What's going on? Sounds like a bunch of damn hippies took over the station!
Swag For Life Member 9:16am tadpoles:

Sorry Joe. With Bowie's death I'm dis com BoB ulated! I meant Hey Joe.

@OTB: WFMU is a hippie station, didn't you know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am doctorjazz:

Hey all, strange, sad morning today.
  9:17am Claw!:

Haha, OTB. Damn hippies.

Yo, P-90!
  9:17am Brendan:

Always liked Ian and Silvia. She's got a little June Carter in her voice.
Avatar 9:17am Joe McG:

Now I know why Therese played so much Bowie last night. I didn't know. Ugh.
Avatar 9:18am maja:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Marcel M:

@Joe: You just found out? I woke up to a text from my uncle at 5 am about it. Went back to sleep and had a lot of troubled dreams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Uncle Michael:

I love Hitchcock Railway....great versions by Jose Feliciano and Joe Cocker.
Avatar 9:22am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Yes, I wish I didn't know now. I made some plans for today's show. I don't want to do a death march today. I'm going to play happy music. Or try to!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am annie:

i'm sure the airwaves will be full of DB. personally, i'll be happy to just hear none right now.. just sayin'
  9:24am P-90:

I heard Therese play some Bowie for his birthday early in her show, then fell asleep before the news broke and she apparently played a bunch of stuff in memoriam... Bowie knew the news would explode when it came because he had concealed the extent of his illness so well. Impeccable showman all the way.
Avatar 9:24am Chris from DC:

I'll be playing lots of my own later on at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am coelacanth:

good morning Joe and all.
...there'll be plenty of Bowie tributes. don't sweat it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am melinda:

Damn, I didn't know about Bowie. Joe, I like the hippie takeover of the studio, it's making the news a bit less sad. Feels appropriate.
Avatar 9:25am Joe McG:

I was going to play something from his new one anyway, which the station just got. I'll keep it to that one cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Marcel M:

@Joe: Understandable. I was hoping you'd play something from the new one, cuz I have not heard it yet.
Avatar 9:26am Van in DC:

Was shocked to find out about Bowie. One of those "I remember where I was when I found out" moments for me.
  9:26am P-90:

"Freeform" means never having to say you're sorry for playing happy music instead of robotically diving into a "death march". And DB certainly would have approved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am annie:

yeah, something that hasn't been over-played yet, joe?
  9:27am statoj:

Let us remember that Bowie began his career singing Joni Mitchell songs in a long skirt in coffee houses. So your set this morning rings the right note. I will miss all of him always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Marcel M:

Did anyone know he had cancer? I had no idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am coelacanth:

on friday Dan played a track from the new one and it made me feel really good and optimistic about Bowie's music, for the first time in years. then Mark played 4-5 tracks from it this morning...
it's really fucking good.
Avatar 9:28am bobdoesthings:

I did not.. but then again I didn't know Lemmy had cancer either
  9:29am KP:

Break a president?
  9:30am P-90:

@statoj: I was thinking the same thing: this music is from the time and musical place where DB started, so it couldn't be more fitting to the occasion. Bravo, Joe.
  9:31am KP:

Morning, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

That's one psychedelic guitar solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Marcel M:

@BOB: Me either but I don't think Lemmy even knew until 3 days before he died.
  9:32am statoj:

Right on, P-90 (and Joe).
  9:34am Brendan:

Lits of 'and' artists in this set, which is great
  9:35am Brendan:

Unlike my typo which is not so great (lots)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am sphere:

good morning. RIP Bowie. si momentum requiris, circumspice.

I try to connect to my pre Internet mind everyday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Planet Tyler:

  9:41am Claw!:

Great Guardian piece on this last Bowie album being his way of saying goodbye:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am coelacanth:

they do have a solid core. and he was up front about the persona thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am coelacanth:

hey Bear!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Planet Tyler:

DB was the perfect spiritual adviser for me, for lots of us....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am redkayak:

I appreciate DB (among many reasons) for the musicians he exposed me to. He sure knew music...
  9:43am KP:

I was listening from like 4 am to 6. It was all Bowie but I couldn't hear DJ and assumed it was part of recent wave of interest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Guess the Jim & Jean is Phil Ochs' song. Such a beautiful melody.
Avatar 9:45am OTB:

That was a very thoughtful eulogy, Joe.
  9:46am riff randell:

Beautifully said, Joe.

