Kicking off Monday with some Artie Shaw! Top shelf choice, Joe! Morning, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Uncle Michael:

Do we get an all pre-war show, Joe? Because that would be EXCELLENT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Uncle Michael:

I guess 1942 isn't pre-war...but it's pre-post-war.
Avatar 9:09am Joe McG:

Morning, everyone! Some big band theory in effect to start today's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Uncle Michael:

I'm delighted.

For doing the chocolate shake? Wtf? hahaha
Avatar 9:22am Marcel M:

So THATS what Eve did exactly... no wonder. Story never made much sense to me without that anecdote.

Lolita Nation has been OOP for decades. Ironically, I found multiple sealed copies of the original for cheap abt the same time the reissue was released. But, reissue has many extra goodies.

Thanks bandit!
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

Deustche Welle! We used to get that on cable access in English in the 90s! We'd see the top ten videos and it would be Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and a whole bunch of German language soul ballads set in bunkers with blood running down the walls or something. I think the host was named Ingo or Dieter or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Stevel:

  10:06am Billy London:

That sounds kinda amazing.

Sad to read about Getatchew's passing. Not surprising though, I was told last year that his health was declining, especially since he lost his wife
Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

what year did it come out? Sounds like early 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am JP from KC:

Buster Brown sounds like a combination of Bob Seeger and Rod Stewart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sphere:

Buster Brown sounds just like something from 1974 or so. How uncanny.
Avatar 10:23am Cecile:

I was going to say Mott and the Faces. Same thing.

I was thinking Steppenwolf for some reason...

Quo is one of those great one-trick-pony bands like The Ramones or AC/DC...one trick...that kicks ass.
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

I always associate The Cars with Chemistry Lab, titrating to produce some precipitate.
  10:39am BrianFromMA:

Oooh...I can still remember where I was when I first heard Just What I Needed, in my car in the parking lot at the Amity Pharmacy in Cheshire, CT. Saw the Cars open for Bob Seger and get booed off stage. Three months later, same arena, they headlined and everyone was going crazy. Ridiculous...
Avatar 10:40am Cecile:

three for three, Joe!
Avatar 10:41am βrian:

I half expected to hear Gato Barbieri this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Guido from Cologne:

Just yesterday I saw the Wrecking Crew doc and learned this was the very first herb Alpert hit and his band actually were the Wrecking Crew. The Tijuana Brass was a fictional moniker.
  10:42am Brendan:

The Cars were not a pedestrian band.
  10:42am BrianFromMA:

@Brian: You may yet!
Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

Avatar 10:44am Jeff:

This is so funny - it's never before this even occurred to me that there might have been singles pressed of "The Lonely Bull" - it's just indelibly imprinted in my mind as a track from that 12-inch album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Mike Sin:

Happy to be back listening live today!
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@Jeff: This is a pretty early A&M single: It's biege and it says "1005" (probably the label's 5th single).
  10:47am P-90:

This is SO 1974
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Greg from ZONE 5:

Marc Maron had Herb Alpert on recently—interesting conversation.
Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

it was a big hit on the radio and charts.
I think everyone had a Tijuana Brass record back then.
Alpert's an interesting guy.

Avatar 10:50am Jeff:

Some TJB records are definitely among the stuff my Dad bought and played which I still enjoy.
Avatar 10:51am Jeff:

So, Joe, which of today's singles was the picture disk? The Cars?

I heard part of that mic break but pieces got drowned out by the dogfood microwaving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Uncle Michael:

The last new Shuggie disappointed me.
  10:53am Brendan:

Sounds like there is going to be a cautionary message in this song
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@Jeff: Yes, the Cars! Has a fancy car on it.
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Seems to be an argument for promiscuity!

Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Guido from Cologne:

The Lonely Bull
was the first A&M-single, very first pressings must exist under original label name Carnival Records. (I just checked wikipedia)
Avatar 10:55am Joe McG:

Wow, Guido, thanks for the info! I wonder why they started at 1005?
  10:56am icecreamwolf:

Wait, NINE tequilas??
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

this is actually kind of listenable in an Elton John being playful kind of way

I don't suppose there is any chance of a special guest appearance when Sex & Broadcasting comes to Mpls in June.
Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

that's what I was thinking, Poly!

What day in June?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am steveo:

@βrian, I was thinking the same thing. I saw the 4:30 showing yesterday, though; it was interesting and good. Of course to fully capture the awesomeness of WFMU it would have had to have been a week-long movie, depicting each of the shows in their entirety (plus the web shows). ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Greg from ZONE 5:

  11:13am Polyus:

@Cecile - June 8, I believe. Not even on the Trylon website as of last Friday though.
Avatar 11:14am Cecile:

I just had to get that off my chest....!!!

Avatar 11:17am Brian in UK:

Cranky and Freeform do not equate, Captain.
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

By the way, everyone, seeing Greg on the comments board reminds me that we saw "Battleship Potemkin" at FMU on Saturday and it was great. If you get the chance, go check out Morricone Youth play a live soundtrack!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Greg from ZONE 5:

Joe ain't lying! Easily one of the most mind-blowing things I've seen at Monty Hall.

And Greg's seen a lot of stuff at Monty Hall, right, Greg?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Greg from ZONE 5:

Avatar 11:28am Cecile:

this is a great track! Thank you joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Parq:

Loved how, in yesterday's Good Grey obit, they helpfully explained that Gato "means 'cat'". They didn't specifically add "in Spanish". I hope that doesn't confuse readers into thinking that Gato means cat in Brazilian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Greg from ZONE 5:

HOOOOOOONK!!! <shaking fist>

Occasionally I'd lock in on the band, but nothing was more satisfying than when you'd get pulled into the movie and forget that the band was even there. Sort of a bizarro live music experience.
Avatar 11:29am Marcel M:

Or at least, any more than confusing people here that Brazilian is a language? -)
Avatar 11:29am Marcel M:

Avatar 11:30am βrian:

He was Argentinian, no?
Unrelated but, oddly, related:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

I once drunkenly referred to somebody "speaking Austrian" at a party. I'm still embarrassed.
Avatar 11:34am Marcel M:

@Greg/Parq: I said Brazilian until I became very close with a Brazilian dude. It happens!
  11:34am Dean:

You meant Australian, right, Greg?
Avatar 11:34am βrian:

@Dean: you beat me to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Parq:

You guys know the old political joke -- an aide reports to Bush that two Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq. Bush says, "That's horrible -- how many is a brazilian"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am ChrisB.:

@Parq: No, but, HA!
Avatar 11:38am Joe McG:

@Parq: Ha ha!
  11:39am Dean:

Didn't know that one, Parq! How charitable of you to characterize it as a "political" joke.
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

that album is all good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am ChrisB.:

Joe, you may have to create a segment of the show called "The Passing Parade."
Avatar 11:41am V Priceless:

yeah, T-clap...nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Parq:

Dean -- well, of course, Republicans immediately repurposed it as a Clinton joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am ChrisB.:

Doesn't Pete Townsend play bass on this record?
Avatar 11:41am Cecile:

I know he produced it
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:
