Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am listener james from westwood:

For a moment there, the stream was tellin' me it was 3 pm and time for UM to sign off!! A welcome blast of closers past!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

That's odd. Where did the stream say such misleading nonsense?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am listener james from westwood:

Ah, didn't realize you may not have heard it. At 8:47 it played "The Last Thing on My Mind" by Dolly and Porter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am doctorjazz:

Hi all, Drummer time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

OK, now I get it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Uncle Michael:

I have to go run an errand. Doug, if I don't make it my show, OK?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Hi docjazz! I'm ready for my earxamination!

No sweat, Uncle Michael!

Glad to see ya, ndbob!
  9:03am Mr C:

Doug...who played that funky vibes jam before Sarah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a sixpack of Old Milwaukee, on me, Mr C.

@Mr C
That was the group The Wooden Glass featuring Billy Wooten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Billy Wooten ~ vibes
William Roach ~ guitar
Emanuel Riggins ~ organ
Harold Cardwell ~ drums

G'day you ole record spinner.

Ten days and the Marathon kicks in. Any ideas on the grand total?

This is quality flamenco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Alex In Illinois:

Whoever is in charge of the webpage seriously hates Give The Drummer Radio. It is not possible to navigate to this playlist because the link is obscured by a the YouTube Video.
Avatar 9:12am glenn:

hopefully the canadian dollar will miraculously go back up to par in the nest ten days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

Gack! Ten days? Quit scaring me, Brian in UK. Marathon begins 6 March. The Drummer Stream is trying to raise enough cash to build a wall around Donnie Trump.

@Alex in Illinois
It is terribly confusing. If you click on GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO at left next to the big "play" arrow icon, the look to the upper left, you will see "PLAYLIST & COMMENTS" under the Listen Now header. That's how you access it. Sorry for the obfuscation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Alex In Illinois:

I had to Googe "WFMU Doug Schulkind Give The Drummer Some Playlist" in order to navigate here.
Avatar 9:15am Brian in UK:

The Harlequin Trio with silhouetted creatures. Nice.

@Alex right click the clips until you come to the floating girl.
Avatar 9:17am duke:

My schedule this semester means that I miss most of the GTDS live....Forward into the archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for efforting it, Alex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Alex In Illinois:

I tried what Doug described and nothing happens. What Brian in UK describes works. For some reason the Videos are set to obscure the links while the swimming floating girl allows them to appear in front of here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

You can audit my show any time, duke.
Avatar 9:19am Brian in UK:

Donald J Trump says no walls can stop me, I am digging a big enough hole to shovel all the kack that I generate.

I cannot get the playlist in top left on computer but can get it on a Nexus (other tablets are available)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
So the video does not appear to the righthand side of the screen with the new homepage? What browser are you using?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am doctorjazz:

Have the same issue with the Home Page (posted about it yesterday), though I did like the Tom Jones Beatles video. The link Doug described didn't work for me either. I get the GOTD email, use the link there to get to the show page, then I can use the Pop-up (work blocks my getting the stream in the other ways).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Alex In Illinois:

The Video does appear on the right hand side, but when one clicks the "Listen" menu, the menu links appear behind the video. I am using MS IE 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone having problems accessing the stream should either email a description of what's happening (not happening) to me or directly to Ken Freedman ( at the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Alex In Illinois:

Those links on the left side of the page don't really do anything.
Avatar 9:24am Brian in UK:

It is amazing to hear recently on the BBC seven o'clock news in the morning reports of the deaths of David Bowie and today Paul Kantner. Tear down the walls, Donald. What was once alternative is now.......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

When you click the links on the left side, does not the text change under LISTEN NOW?
Avatar 9:25am Brian in UK:

On second thoughts both acts recorded for RCA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

I am so sorry about the homepage redesign problems. I keep hearing new horrors. Please send me or Ken Freedman a description of what's not working for you. The station is conscientiously working to resolve the problems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Alex In Illinois:

The only thing under "Listen Now" is a line the starts with a list icon followed by the phrase "playlist & comments". Other than that, there is no text. An inch below that is a play icon of an encircled triangle with a dotted line that connects to phrases to the right of it. Clicking on the phrases to the right of the play icon causes the dotted line to connect to whichever phrase is clicked on, but nothing else happens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Alex In Illinois:

I did not let the lack of functionality of the left side of the page bother me, since the "Listen" menu provided sufficient functionality. But with the video obscuring the options on the "Listen" menu this morning, my path was blocked. But Brian in U.K. has found a workable work-around. I will send an email tonight. I will try some tests on my home PC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

If you are not on the Give the Drummer Radio email list, you should be. I send out email blasts in advance of every day of programming with links to to hear the stream and all playlists. Just send a request to
Avatar 9:36am Brian in UK:

@Alex just checked with a Nexus and under listen now it shows 'I Don't Have Time' as playing now. Nothing on my PC a Dell. Not Adele. Who I believe is lovely.
Avatar 9:40am Van in DC:

I finally figured out to hover mouse over the big "LISTEN" at top kind of center of page, then move the mouse cursor down to GTDR listing, then a pop out extra window shows to look at the schedule. Then I can click on this show.

Hi Doug!
Avatar 9:41am glenn:

i found that the playlist and comments link didn't work if i was using firefox. safari works fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

It's too bad Adele can be on a double bill with Archie Dell & the Drells.

Hey Van in DC! Thanks for figuring that out. I wonder if the "hover" technique will solve it for others?
Avatar 9:42am chromaphone:

The new site is cool, but I seem to find it more difficult to find certain things. Mornin'
Avatar 9:43am Van in DC:

That's a groovy cool graphic ya gots there today. Man plays a mean... clarinet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Hi glenn! Ho chromaphone!

Every PLEASE send descriptions of your WFMU homepage problems to Ken Freedman or to me (and I will forward them.

@Van in DC
Either a clarinet or some species of snake.
Avatar 9:46am ndbob:

I don't get the Adele bashing
Avatar 9:47am Van in DC:

ha ha I just noticed the dog. That's great.
Avatar 9:47am ndbob:

I just doa google search to get to the show page
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

Me neither, ndbob. Frankly, I am so tired of any bashing. People find it so much easier to define themselves by what they hate instead of by what they love. So tiresome. I BASH those people!
Avatar 9:48am Brian in UK:

@ndbob agree; she seems remarkably divaless.
Avatar 9:50am ndbob:

@Doug @Brian Yep as UM says there are no guilty pleasures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

But there are gluten-free pleasures, apparently.
Avatar 9:51am Brian in UK:

Doug I sooo disagree where is my Twatter account must tell the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am doctorjazz:

Nothing happens on the left side for me...tried to hover (can get in trouble that way), nada.
The email works fine, though.
Avatar 9:52am Brian in UK:

@doctorjazz try hoovering at least the house gets cleaned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Avoid J. Edgar Hoovering, however. That gets messy.
Avatar 9:54am Van in DC:

Try hovering over the "LISTEN" towards the center top...above the giant WFMU on the left...this line:

Avatar 9:54am Brian in UK:

Doug, hate to write this as bashing is soo much fun but this show is heading for greatness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

I always endeavor to head for heading for greatness.
  9:56am Mr C:

Was Wooden Glass on Cobblestone? The new home page has issues!
Avatar 9:57am Brian in UK:

Is this group title real?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
It is a very "Cobblestones" sound, but I have that LP on Interim. In a comment above (at 9:09) I list the musicians and album info.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
What, you've never donned exciting linens before? (Hint: They have mink... on the inside.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Which Boss tune is she semi-covering?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Also, very Bowie sounding this Togawa number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Uncle Michael:

I spent an hour running to get a new set of filters and a membrane for the reverse osmosis unit and the damned membrane has a bad o-ring. (No Challenger jokes). They're running a new one up to me. Good people...the set was $200 damned dollars.
Avatar 10:14am Van in DC:

I always wondered why that universal translator couldn't make us hear animals talk. What Spot the cat could have told us...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

The Wizard of Osmosis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Artie Haywire:

Some days you can just filter, others you've got to osmose.
Avatar 10:18am Van in DC:

bravo :)
Avatar 10:20am Brian in UK:

From The Searchers 'osmose knows' as he rocks back and forth in the chair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Artie Haywire:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Artie Haywire:

Anthony Brackish is not featured on this track.
Avatar 10:24am Flash Strap:

Good morning glories! Thanks for helping me wake up Doug
Avatar 10:24am chromaphone:

One of the biggest benefits from me finally getting a smart phone is that I now can listen to the radio with headphones at work and other places. Gives me a new appreciation of WFMU and of headphones.
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

I dunno, Flash. Doug seemed awake to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Don't thank me, Flash Strap, thank the Shibusashirazu Orchestra!

This FREESTYLE BAND record is limited to 1000 discs and can be ordered via 50 Miles of Elbow Room here:

This reissue was made possible by Adam Lore, proprietor, guru and janitor at 50 Miles of Elbow Room who provided a mint copy of the album for the new pressing. All hail Mr. Lore!

Zing, βrian! Zoom, holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

And hey there, Haywire!
Avatar 10:31am Brian in UK:

@Flash, like the J Arthur Rank gong picture. We used to see that at the pictures (movies) years ago before the film. It was mainly Billy Wells a former boxer but there were several others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Lane Gray:

I read that as 50 miles of Ebow Room. And I must get my two string Ebow fixed.
Avatar 10:33am Brian in UK:

Doug, second that comment about Mr Lore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

There is no one in the universe of music/love dispersion with a larger or purer heart than Adam Lore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

I Googled "Barbara Simmons" seeking more information. I do NOT think this is the same Barbara Simmons:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

...It's chicken pie and a bloody nose...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am doctorjazz:

That 50 has some really interesting stuff, cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Lane Gray:

Doug, in my last paying gig, I snuck in a classic jazz quote into a honky-tonk country standard, if you're familiar with Heart Over Mind
Avatar 10:42am Brian in UK:

Doug, could this be heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Adam Lore runs 50 Miles out of his tiny apartment. If he makes a penny distributing that music, he barely makes that penny.

Hello Mr. Lane Gray!

@Brian in UK
Can't watch until after the show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Lane Gray:

The chord progression perfectly supports Girl From Ipanema...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind: never will...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am listener james from westwood:

Dug the hell out of Jackie and Barbara back there.
Avatar 10:44am Flash Strap:

LOVE this Shepp track
Avatar 10:45am Flash Strap:

loved that McLean too, hadn't heard it in ages
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

D:O Radio played this track on their final Wednesday show. One of the greatest performances of human expression ever made. Ever made.
Avatar 10:48am βrian:

Je me sens tellement blasé...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Jeanne Lee. Jeanne Lee. Jeanne Lee. Jeanne Lee.
Avatar 10:49am Flash Strap:

Agreed. I remember being in the first rushes of discovering and obsessing over Archie Shepp, and picking up this record at some shop in Boston. When I got home and put it on, and this track started up, I was shot through with cold electricity, paralyzed. It transcends all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am listener james from westwood:

My Internet was shaky while working offsite Wed, so I was crushed not to be able to listen live; will def. hit the archive for D:O and Amanda. Well worth hearing again.
Avatar 10:50am βrian:

Doug, I loved Les Tambours du Bronx last week. But when I tried to find other stuff by them, it sounded, well, a little cheesy. Gotta keep looking, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Humility in the light of the creator Jeanne Lee.

I have only heard the one LP by Les Tambours that I played from. I don't want to know about cheesy!
Avatar 10:53am Flash Strap:

you played this incredible Jeanne Lee a few months back that I'd never heard-Don't Freeze Yourself To Death Over There In Those Mountains-and I found a copy and haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since
Avatar 10:53am northguineahills:

Man, I forgot to chime in. Been here for an hour, but the harmonica solo broke me from my trance.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Kim Sorise played this track on her Global Grease show last November. It should be played at least every two months on GTDR.
Avatar 10:54am Brian in UK:

Vacherin? Mmmmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Get back to your trance, northguineahills! We can still hold ear-hands.
  10:56am Dean:

Remember just yesterday we were commenting about apple pie with Max Roach and music classes with Archie Shepp? When Shepp played Yoshi's a few years back, he sang "Blasé." Two days ago a friend of mine reported Yusef Lateef had died. Uh, yeah, I replied, over two years ago. I know, because Doug delivered the tribute of all tributes.
Avatar 10:56am Flash Strap:

I just picked up a copy of Hush n Thunder, in part of a campaign to overcome my poverty of Yusef LPs... how do you feel about that one, sensei Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

I toss rose petals at your entering feet, Dean!

