@BillMac: You mean release an album on your birthday and then kick the bucket a few days later? The guy calculated his whole life but still lived it. Stunning.

I saw them twice in the 80s and there didn't seem much fear there. I think he was sick of the grind. It would be nice if the guys could do another album but I think that moment has long since passed.

  1:05am Dean:

I don't remember even having an opportunity to hear XTC live during the early years, but I know I never saw them. I lost interest in them, generally in rock altogether, during their years of commercial success. But before that time I collected everything of theirs.

  1:57am Dean:

I've explored a bit the polarity issue with XTC's "Skylarking." I had no idea Rundgren was the producer, which goes to show how out of it chose to be at the time. The details online are sketchy about the album. My guess is that the record suffers from the same problem that plagues many recordings, namely reversed polarity. According to Clark Johnsen, who has been the loudest polarity evangelist--see http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue1/cjwoodeffect.htm--one must determine for every record one plays its correct polarity. Once that's known, you adjust your system accordingly. Recordings with reverse polarity require reversing the reversal: switch the black and red cables on your speakers or, if your preamplifer permits it, switch the polarity there. (My preamplifer is by default reverse, so my speaker cables are always switched, but that won't correct the problem Johnsen perceives.) FWIW, I don't bother.
Avatar 1:57am Bill Mac:

NGH See ya Mon! Thanks for the drink!

Morning Bill and all

Ha fish...and here I was thinking it's right up your alley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59am pacific standard simon:

I want to hear the Bowie version mashed up with some similar vintage Miles Davis.
Avatar 2:00am Bill Mac:

@Dean AP and TR didn't get along during those sessions. I heard a story where TR is tall has an irregular gait. When he would walk from his house to the studio, Andy and the Boys would play the Munsters Theme.... eh, guess you had to be there.
Avatar 2:00am coelacanth:

Dean, my father had an old fisher tube amp with a switch for that. i guess no one bothers with that any more though.
Avatar 2:00am Bill Mac:

Hey Fran! Good to have you by!
Avatar 2:02am coelacanth:

welcome Fran.

V,you were not! i'm not qualified.
  2:03am Dean:

Figures. Now the Munsters theme is the predominant sample, if that's the word, in a song called "Uma Thurman." TR has earned an irregular gait, I suppose.

@coelacanth: "an old fisher tube amp with a switch..." is such a happy phrase!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am pacific standard simon:

Has anyone done a rock book about bands that hated their producers? I'm sure Phil Spector, Todd Rundgren and Al Kooper could generate such a thing.
Avatar 2:04am Bill Mac:

@Dean & CC - Very evocative, like an Ivor Cutler verse.
Avatar 2:04am coelacanth:

ha! it had LOTS of switches! ..good switches!
  2:04am V Priceless:

Dean: yes, the polarity was reversed during the mastering process, which, to my ears, resulted in an overall tinny, thin sound thoughout. Corrected version is lush and full-sounding, if that makes any sense.
  2:04am Dean:

@Bill Mac: Yes, precisely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05am daupomatic:

Dammit, Dean. Now I'll have to look up that Munster-Thurman song, and I know it's going to hurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05am Fran:

AP now in hindsight recognised TR plated a blinder with the production - 2 stubborn heads butting I think! New AP book coming out this year - collected interviews so there may be more insight. Now if TR had tried to impose some of the horrible dated electronic/dance sounds he has more recently killed his otherwise good songs with..........
  2:06am Dean:

@VP: Perhaps so. But if Johnsen is correct, and if the problem is reverse polarity (as opposed to something else) then anybody could have simply switched positive for negative at the loudspeaker posts and corrected it.
  2:07am Dean:

Don't do it, daupomatic.
Avatar 2:09am coelacanth:

for what it's worth, if i needed a producer i'd never work with rundgren.
  2:12am Dean:

If I needed a producer/engineer, it'd be Marc Rusch in a heartbeat. His recordings (C.I.M.P.) are uniformly marvelous.

beefheart and now I miss picking up berries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18am Guido from Cologne:

love the demo version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18am pacific standard simon:

My producer of choice would be Nick Lowe, I guess. Why not?

My Bpwie phases = as a teenager I loved the era Space Oddity to Hunky Dory but never understood the hype around Ziggy - I've learned to like it since but not love it. Diamond Dogs great but Aladdin Sane is amazingly good. Station to Station through to Scary Monsters is one of the greatest runs of albums I can think of - wonderful. 80's - frustrating mixed bag but not as bad as some make out. 90's - still don't get the drum and bass stuff - that was his Todd Rundgren ruining otherwise good songs era. Tin Machine better than credited. 2000s - not bad. The Next Day - a bit harsh Bill - it had its moments. Blackstar - what I've hear is great and I almost bought it on Saturday but now I'm going to wait for a month or two to buy it - partly to allow the ambulance chasers to bore of Bowie being their favourite ever pop star (before saying they loved that song of his 'In the Air Tonight') and partly to listen objectively myself.....
Avatar 2:20am coelacanth:

ha! okay i'll try but no promises!
( -you are talking about the xtc song, right?)
  2:20am Stanley:

Perhaps my line of all time "they sold wine like turpentine to painters, they took to social life like cops to aviators". Genius
Avatar 2:21am Bill Mac:

@CC Yes I am!
Avatar 2:22am Bill Mac:

@Stanley It's a couplet of his that comes to me more immediately than most things he's spoken/sung.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am pacific standard simon:

I think that's why I'm not taking this Bowie exit all that hard -- I've been through it so many times with artists I was more influenced by. Zappa + Beefheart, for two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23am Fran:

Lots of good 'producers'out there but most of them are only as good as their engineer.......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23am pacific standard simon:

That would be "crops to aviators', BTW.
Avatar 2:24am coelacanth:

engineer= unsung hero.
  2:26am Dean:

That's why I fudged the producer/engineer thing with Rusch. Also, Marc Aubort. Gorgeous recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am pacific standard simon:

Damn, I thought this was The Cramps at first.
Avatar 2:28am Bill Mac:

PSS I'm with you on the Zappa & Beefheart comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am pacific standard simon:

Rickey certainly has the right spirit, all right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30am pacific standard simon:

Losing Viv Stanshall gutted me.
Avatar 2:31am Bill Mac:

I don't think I heard about Viv until well after it happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31am Guido from Cologne:

Killer Track by lenny drake, in moments sounds like Cramps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

I am all done (doing dishes)! Glad that task is out of the way.
Avatar 2:33am coelacanth:

i Loved Heroes (& 7 albums before that)then hated Lodger,mostly- and the next one- then gave up on Bowie when let's dance came. the glimpses of his commercial pop hits that i heard through the years were rarely terrible, but not Great either.
...then on friday when i heard some of "✭" i was practically overwhelmed. it's so honest and pure and poetic and i thought "this is what you could've been doing all this time". i felt very happy and optimistic about Bowie then and decided already i'd get that album.
...maybe that's partly why it hit me as hard as it has.
  2:37am Stanley:

"Props to aviators" according to Beefheart.com I'll have to revise my best lines list yet again
  2:37am rw:

I think the thing about Bowie is that his appeal and influence was so far reaching. Something I hadn't really considered until the past few dozen hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38am pacific standard simon:

I did my dishes before the show. Organized. Made kielbasa, cabbage & potato soup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38am Alejandroool:

Dustbin Divers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41am pacific standard simon:

@Stanley - That makes sense, too. I always thought it was a reference to the crop-dusters that Beefheart must have seen out there in the Palmdale/Lancaster area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42am pacific standard simon:

You're probably right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44am Guido from Cologne:

Loved the shoW!
Thanks Bill!
... off to the dentist ...
Avatar 2:44am Bill Mac:

@PSS I would've thought that crop dusters made more sense...

btw thanks for bringing up food
  2:45am rw:

Stanley, I had always heard that line as props. I think I like cops better though!
Avatar 2:45am Bill Mac:

Thanks Guido, Go get yanked! I'll see you soon!
  2:45am Stanley:

As a thirteen year old you can imagine the effect Ziggy Stardust had on me. A wonderful introduction to teenage life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46am pacific standard simon:

Thanks, Bill Mac, for picking up a fill-in shift when I'm not working. I've missed a lot of them lately due to scheduling conflicts.
Avatar 2:46am Bill Mac:

@Stanley Agreed - a perfect album all around
Avatar 2:48am Bill Mac:

@PSS I appreciate you hanging around and mixing it up. It makes the show experience a lot better when I know you're out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48am Alejandroool:

golden recording, this song...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49am Alejandroool:

Always a sucker for this kind of bouncy bass playing
  2:50am rw:

Yes. Thank you Mr. Mac! Your shows are always a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am pacific standard simon:

Bowie albums were hit-and-miss affairs for me, except for Pin-Ups, Hunky Dory, and The Man Who Sold The World. The thing is, with Bowie, it wasn't about the albums -- it was about HIM.
Avatar 2:51am coelacanth:

well now i wonder if i missed some good music between let's dance and now. i've barely heard anything besides the predictable pop hits since 1983, and it's usually been the "deep album cuts" that were best.
also,"(eyepatch)fox" said ✭ reminds her of "outside", so i have a feeling there's all kinds of diversity in those 3 decades that i'm mostly oblivious to. with his supreme talent for arrangement there must be good in there. i feel foolish for not giving ANY of it a chance all this time.
Avatar 2:52am Bill Mac:

@Alejandroool There's a lot of soul music that I should make it my business to play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52am pacific standard simon:

...and I'll just throw in my approval of this Spinners track. Lord knows I didn't appreciate it when it was released, but ch-ch-changes...
Avatar 2:52am Bill Mac:

@CC I like Sound & Vision even though the production onsome of that stuff is kind of thin
  2:54am Stanley:

@pss - agreed but within all that self obsession there came out some great tunes though I always thought he relied on others when it came to his best stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am Fran:

Classic Caetano ............great show Bill. Have a good day and see you soon Bill and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56am pacific standard simon:

I'd trust Bill Mac to DJ an Anthony Bourdain TV show.
Avatar 2:56am coelacanth:

simon, that marketing always disgusted me. especially the suit/hat,dapper bullshit. but it sometimes was an injustice to the Great music on the albums- as with Aladin Sane,Heroes,Ziggy. i wish he hadn't done that but i guess it's why his name is a household word.
Avatar 2:57am Bill Mac:

Friends, thanks for coming out on a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning! Hopefully I won't be in the either too long. Take care and be well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57am Ken From Hyde Park:

Take care, Bill. This was a nice little party tonight.
Avatar 2:58am coelacanth:

isn't "sound and vision" on low? i love that album!
  2:58am Stanley:

Bugger Time has reached for that ol'cigarette already. Thanks Bill. Miss the old Saturday's but always great to hear you again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58am pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - We'll have to disagree on that. I thought it was perfect for him.
Avatar 3:00am coelacanth:

oh shit i should've been asleep by 12!
Thanks Bill! Great show.
g'night people.
Avatar 9:15am Brian in UK:

Used to have The Man with the Four Way Hips on green vinyl.
Bolan used to wear ballet pumps, leastways that was what he was wearing when he spoke to me, made my wife mad as hell when I told her.

The dustbin men were collecting just as I was writing earlier.

Remember seeing Vinegar Joe supporting Lindisfarne. The piano player impressed turned out it was Robert Palmer. Loved his early albums with Little Feat. This track is a bit like LF.

Never really liked Ziggy probably because it was electric guitar driven. Thought Hunky Dory & Lodger cooked.

Might see you on the stream soon, old bean?
