![]() Hi, Therese. How are you feeling? It's been a heck of a week. Wow. This time of year, I like to hear a speech about dreams. www.americanrhetoric.com... |
![]() |
![]() hi Therese and everyone |
![]() |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:05am
Tome:
helooooo ,, mo mo better awight awigh yea , therese ! |
![]() |
![]() Hellloooo! |
![]() |
![]() Hiya! |
![]() |
![]() )o: |
![]() |
![]() Toots & the Maytals did not win the Powerball. |
![]() |
![]() You remind me of the corzetti |
![]() |
![]() heyyyyy everyone! and no, Toots didn't even pick enough numbers... |
![]() |
![]() Heavy Trash sounds like Hasil Adkins trying to imitate early Fleetwood Mac. |
![]() |
![]() 64-649 is your number. Hi Therese and everyone! MLK Day - how bout some Brian Eno-produced U2, huh!! |
![]() |
![]() Jerry Hall won the Powerballs™ with Rupert Murdoch, huh! (wakka wakka) |
![]() |
![]() Remind me to pick "32-20 built on a 45 frame". |
![]() |
![]() There should be an FMU lottery pool: anybody wins - goes to the Station. |
![]() |
![]() Each Marathon pledge gets a number - to me, I already feel like a winner! |
![]() |
![]() Hi Therese! |
![]() |
![]() play your listener number -- it's right there on your pledge bill |
![]() |
![]() ...except that - they're always a waste of money - cause some trash @ a lower latitude always wins... |
![]() |
![]() ME TRIVIA: I use the start times of songs on FMU playlists to pick my Powerball numbers. I've won four bucks a few times, but overall I'm in the red. |
![]() |
![]() I love this song! My parents had this CD and hearing the songs from it always reminds me of riding in the backseat as a child. My favorite was Closing Time. I made my mom play it over and over. |
![]() |
![]() L. Cohen! @BGZ: The problem might be playing start times on past playlists. The answer is prob right in front of you, on a playlist that airs *after* you play the lotto. |
![]() |
![]() 81 years young... |
![]() |
![]() normally some of the production on this era bugs me, but this one is ok to me, right now.. |
![]() |
![]() I like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' cover of "Tower Of Song." It's my favorite track from the Leonard Cohen tribute album "I'm Your Fan." |
![]() |
![]() one of my earliest memories with music was my mom's Cohen cd's, reading the lyrics to Suzanne |
![]() |
![]() "I'm Your FAN"! :) |
![]() |
![]() @Matt: I need to borrow Obama's time machine so I can view future FMU playlists. |
![]() |
![]() My ex left me her Leonard Cohen CDs -- win! |
![]() |
![]() @Alejandroool: Wow, quite the poetic start. I never heard of that song until I was 21. @BGZ: Just don't have so much fun w/ the future playlists that you forget to play the numbers to begin with! |
![]() |
![]() it was me. all 3 tickets were mine in fact. i bought sushi. |
![]() |
![]() If I won the lottery, I'd buy the station, then donate it back. |
![]() |
![]() Therese, by the way- you handled the unfolding of last week's show as a master. |
![]() |
![]() It's all your fault, Therese -- you killed him! |
![]() |
![]() Lots of Bowie at karaoke last night. I have been listening to his version of Brel's "My Death" a lot. |
![]() |
![]() Coming to terms...Bowie is gone, but Zoolander (2) lives on. (Wonder if he filmed a cameo for that! Oh well, we'll always have the "Runway Judge" from the 1st one! ;) |
![]() |
![]() a Bowie-less world will take some getting used to. |
![]() |
![]() There's been so many of these "coming to terms" in the musical life. |
![]() |
![]() @PSS: It's Obama's time machine's fault! It killed him during Therese's show - hours AFTER it killed him! You'd better watch that thing, next thing you know it'll go back to Benghazi a few years ago, mark my words!! |
![]() |
![]() @Matt: And his appearance on "Extras." |
![]() |
![]() Nightclubbing? Been listening to that all week. |
![]() |
![]() David Bowie is indeed on "The Passenger." |
![]() |
![]() OMFG! I got it! |
![]() |
![]() he played on the lust for life album, yes. |
![]() |
![]() SO glad Scott W. pulled that one out last Monday, I had forgotten I saw that on HBO years ago :) |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:32am
sugarwolf:
do you mean an amazing artist who shares a birthday with you?? Because yes, don't play that artist!!!
![]() |
![]() The only time I ever saw Bowie was when he played keyboards for Iggy on tour in '77. |
![]() |
![]() Yay Iggy Pop! |
![]() |
![]() oh! BGZ...i'm so slow. |
![]() |
![]() @coelcanth: Your post was a few seconds after mine. I bet you were on the "preview your comment" screen when my comment posted. |
![]() |
![]() great sounds on this one |
![]() |
![]() This song, on headphones, you can hear Iggy singing with himself. On "Funtime", you can hear Bowie singing. |
![]() |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:37am
Tome:
yeah ... :( |
![]() |
![]() Do the Oogie!!! |
![]() |
![]() Wow, this one is great, never heard "Slip Away" before.. |
![]() |
![]() Oh Bowie :( I found out after watching the Golden Globes, and they seemed so stupid and irrelevant after that. Then I woke up the next morning and remembered and had a horrible sinking feeling. I hate that there's a whole incredible generation of musicians who will all be gone sooner rather than later. |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:39am
sugarwolf:
It is so crazy and amazing that David Bowie wrote a song about Uncle Floyd.
![]() |
![]() Right?! |
![]() |
![]() I suppose everybody who cares about music has that one artist whose death will turn the world upside down. For a lot of people, it was Elvis. For me, it was Zappa. I sympathize with those of you for whom it was Bowie. |
![]() |
![]() For me it's going to be Brian Wilson. I'm going to be a goddamn wreck. I hope I haven't just jinxed him. |
![]() |
![]() well put, simon |
![]() |
![]() Uncle Floyd shout out! :D Bowie's liking of Uncle Floyd on TV was mentioned by someone here. |
![]() |
![]() for me it's a few dozen people, so far. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks PSS. |
![]() |
![]() hadn't heard that one either, great slinking verse on Slip Away |
![]() |
![]() @pss - Yeah, for me, it was Stevie Ray Vaughn. I was highly depressed for a month when he died. |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:42am
V Priceless:
Hey Therese. Thanx for the Bowie. I can't even begin to imagine what an emotional roller coaster last week's show must have been for you. Been a rough week, but just back from Woodmansey/Visconti gig here on LI. Fabulous and uplifting sonic celebration.
![]() |
![]() “Vivino (who is now 63 and still performs frequently in the Garden Stage) told me, in a 2002 interview for The Star-Ledger, that Bowie once told him John Lennon had introduced him to the show.” www.njarts.net... |
![]() |
![]() Cool cover! TV on the Radio's cover is great too. |
![]() |
![]() We can be "Heroes"! |
![]() |
![]() I bet there's a Marathon premium in a CD of covers of "Heroes"... |
![]() |
![]() Did Bruce Springsteen ever cover this? He should have. |
![]() |
![]() I bet there's enough covers of "Life On Mars" to fill a CD. |
![]() |
![]() Springsteen covered "Rebel Rebel" at a show in Pittsburgh this week. |
![]() |
![]() I always thought U2 could've covered this song - imagine my surprise when, years later, I discovered the Brian Eno producer connection between the bands (see comment above). |
![]() |
![]() GrrrrREAT choice for Bruce, Therese! |
![]() |
![]() Losing Brian Eno would be hard to take, too, but I have a feeling he's going to out-live me. Probably look like Gollum by then. |
![]() |
![]() How Ronsonian of you! W00t! |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:49am
V Priceless:
Great Ronson! Woo! | |
![]() |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:49am
egal:
Madonna covered Rebel Rebel last week as well. |
![]() |
![]() @ Therese - Really?! Somehow, I think of them as complimentary artists. |
![]() |
![]() I misread "Gollum" as "Goldblum" and was trying to imagine Brian Eno looking like Jeff Goldblum. |
![]() |
![]() @BGZ: As a kid I didn't quite "get" Jeff Goldblum - but now I like him! He is an acquired taste, indeed. |
![]() |
![]() He's like Christopher Walken Lite. |
![]() |
![]() And Madonna wouldn't have the same career without Bowie's influence. |
![]() |
![]() OH! :D |
![]() |
![]() My favourite Goldblum role is in (Crononberg's) The Fly |
![]() |
![]() @PSS: If we were to get into all the major and minor influences of Bowie on subsequent artists, how very many would not be around today or have a very different aesthetic.. |
![]() |
![]() Cronenberg* eesh |
![]() |
![]() Always liked Jeff Goldblum -- he just keeps getting better. His cameos on The Colbert Report, ha! |
![]() |
![]() Peter Noone even covered this song: "Noone replaced Bowie's line "The Earth is a bitch" with "The Earth is a beast", in a performance that NME editors Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray called "one of rock and roll's most outstanding examples of a singer failing to achieve any degree of empathy whatsoever with the mood and content of a lyric." " ;D |
![]() |
Mon. 1/18/16 12:55am
Tome:
existenz |
![]() |
![]() Heh, those are great PSS! |
![]() |
![]() I heard a story about when Peter Weller was offered the role in "Naked Lunch" he asked Goldblum about his experience working with Cronenberg. Goldblum told him to be prepared to get some of the weirdest fan mail ever. I don't know if that story is true. But I want it to be. |
![]() |
![]() yeh it's likely Eno's departure will hit me harder than anyone's - ever...with the exception of David S.Ware; and maybe George Harrison. |
![]() |
![]() "Uncle Floyd" was syndicated to some extent in the early 80s. It aired on a UHF station in Dallas. |
![]() |
![]() I keep imagining John Waters watching "Cooking With Nancy Grace". I'm sure he does. www.hlntv.com... |
![]() |
![]() Kirstie Alley's character from "Star Trek II?" |
![]() |
![]() Oh wait...that was Saavik. |
![]() |
![]() Don Nix should be in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame just for "Going Down" alone. |
![]() |
![]() Evan did an excellent David Bowie tribute which is not listed on the fmu home page: wfmu.org... |
![]() |
![]() JAWS! Later featured in "Happy Gilmore", wearing a T-shirt with the first time I saw the phrase "Guns don't kill people, *I* kill people!" |
![]() |
![]() Ah, Explorers Room! That DJ does amazing theme episodes. Thanks for the rec, coela. |
![]() |
![]() "Mr. Richard Kiel" is alright if you like saxophones. |
![]() |
![]() Death kills people, guns just make it 551 times more likely. |
![]() |
![]() Jaws- one of the only Bond villains with a character arc. |
![]() |
![]() Blofeld is the one. BTW, Tim Curry will be returning to The Rocky Horror Show. Not in fishnets, I'm happy to report. In the Charles Grey role. |
![]() |
![]() @Therese: I loved when he had a girlfriend in Moonraker. |
![]() |
![]() Er, Charles Gray. |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, but Blofeld never fell in love in SPACE! |
![]() |
![]() There's talk of an upcoming Pee-wee Herman movie. |
![]() |
![]() I believe this is the first time that "Moonraker" has been mentioned on the playlist in back-to-back weeks. I think this a sixth-sign-of-the-apocalypse situation. |
![]() |
![]() @Ken HP: Yeah, but it's probably going to be a dark, anti-hero epic directed by Christopher Nolan... Seriously though, Tim Burton was ideal to do it the first time, I hope he directs it again. |
![]() |
![]() BUT, Blofeld had a clone, or an identical twin! They probably had teh secks together! |
![]() |
![]() @Ken: It's debuting on Netflix in March. |
![]() |
![]() At the very least, HuffPo is going to come out tomorrow with some kind of "Moonraker's Surprising Comeback!" malarkey because of this. |
![]() |
![]() What if Pee Wee Herman had portrayed Austin Powers? |
![]() |
![]() @BadGuyZero - Then I would have gone to see those movies. |
![]() |
![]() "If you think she's so sexy why don't you MARRY her? Yeah baby! BREAK dance!!..." |
![]() |
![]() Pee-Wee would never wear a chest wig. Sorry. |
![]() |
![]() Doctor Evil's secret lair is in the basement of the Alamo. |
![]() |
![]() @BGZ ;D When you "won" Meghan's theme episode and she played "Texas" songs, I was thrilled she played the original version of the song that everyone in San Antonio sings on demand. |
![]() |
![]() Ah, Alvino Ray & His Orchestra, "Deep in the Heart of Texas": wfmu.org... |
![]() |
![]() That song is kind of a big deal down here. |
![]() |
![]() What, it wasn't "Across The Alley From The Alamo"? www.youtube.com... |
Mon. 1/18/16 1:31am
V Priceless:
what fish said at 1:06, add Diane Kamikaze and Todd-o to the list too! Yay! Diane's 25 minute loop of "Chant of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family'at the end of the entire 'Diamond Dogs' was especially lovely.
Mon. 1/18/16 1:34am
KP:
Hello from the great southwest, Therese
![]() |
![]() I believe Mark R. requested that 25-minute loop last Monday morning -- he was quite unhappy about the shortness of the original. |
![]() |
![]() Deep in the Heart of...somewhere! Hi there KP. |
![]() |
![]() Give me the yellow rose any day. |
![]() |
![]() I wonder if there was ever a vinyl release of "Diamond Dogs" that had a locked groove at the end of side two. |
![]() |
![]() You would think, BadGuyZero, but I never heard of it. |
Mon. 1/18/16 1:37am
V Priceless:
@ pacific: that's funny. Bill Mac was saying the same thing this week!
![]() |
![]() Hmm, maybe it was Bill Mac... |
![]() |
![]() Yes, you're right. The tributes have blurred together in my memory. |
![]() |
![]() I'm looking on Discogs to see if there's a note about one on any of the numerous versions of "Diamond Dogs." |
Mon. 1/18/16 1:44am
P-90:
OK, more than halfway through the show and no "Holy Crap" momemt. Yet.
![]() |
![]() I looked at every 1970s vinyl version of "Diamond Dogs." None of the Discogs entries mention a locked groove. Missed opportunity there. |
![]() |
![]() Nothing at the Wikipedia section for locked grooves, either. Agree. |
![]() |
![]() Holy crap! There are (as I type this) two people born in 1899 and are still living! I hope this doesn't jinx them. |
Mon. 1/18/16 1:52am
rw:
pss and BGZ, you guys should get together and make a bootleg with the locked groove.
![]() |
![]() Therese this set Rules! |
![]() |
![]() ...and the last set also Ruled!! |
![]() |
![]() I've been hoping for the option to Star 'sets' within shows, not just songs or shows as a whole! |
![]() |
![]() i want to turn it WAY up, but it's almost the witching hour. |
![]() |
![]() We'll do a thing on Instructables about how to create a locked groove on "Diamond Dogs" using a razor blade. |
![]() |
![]() If it isn't on this LP: store.wfmustore.org... then it ain't worth having, |
![]() |
![]() Self-locking grooves!!! We're doomed! |
![]() |
![]() That locked groove is the seventh sign of the apocalypse! |
![]() |
![]() Matt, i've always thought the same thing. ...but i guess it could conceivably insult some djs, right? |
![]() |
![]() And to top it off, IBM's Watson is now in commercials - a short step to full-on Skynet. "Watson" isn't an anagram of Skynet, BUT it IS an anagram of "Sawnot". Too close for comfort. On Jeopardy Watson's main weakness was puns, little contexts it couldn't grasp. So let's switch to a pun-based economy now, in preparation! |
![]() |
![]() Some of the first pressings of Slayer's "Reign In Blood" have a locked groove at the end of side two. The falling rain sound goes on forever. |
![]() |
![]() @BadGuyZero: Sounds like a thing for “Destructables!” |
![]() |
![]() happy anniversary. |
![]() |
![]() @coela: It would be nice if each show host could decide whether to turn it on or not. Just to praise particularly well-crafted sets. |
![]() |
![]() I would "star" sets just as rarely as I "star" whole shows. |
![]() |
![]() I starred a few things when that feature was first added. Then I proceeded to forget all about it. |
![]() |
![]() I starred Mary Wing’s (with Julie) show last night. 3 hours of covers! |
![]() |
![]() yes. it's for the wiser dj who knows 1)the set gets a star IN RELATION TO other sets in the program, and 2) that no one can ever be anyone's everything! |
![]() |
![]() I "star" programs to give a general indication of what kind of music I prefer, and "star" songs to remind myself of things to investigate in the future. Rarely, I "star'" a particular show that blows me away. You know. |
Mon. 1/18/16 2:09am
victorwooten:
Great show as always | |
![]() |
![]() i star things strictly for my own reference. i quite doubt that anyone else ever looks at them. ...if i thought so i'd star things with completely different guidelines. (i.e. i never star songs that i own a copy of.) |
![]() |
![]() @Therese - I thought this Speed the Plough song was The Monkees' "As We Go Along", at first. Excellent foolery! |
![]() |
![]() i star lots of episodes. if i particularly enjoyed it, why let it remain stored, unloved, during those times (the minority though they are) when live wfmu is not for me? |
![]() |
![]() I starred my favorite FMU programs. I was starring songs I liked so that I could look into buying the record later instead of having dozens of tabs open in my web browser during a show. But I'm a bit of a creature of habit. I quit starring songs because I still looked for them during a show. |
