Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

  4:46pm Lyle:

Sonic Youth, eh? I recall quite clearly one November morning in 1975. I was on the road with a reconfigured (smaller for monetary reasons) Ralph Marterie Orchestra. Not quite sure where we were. Somewhere upstate in New York. Phonecia, I believe it was. At any rate, the bus was not functioning properly. At cruising speed it worked quite well, but when it was idling, it made a high whining kind of sound - just the type of pitch that could quickly drive a busload of men to madness. Ralph was particularly incensed as he mercilessly berated the bus repairman that had been dispatched to the scene. About that time I noticed a young man skulking around on the periphery of the mechanical work that was happening. He had a little beigh Mayfair tape recorder in hand and he was documenting the sound of the enfeebled bus. Turns out he was a boy called Thirsty Moore. Later, he would go by the more sophisticated moniker of Thurston, and he would incorporate the sound of our troubled bus into part of the random noise utilized on Sonic Youth's "Bad Moon Rising" record. Funny how things work out.
  4:47pm Lyle:

*beige (sorry, hands are arthritic these days, but I can still work a T-bone slide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Alejandro in TO:

Thanks for that story, Lyle!
Avatar 4:49pm MenfussMike:

Hopefully Ralph was thinking of the white light of the holy spirit when he sang that
Avatar 4:51pm steve portland:

he's on record saying he was thinking of the white light of his big fat ass
Avatar 4:55pm MenfussMike:

i'd almost bet my Velvet Underground collection that Ralph Stanley has never used the word ass as a reference to his derriere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm steve:

Lyle who are you and may i subscribe to your newsletter
  4:57pm Lyle:

Ralph Marterie had a small rear end, actually. I saw it on many occasions. He had a small tattoo of Tippi Hedren on it.
  4:58pm Lyle:

@Steve - No newsletter. WFMU is where I share my thoughts these days. I feel at home here with you people. The big bands are all but done for, especially now with Frank Jr. gone.

Hey!...that's a video of JohnnyThunders...c'mon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Cliff:

I remember Kurt Gottschalk one time playing like 5 or 6 ASMR videos all at the same time, it was an unintelligible mass of creepy whispering
  5:22pm Lyle:

Thanks, Lopez. You just reminded me of the time I spent a few days with Trini Lopez' band. I think we were in California, but after all these years, dates and places get all mixed together in my mind. I do recall that Trini had an affinity for Zagnut bars! It wasn't uncommon for him to eat seven or eight of them a day, and often we would have to stop at a gas station or a candy store for him to bolster his supply. One night we were just leaving Palo Alto, on our way north to a one-nighter in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Trini realized he was out of Zagnut bars and he became visibly upset. So much so that when the union bus driver refused to stop the bus citing regulations about frequency of stops and unreasonable artist demands, Trini took one of his guitars (a Fender coronado?) and smashed it in the aisle of the bus! A splinter from the guitar lodged in Mickey Jones forehead. Mickey was our drummer who would also play with Bob Dylan. Well, Mickey took trini by the lapels and proceeded to slap him about the neck and head a few times before he got off at the next stop and quit the band. Trini never mentioned this event again, nor did he eat another Zagnut bar. The stress of the road made many musicians do foolish things. Still does, I guess.

Fadoul is too good. Righteous springtime action

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Alejandro in TO:

Aye Lyle, yes Zagnut bars must have been quite an anchor for him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Carmichael:

Hiya Brian and cool people. I remember Kurt Gottschalk once playing Phil Collins' entire catalog. At the same time. It was awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Cliff:

Yes Carmichael, he did that at least a couple times actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Cliff:

And he labeled it "Phil Fucking Collins" on the playlist :D
Avatar 5:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 5:32pm geezerette:

Really fun show BT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Cliff:

(scrolls up) I really like the idea of Lyle's tour bus breaking down inspiring the sound of Sonic Youth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm JP from KC:

I go away for a while, and when I come back, there's some arabic soul and LYLE'S HERE! All is right with the world. Keep telling those awesome stories, Lyle.
Avatar 5:42pm geezerette:

Agree with Cliff & JP from KC: Lyle needs a show. (:c)
Avatar 5:42pm Brian Turner:

These read like a Bananafish interview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm JP from KC:

At the very least, someone should bring back Beware of the Blog, if for no other reason than to make Lyle a regular contributor.
Avatar 5:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

JP = good point. Still missing my regular dose of the reel-to-reel catacombs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm JP from KC:

I'd happily moderate, but with a full-time job, excruciatingly long commute, and the usual responsibilities of adulthood, there's no way I've got the time.
Avatar 5:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

also: this Avram is lovely.
Avatar 5:59pm Lopez:
