"RKO 281" is a good cinematic adaption of the "Citizen Kane" story.

Dave's assertion is kind of true, but Hearst didn't single handedly destroy Orson Welles--Welles was very much an "auteur", an artiste who wanted to direct films his way. Often times they were too arty or took too long to make and weren't released often (9 years between "Third Man" and "A Touch of Evil"). Orson appeared in unwanted gigs to make money to finance his pet projects (FROZEN PEAS!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm

@Erma: "Step that Swinger"!

And, for the record, Hearst didn't kill Welles' career. He had the full support of the studio to make the follow-up, "The Magnificent Ambersons." Welles was the first to acknowledge he screwed up his own directing career. By various means.

LIVE IOWA CAUCUS UPDATE (D): Bernie Sanders' lead has stalled as the left-wing has started to vote for Angela Davis en masse instead. Says one caucus-goer: "Once we accepted voting for a Socialist, we thought why stop at an old white man? An old black feminist Socialist and Black Panther is even better."

True. Ozzy is goofy. And his variety of metal a bit too. That's part of his charm to me.

JakeGould:

@coelacanth: True, but I have been through—and seen stuff—in all levels of creativity where at the end of the day someone getting screwed is always a part of the process. I am not saying it’s good—it stinks—but to me, a first generation American (parents immigrants) it’s disillusioning to a degree that the American process still has this level of “screw or be screwed” mentality.

I remember seeing the '72 concert documentary "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones!" when it was theatrically simulcast in 2010.
The closing credits stated all songs as written by Jagger/Richards except "Bye Bye Johnny" by Chuck Berry. No credit, however, was given for the Robert Johnson song they played in that film.
  10:39pm
ian:

well, it's especially true in nyc where ppl get screwed. because in most places, creativity doesn't generate any income for anyone, so no screwing can occur. disillusioning, sure.
  10:41pm
JakeGould:

@ian: I grew up in NYC but not “connected” NYC so it’s interesting to me when I mention I was born here to some creative folks, the idea of “screwing” is implied or somehow I have connections that allow for screwing… Then they learn I’m just some guy and then… Ugggh. I could write a very long essay on Medium about that.

i see you,Jake; but there are different "levels",let's say. at the very least they could've called those >a dozen songs they stole "traditional- arr.by page/plant"; "trad.-arr.jaggar/richard".
...but some of the theft (not only "dazed & confused") was obviously from a known composer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

@Jake: Are these people from outside NYC? Unaware that most New Yorkers are regular schlubs who live unglamorous lives in the numerous neighborhoods, esp. in outer boroughs? Or do they think everyone there works beneath Beyoncé and can get them a shot at the big time?
  10:44pm
JakeGould:

@ian: Meaning I’ve had some people say things like “This is NYC, so that’s the way it works…” and it’s some schmoe who has lived here for maybe 3 years and just has… Bleagh… You don’t have to do what you don’t want to do and in a creative community you kill it when you play games like that. Anyway, bleagh…

@ian: I feel your pain. I miss the days of NYC when you could slack a bit. Talk to old school artists and they are not delusional about politics, but they are honest—and I agree—there were far more places to stretch your creative legs and just do things creatively for act of being creative. And I was a giant Police fan back in the day, and I've seen Sting live maybe 3-4 times and I KNOW he's totally corny but I don't mind. He is really good in concert. Kind of like Billy Joel - you know it's corny but you like it anyway.

So 13-year-old me is squeeing at this PG/Sting collaboration. I'll be with a couple of other super-fans who have also paid too much money for a stupid MSG show when we all prefer Mercury Lounge/Bowery Ballroom shows and we will enjoy the hell out of it.

I also like Scharpling's statement on how amazing Zep's "Houses of the Holy" album is--because of the separate "Houses of the Holy" song, released after.

It's the title track of the Houses album, but isn't on the album. It was released on a 2-LP "box set" a couple years later. And it's a GREAT song! And yet, there's no room for it on its title album, because as GOOD as it is, it's not even good enough for its own album! That's how good that album is! :D

I love Wish You Were Here and I love Meddle and I love Dark Side. I REALLY like Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking by RW. I missed the LZ convo, will have to go back tomorrow and revisit.

Fun convo, everybody! Have a great night!
