  3:05pm Polyus:

I went out and got this Krokofant disc thanks to Irwin.
  3:07pm Laura L:

You can never know what's really going on in the heads of people who close their eyes to meditate and say "Ohmmm..."

@Laura, probably not a lot

And so another, um, electrifying program begins...
  3:13pm Jeffy Jazz:

That's an incredibly realistic rendering of the people who work for ConEd and Nat'l. Grid!

Oh, cool Syd Barrett track!

RIP Merle....Wait...I Mean...RAISE HELL MERLE!!!
  3:17pm BennettCap:

I love you, Irwin!
I hate Courtney Barnett's voice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Volt = Moe
Ohm = Larry
Amp = Curly
Avatar 3:20pm Irwin:

Come now, Bennett. Worse than Ella Fitzgerald?
  3:22pm BennettCap:

Worse than Sarah Vaughn!!
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

Sara Vowell?
  3:23pm JakeGould:

@βrian: Sara Vowell’s voice is the worst.
Avatar 3:24pm βrian:

I don't mind it in small doses, since she can be so amusing. But after a while ...
  3:31pm Clay:

Just heard Merle Haggard died?
Avatar 3:32pm βrian:

I like the Jazz Song.
Avatar 3:32pm northguineahills:

@Clay: Me too, it sucks!
Avatar 3:33pm Irwin:

Mo: "Jazz should never be free. It should be kept under lock and key. It should never even be eligible for parole."
  3:37pm Laura L:

Aw, you're right, Clay, it's true--just looked at the news--The Hagg's gone and left his Strangers behind. Got to see him once--such a great voice.

Today is Merle's 79th birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Goyim in the AM:

False alarm, my dumb cheap internet radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm chris:

that blue smiley track was delightful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm chris:

ergh, it was, but meant to say the dutchess track was delightful.
  3:59pm jan:

Great show, past 4 cuts, in particular!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Parq:

Good pieces about Merle already up on SFGate and (I never thought I'd hear myself say this) Rolling Stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Parq:

Shit, Mr. Lefkowitz got squeezed out of the firm?
  4:03pm Tom chiu of FLUX:

Flux is just a great word, concept, galactical idea.... HI IRWIN !!!!
Avatar 4:05pm Fox (Rā-chul):

For the first time of my life, I'm struck by how similar Joe Frank's voice is to Kevin Conroy (the voice actor of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series). I'm really surprised that's never occurred to me before!
Avatar 4:10pm Fox (Rā-chul):

I had a ritual, listening to Joe Frank and Alan Watts every Thursday, my car parked in a random parking lot south of Sussex County, so I could get reception. Then when I lived in Essex County, I taped them off the radio every week. I still have some somewhere. They were the only thing that got me to not get bored and antsy when trying to take a bath. YAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Ike:

Never noticed that similarity to Kevin Conroy's voice. I wouldn't get them confused, but yeah, it's something in the tone or accent.
Avatar 4:20pm Irwin:

"Hello. Law firm of Lefkowitz, Lefkowitz, Lefkowitz, and Lefkowitz."
"I'd like to speak with Mr. Lefkowitz."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Lefkowitz is in a meeting."
"Then I'd like to speak with Mr. Lefkowitz."
"Mr. Lefkowitz is on the golf course today."
"Then can you please put me thru to Mr. Lefkowitz."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Lefkowitz passed away a few months ago."
"Then how about Mr. Lefkowitz. Is he in?"
  4:28pm Dean:

I'd only heard that joke with Schwartz. Hence your telling of it was surprisingly funny.
  4:30pm Courtney of Morris:

Is joe frank every week now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm chris:

i'm glad that got settled
Avatar 4:31pm Irwin:

Alternate Wednesdays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'm counting on DJ Becky to supply some appropriately mournful Merle Haggard tonight. www.wfmu.org...
  4:48pm Listener Robert:

Huh. I wonder how many people it would work for like Rachul if instead of stuff like my mixture (users.bestweb.net...) or boats, parents would use Joe Frank & Alan Watts to occupy their children in the bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Michael in Seattle:

Wishing Joe Frank all the best: www.gofundme.com...
Avatar 4:52pm Irwin:

Thanks for posting the update, Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Michael in Seattle:

Thank you for this great track.
  4:56pm Cooh John:

This is my favorite Joe Frank episode.
Avatar 4:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

JoeFrank. Batman. Subconsciously registered that. It's a Noir Narrative...
  5:01pm frenchee:

IC: it's a beat movie theme song (Pull My Daisy)
Avatar 5:04pm Irwin:

thank you fwenchee.
Avatar 5:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pull My Daisy :
  5:05pm frenchee:

NP, IC! and thank YOU RRNov63. great song.
  5:06pm Thelma Blitz:

The song at the end of the Joe Frank episode was "Pull My Daisy" by David Amram maybe the words by Kerouac,I forget. It has sexual meaning like "yank my crank.", from a film about the Beats; https://vimeo.com/92403607
  5:07pm Dean:

H&tN, just superb.
Avatar 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...started Soft Machine-ish, then like Zappa - then something else, now back to SM...
Avatar 5:14pm Irwin:

H&tN are part of the Canterbury canon. Softs emerged from that, also Egg, Caravan, Matching Mole, etc.
  5:16pm Dean:

Among the etc., National Health. Pretty sure that was Robert Wyatt guesting on the vocals.
Avatar 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Benefitting from Irudition ! Hear the Caravan similarity too...
  5:18pm Dean:

Earlier Dave Stewart appeared on Khan, a Steve Hillage-led trio. The album endures to this day.
  5:19pm Dean:

It is the Dave Stewart who, accompanying his partner Barbara Gaskin, managed to land on the charts with a cover of "It's My Party."
Avatar 5:23pm Irwin:

NatHealth was sort of a successor to H&tN, much overlapping personnel.
Avatar 5:25pm Irwin:

Richard Sinclair later joined Camel. Great voice.
  5:25pm Dean:

Yeah, and while I know better, I can't help but figure they enjoyed swapping places with the initials (HN to NH) in their names.

And what a successor they were! Bruford drummed with them for a while, yo.

Saw Camel with Sinclair at the Roxy in LA. Wonderful show.
  5:26pm Dean:

Saw them once before, too, with Ferguson and Ward. Damn fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Michael in Seattle:

Irony Cyrus
Avatar 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Dammit but Miley is succeeding on what is a very hard song to cover credibly.
  5:34pm Listener Robert:

The minor-to-major key transition at the very end of "So Happy Together" always brings me eye-watering joy. I don't know why.
Avatar 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like 'Every Little Thing' by The Beatles (written by Paul & sung by John) - 'when I'm w/ her I'm happy' - & not sounding it...in these little things is the mystery & the jeenyus...
  5:37pm Fredericks:

Irwin, sometimes you hit a roll and I feel the need to comment.

Irwin, I have a $15 iTunes card; which of those Dr.Campbell curated comps should I spend it on?
Avatar 5:46pm Irwin:

Campbell curated comps? Don't think so. You want weird, hard bop, electronic, sane Ra, or what? I can rec.
  5:50pm Fredericks:

I love Space Is The Place (both), Jazz In Silhouette, The Futuristic Sounds, Sleeping Beauty and Disco 3000. Hope that helps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Michael in Seattle:

I was pleased to learn that ESP-disk still exists.
Avatar 5:51pm Irwin:

Try "God Is More than Love Can Ever Be," a tight trio set. It's wonderful and very overlooked. Also "Night of the Purple Moon" has some strange but accessible stuff on it. Features Ra playing Rocksichord.
Avatar 5:53pm Irwin:

"Secrets of the Sun" has some great stuff from right after Ra moved to NYC. Recorded at the Choreographer's Workshop, an ad hoc studio. It has "warehouse acoustics" which are very evocative.
  5:59pm Fredericks:

I will keep rereading these recommendations. Thanks for your invaluable input.
