Top of the morning, Bob. Well, you just beat me to the punch. I was expecting/hoping for a tribute to the intrepid Paul Kantner. Thanks...

Thanks for the JA tunes.

Ah, yes, the mono version of Martha with the full glory of Jack Casady throughout (no stereo panning)!
  Sat. 1/30/16 9:16am 1whoknewcthulhu:

Missed you last weekend, Bob. Thanks for remembering PK and the Airplane this morning.
Avatar    Sat. 1/30/16 9:17am duke:

The Airplane is my favorite band from that era. There's always so much going on - multiple rhythms, great bass work, harmonies etc.

Airplane to Bernstein!
What a segue!
Swag For Life Member Sat. 1/30/16 9:20am WilliamfromDumont:

Great picks for Hoople and Kantner, Bob.
Avatar Sat. 1/30/16 9:21am statoj:

I always considered Airplane music as polyphonic baroque (multiple interlocking melody and rhythm lines.)
  Sat. 1/30/16 9:22am Debbie:

Oh, sweet music for a Saturday morning! Thanks, Bob. Love Leonard Bernstein.

Bob, you're the best!

Tuli did not like the absurd changes of his lyric to Morning, Morning--e.g. "puts me in my running place" instead "rotting place" so it is essential at all times to play the Fugs version sung so beautifully by Ed Sanders.
  Sat. 1/30/16 9:44am Stuart Rose:

To second everyone here, beautiful opening set.
The Airplane songs captured what is most enduring about their sound.
Trans-love airways- that's what Donovan called them.
Avatar Sat. 1/30/16 9:44am statoj:

Sunshine Co had such beautiful voices. When did bands stop singing beautifully? Even the big hair heavy metal of the 70s had melodious voices.
  Sat. 1/30/16 9:45am moe:

new york times reports that paul was 74... born in 1941... thanks for that killer Ohio... reading the Chrissie Hynde bio, she was there, not a politico just a stoner looking for kicks...
  Sat. 1/30/16 9:50am Don & Tracy:

Growing up in the Bay Area I would see Paul Kantner at music shows countless times. And just last October, on a visit home, I walked past Caffe Trieste in North Beach and there he was standing out front wearing a cool leather jacket being a part of the city he loved. RIP Paul.

That was a great Seals and Crofts story.
  Sat. 1/30/16 10:14am thelma blitz:

Correction: ED SANDERS sings Morning,Morning on the Fugs Second Album, not Tuli, although Tuli wrote it. Tuli's recording can be found on his 1989 solo album for Shimmy Disc "Tuli & Friends."
  Sat. 1/30/16 10:20am Stuart Rose:

Aborted comment of mine up there, Don.
Just wanted to say I appreciated your reminiscence of seeing Kantner in front of Trieste.
Great city. Let's hope tech money doesn't lay waste to the character of the city.

saw the Airplane do a free show in central park back in the 60's, Santana opened and then jorma and carlos faced off for the encore jam... the Airplane were the soundtrack of many a fun evening... they were one of the best...

I think Uncle Michael had that Beach Boys cut on his premium last year. Also learned on his show that while the family name is Staples, the group is singular...Staple Singers.

Great show this morning, Bob!

As for many, JA was part of the soundtrack for lots of early LSD voyages. I loved them and still do! Grew up in Toronto and will always remember a free Sunday afternoon concert they headlined in front of the city hall. This was summer 1967 and the next day they began a six night run at the O'Keefe Centre with The Grateful Dead, local favourites Luke and The Apostles and SF based Glenn McKay's Headlights light show. What fun! Descanse En Paz Paul Kantner.
