A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I tried waking up at 0430 to lift weights. Did not happen...
Avatar 9:23am rebuketodali:

Good morning, everyone! I finished The Story of the Lost Child last night, so I am having quite a Ferrante hangover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am AndrewC.:

I was awake at 430 this morning. But I sure as hell didn't want to be.
Avatar 9:26am Trouble:

did you feel it was a rewarding ending @rebuketodali? i was bummed, but i was up and down the entire read. a friend is feeling very knackered after book 3, i felt similarly and waited a while before picking up the lost child.
Avatar 9:27am Sem Chumbo:

So fine.
Morning. Trouble, and all. Hi, doca!
Avatar 9:30am Trouble:

bom dia sem chumbo
Avatar 9:31am rebuketodali:

I thought the ending was amazing, but that doesn't mean it wasn't difficult to read. I'm definitely feeling down this morning. The third book was the most difficult for me as well. I just wanted to shake Lenu and yell "You're making a huge mistake!" at her.
Avatar 9:31am Wild Neil:

@Trouble-"Good day unleaded"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am redkayak:

Gosh. I remember seeing Sun Ra on a local (Chicago) station when I was like 11 years old. The show featured Sun & Cat Stevens. I was hooked then, and still am. Maybe I lived on Saturn in a past life?

Good Morning Trouble makers around the world!
Avatar 9:34am Wild Neil:

My mom, an early jazz enthusiast never heard of Sun Ra and she is 88. I was disappointed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

I got a second wind and did my taxes into the wee hours of Monday morning. I'm glad that chore is finished.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am redkayak:

@neil If I'd missed that one program, probably never would had heard of him. Good luck, I reckon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Adrian in London:

@Trouble I've just been talking about the Ferrantes with someone on Twitter. I just couldn;t get into them and gave up a third of the way through book 1. The Contessa struggled through the lot, cos once you;ve read two you might as well finish but I know she thought book 3 was particularly tedious. But some people really love them.

Avatar 9:49am just dc pat:

this tune is great. Duane/Miriam Eddy + Lee Hazelwood, eh?
Avatar 9:51am Trouble:

merci peeps. @sugarwolf: that seems to be happening a lot lately. is it our fault? buying yard directly from the sheep? this time of year I am dying to see some new born baby lambs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Parq:

Well, there are DJs who just drop the needle, and there are DJs -- Mobey being the obvious example, and then there are the guys who play the Tomorrowland fest in Belgium -- whose use of recorded sound is transformative enough to count as a creative work in its own right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Parq:

Firefox spell-check won't take "transformative". Well pardon freaking me.
Avatar 9:57am rebuketodali:

@Adrian I can definitely see how readers would find the Neapolitan novels tedious. I didn't find them tedious per se, but there were times while reading them that I felt as if Ferrante were taking that "A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us" Kafka quote very seriously. I love them, but I feel emotionally raw reading them.
Avatar 9:58am just dc pat:

Anybody ever read the Master and Margarita? about 1/3 of the way through and it's totally nuts.
Avatar 9:58am Van in DC:

The top half of that art is so mysterious. Opaque even.
Avatar 10:00am rebuketodali:

@just dc pat Yes! Want to reread sometime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Adrian in London:

@DC PAT Yes, it's marvellous. Read it years ago but should read it again when I get a moment.

SuPeR TuNeS Abound!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Adrian in London:

@rebuketodali I seem to be less forgiving with boring books than films. I loved Winter Sleep, the three and a quarter hour Turkish film in which very little happened but if books drag and drag I just move on to something else. I read all of Proust 20-page desrciption of a hawthorn bush so I feel I've done my time!
Avatar 10:04am just dc pat:

@Adrian: it just keeps getting weirder and weirder--bordering on pure horror. I really dig it but I can't remember who lent it to me. Crazy.
Avatar 10:05am Van in DC:

Gurdjeff. Now KaTe will be on my mind all day long. It's nearly killing me, but what a lovely feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Adrian in London:

@DC Pat Yes, that sounds about right!
Avatar 10:06am Trouble:

ooooh @ kevlicki! i am on their mailing list and was all ready to show up to help out on sheep shearing day this month until they last minute changed it to a tuesday.... super drats
  10:08am sugarwolf:

@kevlicki: I have driven by it! Gonna see if my friend wants to go when her nephews come up from Texas this summer... We also want to do the walkway over the Hudson but the little boys are probably to young for it...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Priscilla:

Just joining, and I finished The Story of the Lost Child on Sunday. Man, what an INCREDIBLE story. One of my Italian teachers always made fun of us Americans for expecting happy endings. "That's not life!"
Avatar 10:14am just dc pat:

I love Sparkle Moore.
Avatar 10:16am chromaphone:

I would love to see video of Sparkle performing. Never have.

I don't think Gabor would be so into this track. Just a hunch.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am 1ke:

@DC Pat, yes, TM&M is entertainingly bonkers. It makes a *little* more sense if you know Russian history of that time, and some of the translations are much better than others. Either of the ones by pairs of translators are good.

@Trouble Do you know if Sex & Broadcasting will be released online/DVD/BluRay etc?
Avatar 10:39am just dc pat:

@1ke: I apparently have a decent copy with all the parts restored. It's right up my alley.

Avatar 10:44am Trouble:

@adrian: don't know when but it is a plan for sure

Avatar 10:47am just dc pat:

Joe Meek! Great show trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Trouble and all!
  10:54am βrian:

I've always found it interesting that in French one can say "yes" while breathing in.
Avatar 10:54am Van in DC:

mmm yes. Amsterdam Falafel take out for lunch amid the gorgeous tidal basin cherry blossoms. Time to fly and play tourist, thanks Trouble!
  10:54am Sam:

Yeah, the French do that a lot, especially in Paris
  10:55am paul:

If you've never seen the biopic about Joe Meek, you should.
Avatar 10:55am just dc pat:

OH man...been a while since I had Amsterdam Falafel. They opened on about a mile from my office. May go down there myself.
  10:56am Sam:

Making the sound "oui" is so much more effortless than "yes"
Avatar 10:57am just dc pat:

but not as effortless as "mm-hmm"
Avatar 10:59am βrian:

Are the clappers credited in this piece?
Avatar 11:03am rebuketodali:

@Priscilla - Yes, this is why I loved the ending. It wasn't happy, but I certainly felt closure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Priscilla:

Ferrante's voice just pierced my brain — I found it addictive. I could not stop reading. I wondered if it's a gender thing?
Avatar 11:10am chromaphone:

Indian kazoo?
Avatar 11:10am Trouble:

@priscilla, rebuketodali: so fab that you are conversing about this. wish i could join in, but those pesky records await
  11:10am Polyus:

I can't believe how good Annette Peacock is, or that I am just figuring that out now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Priscilla:

Now that my nest is empty, I need to find a book club.
  11:12am sugarwolf:

@paul: I aw the Joe Meek and found it more upsetting than I thought it would be...
Avatar 11:13am chromaphone:

I was just wondering if they ever finished the Meek doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am common:

good day trouble and people.
  11:14am paul:

@sugarwolf, It's pretty disturbing. But pretty accurate according to what I've read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Jeff Golick:

Annette Peacock is the bomb.
Avatar 11:17am Honeybear:

Lovely program today, Trouble.
Avatar 11:17am chromaphone:

I think it's interesting that Meek is so influential and so highly regarded as a producer but his records sound so very low fi.
  11:18am sugarwolf:

@paul: it was only briefly touched on in the movie but I am sad thinking about all the soldiers from WW1 obviously suffering from PTSD/shell shock and it really wasn't dealt with at all.
Avatar 11:19am rebuketodali:

@Priscilla - Yes, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we have so few artistic representations of female friendship, so the Neapolitan novels feel like such a gift. But I also am wary of gendering the books too much.
  11:20am paul:

@sugarwolf, very sad, but true. Even Vietnam vets up until a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Priscilla:

Agree, just wonder if the so true descriptions of things like sex and childbirth are off-putting to men.

alright, that's it. Have to put Neapolitan books on my list..
Avatar 11:29am βrian:

"Crepuscule" is my safe-word.
Avatar 11:31am rebuketodali:

Oh yes, I do agree. They hardly romanticize sex, childbirth, and motherhood. That being said, I do have male friends who LOVE the books.

Hey Trouble. You mentioned that you had no idea why Gilles Peterson's face was in the CD booklet of Sun Ra and His Arkestra's compilation out on Strut. It's because Gilles selected those 34 tracks. The front cover even says "Gilles Peterson Presents." DJs don't just put a needle on the record. A real DJ knows their music, music history, and knows how to seamlessly mix everything together. This is a lifelong practice as with other musical art forms, and why coveted DJs exist. People respect and admire their deep music knowledge and how they share it with the world thru DJing.
  10:52am Tony Oliveira:

beautiful playlist, trouble. The "Struggle of the magicians" remembered me the song "Verdes Anos" from Carlos Paredes. Both beautiful songs. greetings from Portugal!
