Since 1984, Speed the Plough has been weaving intricate rhythms and melodies into their engaging chamber-rock music. Despite many member changes, they're still based in Haledon, NJ and have re-booted to include a couple of family members in the sextet. Their latest album "Now" also inspired a re-boot of Steve Fallon's Coyote label. Speed the Plough played live on Irene's show.

(aside: I saw Kiki & Herb perform on Sunday night at Joe’s Pube. Excellent show; I’ve seen them often. I got in via the free lottery, and you should try as well. Info here:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm herb.nyc:

WNYC just got turned off, because the music is so much gooder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm fleep:

Unless StP intends to baste stitch the music together, it should be Sowing musical seeds, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, HaHa Fleep! I wrote that up so late after a bit of a stressful work day. I'll correct it.
  9:29pm JakeGould:

@JakeGould - i stole the PUBE line from "family guy", when peter makes a bar in basement. calls it Ye Olde Pube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm fleep:

@JakeGould I surfaced on Dave Hill and Frow Show last night, must have been under your sonar.
  9:35pm JakeGould:

@fleep: I’ve been a bit dizzy/ditzy the past few days. Just got over a very nasty case of food poisoning where basically this past weekend didn’t exist.

Hi Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Mike East:

was trying to figure out where I've heard this Chris Bolger before...it was here...last week. Maybe other times too. Great track.
Avatar 10:46pm Van in DC:

Great album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Chris is a longtime friend of mine and many others at WFMU (and is a station supporter too). Dennis Diken produced the album. Great stuff!
Avatar 10:49pm Van in DC:

Can't believe I was so late, enough to miss Speed the Plough. I will definitely loop back on archive for that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Mike East:

If I could make it to the record fair this year, I'd be searching for a nice copy of Nilsson Schmilsson.
  10:51pm other andrew:

gosh i just love nilsson
Avatar 10:53pm Van in DC:

So from "How can I be sure of you" is it too much of a leap to the collaboration between KaTe & Prince On "Why Should I Love You"?

Avatar 10:57pm Van in DC:

30 yrs since Chernobyl. Wow. I was in WEST Germany when that happened. Banned from donating blood for rest of my life due to proximity.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Andrew Waterloo:

I covered Rififi for my french film project and learned that Tony "Le Stephanois" is basically Tony from St. Etienne.
  11:07pm JakeGould:

@fleep: Frusen Ovjer? I thought it was Frusen Outoheer?
  11:08pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Aren’t you in NYC? Timing not working for the fair this year? Good taste in Nilsson.
  11:08pm Carmichael:

Hi Irene. Man, did I stumble on a stellar set or what!? This is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Mike East:

@JakeGould - I just had a son a month ago, so I'm pretty much on diaper duty for the foreseeable future...also related to that, I have negative disposable income for fun things like records and fairs....maybe next year. I brought my daughter when she was a baby, but I think she was atleast a year old by that point.
  11:11pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Mazel Tov on the new kid!
Avatar 11:11pm Van in DC:

For the record, I highly advise NOT trying to eat Shake Shack cheeseburger left over for three days... ugh.

Pop tarts for dinner ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Irene Trudel:

Congrats on the new baby, Mike!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Mike East:

Thanks! (I'm so goddamn tired)
  11:13pm JakeGould:

@VaninDC: The thing about food is we are—at least most of us are—trained from an early age not to “waste” food. But eating remnants of bad food that might be worth like $2 at most could end up costing you more when you are sick. I am aware of this after getting food sick last week. Just throw the stuff out!
Avatar 11:14pm Van in DC:

Wise words JakeGould
  11:14pm Carmichael:

Mike, continued congrats on your expanding family. 6 or 8 more and you're nearly done ... (I'm Irish)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Irene Trudel:

Jake, I'm just about the same about "saving" food, but not the "fast" kind. Van, I hope your stomach isn't churning!
Avatar 11:16pm Van in DC:

One bite, did not swallow :)

Shake Shack is gourmet but I guess no preservatives, meaning faster spoil...? Not sure. Anyways I'm fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Mike East:

No way Carmichael...we are DONE!
We are on a big "no food waste" kick right now - as I mentioned, money's pretty tight - yesterday I told my family the "5 second rule" has been expanded to the "30 second rule"
  11:17pm JakeGould:

@Irene: Thanks! And on a positive note, being knocked out for 3 days like that after having that death flu earlier in the month has pushed me back on the “Eat healthy; avoid crap; pay $2-3 more for better food…” wagon again. Never again!
  11:18pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Well, I mean that if there is a risk of food getting spoiled is the value of $4-5 worth of food more than you being rendered sick for 2 days? So yeah… I grew up poor… I know how to the stretch food budgets… But there has got to be a limit.
  11:19pm Carmichael:

This Shut Up series of albums are so great. Boiled down Zappa ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Irene Trudel:

Jake, I'm with ya! We've been trying to eat a little healthier-- except for too many nights when we have to order out because we work so late. I cook when I can.
  11:22pm JakeGould:

Yeah, the way I see it nowadays is if I have to work in a scenario where I don’t have a dietary choice the other days when I do have that choice balance it out. I’m no food Nazi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm fleep:

We wanted this to be our high school graduation processional song, almost got it past the vice principal, but he nixed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Irene Trudel:

Carmichael, i often forget what a great guitarist FZ was. Trying to go back and listen to the later material.;
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Mike East:

@JakeGould - I absolutely agree. I'm very careful. I've had food poisoning, too, so I feel your pain. I'm really just trying to economize what we have in the fridge before it even becomes of question and I have to do the smell test.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Mike East:

I worked a gig on Saturday and got really nervous that I got food poisoning from the craft services table, but it turned out I was just exhausted, anxious, and drank way too much coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Tome:

... a meat log and potato . salad and lasagna go a long way,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Mike East:

Enjoyed the heck outta that Zappa set!
  11:26pm Carmichael:

@Irene: I love this series because it filters out the Spike Jonesy smarmy stuff he would occasionally do. Just give me your guitar prowess, Frank.
  11:26pm JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Good plan. The nice thing though about being at home on “diaper duty” is you also theoretically have more time to cook for yourself. Like real cooking that takes a good few hours. Also, after this food poisoning incident I highly recommend a new food thing to deal with exhaustion: Coconut water. It’s not a magic cure-all, but if you are stressed and dehydrated it really balances you out well.
  11:26pm JakeGould:

@Tome: “Meat Log and Potato” is a great band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Tome:

basic food for a crowd and lasts ,, or event ,, catering
  11:27pm Carmichael:

A nice lasagna is 3 days of dinners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Tome:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm fleep:

A deep catalog, plus allegedly "the vault" thousands of songs, locked away.
  11:33pm Carmichael:

You have it spot on, Andrew.
Avatar 11:34pm Van in DC:

@Carm I see what you did there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Tome:

,, almost wanting to compare ,, this to Bowie now ,, but I won't touch it ,,, great tune ,,
  11:34pm Listener Robert:

Catching up on comments, it looks like TWO of you are on "diaper duty", but in different ways.

Most cases of food poisoning I don't think come from too-long storage of food in the refrigerator, but from stuff that was mishandled to begin with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Tome:

..agrees with the above wholeheartedly
Avatar 11:37pm Van in DC:

Bowie, Prince, Pink Floyd, KaTe Bush, all incredible innovators and incredible influence on the musical world. There are others sure but those are the ones that mean the most to me.
  11:37pm Carmichael:

NME interviewer to Eric Clapton: "How does it feel to be the world's best guitar player?"

Clapton: "I have no idea. You should ask Prince."
Avatar 11:38pm Van in DC:

Yep, that is true. Saw that.
And that coming from "God" of the guitar.
Avatar 11:39pm Van in DC:

BTW, this past Sunday, David Gilmour, in his live performance of "Comfortably Numb", in the guitar solo, swerved into "Purple Rain" than back to his song. It was an amazing tribute and totally awesome. It's on the YouTubes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

I watched Purple Rain yesterday
Avatar 🥁 11:43pm βrian:

First heard the news via the Drummer Stream avec Monsieur Charlie. But I'll be turning to Duane to see what his perspective is. Tomorrow, 11 a.m CST, yo.
Avatar 11:44pm Van in DC:

It was said that the Revolution members were so afraid of Prince because every one of them knew he could play their instruments better than they could so they had to strive for perfection.

I don't doubt that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Mike East:

@Brian - that's a good call.
Avatar 11:45pm Van in DC:

Oh man, I've seen Purple Rain like 10 times :)

  11:51pm JakeGould:

My fave Prince quote was a Michael Jackson dis: “Michael Jackson’s album was only called ‘Bad’ because there wasn’t enough room on the sleeve for ‘Pathetic.’”

Avatar 11:57pm Van in DC:

So. Many.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks everybody! Catch you next week.
Avatar 🥁 11:59pm βrian:

I think most food poisoing is a by-product of the industrial food distro system that favors large-batch through-put. Having "contributions" from a thousand cows in one burger increases the odds that something may go *very* wrong. So one bad apple suddenly becomes everybody's problem instead of someone's problem.
Avatar 12:00am slugluv1313:
