I heard Therese play some Bowie for his birthday early in her show, then fell asleep before the news broke and she apparently played a bunch of stuff in memoriam... Bowie knew the news would explode when it came because he had concealed the extent of his illness so well. Impeccable showman all the way.

"Freeform" means never having to say you're sorry for playing happy music instead of robotically diving into a "death march". And DB certainly would have approved.

Elvis & Buddy Holly took us somewhere - then TheBeatles - & the Stones took us somewhere...then - the doors & Syd Barrett took us somewhere - & where could we possibly go from there? Bowie was a big part of the answer - & he was no less than that & in that company.

@Parq@9:58, I think mostly CDs still go to radio stations, but FMU sometimes gets MP3s and cover art via digital download instead, and a volunteer will sometimes burn prominent ones to CD-R because w/o a physical presence in the New Bin, FMU DJs will miss them. (As a note to the DJs, that's why that new Coil CD-R cover art is so awful. Blame the label.)

This is from Roddy Doyle today on Facebook:

-See David Bowie died.
-See now – that makes no fuckin’ sense. Wha’ you just said.
-I know wha’ yeh mean. How can Bowie be dead? He was never alive, like the rest of us.
-Tha’ makes no fuckin’ sense either. But it’s bang on.
-I remember once, I was havin’ me breakfast. An’ I saw me da starin’ at me. So, I said, ‘Wha’?’ An’ he says, ‘Are yeh goin’ to work lookin’ like tha’?’ I still servin’ me time and, like, I was wearin’ me work clothes. An’ me overalls were in me bag. So I didn’t know what he was on abou’. ‘Get up an’ look at yourself in the fuckin’ mirror,’ he says. I was still wearin’ me Aladdin Sane paint. Across me face, like.
-You were ou’ the night before.
-Not really. Only down the road. Sittin’ on the wall beside the chipper, with the lads. Sneerin’ at the fuckin’ world. But that was what it was like. Bowie was our God.
-He has a new record ou’. Last week, just. Know how I know?
-How?
-Me granddaughter. She showed me his video. ‘Blackstar’. Unbelievable. Brillant. Scary.
-Business as usual.
-Exactly.
-It’s so fuckin’ sad.
-Yeah.

Agree with all who say the Tin Machine records are way underrated. One thing you had to give Bowie credit for is that he was very supportive of his contemporaries - Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Eno, Iggy etc. Tin Machine's version of "If There Is Something" has to be the greatest cover among many covers Bowie loved to do. A great artist we'll all have forever!