I saw the play Lazarus. Was surprised how good this track sounded when it recently came out but then again it's him and not some actor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am redkayak:

@Parq Gotta love Firesign Theatre....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Mike East:

I was singing "All the Madmen" all morning, then my wife texted me the news on the train. Sad day. Good morning, Joe and all. Thanks for this track, Joe.
  9:54am Brendan:

It was cool to see Dexter singing this (Lazarus ) in the musical he's starring in.
Btw , porcupine tree does a beautiful song called Lazarus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Marcel M:

No US Vinyl release for this? Hmmm.... I may have to order the import.

Avatar 9:58am ----|d¢ (pät)|----:

Hi everybloody. Sorry about Ziggy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am the sugarwolf:

@Joe: I am still full of positive energy from seeing old friends and meeting new ones and hearing great music and I'm going to keep that in my heart all week (and then some) to counteract the sadness I feel about DB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Parq:

So what media do they release major-label records in nowadays? Besides MP3 downloads, I mean. And when they send a release to a station like FMU, what medium do they send it in?
  10:02am Brendan:

pulling out all the stops!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Mike East:

the artist is just called "solo organ"?
Avatar 10:02am βrian:

Oh, stop it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am sphere:

I know the Mego people have download codes for reviewers. Maybe the labels do that for stations too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Marcel M:

Woah.... this Solo Organ track is really great. Very nice coming out of the Bowie track.
Avatar 10:04am northguineahills:

I'm assuming even though the album is called Atom Heart and Beyond the Infinite, it has nothing to do w/ Atom Heart aka/Atom/aka Senor Coconut etc.
  10:05am bill:

everybody at work is watching Bowie videos. It's like Baby Diego

Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

Just heard about Bowie. That is a huge loss. Not a big personally to me as Lemmy, but even as an admirer than a lover of his work, he left a huge impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am the sugarwolf:

@Cecile: it is weird to be in a world without Bowie or Lemmy.
Avatar 10:11am ----|d¢ (pät)|----:

It's funny thinking about Lemmy and Bowie at the same time.
  10:11am Polyus:

@Marcel - I noticed that too. CDs are fine by me, though. Just thinking my local stores will be cleaned out and I may have to buy a copy from the evil empire.

Otis Clay died?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe! All recovered from Saturday I hope?
Avatar 10:17am Joe McG:

Yes. Todd did a nice tribute on Saturday, but I'm a fan, so I wanted to tip my hat, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

Didn't hear about Otis Clay, oy!
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

@Greg: Yep! How was Jonesy? Did everybody check out the Jones party yesterday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Brian in UK:

@Cecile both died two days after their birthdays from the same disease.
Avatar 10:20am dcp:

I'll say this about Bowie: his death really makes me feel old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Greg from ZONE 5:

Great times! Jonesy & X Ray were on FIRE yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am coelacanth:

Avatar 10:22am Cecile:

I am feeling the way my parents did when Elvis and Sinatra and Jim Reeves and Charlie Rich and everyone passed.
Avatar 10:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx for your words about Bowie Joe McG. I had FMU on all night & I think the news woke me up during Mark R. I'm glad to hear it from FMU & I'm glad to have FMU to share it w/.
Elvis & Buddy Holly took us somewhere - then TheBeatles - & the Stones took us somewhere...then - the doors & Syd Barrett took us somewhere - & where could we possibly go from there? Bowie was a big part of the answer - & he was no less than that & in that company.
Avatar 10:24am βrian:

On the way up from twelve below. It doesn't help to hear about DB. Makes me want to burrow with the headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am annie:

i actually shared the vocals-only version of "under pressure" yesterday on FB.. i never got into Bowie, but there were a select few that hit me, that was one.
Avatar 10:28am pseydtonne:

I'm probably one of the few that really liked Tin Machine. My wife is really bummed about the news...
Avatar 10:28am OTB:

Somehow we have John Philip Sousa to blame for this....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am sphere:

i'm a Tin Machine fan too. they were totally underrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am ChrisB.:

Ha. I saw the USC Marching Band perform this in the grandstand of Santa Anita racetrack, right around the time Tusk was released. Blew us away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am joe:

'ello folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Guido from Cologne:

Eno is way more important than Bowie and
Tusk is the only song i like from the Tusk album.
Avatar 10:30am emptydesk:

Guido, don't.
Avatar 10:31am herb.nyc:

cancer takes LEMMY and BOWIE - maybe TRUMP will visit the doctor and learn he too has. and like the former, will die in a few days.
Avatar 10:31am Cecile:

I am much more of an Eno fan, but in terms of an impact on pop culture within and outside the music world, I have to say as a popularizer he was rarely matched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am joe:

I don't know Chinese Democracy has to be pretty high up there I would think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am ChrisB.:

@joe: my favorite too. May have to buy that reissue.
Avatar 10:32am pseydtonne:

Eno vs Bowie is not a competition. They worked together, they each built entire genres, they helped Iggy get off heroin.
  10:32am Listener Robert:

Ivory soap ads should use "Tusk" as jingle music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Marcel M:

Yeah I don't understand the need to compare them both like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am joe:

I didn't know about Otis how did I miss this? :(
Avatar 10:33am pseydtonne:

Wait, that means Iggy Pop outlived Lou, Lemmy, AND Bowie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am coelacanth:

shall we compare everybody else who ever worked with Bowie?
  10:34am P-90:

i'm with you Joe, I always liked Tusk, song and album, and knew it would be many years before it was recognized.
Avatar 10:34am pseydtonne:

Avatar 10:35am dcp:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am coelacanth:

pseydtonne so did Keith Richard.

...although my theory is that Keith lives a fairly clean life and he got clean years ago and plays up the drug-life for marketing reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am 1ke:

@Parq@9:58, I think mostly CDs still go to radio stations, but FMU sometimes gets MP3s and cover art via digital download instead, and a volunteer will sometimes burn prominent ones to CD-R because w/o a physical presence in the New Bin, FMU DJs will miss them. (As a note to the DJs, that's why that new Coil CD-R cover art is so awful. Blame the label.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Joe and Monday people. Let's not forget Ozzy with his age-defying DNA.
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@dennis: Thanks for that story, Dennis. Very sad indeed. But so much good music for us for as long as we live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am coelacanth:

yup, Ozzy's another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am coelacanth:

my usual coffee house must be a sad place right now. the owners (esp the hubbie) practically worship Bowie; and (coincidentally) 2 of Bowie's guitarists go there regularly.

earlier yesterday I was pondering how Iggy has survived for so long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Brian in UK:

@coelacanth have you heard Keith Richard's cough. Kills all known germs.
Avatar 10:48am emptydesk:

Iggy is an engine with motor oil for blood.

We were at the Woody Woodmansey/Visconti gig at the Highline Friday. Tony called DB from his cell phone on stage, held it up to the crowd, and we all sang Happy Birthday to him. Beyond sad here. Thanks for all the good vibes, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am JtotheK:

hi everyone. bummed this morning, was the first news I read...
Avatar 10:50am Jeff:

This is from Roddy Doyle today on Facebook:

-See David Bowie died.
-See now – that makes no fuckin’ sense. Wha’ you just said.
-I know wha’ yeh mean. How can Bowie be dead? He was never alive, like the rest of us.
-Tha’ makes no fuckin’ sense either. But it’s bang on.
-I remember once, I was havin’ me breakfast. An’ I saw me da starin’ at me. So, I said, ‘Wha’?’ An’ he says, ‘Are yeh goin’ to work lookin’ like tha’?’ I still servin’ me time and, like, I was wearin’ me work clothes. An’ me overalls were in me bag. So I didn’t know what he was on abou’. ‘Get up an’ look at yourself in the fuckin’ mirror,’ he says. I was still wearin’ me Aladdin Sane paint. Across me face, like.
-You were ou’ the night before.
-Not really. Only down the road. Sittin’ on the wall beside the chipper, with the lads. Sneerin’ at the fuckin’ world. But that was what it was like. Bowie was our God.
-He has a new record ou’. Last week, just. Know how I know?
-Me granddaughter. She showed me his video. ‘Blackstar’. Unbelievable. Brillant. Scary.
-Business as usual.
-It’s so fuckin’ sad.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am joe:

Joe I love when you play stuff like this because outside of the context of full albums I find myself being able to enjoy it. I could never listen to a full Steely Dan album from front to back but on a single track bases it sounds great to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am annie:

i don't think i've ever heard a bad version of this song..maybe it's just because i love the tempo and the lyrcis bubbling in and around it.
  10:55am Flynn:

Agree with all who say the Tin Machine records are way underrated. One thing you had to give Bowie credit for is that he was very supportive of his contemporaries - Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Eno, Iggy etc. Tin Machine's version of "If There Is Something" has to be the greatest cover among many covers Bowie loved to do. A great artist we'll all have forever!
