Hi Chris! Happy New Year all!
Avatar 9:03am Chris M.:

happy new year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am annie:

Avatar 9:16am duke:

Happy almost 2016
Avatar 9:19am ottovonbqe:

I trust this set will culminate in a sludge metal bye bye blackbird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am efd:

why do you hate blackbirds, Chris?
Avatar 9:24am Chris M.:

@ottovonbqe: i hope it does
@efd: maybe i love them too much
Avatar 9:26am doncaballero:

3 hours of Bye Bye Blackbird > 3 hours of Lemmy tribute = Kickass way to end 2015!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am annie:

i think is going to be fine...really... sure.. ok.... oops, gotta go!!

9:31am neil who is WILD, man:

So I guess the theme is goodbye to 2015 and the blackbird is 2015??
  9:32am HDF:

13 ways of listening to a blackbird. I can remember a series of casio keyboards i had as a kid that would play 'bye bye blackbird' as a preset if you punched in the right code
Avatar 9:32am Cecile:

hi/bye annie.
Can you play something from the new Horrendous album?
Avatar 9:33am nathaxn walker:

That new Horrendous album is great, Cecile! I also love blackbirds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Ken From Hyde Park:

Red wing blackbirds are cool, but the less common yellow headed blackbird is a fine bird as well.
Avatar 9:34am nathaxn walker:

The last Horrendous album is also great!
Avatar 9:34am Cecile:

Also, 3 hours of Lemmy > everything.
Avatar 9:34am Chris M.:

@Cecile: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:35am nathaxn walker:

Hooray for Lemmy!!! Sadness for Lemmy!!!
Avatar 9:35am Cecile:

If it's going to be 3 hours of Blackbird, I'm a'gonna go listen to Horrendous. And then some Motorhead. Sorry, all.
Avatar 9:36am Chris M.:

what's everyone's new year's resolution that they plan on breaking right away?
Avatar 9:37am ottovonbqe:

Not cheating on my wife.
Avatar 9:37am Jay/London:

it can not be a whole show of blackbird !!!
Avatar 9:38am Cecile:

otto, hah. I hope.

I am planning on managing my vices better this year. After I have a blowout night at the drag bar tonight with a bunch of drunks. The place is appropriately named Lush.
Avatar 9:41am Cecile:

*changes to Horrendous* that's better.
  9:42am RenRen:

Is this normal
Avatar 9:43am Cecile:

nothing is never normal with this show.
He doesn't usually play 3 hours of one song, though.
Avatar 9:43am Cecile:

and there's infinitely more death metal.
Avatar 9:44am Parq:

Somebody should have told Anthony Newly that Sinatra could pull off that type of Daddy-o lyrical riffing because he was Sinatra. And thanks for playing Miles, my personal favorite take on the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Ken From Hyde Park:

I resolve to use my left hand for mundane things like picking up fallen pencils. I figure it'll help balance my brain somewhat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am annie:

hi/bye cecile. you sticking around? i am..
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

Yes, except I'm not listening to what he's playing.
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

Avatar 9:47am ottovonbqe:

I'm not listening and I have a piece of paper over the playlist part of the screen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Ike:

I'm not listening, not commenting, not looking at the playlist, *and* I'm flushing this monitor down the toilet!
Avatar 9:51am Cecile:

you win.
Avatar 9:53am nathaxn walker:

the nina simone rendition of bye bye blackbird was pretty rocking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am annie:

yes, but now i'm in the kitchen making breakfast: home-made knish, topped with bacon and spinach; lotsa buttah!
Avatar 9:54am Cecile:

9:54am neil who is WILD, man:

THIS must be some kind of radio history or even Guiness level !! Could somebody check? @Chris-you should call the people at Guiness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am annie:

Avatar 9:57am Chris M.:

@neil who is WILD, man: they said if i pull this off, i win a keg of their superb beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am annie:

omg, he's even playing them by year!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am annie:

sonny stitt, now my day is complete. .. and i like the fact that the same words are in the middle box, it totally satisfies my neat-oriented brain
  10:01am Fred R:

Awesome Chris! Very eclectic titles in the playlist.
Avatar 10:01am nathaxn walker:

for my new years resolution, which I will keep, I will stop baking blackbirds into pies, but it is an easy one to keep as I have never actually done so nor ever seriously considered doing so, not even now.
Avatar 10:02am Parq:

Is this really gonna be the whole three hours? It'll be kind of like a baseball no-hitter --the closer he gets to pulling it off, the more of a nail-biter it'll be.
Avatar 10:03am Parq:

My NY res, by the way, is as always -- I'll see what I can do.
  10:04am Pete L:

Ammons and Stitt = HIP - thank you!
Avatar 10:04am crateslinger:

My new year's resolution is five-fold. Quit drinking, quit smoking, lose weight, call my mother more, and get some virtual reality glasses.
10:04am neil who is WILD, man:

Assuming each one is, on average, 3:30 long means he needs about 51 discrete songs with no repeats. Good luck Chris!
Avatar 10:06am crateslinger:

In summation, my new year's resolution is to stop being a loser and become wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Plus, the station ID was about 20 seconds. Chris M is not messing around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Whosondephone:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am annie:

get your mother skype, crateslinger..
10:08am neil who is WILD, man:

I been hyp-no-tized! I read on Wikipedia that this song may be about a prostitute leaving the business to go back and live with her mother. Also, Tiny Tim covered this!
10:11am neil who is WILD, man:

OH, my bad, he needs sixty assuming the average song is 180 seconds long....not like I said earlier....
Avatar 10:11am nathaxn walker:

So far, 1962 has the most Blackbird of any year!
10:14am neil who is WILD, man:

This is radio history! Also, what can this do to our MINDS, man? OH the humanity!
10:15am neil who is WILD, man:

@Chris-you are allowed to take a break you know!
Avatar 10:17am ottovonbqe:

Man, 1962 was a bonanza year for BBB
  10:18am V Priceless:

Hey Chris! Fun show! Reminds me of my sis who gigs with Duchin. This is one of their standards, of course!
Avatar 10:19am Chris M.:

@V Priceless: thanks! what's Duchin?
  10:20am Dean:

I'm the lawyer for the estate of Ray Henderson, who died 45 years ago today. Can I have a word with the DJ after the show?
Avatar 10:23am Chris M.:

@Dean: yes, you can email me with the contact form at the bottom of this playlist page
Avatar 10:25am crateslinger:

Has it been three hours already? Wow, that just flew by! Nice one Chris!
  10:26am Dean:

I'd issue the cease-and-desist right here, but I'm enjoying the show too much. Please don't cease or desist. (What does "desist" mean?)
Avatar 10:26am Cecile:

I hope Chris isn't in trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Marcel M:

Woah woah...whats been going on here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am annie:

the great thing about this show is i didn't *miss* anything while i was in the kitchen. perhaps some unique stylin'.. but hey i got my imagination..
10:33am neil who is WILD, man:

@ Dean-what does "mean" mean?
Avatar 10:33am Chris M.:

@Cecile: playing the Motorhead version next
  10:33am Dean:

Chet Baker due soon? Joe Cocker? Meat Puppets? (Made up the last one.)
  10:33am JimmyfromKearny:

I'm digging this; I used to sing this song with a Scottish Cat in a few bars in Kearny...
Avatar 10:33am Cecile:

10:33am neil who is WILD, man:

OK, in 2016 I'm going to shave my face more and also groom other body hair to please my wife.
  10:34am Dean:

@neil: "Mean" means not nice. Otherwise, it depends on what the meaning of "is" is.
  10:35am smallybiggs:

Fuckin blackbirds
Avatar 10:36am crateslinger:

Everybody hates birds.
  10:36am tranewreck:

Best show ever
  10:36am Dean:

Just be grateful this isn't a show devoted to "76 Trombones." Right now we'd be up to 1672 trombones.
  10:37am Ike:

Hi @Jimmy! Sing this one on the Goddamn Dave Hill Show sometime, will ya? How's tricks? You're not resorting to living in the abandoned Pathmark on the waterfront yet, are you?
Avatar 10:37am V Priceless:

@ Chris M: Peter Duchin, son of Eddie - band leader, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Risky:

Did I miss anything!? GO CHRIS!
10:39am neil who is WILD, man:

Anybody in here remember a supermarket -a real supermarket full sized-in way downtown below Chinatown in Manhattan back in the 90's?
  10:41am JimmyfromKearny:

Ike: close, very close...
  10:42am smallybiggs:

Much better than that public radio station that plays "what are you doing New Year's Eve " for the entire day.
  10:44am smallybiggs:

There's something offputting about this Spanish
  10:45am JimmyfromKearny:

In a 1980 film, "Melvin and Howard" Jason Robards, who played Howard Hughes, sang this song while Paul LeMat drove...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Ike:

Yeah @Neil, that was also a crappy Pathmark. It was on Henry St. or Pike St. or something near the FDR.
  10:47am smallybiggs:

James Last vs Ray Connif
  10:47am katy:

I realize I don't pay much attention to jazz when I only just realized you've been playing the same song for half an hour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Ike:

Yeah @SB, my Spanish is horrendous but even I could tell that was a pretty lumpy translation. Jose needed to take more poetic license and smooth it out a little.
10:49am neil who is WILD, man:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeezy:

This is GENIUS.
  10:50am Dean:

So Mark Murphy was channeling Sammy Davis, Jr., all that time.
  10:51am JimmyfromKearny:

Can't wait to hear the version by the "Heavens Gate Choir" circa 1997...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Risky:

@Jimmy was just thinking that haha!
Avatar 10:54am crateslinger:

That gross-out Pathmark was kinda lower LES tho, not really Chinatown... I mean back then. Now Chinatown is almost that far east.

Hey Chris, Don't ever let 'em tell you you ain't got balls, kiddo!
  10:55am rich:

great show chris. happy new year.
10:57am neil who is WILD, man:

@crateslinger-I used to walk there from 3 Clinton Street (avenue B) and Houston. Another lifetime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Ike:

Actually for the big finale, Chris could take a call from Jimmy at 11:55 and have him sing this song over the air. And then he could mark it on the playlist as a 2015 rendition.
  10:57am Dave:

You're my hero
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Risky:

Yeah @Chris, thanks for a year of exceptional sounds!
Avatar 10:58am Chris M.:

@rich: thanks! happy new year
Avatar 10:58am Chris M.:

@Dave & @Risky: thank you!!
Avatar 10:59am crateslinger:

I used to go to the C town on 10th and C. Probably still there. That was back when NYC was cool, man. Now it sucks! All the people smiling in their sweaters.
  10:59am from quebec:

the subtle play of commas in the middle column is riveting.
1969 ... this is clearly going to be a 2 or even 3-part show. I'll be listening!
  11:01am Dean:

Just realized the '30s entirely missed the cut. Damn Depression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am annie:

i was trying to guess the year by the performer.. i was off by a decade-ish
Avatar 11:02am crateslinger:

They ate blackbirds in the 30's.
11:02am neil who is WILD, man:

@Crateslinger-do you live in the LES now? I am near Buffalo NY in a rural suberb in a development in wine country. But back in the day NYC was the shiznit.
  11:03am Dean:

"Bye, bye, dinner."
11:03am neil who is WILD, man:

That's gotta be some GAME-Y MEAT yo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Whosondephone:

Thank you very much Chris. I am really appreciating this.
Avatar 11:06am crateslinger:

Neil, I am a professional gentrifier. LES squats in the 80's thru mid 90's, Williamsburg loft for 20 years, and now I am in Bushwick. Somebody please kill me.
Avatar 11:07am Chris M.:

@Whosondephone: thank you!
  11:07am Shannon:

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
Avatar 11:08am nathaxn walker:

Dig the RRK! This whole show has been a delight of theme & variation & temporal drift! Thank You!
Avatar 11:08am Chris M.:

what was the best movie of 2015?
11:08am neil who is WILD, man:

@Crateslinger-ever meet Marta Vi from the squat on C near Houston? She was Portuguese...
Avatar 11:08am Chris M.:

thanks, nathaxn walker!
Avatar 11:09am Cecile:

I thought Inside Out was up there. But probably Ant-Man for me.
Avatar 11:10am Cheri Pi:

Cecile! Chris & th'm&Ms!
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

See, it's a trick finding that sweet spot between getting shot at all the time, and Mall-world. We're doing OK in our neighborhood, but it's touch and go. We're damned lucky to have an actual liveable neighborhood 2.5 miles from downtown.
11:10am neil who is WILD, man:

Umbrella house maybe? Had a Monster Magnet painting on it...
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am annie:

i liked the revenant...until everyone started making fun of leo's oscar in favor of the bear's.. but i did like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am annie:

i count it because i saw it last week.
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

Leo is a way better actor than people giove him credit for.

