After yesterday's Bowie-fest, my first thought, was oh no, has Rod Stewart died? (Answer: not that I can tell.) Lovely piece of music. Good morning Chris.

Avatar 9:12am Chris from DC:

Yay, more Frond. Morning.
Avatar 9:12am Chris M.:

@BrianFromMA: album of the year 2015
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

No love, you're not alone.
  9:13am Polyus:

Really enjoying all the new Bevis Frond stuff on this show. He is kind of hard to keep up with - somehow manages to crank out a new record almost every year.
  9:14am bill:

THis is new? wow
  9:15am P-90:

There was probably a solid half-decade or better there when Rod's voice was a defining sound of Rock. We forget how much. Just sayin.
  9:15am Neanderthal Head:

Four Suitcases?! That's a lot of clothing.
Avatar 9:16am Marcel M:

@P-90: True, and very odd to think about.
  9:18am P-90:

Captain Kangaroo was huge in his day too.
  9:18am BrianFromMA:

When I bought this TRex LP as a kid this was the only song on it I liked...thanks for spinning it

Oh, man, I need TV when I've got T-Rex...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am DreamCricket:

Oh sweet David. Morning all, Morning Mr. M
Avatar 9:21am Chris from DC:

This one stops me in my tracks every time.
Avatar 9:23am Marcel M:

Great song. Parts of Blackstar remind me of Pink Floyd.
  9:23am BrianFromMA:

Boy doesn't it sound a lot better hearing Donny McCaslin playing the sax than Bowie...never liked his sax tone at all. What a great album this is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am steveo:

Well that gave me massive goosebumps.
Avatar 9:24am duke:

Gorgeous Bowie song
Avatar 9:33am Cecile:

P-90, ITA.
Good morning all!
Pi, you've got rhubarb pie.
Avatar 9:34am Cecile:

I can't give anything away is amazing. It would have been a hit in 1984, 2004, and 2054. Gorgeous song.
Avatar 9:35am Cecile:

goddamn it, Bowie. You make a whole album I like, and it's your last one!!!
Avatar 9:35am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 9:36am Cecile:

although Joe Belock showed me that I like enough of Scary Monsters to count it as one I like too.

Good morning, Chris M. and Powerball non-winners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Devin B.:

Stun Gun is my new favorite song.
Avatar 9:39am Cecile:

ITA Devin.
You could also rework it as "Stud Gun". Just saying.
  9:40am Mark R.:

"Stun Gun" is hilarious and great!
Avatar 9:40am Rev. Turnip Druid:

thx NGH! The label is having some kind of wicked soiree up in NYC this weekend, with live noises. It's a bit off the DC metro for me, alas...
  9:41am frog wizard:

If only I won the powerball, I could have all the stun goons I'd want
  9:42am Neanderthal Head:

Rocked Station to Station this morning. Anybody else really rate this album? Like everybody?
Avatar 9:44am Cecile:

I didn't like Golden Years when I was a kid. I've grown to like it, TVC 15, and wild is the wind (although Johnny Mathis still owns that one).
Avatar 9:45am Cecile:

here's what making me sniffle today, all these kids on Youtube going "I'm a teenager and I just discovered this David Bowie guy...." Sort of like me and Elvis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am MD:

good morning all!
Avatar 9:48am northguineahills:

@Rev: I'd love to go, but alas, I'm still unemployed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I guess discovering Bowie is a little like discovering Elvis (Rawk!), & a little like discovering the Velvet Underground (you too??!). I've been thinking that one thing about Bowie is definitely the getting hipped to various albums / parts / phases of his oeuvre - & who did that too you & when. Frankly I'm still discovering Bowie - tho' pretty solid on his earliest stuff...
Avatar 9:50am Cecile:

revrab, I've warmer to him more over that last couple of decades, and I'm sure wfmu plays a big role in that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am MD:

David will ALWAYS live in our Hearts and Souls!!! Thanks Mr. Bowie...
  9:52am Neanderthal Head:

I always loved Golden Years (check out the dancing on the Soul Train performance). Wild Is the Wind is amazing, too, as is the title track. And Word on a Wing, and...

Avatar 9:54am bobdoesthings:

good morning
  9:55am P-90:

IMO all of Bowie's seventies albums have some great stuff on them. He was consistently original, inventive, and very, very musical. He always applied great taste to whatever he was experimenting with (whatever "great taste" means)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My personal re Bowie fwiw (we all have one)...though one keeps thinking of still other things to say about him & what he meant :

I was a little brother - my Big Brother nine years older than me - & into Rawk & Glam (I remember it being called 'GlitterRawk' @ the time, but nevermind) even in smalltown NewHampshire. So - more often than not - the music would come half-clear from the other room - thru walls & under doors.
Things like Bowie in the early 1970s & my pre-teenage years, then, were powerful & mysterious indeed. (A sheltered 10-year-old half-hears 'Future Legend': l.facebook.com...… Get the picture?)
Then came self-made cassettes (later taping everybody's albums they had: Bowie's oeuvre was large & diverse & impactful enuff, it was worth long pursuit) & eventually LPs - then occasional films & finally CDs. He was always there.
...videos before 'videos' & of course the visual & theatrical expression: he was an Auteur who seemed to have another level or dimension (or @ least - or even better - suggest them) than other Rawkers...
When Bowie had something new - it was pay attention or be left behind.
Bowie *unquestionably* introduced & acclimated individuals & Society to Gayness more than anyone else ever.
Elvis & Buddy Holly took us somewhere - then TheBeatles - & the Stones took us somewhere...Dylan. Then - the doors & Syd Barrett took us somewhere - & where could we possibly go from there? Bowie was a big part of the answer - & he was no less than that & in that company.
He added to the lexicon & vocabulary as much as anyone. As Abstract Art becomes Universal by not being Representational - by mirroring the internal world of every individual - so Bowie became the strangest kind of Folk Music of the people w/ concepts & artifice.
That was an Artist.

Wow, this is a good song!
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

hey, chris m, are you going to play those also-rans, Horrendous?
Avatar 10:04am Marcel M:

I enjoyed it as well. Loved the guitar samples.
Avatar 10:05am Cecile:

I kind of love those raps where the tough guys let their guard down and reflect a little on the universe.
Avatar 10:08am Marcel M:

I think he is known to be a reflective sort of guy in general.
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

that's cool.
Avatar 10:09am Chris M.:

@Cecile: next week i'm only playing Horrendous. every track they've done ranked from worst to best.
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

don't tease me.
  10:11am sweir:

BOAR rocked! Thank you for playing.
  10:12am Ryab:

Wow, great selections today
Avatar 10:15am Chris M.:

really nice for me to get back to a regular show but don't worry there are themed shows coming up soon! it's a new year so you know what that means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Caryn:

Hmm, what music would be appropriate for an Alan Rickman tribute? All I can think of is that Bill Nighy song from "Love Actually", because a WFMU dj is not gonna bust out Bryan Adams. Any ideas?
Avatar 10:16am Cecile:

Bowie and Alan Rickman in the same week for my friend!
Avatar 10:16am dcp:

@Chris M: that means less drinking, or eating right themes? Regular exercise them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Greg from ZONE 5:

And they were the same age. This is such a bullshit week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Caryn:

Seriously, cool Brits are dropping like flies. Someone better be checking in on Bryan Ferry, Eno etc. pretty much every hour now.
Avatar 10:17am dcp:

Regular exercise *theme, goddammmitttt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Caryn:

@Greg: same age, both to cancer. It's as if the universe is trying to set up a "69 club" to compete with the "27 club". Sheesh.
Avatar 10:19am Marcel M:

I missed my chance at the 27 club so maybe I'll get into the 69 club.
Avatar 10:20am Rev. Turnip Druid:

missed th'Mammut, dammit.
...that practically rhymes. but still.
Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

Caryn, I've said that a while back!
I went "Steve Lacy, Clarence Clemons, Captain Beefheart - the 69 death club is real"
Avatar 10:22am Marcel M:

Well Lemmy just missed it.
  10:23am P-90:

Alan Rickman?! NO!!! (*sob*)
Oh, how I do NOT want the FMU site to be where I'm constantly getting death notices......

@marcel... ohhh so many jokes to make here.. I'll just leave it..
Avatar 10:23am Marcel M:

@Bob: yeah.. I was gonna slip one in but decided to leave it as well.
Avatar 10:24am dcp:

ok, what did Alan Rickman do besides the Harry Potter thing that I should know about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am DreamCricket:

Seeing 1349 tonight bring the HELLFIRE!
Avatar 10:24am Cecile:

he's one of the few good things in Love, Actually.
Avatar 10:25am bobdoesthings:

@marcel... it's all about slipping one in in the 69 club
Avatar 10:25am Marcel M:

Bowie dying shocked me as well cuz he was, well, Bowie.. but lets not get too hung up on people dying, guys. We all gonna die. No biggie.
Avatar 10:25am glenn:

he turned die hard from a pretty good movie into a great movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

@dcp - He was Hans Gruber in the original Die Hard movie.
Avatar 10:25am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 10:36am dcp:

I've been thinking I have to get around to watching Avatar too. Is that Snape guy in it?
Avatar 10:36am Cecile:

greg, I saw it drunk and with the sound off in a Mexican gay sports bar in Minneapolis one afternoon while peole were waiting for the futbol to come on. That was probably the best way to see it.
Avatar 10:36am Marcel M:

@Greg: Was it as painful as it promised to be?
Avatar 10:36am Marcel M:

@Cecile: Avatar or CBGB? Seeing anything in that situation sounds good to me.
  10:37am Ami:

Avatar 10:37am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Cecile: that sounds like the ideal way to see just about anything.
Avatar 10:37am Cecile:

Avatar. I couldn't bear to watch CBGB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Caryn:

@dcp: well, with all the CGI, you can pretend he's in it. He certainly would've improved that film.
Avatar 10:37am dcp:

..especially futbol
Avatar 10:38am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Precisely, DCP..
Avatar 10:38am Cecile:

I miss that place. They had great food and margaritas. But then they opened another gay bar across the street with great food and margaritas and drag shows, so it's a pretty good trade.
Avatar 10:39am dcp:

I need to get to more gay, sports, drag, food bars...
Avatar 10:41am Cecile:

well my local started as a food bar. Then the owner's ex-partner gunned him down and ran over him with a car. it kept going while they figured out the estate. Then, someone totally committed to good value, a welcoming vibe and theatre bought the place. it's been great.
Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

they opened an Asian/gastro/beer pub across the street in the old place. Their business is slow and their prices are high and their food sounds kind of bad. But I might go in there for a beer just to feel the place out.
  10:44am Brendan:

Bars need more TVs and people immersed in their phones so , you know, we can all spend more time not talking to each other.
Avatar 10:45am dcp:

In my neighborhood, somebody bought the totally crappy dc local band venue and turned it into a Republican sports bar (meaning the wrong kind of football). Sucks. And Bourbon (the name says it all)
Avatar 10:45am Cecile:

That sounds sad.

Avatar 10:49am dcp:

@Rev: yeah well they actually bus them in on the weekends. Nobody local goes there. And then the place is closed during the week. How does that work??
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

Avatar 10:50am Rev. Turnip Druid:

th'Grog. Quite a flashback, that.
Avatar 10:50am dcp:

*sniff* gone now.
Avatar 10:51am Cecile:

that sounds like a horrible thing to do to a neighborhood. I like sports bars fine, but why only open weekends?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am common:

my favorite venue and bar in philly - from the past - is now a fancy restaurant. funny to walk by and think about what when on in there. and sad.
Avatar 10:53am Cecile:

I don't mind when venues keep going, but I also like them to keep a little of the past.
Avatar 10:53am dcp:

Backward-forwards spellings are palindromes, not the other thing you mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Caryn:

@dcp: maybe that's the reason. They want to avoid "the wrong people" going there. Only those bussed in are allowed.

Dat intro was like metal brah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Devin B.:

@DCP: that's pretty lame. i don't get that far NW very often, but it sounds like the same kind of BS that's happening all over DC.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Caryn:

It's weird having this wordplay discussion while simultaneously watching Countdown. (For those who don't know, it's all about word games and math.)
Avatar 11:05am Chris M.:

@Caryn: 8 out of 10 cats does countdown is one of my favorite shows. i've seen every episode.
Avatar 11:06am dcp:

Yeah, you gotta keep the 20-30-something, upwardly mobile, tv-culture types happy.
Avatar 11:06am Chris M.:

@Caryn: do you pause the puzzles or do you play properly?
Avatar 11:07am northguineahills:

Huh, never heard of Winterfylleth.
Avatar 11:07am Cecile:

I could vanquish some barleycorns in liquid form about now
Avatar 11:07am dcp:

actually Gover Park has been pretty steady over the years but the landlords are turning booting all the old places out and replacing them with chain-like shit. Which is DEF happening all over NW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Caryn:

@Chris: yeah, I decided to watch every episode of that again. Just watching episode 1. And I play properly (although if Jimmy Carr does something really eyecatching during the 30 seconds, it may distract me so much that I rewind to the start of the time just to have the 30 seconds to do it.
Avatar 11:09am Chris M.:

@Caryn: i need to be on that show. someone should start a petition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am coelacanth:

i'm already looking forward to some liquid barley concoction that i wont partake in for at least 8 hours.

  11:10am nickromby:

that earthless jam was chronic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am coelacanth:

whose image graces the i.m. page today? she looks familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am coelacanth:

...not i.m.! - i.r..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Caryn:

If there's a petition, I'll sign it.

