Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05am ausmanx:

very lovely start to my favourite show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06am sashajones:

hello and thank youuu ausmanx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09am sashajones:

annie, that sounds like a super lovely combo - just poured more coffee for myself as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16am ausmanx:

i will plough through the bags of Chinese New Year candy my Cantonese translator friend has just left on the desk, and prepare my late evening black tea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23am annie:

i hear the year of the fire monkey is very dynamic.. .. and that there are 7(?) of each of the chinese symbols.. so.. 7 different years for monkey, each with a different name and influence... so that the years don't stop at 12 and go back through, they actually go a full cycle of 84 years? did i do that math right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26am ausmanx:

i'm assuming Fire Monkey refers to The Donald. the multiplication is good, Annie, though i'm puzzled that this is the first year we ignorant Westerners have paid much attention to the seven variants, we usually just note the twelve majors. another sign of our increasing dependence on the Chinese...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30am annie:

yes, i was thinking the same thing.. i have it on my list to keep better track.. perhaps that's why one year of the ram is not the previous year of the ram.it couln't be so set and fast. always some small vatiable.
maybe that's what i'll do while i wait for the bacon to cook
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37am annie:

hhmm. still looking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39am ausmanx:

what do we think about the idea of writing a PhD on Saturday Night Fever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am sashajones:

i'd take a chance on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am annie:

wow, aus, full of modern icons connected to older, more-traditional motifs.. cool.. i watched a movie last night "Cheyenne Summer" that held themes similar with more modern movies, most of which heavily borrowed for "Dances with Wolves".. and the road goes ever on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52am ausmanx:

i'm just looking the thesis over... completely fascinating, suggesting it's the crucial turning point in the relation between music and cinema (and it was never intended to be of any significance at all... Stigwood was obsessed with Grease and Sgt Pepper instead).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52am annie:

this is the concept i was thinking of for the various symbols.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53am sashajones:

That sounds amazing, who wrote it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53am annie:

is this your latest edit? i'd love to read it, i'm fascinated with folklore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55am annie:

in my rss news feed i got a great article describing older versions of some of our more "modern" folk stories. i posted it on my FB wall so i could find it.. brb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57am ausmanx:

our best music critic here, Clinton Walker (of "Buried Country" fame). i'm not doing an edit, just looking it over for him. but we are hoping to render it publishable in a year or two (if he finishes it!)... he has such a great archive of unpublished writing, i can almost believe there are unplumbed depths to Australian music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05am annie:

oh the knowledge that slips by us!! it's in our cells yet we seem to let them slip by in favor of our modern concerns. here is that link to the Atlantic article: www.theatlantic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am annie:

(sasha, i tagged you)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09am ausmanx:

of course, if we applied that principle to so-called "religious" texts, we'd see they're all much the same and some sanity might prevail...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13am sashajones:

thanks annie! look forward to reading later this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16am annie:

exactly, aus. yeah, sasha, my first real obsession was fairy tales and folklore.. and, to this day, i notice a subtle underlying thread running through all our discourses
  7:18am judy from croton:

  7:48am Cooh John:

Checking in on the great music on my day off. It could be paid by the snowflake here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am sashajones:

Hi, KP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51am sashajones:

Morning, Cooh John! I think we'll have a few of those here today too
  8:07am Cooh John:

Nice "Both Sides Now" cover.
Avatar 8:22am Wild Neil:

@Ausmanx-hi there! Good morning everybody! Ausmanx, can you cite a couple examples of movies that could not have existed without the influence of Saturday Night Live to break the ice so to speak, or does it not work that way?
Avatar 8:25am Wild Neil:

Saturday Night FEver I mean...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am ausmanx:

neil, i haven't read far into the thesis yet, but i think his point was that it was the first film to use the soundtrack that way (apparently stigwood actually took songs from the next Bee Gees album and put them in the film instead) as an integral part of marketing the film, a process which then became commonplace (of course the merger of film companies with music companies in the 70s was part of this, but i'm assuming you could even argue SNF accelerated that process too)
Avatar 8:30am Wild Neil:

@Ausmanx-thank you for that concise explanation. Got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am Ken From Hyde Park:

There's a two-hour delay for the schools here today. I get to relax a bit and listen to the show, so that works out well.
  8:36am david from radioactive ks:

,,wow zappa- like free form jazz goth,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am sashajones:

Morning, Wild Neil & Ken! Glad you have some time to take it slow, Ken.
Avatar 8:43am Wild Neil:

Niagara county, NY might get 2-4" that's it. Might use the snowblower just to say I used it.
Avatar 8:44am Wild Neil:

My understanding is that the east coast will get POUNDED but I may be wrong...
Avatar 8:50am Wild Neil:

@Room-dumb question, but is ANYBODY listening live over the radio right now? Just curious...
Avatar 8:56am Wild Neil:

Hey, could you play Bye Bye Blackbird? Heh!
Avatar 8:58am Wild Neil:

Thanks for playing King Crimson even though I missed it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am sashajones:
