Pre-heya Tony and future moneygivers.
Avatar 11:28am Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Carmichael! You're here bright and early – or dark and early, I guess, depending where you are.
Avatar 11:31am Tony Coulter:

To make sure your pledge is credited to this show you must:

(1) Pledge by clicking the PLEDGE NOW button at the top of the playlist, or the "pledge here" link below it.

(2) Make sure "Tony Coulter" is selected in the program drop-down menu.

(3) Click the + (plus) button where it says CLICK TO ADD SHOW. You must do this even if my name is already there.

Here is a handy graphic explaining the process: blogfiles.wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:41am Tony Coulter:

My marathon premium this year is called "Waka Wave." It's a comp of fab Japanese stuff from the '80s and it's yours for a pledge of $75. Take a gander at the cover: blogfiles.wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:52am Tony Coulter:

And just like last week, my comments co-host is Mayuko of Play Vertigo fame. Thanks, Mayuko!!!
Avatar 11:54am Tony Coulter:

Anyway, enough with the technical details. Stay tuned for lots of great music today, along with the haranguing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

I'm actually here for the technical details.
Avatar 11:55am Tony Coulter:

Hey Jeff!

OK, I'll scrap the music and spend as much time as possible on the boring stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

I'm at your mercy.
Avatar 11:57am Tony Coulter:

For your pledge to go through, you must rub two sticks together while saying the devil's secret name backwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

I'm here to try and remain conscious till I can leave work. It's spring break and I'M SO BORED.
Avatar 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Uncle Michael!

I can't promise you beachball with drunken coeds, but I'll try to keep you amused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Carmichael:

I swagged for life already. Still waiting for my mini boom box to appear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Carmichael:

Is Kenzo still the technical contact for this kind of stuff? I don't want to look like a deadbeat, unless of course I am.
Avatar 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, thank you, Carmichael!!
Avatar 12:01pm Mayuko:

Avatar 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Mayuko!!!
Avatar 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

There's a hippie trying to kill me!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Michael:

Carm - I think Joe McGasko is your point of contact re: your mini boom box. He was for me last year.
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

only $20 or more pledge can enter you into the drawing win this Paul Ngozi, and you can help the station and Tony, that's a great deal! Your chance of winning is pretty good right now since the show just started!
Avatar 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

I will admit one embarrassing thing about myself for each pledge that comes in today. Here's my first admission: The headphones I am now using cost only $20 new. They are truly bottom of the line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Uncle Michael:

Do the Elves take travelers cheques?
Avatar 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

We will be drawing for the Paul Ngozi in around 20 minutes. Twenty smackeroos is all it takes to have a good chance of winning it. Comes with free giant hippie.
Avatar 12:11pm Mayuko:

In the meantime, I'd like to thank some pledgers!

Our own Uncle Michael of Hinky Dinky Time!

And not our uncle, but Michael who generously pledged to this show, from New York, NY!

Thank you for your pledges! Please keep it coming, dear listeners! Where are other Michaels? Follow your fellow Michaels and help us!!
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael: Yep -- even interdimensional travelers' checks.
Avatar 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

And remember: You don't have to be named Michael to pledge.
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Michael left a mysterious comment for you, Tony... just one word "please". Not sure what he meant, but I repeat that. "PLEASE!"
  12:13pm Dean:

Pledged last week. Not named Michael, but I am an uncle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Carmichael:

Mikey, Mickey, Miguel, Momo and Mack may also pledge.
Avatar 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks again, Uncle Dean!
Avatar 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

The Taco cut on now is on my premium, "Waka Wave." The whole sushi enchilada is yours for a pledge of $75!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Carmichael:

I left it on Liz's show accidentally, and am now entranced by Mdou Moctar. I'll be here in a minute.
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

That's Ryuichi Sakamoto playin' the piano!
Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