![]() |
![]() @coelacanth - I frequently look at the profile pages of other WFMU fans. |
![]() |
![]() simon, i do as well, but not usually the favorites lists. |

I finally hooked up an antennae to my stereo. I'm staying tuned in

![]() ME TRIVIA: If I hear whistling in a song I try to whistle along even though a. I can barely whistle b. I probably have never heard the song that has the whistling |
Mon. 1/18/16 2:22am
Ice in Brooklyn:
I star songs for me | |
![]() |
![]() @Ice in Brooklyn - make the dipole antenna! |
![]() |
![]() Ice, since i got my antenna fixed i have it rigged as i have since the 90s...my light switch upon entering my apartment turns on wfmu. |
![]() |
![]() ...and hi! |
![]() |
![]() If being able to barely whistle were a mutant power I would be king of the X-Men. |
![]() |
![]() "Our hypnotizing whistle isn't working! One of those Mutants must be jamming it! Man, is that sound jarring!" |
![]() |
![]() when people cannot whistle it's because that power is being diverted. it's up to you to find your superpower. |
![]() |
![]() I cannot whistle; it's because I have British teeth. |
![]() |
![]() hahaha! |
![]() |
![]() i'm not sure that's a superpower. |
![]() |
![]() thx for that Lily Chao, Therese, lovely recording |

coelacanth, what if you want to listen to the radio in the dark?

![]() My superpower is a capacity for alcohol. I kid you not. |
Mon. 1/18/16 2:31am
rw:
Dang. I want a superpower.
![]() |
![]() I'm a superconductor of alcohol - I put out more into my blood than I take in! Super-Drunk! |
![]() |
![]() Keep on liftin', rw |
![]() |
![]() Oooh! It's like Mickie Most on the other side of the Channel! |
![]() |
![]() I wonder if there is a superintendent out there who was once a train conductor who says, “Hey! I’m a superconductor!” |
![]() |
![]() rw, the light has a switch on it. the wall switch controls an electrical outlet that both the light and the receiver are plugged into. |
![]() |
![]() I bet Matt Berry is touching himself while he's singing this. |
![]() |
![]() i unintentionally but willingly cut way back on my alcohol intake - gradually, starting about 2 years ago. my tolerance has plummeted. it sucks. i drink 3 beers and feel like crap for a day. ...3 years ago i could drink 12 strong whiskey drinks and people couldn't even tell i was drunk. |
Mon. 1/18/16 2:41am
rw:
Oh, I have a VCR that works that way, but only because I ran out of outlets.
![]() |
![]() @BGZ: Tangential, but I managed to get my hands on that de-specialized, HD version of “Star Wars” (the original) and it’s pretty great. Truly a wonderful the fan community did there. |
![]() |
![]() Sweet, eclectic sounds this set! |
![]() |
![]() rw i have a small apartment, but i've rigged the electricity pretty well. practically everything is on power strips and i turn everything off when i leave except the refrigerator. i use dimmers too, for ambiance but more to preserve light bulbs. |
![]() |
![]() When I was a kid, I drank three or four beers and had to throw up. Nowadays, it's like sodapop. The evolution of the aged body, I guess. |
![]() |
![]() I used to drink A LOT. Then a few years ago I had a medical emergency and it was recommended that I drastically reduce my alcohol intake. Which I did. After my gallbladder was removed last year I pretty much had to quit drinking. I have a beer/cocktail or two once in a while. Now I drink club soda when I'm in social situations that involve booze consumption. |
![]() |
![]() @JakeGould: Yay! Those are the best thing to have until Disney gets around to officially releasing the original versions on blu ray. |
![]() |
![]() @BGZ - tonic and lime is good, too. |
![]() |
![]() Kirsty! Always a winner, Always, Remembered... |
![]() |
![]() @BGZ: Well, I have the 1977 original. I have an LD transfer of “The Empire Strikes Back.” But as someone who grew up with the films, “The Force Awakens” solidified my feelings towards “Return of the Jedi”: I don’t like it. So I ditched that flick. I only believe in the original “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” |
![]() |
![]() Yeah. I hope the bastard who killed her gets his just deserts. |
![]() |
![]() I saw “Return of the Jedi” twice in 2 weeks: Once with my freak friends… Another with my geek friends… I hated it then. I hate it now. |
