Klaus is more "kraft" than "werk", maybe?

Lovely to sit listening in as it rains outside in northern CA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

I want to get the Tariverdiev collection. It was featured on Morricone Island a while back, really good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Andrew Waterloo:

really enjoying this Oranj Symphonette
Avatar 10:41pm JakeGould:

@DaveMandl: It’s going.
  10:41pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Dave. A great show, as always. This version of "The Magnificent 7" is delightful. If I wasn't getting ready for bed, I'd dance around the house to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm pacific standard simon:

Dave, have you heard the Cafe Accordion Orchestra? They have a CD, Cinema, that is all stuff like this.
Avatar 10:42pm HollyT:

Huh. I don't think I knew the was originally the theme from the Magnificent Seven! In the 70s, I'm pretty sure the main riff was used as the opener for the Sunday Night Movie, or something along those lines? Anyone here remember?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

mmm.. Matt Brubeck plays for Oranj Symphonette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - It was also the Marlboro cigarette theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

For those of us who are old enough to remember ciggy ads on TV.
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth:

interesting that would be the new york way...it's closer to "proper english" than "Huge",w/a hard h.
  10:46pm rw:

So is there a cap as to how many songs on a CD? Seems the players only go to 100.
  10:46pm rw:

I mean 99
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Oh my, too many comments to catch up on. Thanks.
Avatar 10:48pm HollyT:

I was born in 68, so I'm thinking this must've been around the mid-to-late 70s. Were they still running ciggy ads on TV then?
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Yes, it was the Marlboro commercial.
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Maybe early '70s? I think they killed cigarette ads in '71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm pacific standard simon:

No, IIRC, the ad ban was early '71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Rw, I've had CDs that went to track 104. There was different editions to the Redbook standard and your CD may have or may not have played depending on the type of enhanced CD, if the tracks started at 1 or not, or if the tracks went beyond 99.
Avatar 10:49pm HollyT:

Weird! They must've adopted the theme for something else as well, then. Or I watched The Magnificent 7 many times without realizing it. :)
Avatar 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

Belated welcome: Andrew, pss, rw, Wendy, Eric, I X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm pacific standard simon:

@HollyT - It's quite possible that The Magnificent Seven theme wormed its way into your ear via Muzak, too.
  10:54pm rw:

thx AW! reminds me of the Y2K fiasco.
Avatar 10:55pm HollyT:

Pss: extremely likely :)
Avatar 10:56pm coelacanth:

rw, the redbook standard aside; i'm pretty sure you can put hundreds of tracks on a cd- but probably no players will count them all. ...they'll play, but the readout will turn blank after a certain number. (usually 20 for a cd"changer")
Avatar 10:58pm coelacanth:

...and you can definitely put 79 minutes and 57 seconds on a cd - if the burner/program will do it.
  10:58pm rw:

Winston tastes good like a cigarette should. That one's stuck in my brain 'til I die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...okay - TV off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm pacific standard simon:

"You can take Salem out of the country, BUT... you can't take the country out of Salem." Whatever the hell THAT means.
Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Lonely Planet Boy:

"come up, to the Kool taste, come up, to Kool", sung by a New Design sounding vocal ensemble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Philthy woman:

Enjoying this show very much. Especially the Alfred 23 Harth and Jon Bell, I would not have thunk that a new song if you had not announced it. Thanks Dave Mandl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm joeray:

"You've come a long way, baby!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm just old enuff to remember being happily spooked by Johnny Smoke :
- which was an anti-smoking PSA - so I'm...younger...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm pacific standard simon:

@joeray - I knew that one would turn up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm joeray:

@pss: how about "Step up to finer smoking pleasure"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the Winston one echoes way back my brain...how late did TV cigarette ads run? Into the 70s?
Avatar 11:05pm HollyT:

Yeah, my mom had (and still does) EVERY issue of Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day and Family Circle dating back to the mid-60s so I saw that Virgina Slims ad A LOT.
Avatar 11:05pm HollyT:

Revolution Rabbit: discussed earlier in thread. '71, per the oldsters. :))
Avatar 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

@Philthy: Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx. Wigkey: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm pacific standard simon:

@joeray - You got me stumped there.
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth:

nobody mentioned teritown (sp?)..."territown smokers would rather fight than switch."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm pacific standard simon:

Tarryton, I think.
Avatar 11:11pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember this PSA: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm pacific standard simon:

Ah, you're right.
Avatar 11:12pm HollyT:

Damn, Tareyton!! That is some old-school shizz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm joeray:

@pss: Dutch Master's cigars, used in many TV commercials by Ernie Kovacs who never smoked them!
Avatar 11:14pm coelacanth:

ha! well, none of the beach boys knew how to surf either.
  11:14pm Clay Pigeon:

Taste me, taste me! That's all Doral asks .... and ... Show us your Lark pack!
Avatar 11:15pm HollyT:

I first smoked Benson & Hedges, then More, then Marlboro, then American Spirits, then Marlboro again, then quit. (Along with the occasional clove ciggie in the parking lot of the club with the other New Ro and goth suburban freaks, c. 84-85)
Avatar 11:16pm HollyT:

Great choice, D.
Avatar 11:16pm coelacanth:

ah,benson & hedges 100's....no words, just that pleasant music and people constantly bending the ends of their looong cigarettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm joeray:

Smokin' show tonight, Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Taste me taste me!'...oh - it's weird to watch the 20thCentury recede - I mean, just disappear...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Tome:

good one ... hey Dave hey kiddles ,,
  11:18pm Eric Hat:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm pacific standard simon:

I was always a filterless smoker. Gah, what a habit! 12 1/2 years free.
Avatar 11:19pm coelacanth:

i smoke only marlboro. reds or mediums.
...but i only smoke between 1 and 11 ciggies/year.
(1 in 2015; 2-3 in 2014)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm pacific standard simon:

I've been hoping to hear "London Boys" since last Sunday, but haven't the patience to wade through all the tributes to see if someone played it.
Avatar 11:20pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & 'Cygnet Committee' & 'Savior Machine' - but yerknow it's all YouToobz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's also good to frankly get schooled in later Bowie I'm not perfectly fluent in yet...
Avatar 11:24pm HollyT:

I vape now. I don't care if people think it looks dumb.
Avatar 11:25pm Polyus:

Whoa, inspired choice of a DP song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Ĩkє:

I certainly hope this fellow knows this Mary Long pretty well, because if he doesn't, asking her, "How did you lose your virginity?" is pretty rude, isn't it? I mean, gosh, that's a very forward question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm pacific standard simon:

TIL: You can buy a motion-sensing night light for your toilet bowl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Andrew Waterloo:

Bowie was never afraid to make an album of uncool music.
Avatar 11:28pm Dave Mandl:

Mary Long = Mary Whitehouse, famous anti-smut campaigner in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm joeray:

Therese started her show last week with a Bowie birthday tribute and by 2:00am when the news of his death was announced, she presented an impromptu Bowie memorial set for the last hour of her show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Ike:

OH! That casts the whole thing in an entirely different light. We classic Doctor Who fans versed in the history of British TV in the 70s know Mary Whitehouse well. She effectively forced out of the best producers of Doctor Who circa 1978, turning the show from largely gothic horror into largely sophomoric comedy-tinged goofiness for a time.
Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Lonely Planet Boy:

never knew the backstory for Mary Long. Thanks, Dave!
  11:32pm Carmichael:

I am proudly pro smut.
Avatar 11:32pm Dave Mandl:

Actually Mary Long = Mary Whitehouse + Lord Longford, another anti-smut campaigner.
Avatar 11:33pm Dave Mandl:

@joeray: I know, incredible.
Avatar 11:34pm Dave Mandl:

But Mary Whitehouse was much more active. Pink Floyd also attacked her on "Animals."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm pacific standard simon:

Arse longa, vita brevis. ;)
  11:38pm Carmichael:

She was the British Anita Bryant?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

"Melt Down Boogie" is a very cool title. "Onanie", BTW, is anglicized Japanese for playing with yourself.
Avatar 11:42pm Dave Mandl:

Yeah, Anita Bryant might be the American equivalent.
  11:43pm Carmichael:

I saw Deep Purple 2 years ago. Still stunning. Steve Morse did a fine job filling in for Blackmore.
Avatar 11:45pm Polyus:

Dave, have you heard this cover of Mary Long by Atomic Forest? (rock band from India circa late 70s)youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

Tipper Gore would be the 80s version. When anti-smut gave up and became parental concern trolling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Anita was more focused on teh Gays.
  11:46pm rw:

pss, As in onanism?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

@rw - yes. "Onani" is a Japanese loan-word from "Onanism".
  11:48pm rw:

I'm thinking of that Flipper song, Sex Bomb. Maybe Onanie Bomb is a reference to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Chop Scott:

Always listening--great show as ever Dave. Cheers!
Avatar 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, Scott. Thanks! Also, hello Polyus, LPB.
  11:49pm Carmichael:

I'm waiting for Mayuko to weigh in ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm pacific standard simon:

  11:52pm rw:

Dave! I know we've got a couple minutes left, but I'd like to congratulate you on another stunning radio show!
Avatar 11:54pm HollyT:

Great show, D. Talk soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm pacific standard simon:

"Goodnight now."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Alejandroool:

been listening in, enjoying the show, Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

One hopes that Therese has no new birthday tributes to bestow....
Avatar 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, all! Have a fantastic week.
Avatar 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Yeah, let's hope not.
Avatar 11:57pm coelacanth:

Thanks Dave! Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:
