Ahhh my weekend begins now! Howdy everyone
  3:03pm Adrian in London:

Coucou! Hello Sheila and Boomettes. We're at a Tindersticks in-store at Rough Trade in London so will catch up later. Bises!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

Sheila! This whole soundtrack has lots of gems on it, but this one is the brightest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm JtotheK:

good afternoon everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello sheila!
60iees UK group Episode 6 (featuring Ian Gillian and Roger Glover pre mark2 Deep Purple) made a gread live version of Simon & Garfunkle's "Hazy Shades"
Avatar 3:06pm Dr. Goot:

Greetings - The Bangles do a nice cover of "Tear Off Your Own Head" as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Afternoon, Sheila B and all!
Avatar 3:10pm djsheilab:

Hello friends! I have the weirdest story about that Bangles record. Will tell it during my first mic break.
Avatar 3:11pm Baumer!:

Looking this up on Apple Music, and I see the Backstreet Boys have a song of the same title "Show me the meaning of being lonely" is this a cover??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm listener james from westwood:

This Ternheim is quite lovely and hits hard today. But glad I heard it.
  3:12pm drew:

it is!
Avatar 3:14pm Baumer!:

Oh man, now I'm going to have to check the original out just because that cover was so good. First Gwen Stefani now Backstreet Boys, Sheila what are you doing to me?? haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Carmichael:

Hi Sheila, I have to head out for lunch. Don't play anything good till I get back!
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

@Baumer! Killing you with POP! The Backstreet Boys is very beautiful + emotional too. But the production is super slick of course.
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

@Carmichael Aye Aye captain! An hour of terrible tunes coming right up.
Avatar 3:17pm Baumer!:

Killing me and I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm listener james from westwood:

This show is making me better at guessing, "This is going to be a Japanese single" from hearing a bit of the instrumental intro. (First one I heard like that that I can think of was the track used in "Kill Bill Pt 1" by Meiko Kaji, also a previous-soundtrack cut like I suspect this one is.)
Avatar 3:24pm Baumer!:

I was going to go down to the beach for a little walk this morning, but I didn't get to it and now I am hesitant to go because of the time it would take between getting out of the garage and the stream buffering I might miss something amazing. All the gems on this show
Avatar 3:24pm djsheilab:

You having a rough day, @Listener James? Sorry to hear it. Hope things brighten up for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm listener james from westwood:

I've had better, bit that's why I'm here! Better than meds or booze!
Avatar 3:25pm slugluv1313:

WOW first time i am hearing this version by Nina Simone -- KILLER!!!!!
Avatar 3:28pm slugluv1313:

pulchritudinous rules!
i remember this from high school English class, where we had to learn a new word every day (or week? do not recall) and yup, pulchritudinous was one of 'em -- as we students got to submit new words too :)
  3:29pm Cooh John:

I love djsheilab and all boom boomers. Snowed in with WFMU: only way to go.
  3:29pm Eric:

well I'm glad the spirits told you to play that one, I hadn't thought of it in years either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm foofs:

Snowed in at a record library? What a fate!
Avatar 3:29pm Jesse K:

That Annie Philippe track!
Avatar 3:30pm βrian:

My wife taught me the word callipygian.

Avatar 3:33pm Baumer!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Greg from ZONE 5:

I was just typing that, Swan!
Avatar 3:34pm djsheilab:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm steveo:

1990! Time sure flies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Greg from ZONE 5:

So simple but so effective. Teenage me thought "Maybe one day I'LL make out with a cute girl on stage at a show…"
Avatar 3:36pm βrian:

"Heidi ho?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Hasn't happened, but I ain't dead yet!
  3:36pm MONEYBAG$:

Listened to this album recently, it had probably been 15 years since the last time
  3:37pm JakeGould:

Ahh! “Dirty Boots” reminds me of the old Disc-O-Rama that used to exist on the east side of Union Square. So many “promos” for sale. And show tickets. That whole strip is being vacated to make way for a “renovation” of the merger building into something more… Fancy… NYC memories.
Avatar 3:37pm Swan_Gone:

Want to crowd surf now!
Avatar 3:39pm Baumer!:

I want to be young and back in the 90s again now!
Avatar 3:39pm drewo:

Laurie and Lou were downtown's coolest couple. Then the title would have next gone to Kim and Thurston. But that ain't happening. Not sure which couple's next in line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...shee-it - when Alternative was actually some kind of alternative...
Avatar 3:45pm djsheilab:

The weather machine won't stop printing out snow blizzard warnings. Grrrrrrrrr! And it's so bloody loud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Gaylord Fields:

@drewo: Now that downtown couples David Bowie & Iman and Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen are out of the running, the throne is currently vacant.
Avatar 3:47pm drewo:

Cindy Sherman and David Byrne may be worthy candidates.
  3:50pm JakeGould:

@drewo: I don’t think Cindy Sherman and David Byrne are an item anymore. Just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm listener james from westwood:

Had not heard this Tiffany track in the day, but I recognized her voice! (My 2nd guess was Martika.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm maestroso:

Cool show as always djsheilab! Got to sign off for a while, it's drive time and radio time.
  3:51pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Why do you deny the power of snow? WHY! We will all be minority inconvenienced by mighty snow for a short period of time!
Avatar 3:53pm drewo:

Maybe the Steins - Chris and Debbie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm steveo:

Do Tiffany & Danny live downtown?
  3:55pm JakeGould:

@drewo: Chris Stein is not married to Debbie Harry. But they are still friends.

Also, I meant to say, “We will all be minorly inconvenienced…” Jesus the spellchecker.
Avatar 3:58pm drewo:

er, Karen O. and that filmmaker? But they probably live in LA.
  4:00pm JakeGould:

@drewo: Karen O and Barnaby Clay could be a thing. Or maybe Matthew Barney and whoever he’s boinking nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm JtotheK:

cool blossoms tune! i also like their "that's when the tears start" 45 on reprise.
Avatar 4:01pm jeff-m:

what no central Jersey forecast??!?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm JtotheK:

excellent weather reporting sheila! you come across as a seasoned meteorologist!!!
  4:06pm Joe McG:

Sheila B. Vs. the Weather Machine: Sheila wins! (Hi, Sheila!)
  4:08pm JakeGould:

@SheilaB: I just heard from another station that there might be “Thundersnow” in this storm. Gotta up the storm-fear-hype game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm JtotheK:

a simpsons reference "oh my god...DAMN YOU SNOW!!!!" would also be appreciated...
Avatar 4:09pm djsheilab:

Thank you @JtotheK + @Joe McG, but I think this machine is conquering me. I will beat it though! It's not over yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm listener james from westwood:

Ooohh, thundersnow, that's always creepy and amazing to hear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Carmichael:

OK, back and strapped in. And my next band will be called Thundersnow.
Avatar 4:11pm Baumer!:

Both versions are totally awesome. And I am picturing them as opening and ending credit sequences to a Sheila B vs the Weather Machine anime. They start as adversaries but by the end of the show they are the best of friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Ringo' = 'Apple' in Japanese ? (!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm JtotheK:

well, it's off to listen via the app for a while...toodles!
Avatar 4:12pm djsheilab:

@RR Rabbit That's right!
  4:13pm JakeGould:

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: You connecting the Beatles dots?
Avatar 4:13pm djsheilab:

Whoever is calling the studio, please stop! I can't handle all this technology!!!!
  4:13pm P-90:

Aloha Sheila and Sophistiboomers!
  4:15pm Dagwood:

Hey Sheila. Awesome track. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: It's always warm and sunny no matter the weather when you play Suzy Wallis/David Gates! Thank you!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Bend Sinister:

Suzy's 'Little Things Like That' is also fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Carmichael:

Not so Deep Purple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Guido from Cologne:

Did I say "Episode Six" somewhere in beginning of this playlist? Coincidence?
Avatar 4:22pm djsheilab:

Did you @Guido?!! If so, that's definitely a coincidence!
  4:22pm SeanG:

Deep Purple--best band name ever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Guido from Cologne:

I reffered to their live version of "Hazy Shades"
  4:23pm JakeGould:

@SeanG: What about “Black Sabbath?” Is there a list of bands with two word names that have a color mentioned in one of the words?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Harbinger Complex' was AGNFAB...I'm jealous of a few...'TheWh♂' might be the best ever to have dibs on...The cadence is important...'VelvetUnderground'...Meaningful Ambiguity is a goal...& by now try & make a band name not taken yet - hooboy...
  4:29pm JakeGould:

Velvet Purple Sabbath • Deep Golden Underground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Carmichael:

Yellow Magic. Blues Magoos. Shocking Pink.
  4:29pm JakeGould:

@Carmichael: There we go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

Jackson "Brown" ....

  4:33pm JakeGould:

Maybe there’s a WFMU adult coloring book that can come out of this?
Avatar 4:34pm Swan_Gone:

Oh my goodness! What an intro!
Avatar 4:34pm slugluv1313:

King Crimson
  4:35pm JakeGould:

This song is like a deliberate mind-fuck to dissuade teens from having sex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Carmichael:

King Crimson! slugluv for the win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Guido from Cologne:

That car crash sound effect librarry file was used elsewhere.

i have a German Girl Pop Schlager which uses it in the end.
The residents used it on "third Reich'n'Roll"
Other examples?

But the song is not so differen from the original 1958 version or is it?
Avatar 4:37pm slugluv1313:

Blue Haze, Blue Magic, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Oak Arkansas, The BlackByrds, Redbone . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Carmichael:

Unless, of course, there's a band that uses "mauve" in their name ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Guido from Cologne:

On my copy of the April Stevens debut LP the liner notes say she does not understand what is "sexy" about it ... hahaha
  4:38pm Joe McG:

@Guido: Nervous Norvus, definitely. I think it was even used on a late Blondie B-side, if I'm remembering correctly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

I became familiar with this Doris Troy song through the Hollies version.
  4:39pm Cooh John:

@JakeGould: an adult coloring book would be a great WFMU marathon premium.
Avatar 4:40pm slugluv1313:

aw thanks!
THIS i can remember but what is needed from the supermarket? nope!
and YES! a WFMU adult coloring book would be freakin awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Guido from Cologne:

Ah, the experts are present!
Joe, you should dedicate a hour of your show to that crash sound effect
  4:41pm Joe McG:

@Guido: I think maybe Todd or Spazz would do a better job, but I could try!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Carmichael:

Being Irish, I recognized the car crash as being at the end of a song by The Bucks. An instrumental medley called The Bucks Set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm listener james from westwood:

It's like the Wilhelm Scream of car crashes. They got a good one on tape and ran with it! (Plus who wants to wreck another car?)
Avatar 4:42pm djsheilab:

I dig this adult coloring book idea. Faye + Mayuko could illustrate!
  4:43pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Bingo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Guido from Cologne:

Uuuh Showaddywaddy ... that's my 70ies ...
... the opening chords to Bowie's "let's dance" never stoped to confuse me with this song ... that had too many plays on the radio back in the day ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Carmichael:

This sounds so Eurovisiony ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Bend Sinister:

the Rubettes charttopper
Avatar 4:48pm djsheilab:

@Carmichael It's a cover of the Rubettes from 1974.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Clay Pigeon should play "Lunatic Fringe" from Red Rider on his show. He finds random bands from the 80s like that.
  4:52pm JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: After like $20 worth of $10 records, Clay will find that one $8 gem! No hate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Guido from Cologne:

Eeek ... Rubettes ... not Showaddywaddy ...
  4:53pm Adrian in London:

Finally tuning in; on the train home sharing a set of earbuds. Tindersticks were great, if anyone's a fan
  4:53pm JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: Err, I meant, “$20 worth of $1 records…”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lady Day & all of her seven notes - my very favorite Singer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Carmichael:

I'm too old to remember any 80s bands.
Avatar 4:55pm djsheilab:

@Adrian you're just in time for my single of the week! If you don't already know it, I think you'll love it.
Avatar 4:56pm slugluv1313:

<3 Billie! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jake - $1 records, yes. It makes sense that way.
  5:01pm JakeGould:

Iridescent and bright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm listener james from westwood:

Could they have been going for iridescent?
  5:04pm thelma:

Mon Homme was first recorded in 1938 by Mistinguette:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFvYjlgqh4Q I am told that the French take this song as a joke while Billie Holiday's version , 1948, is regarded as serious pre- feminist masochism.
  5:07pm thelma:

Here's a version by Patchou for which I made French and English subtitles. You can see the original lyrics:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te9cc8jpPIo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm listener james from westwood:

Quite pretty, this one!
Avatar 5:10pm jeff-m:

yeah , the 'single' was really nice
Avatar 5:11pm djsheilab:

Thank you @Thelma!

  5:41pm wheatdog:

I'm really like your show I wish you would not talk so much you'd be able to play so much more good music .

  5:47pm SeanG:

today is jim jarmusch's birthday too
  5:47pm P-90:

Today's show was as good as any you've done so far, @Sheila B! Kadhja Bonet is indeed a rare find, she'll make a perfect inaugural live guest on SB-B. Thanks and have a great week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Guido from Cologne:

You handle the mike very well @Sheila!
don't believe what wheatdogs say
Avatar 5:48pm The Contessa:

@Thelma I used to work with someone who saw Mistinguett perform!
Avatar 5:48pm djsheilab:

Avatar 5:49pm The Contessa:

Yes! @Sheila We love you talking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Adrian in London:

Spooky, I think Trouble played a Yasmine Hamdan track this week; I looked her up having heard it.
  5:50pm SeanG:

i like you talking too
Avatar 5:50pm djsheilab:

@Adrian, It's odd because that soundtrack is in the new bin, but it's not new. Hmmm.....
Avatar 5:51pm drewo:

Sheila take a bow! Love the sets and the chatter.
  5:51pm JakeGould:

Thank you for this show, Sheila B. I hope we all survive this thundersnow and 2 days of inconvenience.
