Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm ChrisB.:

Game Theory's 1987 epic, Lolita Nation, was just reissued last Friday by Omnivore Recordings. If you don't have it, by all means pick up this one!
Avatar 3:45pm Cecile:

I was gonna post that! Thanks, Scott!
  3:46pm Lyle Flowers (4th Trombone - 1954):

Is that the Kenton band in the background? I can tell because of the presence of Conn trombones. Stan was a big proponent of Conn. They called him the Conn-Man, though he was not fond of this moniker and did all he could in his lifetime to dissuade others from using it. It's only now, years after his passing, that I feel free in re-invoking the Conn-Man's name again, knowing he cannot scold me, except from beyond in a dream or something.

Avatar 4:00pm slugluv1313:

ah! what Chris from DC said :)
  4:06pm Lyle:

Ah, Scott. Peter Duchin. I should have known, mostly from the "laid back" style he was famous for, and for his forays into the Carribean as an ambassador of big band music in its waning days. Hence, the forgotten classic, "Pass The Duchin" which can still occasionally be heard late-nights in some of the little tucked away watering holes in Charlotte Amalie or Montego Bay where the old-timers drink away the lonely hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Scott Williams:

Lyle, you need a radio show ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Mike East:

I think Duchin came into our studios a couple weeks back. He rents pianos from us fairly regularly.
Avatar 4:14pm TDK60:

Ah, this was when Crimson was on a mean streak.
  4:14pm Lyle:

All I know is this Duchin-talk has gotten me excited for the way things used to be. When music was music. When a trombone was a trombone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  4:23pm Lyle:

Remind me to tell you my Peter Duchin - Greg Lake story one day. How they very nearly cut some sides together, only to be interrupted by the frenzy surrounding the American Bi-Centennial! Too much!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Lou's Berlin! And look, it's a "VU Lite" arrangement!
Avatar 4:26pm DonJuanTijuana:

hmmm, I just heard this recently on a VU recording from Paris on the GoldStandard label..sounds identical...there is a killer track of Femme Fatale as well..with a cello-ist
Avatar 4:29pm DonJuanTijuana:

I think they open up with Waiting for the Man...Lou says something like this is about coping drugs in NY
...it's pretty funny
  4:33pm Santos L Halper:

@ChrisB: thanks for the GT tip; wonder why they are going out of sequence? Big Shot may be their best IMO
  4:36pm Lyle:

Seems Greg Lake was quite taken with Duchin's version of "A Summer Place," and thought that it needed only his churlish, weighty vocals to turn it into a monster international-level smash. Unfortunately, Duchin was called to appear on Good Morning America, the session was scrubbed, and both men went on to their respective careers and fates, never realizing what might have been something truly wonderful. I suppose it could still happen, but, as the years pass, it seems less and less likely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

Really liking this song...or should I say digging, that seems more appropriate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

OK, I get it. No one's interested. Carry on with your Bruno Myers and Arcade Farm then. I'll take my trombone elsewhere. Scott, I believe YOU understand and CARE about we older journeymen. These other young people? Busy staring at their razor phones.

  4:54pm Lyle:

I apologize. I got emotional. That old music means so much to me. All the stories. The times we had. Remind me to tell you about the time the Kenton band broke into the back of a Stuckey's in Tennessee one night in '71. Now THAT is a story. Love you all!

Thanks Scott ;-)

  5:06pm paula pc:

@ chris - there are some issues with Markos
Avatar 5:09pm Chris from DC:

Fair enough
  5:09pm Lyle:

Seems the Kenton boys were hungry. Late night on the bus after a show in Chattanooga. Someone spotted a Stuckey's just off the highway, but it was closed. Kenton was asleep in his luxury bunk, so Smitty (the drummer) and Hal Olson (4th Alto Sax) decided they'd just jimmy the back door of the place open, which they did. In five minutes, they returned with three pecan pies, a dump cake, and a gallon of pink bathroom soap (Cashmere Bouquet, if memory serves). everybody had some pie and cake, and literally washed their hands of the whole affair. Kenton never knew, but boy, if he had!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Matt from Springfield:

F'in gers!
  5:11pm Lyle:

Oh, shoot! Forgot to mention. Smitty left a twenty on the counter. We weren't thieves. We were a LOT of things, but not thieves.
  5:12pm Mark R.:

I just learned how to type "£." (Option3 on a Mac). So this show is educational as well as fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Nowadays "Improper Use of a Stuckey's" will get you on a registry for life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Cliff:

Good one Lyle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Matt from Springfield:

£ - on PCs, type the ASCII as Alt+0163.
  5:14pm Mark R.:

"Turn Your Back" sounds like something I might have heard in a Berlin disco in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Cliff:

I'm an American goddamnit, I never need to use that symbol for anything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Cliff:

(Though I might be moving to the Czech Republic this summer to teach ESL)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Cliff:

I don't know why the Czech Republic had to give themselves such a fancy-schmancy name in English. In other languages, it's called Czechia
  5:21pm Marcel M:

Well to be fair the only strike I got wasn't even during my turn!! Haaa
  5:21pm Lyle:

I've got a million of 'em, Cliff! Remind me sometime to tell you about the time Montovani threw up on Mamie Eisenhower right before Ike's inauguration address!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Cliff:

Slovakia just called themselves "Slovakia" when they split off from Chechoslovakia, they didn't feel the need to go with "The Slovak Prefecture" or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Technically Slovakia is called the "Slovak Republic", counterpoint to the Czech Republic--yet no one calls them that in casual convo.
  5:23pm Mark R.:

I like this piano piece a lot. A whole lot.
  5:24pm Marcel M:

Me too. Quite fitting for my commute home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Cliff:

Heh, I did not know that, Matt from Springfield
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Cliff:

I'm just a little irritated that I have to say "I'm moving to The Czech Republic" instead of just "I'm moving to Czechia"
Avatar 5:27pm Cecile:

just say Czechia, make it the new thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Cliff:

I'll try, but I'm only one man, I can't change an entire language overnight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Or even say you're moving to Bohemia. (Or, Moravia.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Cliff:

It'd be in Prague, so yeah, I could say I'm moving to Bohemia
  5:30pm Mark R.:

I agree, nobody knows where it is, anyway. I know like England (I call Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England "England"), Spain, France, Italy (that's the one that looks like a boot, right?) After that, I'm clueless. That's right, I don't even know where Germany is. Not exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Cliff:

Mark, don't EVER refer to Ireland as "England" to an Irishman (or lady).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Matt from Springfield:

WHOA - this is one of the BeeGeesiest vibes I've heard in a song, and it's only with Robin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robin G did some kewl stuff man.
  5:38pm Mark R.:

I know, Cliff--I'm talking about on a map I couldn't find it!
Avatar 5:39pm SheWolf:

and when in Ireland don't mention that you are going to school in England - even if they ask and even if you are. Just steer clear of the word entirely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Cliff:

Logging off early to take a walk outside before it gets too dark....good night folks! And thanks Scott!
  5:41pm Mark R.:

I kind of like this country version of "I've Been Lovin' You" in a weird way.
Avatar 5:42pm Cecile:

there are people who love how Patsy Cline sang "jazzy". I'm not a fan. This reminds me of her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: No love for any "countrypolitan" styles? I don't like them so much, but always liked Patsy.
  5:43pm Lyle:

Montovani (or, Monte, as we called him) was doing the eastern leg of a 40-date US tour , opening for the Kenton band. The crowds loved him. A little too much for Kenton's liking. He was jealous, but that's another story. Anyway, Monte liked his Sloe Gin, so after a show in Falls Church, VA, he was throwing a few down backstage when in walks Ike and Mamie Eisenhower! Seems Ike was a huge Kenton fan. Well, Monte was half in the bag, he lurched to his feet, extended a hand to Ike, and promptly threw up right on Mamie Eisenhower's gown! Turns out Ike was on his way to DC to rehearse his inauguration speech. The McGuire Sisters were on the road, so they were able to squeeze Mamie (no small feat) into one of their stage costumes. You can see it in old news footage. A sleeveless, red gown with toule, fur trim, the whole 9-yards. Ike was mad, but he didn't show it. Kenton kicked Monte off the tour that night. Ha! What days those were.
Avatar 5:44pm Cecile:

Not going to say "no love", but I have to take it cut by cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, didn't realize Montovani was such a gutterpunk, throwing up on respected First Ladies and all! :)

@Cecile: I could say the same, cut by cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Whatever style you would call this Soapkills - I'm LOVING it!
Avatar 5:49pm Cecile:

I think Lyle might be pulling our slide a little bit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm chris:

damn, Scott, what a show today! thanks, man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Scott Williams:

Thanks Chris! And thanks everyone for listening / hanging / playing along at home-work-Lyle's bus. See you next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ah, good. The next time Dave Hill is on, we can joke about the song "Stud" from the band Stud on the album Stud. (A reference to Angelwitch that starts his show.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Scott, a fun time as always!
Avatar 5:57pm Marcel M:

This Stud is pretty damn ill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ken HP: The "trifecta" list!