Alright! Lewis from Minneaplis checking in with a generous pledge! Thank you!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm DCE:

oof I failed on those instructions, Tony, second week in a row!! I love Liz too though.
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

ah, thank you for your pledge, DCE!!
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

don't forget to click that little plus + button when you pledge so that it gets credited to Tony! graphic instruction: blogfiles.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm JtotheK:

hello everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

Argh, missed the first bit. Parental medical mayhem. Pledge, all, those who can and maybe those who have! Tony's one of the PILLARS of WFMU. Support him and you support this whole dang conglomeration!
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, thanks much for the pledge, DCE!! And no worries: We all love Liz!!
Avatar 12:23pm Mayuko:

Hallos, JtotheK! james!
Avatar 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, big greets to ya both, JtotheK and James!!!
Avatar 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Pledge now and get in the running for this Ngozi disc!! We'll be drawing for it in around 10 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm JtotheK:

@carmichael -- i am also a swag for lifer but sans-boombox...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

Tony will even take money with other J.R.R. Tolkien characters besides Aragorn, such as Saruman, Gimli, or X-Ray Burns.
Avatar 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

I'll take cowrie shells, my friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

I think with the new system the boomboxes are enabled manually and a little patience is the key.
Avatar 12:28pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cecile!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Carmichael:

@JtotheK: I just e-mailed Joe McGasko. Perhaps he can help.
Avatar 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

Jeez, what a master drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Carmichael:

Filthy hippies.
Avatar 12:31pm Cecile:

that's Jesus freak to you, sinner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Jeff Golick:

I think with the new system each boombox is assembled separately from Black Forest tree bark, fired in the Kilns of Mordor, then polished at Foxcom, before being hand-hung on each WFMU profile page by Ken Freedman.
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

ok, I'd like to thank: our own Daniel Blumin from WFMU!! Thank you Daniel for your help! I'm personally thankful to him cos he was who first told me about Tony's show!
Avatar 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Carmichael:

@Jeff: That's just a Led Zeppelin song you're referencing. Except for the Ken Freedman part. Hopefully.
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

Prize winner announcement time!

The lucky winner who gets Paul Ngozi is...

Lewis!! from Minneaplis!!!

Congratulations and thank you so much for your support!!

Please keep the pledges coming, people!
Avatar 12:34pm Cecile:

YES. I still dig this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:34pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Carmichael:

A different song. Not this one ...
Avatar 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

YAY FOR LEWIS!! Don't let the giant hippies get you!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm JtotheK:

re: boomboxes - i also didn't have one last year, so i figured not having one this year was a sign there were figures in high places conspiring against me. isn't that one of the proverbs for paranoids?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Lewis:

did I miss something (like winning a prize)? step out of the office for a moment and the world keeps on turning - cool...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Jeff Golick:

I think the proverb is, "In the land of no boomboxes, the one with the boombox is actually super-annoying and always playing Huey Lewis."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

Proverbs For Paranoids will be my 2017 DJ Premium.
Avatar 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

The next prize on offer is from synth-punkers Metal Urbain. Pledge a little pledge and it could be yours!!!
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Lewis from Minneapolis left a very nice comment: "Here\'s to the dissolution of physical space in radio... And to the broadening of my musical horizons thereunto appertaining..." broadening of musical horizons is exactly what Tony has been doing for everyone!
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

oh there you are Lewis, THANKS AGAIN!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

@Carmichael: good call.
Avatar 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

"You been cooling, and I been drooling." Immortal words to live by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Jeff Golick:

And that is why Led Zep is ruling.
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

$75 or more pledge will get you Tony's DJ premium "Waka Wave" blogfiles.wfmu.org... & WFMU T-shirt, bumper sticker! wfmu.org...
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

BTW, Suicide were the first synth-punk band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Carmichael:

@Jeff: I was wearing my FMU ThinkTrak Cone Hat, which I got for a pledge of 60,000 pesos and a bag of Cuties. It's on the secret menu.
Avatar 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, maybe you're right. Don't tell that to Metal Urbain, though.
Avatar 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

