This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Ah, Hyde, wonderful to see you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Carmichael:

Hey there, Bob.
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

Misirlou is one of those songs from this stable of exotica standards that i really do get sick of sometimes, but I love that rendition so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm ifny:

I can't see myself ever getting sick of that rendition. Just don't have it in me.
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Why hello there Ifny, happy to see you
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

this track is from a blues-psych LP, surprisingly
Avatar 7:22pm ndbob:

wow Evan
Avatar 7:25pm hyde:

now reading a cool piece on Irv Teibel (the guy behind the Environments discs) that went up at Atlas Obscura this week: www.atlasobscura.com...
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

@Flash Strap aw shucks, always nice to be seen in radioland. Keep the anti-hits coming -- I'll conquer my deadline yet if this keeps up!
Avatar 7:32pm hyde:

@melinda no prob. i have most of 'em, though only Gentle Rain in a Pine Forest on vinyl.
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

you got it, Ifny
Avatar 7:35pm ndbob:

This is really good - never heard it before
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

I never really thought much of Roberta Flack, as she's pretty mild most of the time, but I'm finding she has her moments. And then there's this, which is just too good.
Avatar 7:37pm ndbob:

@Evan - true - this is surprsing as well as good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm melinda:

This is great.
  7:38pm Little Danny:

Thanks for the heads-up on the Irv Teibel essay. Reading now and listening to Flash.

Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: wow. Wow. And in Iowa!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm in.
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

hey rabbit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm melinda:

Maharishi International University is in Fairfield, IA, and according to wiki he married his 2nd wife there, but I don't know if it mentioned the theme park! Before Iowa City got an Indian restaurant Fairfield was the only place for Indian food so people would sometimes make the 1.5 hour drive just for that. It was an interesting town.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

I've been really enjoying this Sun Ra comp of late

Avatar 8:28pm hyde:

i was thinking the other day of the cool triangular flyer i had (or maybe still have in a box somewhere?) for the Arkestra show i went to at Mass College of Art in either '79 or '80. i might try to find that this weekend. i had it up for years.
  8:31pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Never enough Sun Ra mr, no worries! Just chiming in to say i heard the last 30 minutes via the app and really looking forward to hear the full set in the archive tomorrow. Time to hit the sack here. Laters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm JtotheK:

the Sun Ra was very much appreciated! there's so much in that catalog to learn and listen to. i enjoyed the book about Mr. Ra by John Szwed. and it reminds me i haven't heard 'strange strings' or 'sleeping beauty' or 'languidity' in full even though i've been wanting to for years.
  8:34pm Sadhu Sadhu:

JK: you need to! You're missing out on so much goodness if you don't
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Goodnight to you Sadhu thanks for listening!

And I hear you, J–K. Lanquidity is amazing, btw

jealous of that flyer Hyde
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Love the way they use jungle sounds on this record. and the guitar is really good
Avatar 8:43pm coelacanth:

Excellent version!
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

holy heck, i just went in my kitchen to do the dishes only to find a giant column of ants pouring out of a crack near the cabinet over my kitchen counter. it poured rain here today, and they apparently thought the thing to do was escape their flooded tunnels and make egress into my kitchen. it was like damn Phase IV in there.

this is a cool version of this tune. i listened to the Burning Spear version of this one about a million times in the 80's.
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth:

third world was really good for a while. then they turned into slick disco, basically. (good for that though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm JtotheK:

disco 3000 is another Sun Ra i'd like to seek out. and the batman and robin lp that includes part of the arkestra is great -- especially "Robin's Theme", which was also issued on 45.
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

@ J–K: That's a good one, tho my rip of it is pitiful

@C: that's why I never paid them much mind, I'd heard that stuff much more

@Hyde: never surrender
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

disco 3000 i mean
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

In case you didn't know, Gato passed away on the 2nd of this month
Avatar 8:50pm coelacanth:

me too hyde! actually, "Garvey's Ghost" was one of my first reggae albums. a friend was getting into dub and we smoked some herb, he put that on and i went to heaven. it cracked me up! i'm glad i heard that before the Marcus Garvey album.
Avatar 8:51pm doca:

Hey, Mr. Flash Strap, long time no hear.
Avatar 8:52pm hyde:

@JtotheK fwiw those Sun Ra/Blues Project Batman and Robin tunes (including Robin's Theme) are still up as mp3's on an old post on FMU's Beware the Blog: blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Doca! You've been missed around these parts
Avatar 8:53pm coelacanth:

sorry to hear about the ants, hyde. i've been there.
you may want to lay down diatomaceous earth...or borax(?)
you need to break their route.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Mr. Flash Strap²!
Avatar 8:53pm doca:

Yes! I've been busy and sadly listening mostly to the archives. Good thing is I'm doing interesting things.

@Doug: Hey, Doug!
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Ike! Doug! Welcome, dear ones
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

glad to hear about the interesting things, my friend. that's the news i call good
Avatar 8:55pm hyde:

@coelecanth i generally get scouts every spring that come in for a few weeks and then vanish, so i've always pursued a live and let live ant policy. but this time the whole crew was coming in. may need to take stronger measures.
Avatar 8:55pm coelacanth:

i think the music world has reached the quota of loss this week.
Avatar 8:56pm doca:

@Flash Strap: Things are also a little bit crazy in Brazil, it seems like the country is falling apart. Not so different if Trump wins over there. And how are the news for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm JtotheK:

@hyde - thanks for that link! there's a comment by one "Joe" who wonders if the vocals on Robin's Theme are June Tyson, which I've wondered as well. Sounds like it could be her...
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Oh things are always interesting around here, life-wise, though nothing crazy is going on. Making a lot of art and so forth. Hoping Trump doesn't become too much more of a thing
Avatar 8:59pm coelacanth:

i feel the same hyde; but around the 4th year in this apartment they came in the spring in much larger numbers, then didn't leave for the whole summer. even to this day (6-7 years later) they show up at all times of year...both big ones and small ones.
Avatar 9:00pm doca:

@Flash Strap: That's good, life-wise. Actually, although I fear what Trump represents, I fear more Ted Cruz. He's more "serious" and equally bad.
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

Right there with you Doca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm ifny:

@hyde @coelacanth I had an scout-turned-problem experience last summer -- I tried a lot of things and discovered that by far the best deterrent is lemon juice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm ifny:

Just get those plastic lemon squeezers for convenience and make little lemon 'borders' every day or two where they're coming in. They can't stand it and will go elsewhere. IIRC it took a week or so for me to figure out where to put it and get the message across.
Avatar 9:03pm coelacanth:

ifny, i like that idea because it repels them without killing them...but, what happens to lemon juice after it's sat there for a while, besides get sticky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This Barbieri reminding me a tad of Charlie Haden's Quartet West.
Avatar 9:05pm hyde:

@ifny oooh, that's good advice. i will try that. that should work perfect for where they are coming in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Jeanne' I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm ifny:

@coelacanth Yes, it gets sticky, but I didn't mind much because I put it down in thin lines e.g. along the lintel of the front door. And it's not like you have to do it forever. But yeah, I feel the same about ants and everything else. I don't kill something unless I'm going to eat it (unless it's trying to kill me!).
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

This is such a great soundtrack, my god, just a towering timeless classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - ants don't like powdery stuff - but may just go around it. What's the lemon squeeze stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm ifny:

@hyde I tried everything. That was the clincher :) Lemon juice, and washing walls and floors where the ant scouts had been walking, since they leave little pheromone breadcrumbs which subsequent ants will follow and reinforce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm ifny:

@Revolution Rabbit Just lemon juice in a handy squeeze bottle. Like this: az836796.vo.msecnd.net...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm ifny:

But you could just get a bottle of regular lemon juice and put it in a spray bottle I bet. Not sure if it would get gummed up. I bought a regular bottle and just filled up my little fake lemon squeeze bottle when it got empty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting. People warn citrus attracts roaches tho'. Which may be less of a problem (one advantage of being in the cold cold rural parts here in NewHampshuh).
Avatar 9:12pm coelacanth:

i used to not kill any insect unless it was in the act of hurting me or someone else. i often wouldn't even kill a feeding mosquito -i'd just brush it off.
but, first running a natural food store which would get indian meal moth infestations, then being an avid gardener - i've hardened quite a lot when it comes to invasive, parasitic, venomous, or disease-spreading species.
Avatar 9:13pm hyde:

what the hell! i didn't know gato barbieri died!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@coel: Most of those are far from endangered (for one thing).
Avatar 9:16pm hyde:

@coelacanth haha, yeah, some things you just have to kill. in this cabin i cultivate a cadre of various species of spiders to control the flies and mosquitoes. they won't do crap about the ants, though.
Avatar 9:17pm coelacanth:

yes and wont be in my lifetime either, but i actually feel terrible every time i kill something. (which could be a hundred times in a day during japanese beetle season.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm ifny:

I don't remember Japanese beetle season. But I have fond memories of Japanese cicada season.
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth:

hyde, i do the same. some spiders i don't trust though! (i wont kill a spider though -i put them outside...except brown recluse and black widow.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm ifny:

Full disclosure: I do kill the **** out of bedbugs.
Avatar 9:21pm hyde:

in upstate ny we only have yellow sac spiders that are at all poisonous, and they are only mildly so. i'd move those out, but i've never seen one in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm ifny:

Haven't had them for years, but at one point after trying to get rid of them unsuccessfully after a move, I researched their predators in desperation...
Avatar 9:22pm coelacanth:

ifny, it may depend on the flora. the last few years had me landscaping 3 acres in ct and the j beetles can be devastating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm ifny:

...their primary predator is the stinging house centipede. Like, it stings us.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: very sad but sadly true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm ifny:

coelacanth: oh haha yeah gardening in Japan is ambitious. I've heard stories about gardens devoured down to the ground overnight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm ifny:

@coelacanth: where in JP are you?
Avatar 9:25pm coelacanth:

no no! i'm in upstate(ish) ny and work in connecticut!
-'never been to japan, unfortunately.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

japanese beetles are everywhere, even connecticut
Avatar 9:26pm coelacanth:

...this is why the japanese beetles are so devastating. they have virtually no predators here.
Avatar 9:28pm coelacanth:

i have heard those stories about overnight devastation in japan too though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Doug Schulkind:

The Stinging House Centipedes rock! At least I loved their early stuff, before they sold out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm ifny:

Oooo I get it now. FWIW I'm not in Japan right now either.
Avatar 9:29pm doca:

@Flash Strap: I'm gonna cook something here for dinner and just lurk here, See ya! Thanks for the show!
Avatar 9:29pm coelacanth:

i'm sorry. i was far from specific! it's a specific species. 'probably not called "japanese beetles" in japan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm melinda:

I need to be more ruthless with Japanese beetles this year. My plants always look like hell.
Avatar 9:32pm coelacanth:

yeah Doug. that disco album? what were they thinking!
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

thanks for listening, Doca! have a good sup
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Doug Schulkind:

It was that record with Cyndi Lauper that really turned me off.
Avatar 9:35pm coelacanth:

i've seen plants weaken to near-death because of those beetles. last year i was very diligent and things were much better off at the end of the season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm ifny:

@Doug Schulkind Yeah I'm glad I'm not the only one who found their pesticide endorsements disturbing.