I suppose you could be in the audience, and then be like that one guy that got the math problem when Rachel didn't and got himself 10 points. Then you'd technically be a contestant. (Of course, if regular Countdown is going on, you could really be a contestant - but I stopped caring about regular Countdown when that douche from The Apprentice started hosting.)
Avatar 11:12am Chris M.:

@coelacanth: my girlfriend
  11:12am Blinda:

I am just tuning in, first it was Earthless (sounding a lot like ozzie to me) and then BLAMMO I get hit with John Barleycorn. Makes me feel like I"m in the bedroom of some teenage boy in the 70's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am coelacanth:

(i think i was thinking "Chris Radio with Imaginary M."
Avatar 11:13am Chris M.:

@Caryn: don't be ridiculous i want to be ON the show not in the audience!
  11:13am Blinda:

@Caryn is Countdown an English show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am coelacanth:

Chris - i've seen her around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Andrew Waterloo:

Countdown is a real show?
  11:15am Brendan:

That Barleycorn track has me in the mood for some seitan mutton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am coelacanth:

imaginary real.
Avatar 11:15am dcp:

wow @Brendan. Where does one get that. I feel seitanny now..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Caryn:

@Blinda: yep
Avatar 11:16am Chris from DC:

There's a great video out there of the Frond doing the Countdown theme, as Nick was on the show once.
Avatar 11:16am dcp:

THE WHO!!! Haven't heard this in a while
Avatar 11:17am Chris M.:

@Chris from DC: i need to see it please
  11:18am Blinda:

Do you know Only Connect? Good mix of trivia/math/wordplay and somewhat puzzly too.
  11:18am Brendan:

genuine imitation elk meat
Avatar 11:18am KP:

The Ox! THanks there Chris.
  11:19am Dean:

"Only Connect"? Literary allusion, too, then. Forster, right?
  11:19am BrianFromMA:

So I take it that Winterfylleth is normally a detah metal outfit? That was a nice track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Andrew Waterloo:

in my mind I am shouting YES YES YES in my Butthead voice, in reality I am stoic and writing code.
  11:19am Blinda:

ummmm I think it's Yeats but don't quote me. Off to look it up!
  11:20am Blinda:

Ah, death metal. I learned what that was last week!
  11:20am Brendan:

Yeah baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Caryn:

@Chris M: would you settle for dictionary corner? You'd get to hang out with Suzy.

@Blinda: yeah, Only Connect is fun, but I consider myself lucky if I get more than 2-3 questions right.
Avatar 11:22am Chris M.:

@Caryn: i'll be the best dictionary corner guest they ever had

Epigraph to "Howard's End," sequel to "Howard's Turn." (Last part's a joke.)

Avatar 11:30am Chris from DC:

There was a shorter version of that Countdown with Nick, but all I found was this. www.youtube.com...
  11:32am Blinda:

@caryn seriously? That's how it's easier??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Caryn:

@Blinda: heh, well, the missing vowels round and the round where you get the board of items you need to organise into groups are the easiest rounds on Only Connect. The rest can be really tricky. Countdown is easier, just having the word rounds and math rounds. Heck, University Challenge is generally easier than Only Connect (unless recent episodes of OC have been really dumbed down).

  11:42am Dean:

  11:43am Blinda:

@Caryn it really depends on where in the season you are. The early matches are less challenging. Or maybe I'm just naturally talented at spotting connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Caryn:

@Chris: Your conundrum today: LONGMICKY

And your 30 seconds starts...now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Caryn:

I'm clearly giving Chris extra time here, what with the DJing and everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Devin B.:

ELIF are the letters and nobody knows how much time we have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Caryn:

Sadly, the conundrum round went to Devin B, who got "mockingly".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Devin B.:

i also took way longer than 30 seconds.
Avatar 11:50am Chris M.:

nicely done Devin. although i think you'll find that i scored better overall therefore winning today's countdown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Caryn:

Well, not "sadly" for Devin of course, but Chris played a blinder otherwise by providing an excellent soundtrack for the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Devin B.:

congrats! i'm gonna have to watch this show now.
Avatar 11:51am Chris M.:

i rarely ever get the conundrum anyway
  11:52am Dean:

If there were a punk version of this Countdown show, would participants only get seven seconds to answer a question?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Caryn:

I'm sure someone will mail the teapot to you soon, Chris.
Avatar 11:52am Cecile:

you get a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni and Turtle Wax. Chris M's suits provided by Botany 500.
Avatar 11:52am bobdoesthings:

noon already.. dang.. thanks Chrism!! great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Caryn:

I think the punks would rather watch The Crystal Maze (what with Richard O'Brian) or The Krypton Factor (with the devilish difficulty and people genuinely hurting themselves).