(comment above aimed straight at Cecile)
Avatar 12:45pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

HEY! We need some pledges coming in. Our pledge IQ is currently only 21.
  12:47pm Dean:

Suicide predates even Heldon and Cabaret Voltaire. Yow.
Avatar 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Well, Silver Apples predates Suicide, so .. who knows where it all begins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Carmichael:

Gershon Kingsley was not punk, so he's out.
Avatar 12:49pm Cecile:

Silver Apples, probably. But they weren't anywhere as nihilistic as Suicide could be.
  12:49pm Dean:

Bell Labs: https://www.discogs.com/Bell-Telephone-Laboratories-Inc-Synthesized-Speech/release/3785207
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

We need more pledgers!! There are so many bands/music that you would've never heard if Tony didn't spend all his time digging them out and play on this show! Those are all musical/radio treasures. This program deserves the same amount of support any big libraries receive. Please pledge, people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm listener james from westwood:

Man, that computer singing "Daisy" still gives me chills. Milestone in sound history.
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

Avatar 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Here's another cut from my premium, "Waka Wave"! Yours for a pledge of $75 (plus you get a stylish t-shirt!)
Avatar 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 12:54pm Mayuko:

Come one people, now is the best time to pledge - you have a pretty great chance of winning Metal Urbain! Only for $20 or more pledge!
  12:56pm Linda:

I pledged 75.00 online$ but I think accidently credited someone else! Oh dear...
Avatar 12:58pm Mayuko:

oh no! I am sorry Linda, but it helps the station and we very much appreciate your generous pledge!
Avatar 12:58pm Cecile:

give something away, Tony!
Avatar 12:59pm Cecile:

before I head out to lunch, that is.
  1:00pm Linda:

Is it possible to still be in the running for the Metal Urbain even though I credited wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Lewis:

@Cecile - you have it backwards. Go out to lunch and then you win... take if from me, i Know..
Avatar 1:01pm Mayuko:

Hooray!! Vince! from Glen Cove, NY, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PLEDGE!
Avatar 1:01pm Cecile:

good point...
Avatar 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

@ Linda: Thanks very much anyhow, Linda! I very much appreciate that you wanted to pledge to this show. And, of course, you'll still get my premium if you selected it.
  1:02pm Linda:

I did! I love your show
  1:02pm Linda:

I did! I love your show
Avatar 1:03pm V Priceless:

Hey Tony & Mayuko! Thanks for all the great programming - you are most velcome!
Avatar 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

@ Linda: Thanks so much, Linda. I'd love for you to be included in the drawing but I'm not sure the powers that be would approve.
Avatar 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 1:06pm Mayuko:

Avatar 1:07pm V Priceless:

Avatar 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

Yes! It is calling out to all of you. Don't send dope, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm doctorjazz:

Hey, just made it here, enjoying the sounds
Avatar 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

Is this the same Westwood, ya think?
Avatar 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, doctorjazz!!!
Avatar 1:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Carmichael 12:01: For questions about WFMU's new Audience Engine pledge pages, talk to Joe M. KenzoDB is still the displayer of S4L radios and hearts on playlists and profiles, but it's now up to AE to use the KDB API to indicate when to turn them on and off, and AE hasn't been doing that. However, the radios can also be turned on by human hands via a KDB admin page, and so you can ask Joe M. to flip yours on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm listener james from westwood:

My guess is it's the SoCal Westwood, which is where folks often assume I am. I wish! Much better weather!
Avatar 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Kenzo!!! Greetings!
Avatar 1:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Carmichael:

This sounds a lot like Traffic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm listener james from westwood:

Where else are ya gonna hear Robert Wyatt in the NYC area? Hell, even on net radio? You have to curb Spotify like a dyspeptic Dachshund to make it play anything decent. Or, you can pop on Tony Coulter and WFMU any time of the motherloving day and get wonderful tunes and amazing sets without constantly smacking the side of your server to stop sneaking in the odd George Michael Christmas song.
  1:21pm Linda:

Hi Mayuko- I just emailed you.
Avatar 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

I am starting a new streaming service called Pimplefy.
  1:22pm Linda:

Thank you so much!
Avatar 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Enjoy the prize, Linda!
Avatar 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

HEY!! The pledges have stalled. Please throw some moist pledge love our way. A mere $20 gets you in the running for the Wyatt disc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Carmichael:

Now we're talking!
Avatar 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

RIP Keith Emerson.
Avatar 1:29pm Mayuko:

Thanks Linda, just replied, please check you inbox! Thanks again <3
  1:31pm Dean:

This is nice.
Avatar 1:32pm V Priceless:

RIP Keith Emerson. Had the pleasure of jamming with him a few years ago - a very humble and funny guy...he did for keys/synths/Moog what Hendrix did for electric guitar, IMO...sad that he is gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Carmichael:

Emerson's death really hit me hard. Continues to.
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

Congratulations, and thank you so so much for your support!!!!

Keep the pledges coming in, people! HELP!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Carmichael:

Mayuko, I guess you don't get a microphone ...
Avatar 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

YAY!! Hope you enjoy it Mark! And thanks for pledging!!
  1:34pm Dean:

Bowie: I was never a die-hard fan, but his death was quite a blow. Emerson: I affirmatively disliked most ELP, but his death was a shock, too. He was an icon.
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

Avatar 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Mayuko is several time zones away from me, unfortunately.
Avatar 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 1:35pm Mayuko:

Do you mean to be on mic as co-host, Carmichael? I wish! That would've been fun. For me anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Carmichael:

Yeah Tony, I was thinking maybe you could have the FMU equivalent of a party line.
  1:37pm Dean:

My pleasure. We need to support this show!

Adding to the macabre mix, Anita Brookner and Peter Maxwell Davies died yesterday or Sunday. Brookner's novels are gems, and Davies's music is otherworldly.
Avatar 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

Wish Mayuko could be my in-the-room co-host! Would be much more fun. But ya takes what you can get.
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

I want that Chrome, but can't give it to myself! boo! people, don't miss this chance to win it! pledge $20 or more now!

I would love to have some $75 pledges! That gets you Tony's DJ Premium "Waka Wave" blogfiles.wfmu.org... & WFMU T-shirt & other cool swags! Don't forget to make sure your credit goes to Tony, here's graphic instruction: blogfiles.wfmu.org...
  2:01pm Dean:

Thank you, kimgland.
Avatar 2:01pm Mayuko:

DAVID! checking in from Sister Bay, WI!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR YOUR PLEDGE!
Avatar 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks so much for the pledge, Cecile! (Though if you pledged to this show, it didn't make its way here. Portland is awfully far away, after all.)
Avatar 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

I read that as Sister Ray, WI!
Avatar 2:03pm Cecile:

That is so weird, because I made a point of clicking on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Carmichael:

There have been many technical problems with the pledge machine.
Avatar 2:04pm Mayuko:

Ahhh I LOVE this song of Phew. She's the coolest Japanese lady ever!
Avatar 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Well, all pledges go to the station, so all is OK

Thanks so much for the thought, though!!
Avatar 2:05pm Mayuko:

oh no, Cecile, I am so sorry but we appreciate your pledge!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

Sister Ray, WI: Nice place to live, but a heroin problem like you wouldn't believe.
Avatar 2:06pm Mayuko:

I would also like to thank our own Kaminsky Kamoutsky for his support!! Thanks Jesse!
Avatar 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 2:08pm Cecile:

weighing in on Keith Emerson, I wasn't a huge fan, but such a tragedy.
Avatar 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Pledge for Janis Joplin singing Moondog!!!
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