@Flash Strap
It is holy. It is holy. It is holy.
Avatar 10:58am Brian in UK:

@Dean He still is.
Avatar 10:58am Flash Strap:

  11:00am Dean:

@Brian in UK: It's a pity how that so often turns out to be the case.
Avatar 11:00am Brian in UK:

A StreamStone.
Avatar 11:00am Van in DC:

That's a whole new level of Give the Drummer Some there Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Parq:

Doug, funny you should mention it. Someone posted on my FB last night that Yuseff had died. I was off my game, so I bought it for a moment, and even thought about dropping you a line. It came back to me, fortunately. But this is how these post-dated RIP things get started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Alex In Illinois:

Tombstone? I was thinking that if the technology is available, we would upload your consciousness and all GDS archives into a solar-powered satellite-based server to stay in orbit for the rest of the life of our solar system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

The WFMU archives in perpetuity is kind of like a tombstone. I mean, gulp, one's music life lives for eternity via those archives.

Hello, Brother Parq! How strange that someone would alert you to Yusef's passing just now. I am here to tell you Yusef is still a/live.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

The final set of the show today (following one more track after this) will be devastating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for paying attention, Brian in UK!
  11:20am Dean:

Did you say Devo will comprise the final set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and Friday peeps. I love this guitar work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Props to you for using "comprise" correctly, Dean!

Shine and rise, Carmichael!
Avatar 11:26am Flash Strap:

the whole show's been pretty devastating, at least all of it I've heard. I'm sort of nervous for it to go to the next level. Will I weep? gnash my teeth? be driven mad with ecstasy? 'Cause I have to go look at some Hans Hoffman paintings later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am coelacanth:

howdy Doug and other drummers
  11:28am Dean:

@Flash Strap: I'm guessing the last set will drive you to use "comprise" incorrectly.

I have another H.H. for you: Hannah Hoch. What do you think of her collages?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Uncle Michael:

There will be a next room. We're meant to be the top of the hour.
Avatar 11:30am Flash Strap:

I already have a mild comprise problem, though admitting it is half the battle.

Love Hannah Hoch. Brilliant work. Very interesting how sidelined she was by her more famous (+abusive) husband, and the basic patriarchal attitudes of even the Surrealists. Of course, now she's much much more well known than he was. Such a visionary
Avatar 11:31am Brian in UK:

Is there a star the whole show button, 'cause I am a lazy so and so.
  11:33am Dean:

If it helps, OED is an enabler. Among the entries for "comprise": "to consist of." Still feels wrong to me.

Yes, she is better known following major exhibitions in relatively recent years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

I love you all, my huckleberry friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Easy way to remember it:

Big things comprise little things.
Avatar 11:35am Brian in UK:

@Flash ever got downwind of Egon Schiele?

Thanks Bob Boo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Carmichael:

I just started a bio on Bert Berns, and this artist (Billy Stewart) and song was specifically mentioned. Interesting story of R&B/Soul music of the 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

I want to make socks out of Billy Stewart and wear them for the rest of my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Doug - I had a phone call this morning, but here I am! This gif reminds me of me of course:(animating Jim Flora)
Avatar 11:39am Flash Strap:

@Brian: as a man who spent five years of his life studying nothing but drawing, and two more teaching it, it's safe to say I've sniffed more Schiele than a cocker spaniel sniffs box turtles. I love Schiele, and I love introducing students to him, and I love breaking them of their Schiele dependency, and I love EGON SCHIELE
Avatar 11:40am Brian in UK:

I reiterate my comment of 09:54. The train of greatness has pulled into Peerless Music station but no passengers are leaving it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

We're back to the "exciting linens" part of the show.

So glad you made it, Webhamster Henry. Sometimes you just gotta climb off that wheel-to-nowhere and relax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

I'll back next Friday with an all-new Schiele Dependancy show. Thanks everyone, good night!
Avatar 11:42am ndbob:

Avatar 11:44am Brian in UK:

@Flash well I was sated this last Summer when I went to Vienna. It was wonderful, there are no Schieles in the UK. His last works 1914-18 are stunning. That and seeing Otto Wagner's Steinhof church. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

Listening to Baby Huey makes me think of his version of A Change Is Gonna Come, which makes me think of Sam Cooke which makes me think of the show I did on Election Day 2008 in which I played nothing but versions of A Change Is Gonna to Come which makes me think of Barack Obama. I love my president.

I think I just read that Ron Carter was recently acknowledged as the most recorded bassist in history. He's on this Gil Scott-Heron record.
