I believe the King cousin was Tina Cole. Robbie's wife.
Avatar 9:43am northguineahills:

I don't remember which zine it was (the Wire?), but in '98 I heard that WFMU had a webstream. So, at work, late at night when I was the only one at the office (I was still in college), I tuned it. It was tinny, I believe it was Gateway to Joy. Two years later I moved from FL to here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am melinda:

For a long time I didn't know it was called sunshine pop. In my mind I had it categorized as floaty 60s music.
  9:43am Sam:

Le premier bonheur du jour = The first boner of the day
Avatar 9:46am Cecile:

Melinda, I think a comp was called "Sunshine Pop" and it seemed like a good category for a lot of music.
  9:50am Eric Hat:

Shredding programme, sir. It's keeping me up into these brutal daylight hours...and yet I thank you!
Avatar 9:51am Wild Neil:

@Roberto-It was 1985 for me...in a car in a rural area of NJ farmland not far from the Delaware Water Gap. My musical influence friend turned me onto it...
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

Thanks much, E Hat!
  9:51am lloyd michigan:

The Feelies will always remind me of an annoying girl named Lois who worked so hard to be "alternative." I think they were here favorite band.
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

@lloyd: I wonder what Lois is up to these days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Brian C.:

Feelies playing in Maplewood June 10 & 11. Loved their Monty Hall show!
  9:54am lloyd michigan:

Good question. She was a friend of a friend. I last saw her in the mid-90s. I should try to find out.
Avatar 9:54am Marc Francis:

Every time I hear a Feelies song I wonder what the hell I was doing and how the hell I missed them the first time around...
Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

@Brian: I hear extra special surprises on those June shows. Some kind of anniversary!
  9:55am lloyd michigan:

She's probably the mother of three, married to a lawyer and lives in an upscale Chicago suburb.

Avatar 10:23am Whosondephone:

Avatar 10:23am Joe McG:

@Marcel: This steel drum funk album isn't getting much love here at WFMU, but I LOVE IT!
Avatar 10:25am Marcel M:

@Joe: Haha. Can't imagine why! I'm sure Fabio will play it this week.
  10:25am Brendan:

Cool bass
Avatar 10:26am PKNY:

Good TZAG Joe and everybody! It's funny, while on vacation a few ago, I saw a boat named "Mucho Macho". Who knew it had its own theme music?

And count me in as down with steel drum funk!
Avatar 10:26am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Ha!
  10:29am Jeffy Jazz:

Great set(s), Joe! Thanks for making my Monday AM.

@Brian: Sometimes I do without even trying! @Jeffy: You bet!
Avatar 10:37am fred:

Good morning Joe and listeners
  10:39am Jeffy Jazz:

This is quite a Nugget! Syd and Lennon and soda pop!
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Jeffy: Wish it were in better shape! Hey Fred!
Avatar 10:45am Cecile:

My dad used to sing this song all the time, too. But it's not as gut-wretching as some other ones he used to sing.

Detroit City is not too far from Flint City.
Avatar 10:46am Cecile:

except we didn't know as Detroit City, we knew it as "I WANNA GO HOME"
  10:47am Sarah:

Checking in from Detroit City! ;)
Avatar 10:48am Joe McG:

@Cecile and Sarah: Nice!
Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

call me a special snowflake, but I prefer Otis over Al Green any day. YMMV.
Avatar 10:49am fred:

A month ago, I saw a Surface Noise DJ set. Not as a reference to your show, but many of the records were surface noise or sounded like it. Knowing both DJs, I wouldn't be surprised if they had recorded actual surface noise to a brand new record. I loved it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

Great 45's so far! This Otis Clay is really fabulous. Not sure about the Green/Clay competition, Clay a bit more earthy.
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

but I always liked Dennis Edwards better than David Ruffin. *dodge projectiles*:
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@Cecile: I love both, but Otis always sounds so anguished. Al is almost too cool to sound that broken up.
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

I like earthy.
EXACTLY, Joe. And I feel more like Otis more than I do Al most of my life.
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@fred: I'm a big supporter of surface noise. But I hope they didn't add it in! I'm not such a big fan of that.
Avatar 10:54am Cecile:

Avatar 10:54am βrian:

@Cecile: apropos of nothing, do you recall an old style delicatessen on Broadway in Detroit? It was the kind of place that had everything you couldn't get elsewhere. Eel sandwich? No problem.
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

I drove through Detroit a lot. It was the 80s. I mostly hit the inner ring burbs, Windsor, Tiger Stadium, St. Andrew's and Greektown. I'm sorry now that my vistas were so limited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am ChrisB.:

Which Hudson brother does the Macca impression?
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

the only coney Island place to was in Flint. :(
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

Not that the coneys were bad, far from it.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

@ChrisB: Mark?
Avatar 11:00am fred:

@Joe: One once did a show with a blank vinyl and a blade mounted on the stylus to that the tracks were cut as he played. I think he's also the one who recorded 4 turntablists playing together live to vinyl, each on a separate spiral, so you can only hear one at a time. So that's his thing
Avatar 11:00am βrian:

I doubt this place made it through the 80s. I remember that smell of roasting coffee, mountains of sausage, etc.
Avatar 11:01am Cecile:

that sounds like a wonderful thing, Brian.
  11:02am melinda:

I like Friend

  11:06am Jeffy Jazz:

Didn't the Hudson Bros. have a wacky Saturday morning show in the '70s?
Avatar 11:08am Cecile:

They had a prime time tv show, a Saturday morning show, and they also had an underrated show called Bonkers with the Muppets.
  11:10am Jeffy Jazz:

Wow! I only remember the Sat. morning show. They gave the Banana Splits a good run for their money.
  11:12am Jeffy Jazz:

I think Goldie Hawn had an affair with a Banana Split, but she ended up back in the arms of a Hudson. Good thing. Imagine Kate Hudson with purple hair and orange fur!
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

yeah, I hope the 'Crust starts touring again. That would be a gas!
Avatar 11:14am Cecile:

Glenn Jones from Cul De Sac.

  11:43am Brendan:

Bouhiya! This is great
  11:44am Mark R:

As soon as I read about this being released I knew it wouldn't be long before I started hearing it on FMU. But you're actually the first DJ I've heard playing it. I'm sure you won't be the last!
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

I have that box, it's interesting and gorgeous. I like disc 4 because, probably because th music is the least pure.
Avatar 11:46am Joe McG:

@Mark: A couple of DJs have hit it already and hopefully there will be many more exploring their inner hippie with an audio trip to Moroc.
  11:46am Mark R:

Yep, it pushes all the right buttons, freak-wise.
Avatar 11:48am Brian in UK:

Funny thing, my wife asked me the other week "Do you fancy going to Marrakesh?"
It was more the Rif Mountains that had my attention.
  11:49am Mark R:

Oh, nice segue, I like what you done did there!