... which is almost as unlikely as Whitney Houston singing Soft Machine. And yet, both things really happened.
Avatar 2:12pm Cecile:

Yes, sometimes real life will shock the hell out of you.
Avatar 2:12pm Mayuko:

that Moondog cover indeed surprised me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello Tony, Mayuko and every human!
Avatar 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Of course, the fact that Troyka (on just now) is a Russian-Canadian psych band is a bit unlikely too. And yet, that's what happens on FMU.
Avatar 2:14pm Mayuko:

We still have a couple of great prizes to give away - only takes $20 to enter the drawing and you have a pretty good chance of winning! Now is the time to pledge!!
Avatar 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

DOUG!! Greetings!
Avatar 2:14pm Mayuko:

Hallos, Doug!!
Avatar 2:15pm Mayuko:

Prize winners announcement time!!

The lucky pledger who won X-Ray Pop is...

Matthew! from Brooklyn, NY!!!

Congratulations Matthew, and thank you so so much for your support!!!!
Avatar 2:15pm Mayuko:

(winner"s"...? I meant a winner)
Avatar 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

At least you didn't say whiners.
Avatar 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

And I might have to start whining soon. C'mom, peeps, PLEDGE!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Doug Schulkind:

That sounded like a subdued version of Dick Shawn's LOVE POWER from "The Producers."
Avatar 2:20pm Mayuko:

Yes! please do consider pledging like right now.
Avatar 2:24pm Mayuko:

Don't miss this very good chance of winning Hot Club Murphy now! $20 or more pledge will enter you into the drawing!
Avatar 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

Only half an hour left! Please do get in a pledge if you like this show (or my Tape Hiss shows). Or pledge for Mayuko!!
Avatar 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

Even if you hate this show but happened to have accidentally turned it on .. . PLEASE PLEDGE!! The station and stream need your help!! I'll promise to stop playing that annoying song....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm listener james from westwood:

Welcome, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm listener james from westwood:

Do not doubt the power of hate-pledges. Believe me, the Five Minute Hate may be one election away. Get your practice rage-on now by pledging with great vengeance and furious anger to Tony's show!
Avatar 2:33pm Mayuko:

Even "that annoying song" is part of the musical treasures Tony has introduced us! Please pledge for the sake of music!
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

Up next after this Harrison track: Another cut from my premium. Yours for a pledge of $75!

Tony's got your Prog Rock backs, peoples! Show him some love..or hate! : )
Avatar 2:38pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar 2:38pm Mayuko:

I mean, speaking of Tape Hiss series, where else would you get a chance to immensely enjoy any of those obscure cassette tapes on radio? Not even on WFMU - only on this show! This show deserves huge support! Please show us some radio love!
Avatar 2:39pm Mayuko:

WOOHOO! and Jack, from Westfield, NJ!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU for your pledge!!!!
Avatar 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Doug Schulkind:

And I have to say, the fact that Tape Hiss shows are not archived makes them all the more special. You have to hear the show in real time, just like radio back in prehistoric times. Except with fewer wooly mammoths.
  2:43pm Jeremy:

Arg! For some reason my pledge was credited to Liz Berg, even though Tony's name was shown on the pull-down menu!
  2:43pm Jeremy:

Not that Liz doesn't deserve it but I wanted to show love for Tony...
Avatar 2:44pm Mayuko:

ahh, Jeremy, I am so sorry about that but it sure helps the station! Thank you so so much for your support!!
Avatar 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, thanks so much for the intention, Jeremy! Appreciate it!!!!
  2:45pm pacific standard simon:

For the webstream shows, you have to hit the plus button after the DJ's name. Email Joe McGasko if you want it changed. Don't feel bad, I did it last week.
Avatar 2:47pm Mayuko:

You need to hit the +plus button to get your pledge credited to Tony's show, here's graphic instruction: blogfiles.wfmu.org...
