Seriously @efd! I heard you were quite ill during your show. I had to miss mine yesterday and I'm still in bed. Are you feeling better?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Gaylord Fields:

That Death by Unga Bunga song was the bee's mammaries! And to think there's more where that came from today — plus Everlovin' DION!!! Oh, Magoo, you've done it again!

@djsheilab: Still unwell, but feeling optimistic for tomorrow's show, despite all evidence. Sleeping till 2 pm today didn't hurt. Hope you're not in this condition much longer.

Todd-o-phonic Todd is the human mosquito carrying the WFMU strain of the Zika virus. Hence his own immunity.

Avatar 4:27pm geezerette:

American Rock! Dion's singing is so positive, cheerful and sweet! Can't hear his music without singing along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Gaylord Fields:

@Todd-o-phonic: I was just coning on to say Dion's mid-'60s songs are highly underrated when you spoke those oh so true words.

He really could do it all — and with every bit of his heart and soul!
Avatar 4:31pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord: Amen, brother!
  4:33pm IFisher:

Must also cite Dion's 70s work. Born to Be With You is an excellent album
Avatar 4:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He never lost the DooWop street cred authenticity feeling...thing...but was open-minded to progress successfully w/out embarrassment....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Gaylord Fields:

Seriously: Dion is a GREAT GREAT GREAT doo-wop/blues/R&B/pop-standard/folk-rock/bossa-nova/gospel singer!
  4:38pm IFisher:

And he's recipient of a Very Exclusive accolade - put on the cover of Sgt Pepper
Avatar 4:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bobby Darin & Neil Diamond are totally extraordinary - but there's none of that Genre confusion w/ Dion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Gaylord Fields:

And I'd prefer to think of that song as being Dion duetting with Jerry Landis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@IFisher: Yep, along with Horace Debussy Jones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Gaylord Fields:

And, in fitting fashion, Slip Mahoney was airbrushed off the cover because he was trying to scam the Beatles for $$$!
  4:43pm P-90:

Skip Mahoney, who needs 'im?
  4:45pm IFisher:

Had to look up that H.D. Jones reference, Gaylord. I'm smiling from ear to ear

Avatar 4:50pm Fatherflot:

The Dion Superset was a revelation. Just awesome. Thanks Todd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Or Dion and his beautiful Bronx cadences.
Avatar 4:57pm geezerette:

Love "Ruby Baby"! The Beatles did a great cover. Might have been as back up for Tony Sheridan? Great version in any case.
Avatar 4:57pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Rob Santos alert!
Avatar 4:59pm djsheilab:

Ha!! Dion name-drops Rob!
Avatar 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:06pm geezerette:

Avatar 5:07pm djsheilab:

@Geezerette Couldn't agree more!
Avatar 5:07pm geezerette:

Avatar 5:10pm geezerette:

Avatar 5:11pm BadGuyZero:

I wish I could be at that Dion / Ronnie Spector show.
Avatar 5:11pm djsheilab:

@Geezerette What a lovely thing to say. Thanks!
Avatar 5:11pm Fatherflot:

Lou Reed inducted Dion into the Rock Hall. I've been arguing for a while that Doo Wop is the secret substratum of a lot of great Velvets tunes. "White Light/White Heat" is pure Doo Wop. Of course "Waiting for the Man" is pure barbershop quartet.
Avatar 5:11pm djsheilab:

@BadGuyZero Me too! So gutted that I have to miss it.
Avatar 5:12pm djsheilab:

TOPT!! AMAAAAAAAAAAZING interview!!!! So much heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Zach:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@Zach: Damn skippy straight it was!
Avatar 5:13pm Fatherflot:

Yeah, did you always think she had a French Canadian accent?
Avatar 5:13pm On the Yazoo:

I'd like to see him put together a Blues show.
Avatar 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

DooWop generally too much left out of 'Rock Histories' - no? The great Myth that there was nothing between Elvis in the Army & TheBeatles in America. True - & Not True.
Avatar 5:14pm geezerette:

Garden Party! Such a great song.Perfect transition Todd!
  5:14pm P-90:

Great job, Todd! I love that guy, how could anyone not? Ultracool segue to Rick, after quoting this to Dion in the interview.

Avatar 5:15pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Thanks @geezerette and @P-90
Avatar 5:16pm Fatherflot:

Rabbit -- you are so right. Doo Wop iwas to Northeast white kids what the blues were for southern kids and the brits who picked up on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm DonJuanTijuana:

Cool interview TOPT...learned a lot about Dion that I had no clue about
Avatar 5:18pm Fatherflot:

You too are not a pizza, Todd
  5:18pm P-90:

Of course Dion and Paul Simon are musically simpatico, Doo Wop is the key substrate Paul's music too, was a Doo Wopper before he was a Folkie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: This accepted idea that there was this dearth of good rock 'n' roll between the downfall of Elvis/Little Richard/Chuck Berry ca. 1960 and the advent of the British Invasion in 1964 is demonstrably and slanderously false!
Avatar 5:22pm Fatherflot:

Gaylord -- it's from the same Time-Life book of Boomer cliches that they used to write the scripts for Mad Men
Avatar 5:22pm geezerette:

@Gaylord: As you elegantly prove every week!
  5:22pm IFisher:

Wow, I gotta go check my head. Killed by Death by Unga Bunga. Beautiful interview with Dion. Smashing set list. Insightful & witty listener posts. A Cornucopia of Goodness! Thank you all for a freaking great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Here's an earlier intersection of Paul Simon and Dion, courtesy of a song written by Simon's alter ego, Jerry Landis, and performed by his group Tico and the Triunphs (Marty Cooper on lead vox):
