Hey, Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12am coelacanth:

this album truly was a swindle! most tracks are not the sexpistols; and the second i took the shrink wrap off the cover fell apart into 2 separate pieces of very thin paperboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am coelacanth:

aw, i was just gonna compliment your censoring abilities!
Avatar 12:14am Kurt Gottschalk:

hey everybody! thanks for tuning in. killer pistols cover set coming up in the second hour.

  12:14am V Priceless:

It's ok. I heard a few f-bombs on nbc last nite, after 1am!
  12:14am Listener Robert:

Was that a previously expurgated version, or were you making the deletions on the fly?
Avatar 12:15am 37:

yeah man!!!!!! awesome.....black Arabs!
  12:16am mark Flynnn:

Johnny does an impressive Jonathan Richmond, but the recordings that aren't Never Mind The Bullocks make them no more vibrant than Eddie
Avatar 12:19am Kurt Gottschalk:

  12:20am mark Flynnn:

And The Hotrods. PIL was a much better band. ( for whatever reason the finish to my blurb was shortened )

I do like these covers.
  12:21am Listener Robert:

Thanks, KG. Is that to make it easier if someone wants to re-air some of the show outside of safe harbor hours?

Does this qualify? (Suspect Device)

Not complaining, just wondering.
Avatar 12:46am Kurt Gottschalk:

as a cover? it's a live band playing something based on someone else's song.

or does it qualify as punk. either way, that's up to y'all's to decide. i just push buttons.
  12:49am Listener Robert:

So, KG, you felt you had to expurgate the Sex Pistols? Are safe harbor hours not a thing any more?

Okay. I say it qualifies. Keep pushing those buttons KG!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am Andrew Waterloo:

I have a fairly low tolerance for guys with guitars that do inappropriate solo acoustic numbers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am Andrew Waterloo:

I don't even want to think about the Clash in open chords all down down up down
  1:07am rw:

Andrew, it may have been more tolerable if it weren't so loud but it was still pretty stupid. Mostly we thought it was funny that he was asking the question and we answered with let's go. We had some nice Indian food across the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am Andrew Waterloo:

Good work, Chalky! I have to krash now. I will hear the rest at work tomorrow via the archismals. Look at all these comments. Your Arbies are through the roof, baby!
  1:18am rw:

'Night Andrew; Clay!
Avatar 1:18am Jeff:

Kurt watches those Arbies like a hawk, because he knows keeping them up is the only thing which will keep the damn program director off his back.
Avatar 1:19am Kurt Gottschalk:

am i supposed to buy ken a roast beef sandwich?
  1:19am rw:

Kurt, this radio show is fucking awesome.
Avatar 1:22am Jeff:

Just gotta keep those PPMs lit up!
  1:22am JoeRay:

I second that, rw!!!
Avatar 1:23am Clay:

Yeah, if your Arbies slide, Auricle suits will take you aside and give you a good talking to. After all, FUV and BAI are waiting to swoop in anytime an FMU jock drops the ball. It's brutal. Lots of pressure to play more Weezer and Arcade Fire.
Avatar 1:25am Kurt Gottschalk:

can i play covers of weezer and arcade fire?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am pacific standard simon:

Green Day does the best Sex Pistols imitation, by far.
Avatar 1:32am Clay Pigeon:

Yes, Kurt. Your FMU street cred rating will plummet, but you'll pick up fringe listeners in the Wilkes-Barre area and in pockets of Delaware and Northwestern Maryland. Your strong with the female (45-55) bracket, but you've fallen off a bit with 30-40 males who are confused by your gender-stoic print media stubborness. It's your call.
Avatar 1:32am Kurt Gottschalk:

i always thought they were impersonating 999
Avatar 1:32am Kurt Gottschalk:

^green day, i mean
Avatar 1:33am Kurt Gottschalk:

there's only one female (45-55) i'm trying to be strong with, clayton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am pacific standard simon:

Listen to one of their live covers and tell me what you think.
Avatar 1:35am Kurt Gottschalk:

can i just adopt the belief without having to listen to them?
  1:36am V Priceless:

Avatar 1:37am Clay Pigeon:

You've always spoken strongly to that demographic segment, Chalky, with that patented purr of yours. Spot scans in weaker markets reveal that adding the odd Head East cut, or even some Petra might bolster you with working men (45-55). Remember the old adage ... when all else fails ... Livingston Taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am coelacanth:

-i respect green day; but it's a bit too poppy for everyday listening. the main thing is i cannot stand his whiny voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am pacific standard simon:

It's the American way.
Avatar 1:38am Kurt Gottschalk:

head east was an illinois band, if i recall correctly.
Avatar 1:40am Clay Pigeon:

Yes, Kurt. Much like Styx, Starcastle, Dan Fogelberg, Chicago, Cheap Trick, Curtis Mayfield, Rufus, The Buckinghams, and Zwan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am coelacanth:

this shit rules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41am pacific standard simon:

@ coelacanth - "the main thing is i cannot stand his whiny voice" -- that's exactly the same thing I said when a friend played the first Sex Pistols 45 for me back in 1976!
Avatar 1:41am Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar 1:42am Kurt Gottschalk:

ha, simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am coelacanth:

Clay, i don't understand you putting Curtis in a category with those others.
Avatar 1:42am Clay Pigeon:

From Champagne. The singer of Starcastle (Terry Lutrell) was originally in REO Speedwagon (also from Illinois).
Avatar 1:42am Kurt Gottschalk:

  1:45am V Priceless:

Avatar 1:46am Clay Pigeon:

Yes, Coela ... Freddie's Dead and Superfly may not have earned him same=breath mentioning with Peter Cetera and Company, but Mayfield 's catalog has shown itself to be resilient over the years. Sweet Exorcist is still a top seller in New Mexico, for instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am coelacanth:

when i first heard sexpistols (in 1976) i heard a snarl!
...but yes, Johnny's a bit whiny; but not nearly as much so as Billy Joe, who's whiny with no snarl at all. (or at least not a convincing one.)
Avatar 1:47am Kurt Gottschalk:

i think i broke my phone case trying to play that song.

veep, that's what we said in high school (and sufjan stevens said back when he was doing those state records).
Avatar 1:48am Kurt Gottschalk:

clay HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am pacific standard simon:

What came before sets you up for what comes after.
Avatar 1:49am Clay Pigeon:

As far as Head East goes, the visceral impact of Never Been Any Reason from Flat As A Pancake still reverberates from Dekalb to Cairo. Even Veruca Salt members will attest to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am coelacanth:

Clay, to be honest i don't even know any of his late output. i'm pretty sure i wouldn't like it much; but his first album ("Curtis") and "superfly" & his Impressions material is enough to make him one of my heroes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am pacific standard simon:

Sometimes, though, what comes after is a sucker-punch to the head.
Avatar 1:51am Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for bringing the m'west humor, cp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52am coelacanth:

...maybe Curtis went the way of Stevie Wonder. many younger folks don't even know that he was a god among men, as his music got SOO shmaltzy.
Avatar 1:53am Kurt Gottschalk:

NOTHING touches stevie in the early 70s.
Avatar 1:55am Clay Pigeon:

I gotcha Coela ... Mighty Mighty Spade and Whitey, We The People Darker Than Blue, If There's Hell Below (We're All Gonna Go), Move on Up, these were perky numbers. Socially powerful, even. But, hold them up side by side to "No Tell Lover", "Old Days", and even "Hard For ME To Tell You I'm Sorry" and you'll see that Rock N Roll HAll Of Fame Inductees, Chicago, towered above all comers in their era. Especially during the post-Kath, Danny Daucus years, when Laudir Oliviera added his congas to the mix and things really took flight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am coelacanth:

i concur!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am coelacanth:

i don't think you got me, Clay!
  2:02am PJ:

@CSS: Lydon's vocals (and lyrics) are really what elevated the Pistols above all the other punks in their (UK) class - otherwise, it's just speeded up Chuck Berry and Stooges (which I love, but, you know , it had been done before.)
Avatar 2:02am Clay Pigeon:

Am I the only one who thinks Chicago was better than The Beatles? I mean, stack them up side-by-side - track-by-track - and lighter fare like Yesterday, Michelle, A Day In The Life ---- these just can't hold up to 25 Or 6-2-4, Color My World, etc. Big rock writers are starting to concur. In the next year, you'll see a seismic shift in support for the Nice Nine ... Chicago!
Avatar 2:03am Kurt Gottschalk:

clay, yes.
Avatar 2:04am Kurt Gottschalk:

but if you put chicago over e,w+f we got a problem.
Avatar 2:04am Kurt Gottschalk:

where was chicago from?
  2:05am PJ:

@Clay: I do not doubt that there are many Top 40 listeners who will concur that Chicago was the most innovative pop group of all time. As open-minded (and open-mined) as I try to be, I, for one, do not want to meet any of those people.
  2:06am PJ:

Of course, when it comes to Hall & Oates vs. Chicago, all moustaches are off.
Avatar 2:08am Clay Pigeon:

PJ - James Pankow is an H.O. racing enthusiast, a Libra, and a charming conversationalist who is evidently well-versed in both equestrian topics and any sport you care to discuss, including Jai Alai! I saw him on Donahue recently. VERY impressive man.
Avatar 2:09am Clay Pigeon:

Don't even get me started on Danny Seraphine. Makes Buddy Rich sound like he had no rhythm.
Avatar 2:10am Kurt Gottschalk:

how does one not get you started on danny seraphine, clay? asking for a friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am coelacanth:

Clay, i'll be blunt! if you ever played chicago on your show -unless it was from the first album or the (white) 3-4 record live box, i turned your show off!
  2:10am PJ:

And I have a feeling there is at least a little tongue in your cheek, Clay, but if you are going to throw down with the horn-heavy early 70s top 40 groups, Blood Sweat & Tears gets my vote over Chicago (and EWF dusts them both.)
Avatar 2:11am Kurt Gottschalk:

it's kinda freaky how pj and james pankow have the same reverse initials
  2:13am V Priceless:

or The Brooklyn Bridge
Avatar 2:13am Kurt Gottschalk:

no, the brooklyn bridge's initials are "bb"
  2:14am PJ:

But I would appreciate if you could elaborate on the Dennis Wilson/Chicago/James William Guercio/oil extraction/Country Music Television connection,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am coelacanth:

actually, considering that i consider c.1965 - c.1976 the renaissance of creativity in modern music, chicago (post "chicago transit authority") was one of the worst bands ever! (in my so humble opinion!)
Avatar 2:14am Clay Pigeon:

Coela, I considered the 4.2% of the audience which may drop off if any CHicago album after say, VII, is played. It's a risk I take. As for Blood,, Sweat, and Tears, those Hot Pockets eaters can't carry Chicago's collective jock strap, though David Clayton-Thomas moose-throated yowls were amusing for a time. As far as EWF, I'll not disparage them. The outfits were occasionally too pastel in nature, but they could pen a pleasnt enough ditty, and did, on deveral occasions.
  2:15am PJ:

"Initials BB", as Serge G. put it.
  2:15am V Priceless:

ha...referring to horn heavy early 70's pop...they did some swell stuff
Avatar 2:16am Clay Pigeon:

PJ, that whole mess was Walt Parazadier's fault. Just a big misunderstanding which came about after a long night of trombonery at the Caribou Ranch.
Avatar 2:16am Kurt Gottschalk:

i think that was the bardot bridge, pj
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16am coelacanth:

Clay you're awesome!
Avatar 2:16am Kurt Gottschalk:

i think i only know one brooklyn bridge song but it's awesome but i forget what it is
  2:17am V Priceless:

I'm stealing Chicago's Collective Jock Strap....for what exactly I dunno
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18am coelacanth:

(it might be called "the 59th st. bridge song"!)
Avatar 2:18am Clay Pigeon:

If Bob Lamm had given up his Wurlitzer a year earlier, a lot of the bad stuff might not have gone down. Instead, he bought a Kimball "Expression Machine" with Color-Glo keys when other bands were getting synthesizers, and Chicago fell-out for a couple of years and had to play catch-up with lesser bands like Puzzle and Chase. It was wrong. Coela, YOU are awesome. Chalky is awesome. I am full of shit and totally kidding and now I must go to zzzzzzzz. Love you all. Goodnight!
  2:19am PJ:

Clay, I feel like there is a lot of "hot" 70s rock information you are sitting on. If only there was the equivalent of a FOIA request one could file with FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19am coelacanth:

(...or was it "bridge over troubled water"?)
Avatar 2:21am Clay Pigeon:

Melissa Manchester. Had she replaced Jimmy DeWar in Trower's band, as was suggested by many, who knows what might have happened?

I'll not say it again!
Avatar 2:22am Clay Pigeon:

David Gates wrote a great track for Brooklyn Bridge' second LP. Look it up!
  2:23am PJ:

Clay, you know we love you for your sincere appreciation of smooth heartland rock. And, for what it's worth, "Saturday in the Park" will be what saves Bob Lamm when the revolution comes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25am coelacanth:

i too know of but cannot think of a brooklyn bridge song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am coelacanth:

there's got to be a bunch.
