A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:29am βrian:

Serge's name is musical, even. It could be an incantation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am sphere:

hello people. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Adrian in London:

I like a lusty laughing quack… Yes, the Gainsbourg film is very good. I like the way it doesn;t follow the regular boring biopic route

almost sounded like a whoopee cushion :)

Good morning! Borderline Francophile alert... Today MoMA begins their 90th birthday retro for Jerry Lewis, l'idiot americaine: http://www.moma.org/calendar/film/1621?locale=en

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Trouble:

o bonjour bill w. am i the only person that isn't a lover of jerry lewis? although he was outstanding in king of comedy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am sphere:

im not a Jerry Lewis type myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am annie:

Jerry lewis was good in the Nutty Professor because it involved a degree of real acting. yeah, he just didn't grab me for his acting. and KoComedy was good, too.. but i hate his (to me) degrading antics.
  10:00am kevlicki:

@trouble it's the simplest thing, conceptually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Guido from Cologne:

Hello Trouble and everyone!
Avatar 10:03am βrian:

Jerry Lewis and Mickey Rourke — both sensations in France. Mystère ...
  10:04am Bill W:

Wes Anderson fans should check out Lewis's cutaway sorority house set in THE LADIES MAN, which is a clear influence on the sub in LIFE AQUATIC (except W.A. really made no intrinsic use of his set)... I find his degrading antics very human.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Adrian in London:

Even if you don;t like Jerry Lewis as a performer, his autobiography, Dean and Me, is a heartbreaking love story.
  10:05am kevlicki:

@trouble you could tap the maples in your hood and boil at home!
Avatar 10:08am davidbaker99:

Hi there Trouble - great show, as ever... Listening to you at 3pm here in London, UK. What is the backing to your chat? The birds and explanations, etc - would love to get it. - thanks David

I used to live in Folkestone in Kent (next town over from Dover) and lived in a house on the cliffs that overlooked the English Channel. Ona clear day you could see France, and if the weather was playing up you could get french TV on the telly!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Adrian in London:

@Trouble Yes, it's a bit challenging in winter; most British seaside towns are. But I did live not far from Derek Jarman's house in Dungeness www.gardenvisit.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Ken From Hyde Park:

Sending an RIP to Goege Kennedy, from the Naked Gun and other fine movie delights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Trouble:

oooo adrian: that sounds outstanding. I have the book about that house and garden, would love to make the pilgrimage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am annie:

i visted england back in the mid-70s, took the eurail up to scotland.traveled to wales and land's end.. my mind has retained all those great images.. the cliffs at land's end blew me away, especially after a small-plane flight out and over the water. mind blown, definitely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Nate K.:

Cool Dr. John cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Adrian in London:

@Trouble I actually covered his funeral when I was a local journalist down there. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were there, Neil Tennant… I've got the order of service somewhere…

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Trouble:

glad to hear @ annie! merci!
@sugarwolf: you are the second person this week to mention mary beard. almost done with elena ferrante and the naples storie: next on to the new muriel barberry. finished my stopover sweater unless i want to steek it which i probably do
Avatar 11:32am Van in DC:

gotta love Jagjaguwar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Trouble:

merci sheila!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Adrian in London:

@Trouble How are you getting on with the Ferrantes? I gave up a third of the way through the first one; The Contessa read them all but thought the third so deathly boring but by that point sort of felt compelled to finish them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Trouble:

huh@adrian. i would say the story is making me want to know what happens, but i just don't enjoy the writing as much as the ideas. some books i read for the magic of the words and some for the story i suppose. some moments are outstanding and i have never read that spirit from anywhere else. other times i want to hit the characters over the head
  11:39am Billy London:

That Robin Gibb can sound a bit soppy.
  11:42am Kyle B.:

Trouble: I'm a bit late with this, but here's your Lil Bub info. The Joyful Noise compilation was made in conjunction with Lil Bub's owner, Mike Bridavsky. He's the owner of Russian Recording in nearby Bloomington, IN. Joyful Noise is based in Indianapolis. So no copyright issues at all, just a collaboration from the Great Middle West. So there's more than you wanted to know....
