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am tomasz.:

wahhh this is great
Avatar 10:14am Marcel M:

Its incredible hard to grind or break up weed with this damned thumb.
Avatar 10:15am Marcel M:

Actually nm I discovered a good method ;-)
Avatar 10:16am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - indeed! <3 Selda!
Avatar 10:19am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - this injury of yours could be a golden opportunity to learn how to roll joints with one hand!
Avatar 10:23am Sem Chumbo:

My Sweet Lord, the experimental side of the quiet Beatle!
  10:24am P-90:

@Marcel: try using the bottom of a shot glass in a rocking/grinding motion to gently but firmly break up the buds, then use two fingers to remove the unwanted lumber, seeds (if any), etc.
Avatar 10:25am Marcel M:

@Bob: Hmm... maybe you solved my new hobby conundrum since I can't play guitar.

@P-90: That is ingenious! But I found a way to hold the grinder where it worked. Cheating, I know.
  10:26am Mark R:

Very interesting to hear this George Harrison album. I knew OF it for years, but I'd never actually heard it until today. Thanks for playing it--I think it sounds pretty cool.
  10:27am P-90:

Oh, you have a grinder. So you can use your palm or whatever to turn the crank...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am tomasz.:

lol that's what i was gonna say @P-90
Avatar 10:29am Marcel M:

Yes, having a grinder is a new thing for me, not used to having it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am JP from KC:

Morning, all! I see we've got some interesting discussion going about a favorite topic of mine, and a touch of madness in the speakers from... George Harrison?! What the...?
Avatar 10:35am Marcel M:

This is interesting: "Synthesist Bernie Krause later pursued legal action against Harrison, claiming that "No Time Or Space" (UK LP side two, US LP side one) was essentially a recording of him demonstrating the Moog III to Harrison (this is detailed in Krause's book Into a Wild Sanctuary). Krause also claimed that the demonstration was recorded and released without his knowledge or consent. Krause's name was originally credited on the front cover under Harrison's cover credit, but it was painted over at Krause's insistence.[1] Despite this, the words "Assisted by Bernie Krause" can still be read from under the silver ink on original LP pressings."
  10:38am Mark R:

This would be consistent with George's plagiarizing the melody of "My Sweet Lord" and borrowing James Taylor's lyric "Something in the way she moves." I know there's nothing new under the sun, but jeez.
  10:39am Mark R:

i am enjoying the sounds, though. WFMU has warped my listening habits completely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Marcel: Well hopefully you'll get a badass scar out of the deal.
  10:40am medifoo:

Dis real
  10:40am dug:

nah. stopped my feed till its over
Avatar 10:41am Marcel M:

@Greg: The nurse assured me there would be a scar.
  10:41am medifoo:

Dang yo
Avatar 10:44am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - we should make up a cool backstory for you to tell people.. "see this 'ere... got this one when I rescued the Mrs from a pack of feral dogs in mehkseee-co"
Avatar 10:44am bobdoesthings:

okay.. maybe not that..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am melinda:

George Harrison continued to challenge the My Sweet Lord lawsuit verdict even after he lost, too.
Avatar 10:45am Marcel M:

I think in this context, him released a record of that guy demoing it is kinda cool.

@Bob: Haha. We'll think of something.
Avatar 10:46am coelacanth:

greetings Marty and all
Avatar 10:47am coelacanth:

Marcel, what'd you do to your thumb?
Avatar 10:49am coelacanth:

...also, scrolling up to try to find out i see Scraps fell. i guess she (he?) got help?...i hope...
  10:51am medifoo:

Avatar 10:54am Marcel M:

Hi Coel, just a dishwashing incident. I'm fine!
Avatar 10:55am coelacanth:

shit, Billy Paul died? i just dug out "me and mrs. jones" again about a week ago.
Avatar 10:56am coelacanth:

so Marcel, you will play again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am tomasz.:

heheh, my old band completely lifted that "we've got options on your time" lyric, speaking of plagiarism
Avatar 10:58am Marcel M:

Yes! Just a week. No biggie! Being dramatic.
Avatar 11:00am coelacanth:

tomasz, sounds more like homage to me. (though Lennon got sued over homage...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am tomasz.:

you are very kind, coel :) we were very fast and loose in that band, we were 18 and just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck. there was at least one sample or lift of some kind in every song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am JP from KC:

Thanks for the awesome set, Marty! I really need it today. The HVAC guys are working in the ceiling above my office, and a vibrating office and the deafening sound of a power saw on metal are SOOOO conducive to concentrating on my work. On the plus side, Being essentially trapped in my office by the ladders in the hallway means I'm much less likely to endure annoying visits from the sales department.
Avatar 11:05am coelacanth:

it sounds fun; but yeah, that would have to be adjusted if you got famous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Ken From Hyde Park:

Happy Friday, Marty fans!
Avatar 11:12am coelacanth:

Marcel@ 10:45 -i bought a multitrack recorder through ebay and the seller left 3 barely started bits of songs on it...mostly synthesiser. 1 had some acoustic git on it.
i couldn't help myself but to finish them. i added nothing but i manipulated what was there.
..i sent him (her?them?) the 3 tracks but i saved copies for myself too. i'd like to put it out there but i wont.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am JP from KC:

Does the name Seawhores remind anyone else of that "blind man at the fish market" joke from the Afroman album?
Avatar 11:13am Marcel M:

@Coelacanth: Thats cool! What did the seller say? Did they respond?
Avatar 11:15am PKNY:

HÏGH ÖN FÏRË!!!!!! \m/
Avatar 11:17am Marcel M:

Off to work, great show Marty bye all.
Avatar 11:17am this guy:

Aw yea, I'm gettin s#!t done now. Keep the heat on.
Avatar 11:17am coelacanth:

he did! he asked if i'm a producer he might've heard of, or something like that! -he was grateful. it seems like he had ideas but was frustrated with the recording process. (that's really a guess though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am JP from KC:

Don't leave us hanging, Coelacanth!
Avatar 11:19am Marcel M:

@Coel: Haha, that cute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am JP from KC:

I'd just be happy to get TO the recording process...
Avatar 11:20am coelacanth:

Avatar 11:20am Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Devin B.:

Joe Preston played on this HoF record - as if they needed to get any heavier.
  11:22am P-90:

I guess there's a line here, on one side, I might recognize that George was a James Taylor fan and recycled a lyric of his, or that My Sweet Lord is kinda inspired by He's So Fine. And I like those things too, so it's a little part of digging George that I dig where his influences and inspirations are coming from. But when I hear George's stuff, I don't feel like I'M "hearing" a lazy, unoriginal ripoff of those "influences", I feel like I'm hearing something new. He's copped a vibe from something that was great to begin with and transformed it. But (to single out an example, completely unfairly perhaps) when I hear Mariah Carey's "song" Fantasy, I just hear someone scatting and trilling in the shower over Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love, and I wish I were just listening to their original instead. She hasn't really created anything new, there's a difference there. (Sorry Mariah! Sure, you sing real good...)
Avatar 11:24am SueAdynamo:

anyone else hearing the spongebob theme in this song?
Avatar 11:25am coelacanth:

well-put P-90. i agree completely. (except i don't know the Mariah Carey song, but that's a common scenario now.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am JP from KC:

Totally, Sue!
Avatar 11:26am coelacanth:

"But when I hear George's stuff, I don't feel like I'M "hearing" a lazy, unoriginal ripoff of those "influences", I feel like I'm hearing something new."

yeah, i feel like an instructive comparison is the way Harrison filtered his influences, versus the way a band like Oasis handled their Beatles influences (uninteresting clones of the most lumpen parts of the Beatles, in general)

oh this song introduced me to Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer as well. most of what i know about US culture is from rap music
Avatar 11:35am bobdoesthings:

don't mean to interrupt marty's show.. but check in your spare time - soundcloud.com...
Avatar 11:40am coelacanth:

i guess this is a silver apples tribute band?
...good though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am tomasz.:

Shadow x RTJ is VERY exciting to the part of me that still really regrets that the Zach De La Rocha solo album that they were both meant to produce tracks for never came out. proper late '90s nostalgia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am tomasz.:

not to suggest that the track itself is in any way throwback, will have to check it out later
  11:43am P-90:

@tomasz: agreed, Oasis/Beatles is a great example of what I was trying to say. You'd hear it and think: OK, I hear what their doing, but what's the point? Where's the real pleasure or reward supposed to be for me as audience, vs. just enjoying the original thing they're quoting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am SeanG:

feeling this
Avatar 11:50am coelacanth:

i'm digging this too.

..."uninteresting clones of the most lumpen parts" puts it well. oasis seemed to tune in to certain aspects of the beatles, but neglected the dynamics.
pretty, but boring.
Avatar 11:52am bobdoesthings:

great show Marty!! many thanks! enjoy your trip back home!
Avatar 11:55am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar 11:57am coelacanth:

Thanks Marty!
ciao peeps.
  12:00pm Mark R:

My last word on "My Sweet Lord" is he was sued over it and lost. The curious thing is Phil Spector produced both "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine." It never occurred to him that, "Hey, this tune sounds familiar. Where have I heard this before?" But I don't mean to diss George too much. I still love "All Things Must Pass," including "My Sweet Lord," and "The Concert for Bangla Desh" set the template for, and IMHO is still the best, of all the rock superstar charity concerts that followed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm SeanG:

  12:02pm Mark R:

This Willie Colon track is a cold-blooded m-f. Way to finish strong, Marty!

  12:03pm Mark R:

Also George seems like the coolest Beatle to hang out with.