I also liked the Martian very much. And Spy. I didn't like about about 1/2 of the 2nd Avengers movie.
Avatar 11:12am V Priceless:

@ Chris M - Charlie Brown flick in 3D - all downhill from there.
Avatar 11:12am crateslinger:

Neil I think so. Somebody named Marta anyway. That was "umbrella house". I think they own it now. I knew a lot of folks there, but that was a more serious house and I was one of the snotty drunken punks that kept the working people up at night.
Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

I didn't see any klassy films this year. Oh wait, does that last Mad Max count? I respected it, but didn't like it very much.
  11:12am Dean:

This is from "Live at Sometime," yes?
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

VP was it good?
Avatar 11:13am Chris M.:

@Dean yep
Avatar 11:13am V Priceless:

though 'Ant-Man' was actually perty good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am annie:

i really wanted to see grandma, but i missed my window..i'll wait 'til it comes online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Ken From Hyde Park:

These guys need to get with the program. There are no blackbirds on that branch! www.google.com...
11:13am neil who is WILD, man:

@Crateslinger-met Missing Foundation once...they seemed a little...off...but they were polite to me...
Avatar 11:13am V Priceless:

Yes, C - it was fun!
  11:14am Dean:

With Google it's "Buy, buy, blackbird."
11:14am neil who is WILD, man:

Antman WAS fun!
Avatar 11:14am Cecile:

Oh, and the new Star Wars. I liked it a lot but seriously? Not as much as Ant-Man.

I gotta tell the Mister. That is definitely one to PPV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am annie:

did "birdman" come out last year? i loved that
Avatar 11:15am Cecile:

that was the year before. I still want to see it.
Avatar 11:15am crateslinger:

I am actually on a missing foundation record -Exile. I played a plastic pipe for about 30 seconds. I may even be credited - never checked.
Avatar 11:16am Chris M.:

if you want to watch a brilliant dark satire, it's "The Lobster". very funny
Avatar 11:16am crateslinger:

MF were my peeps.
11:18am neil who is WILD, man:

@Crateslinger-does Organism at the Old Dutch Mustard Factory in W
ville ring a bell? I was the geodesic dome guy in 1994...or 93
Avatar 11:18am crateslinger:

A bit off, yes. A bit dark. uh hunh. but did you ever go to one of there shows? Man, they would literally burn the motherfucker down - with like flames and gasoline.
Avatar 11:19am crateslinger:

Mustard factory is on Berry and S 5th, but I don't know about this. Was it a party? I remember Cat's Head parties but that was earlier.
11:20am neil who is WILD, man:

I think I saw part of one in Thompkins Sqare park...people were dragging stuff on the ground making noise, lots of homeless folks,....late 80's maybe...never stuck around for the fire, but that was their MO I heard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am annie:

cecile, it's worth a double-viewing, actually.. MK was great!
11:20am neil who is WILD, man:

@Crateslinger-YES CATS HEAD people were involved in this...
Avatar 11:21am Cecile:

That guy has always been great. he was a great Batman, the movies were just lousy.
Avatar 11:21am crateslinger:

Okay, yeah I know about it then. Sort of remember something. I was pretty drunk.
Avatar 11:24am crateslinger:

NY has changed, but I still love it. I just said it sucks cuz that's what I'm supposed to say as an old salt, right? I graduated from throwing bottles at cops in Tompkins Square park to appreciating artisinal cabbage in Brooklyn. Don't really miss getting hit in the head with pipes or having guns pulled on my in traffic disputes. New York's alright.
  11:24am Dean:

Heh, passed up a used Brave Combo LP yesterday, two bucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am annie:

i just saw an ad for some superman/"other superhero" battle movie.. crickey
  11:25am DaveinPA:

What hath God wrought?
  11:25am Dean:

But I did grab a Barry Goldwater campaign LP. Alas, no "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Whosondephone:

Oh No!
Avatar 11:26am Cecile:

I think it's Batman. And Aquaman is SMOKING HOT. I have a thing for Aquaman. Don't judge me.
11:26am neil who is WILD, man:

NY is AMAZING. Full of really aware, smart people. And in Brooklyn there is more SPACE to exist than in The City. That's my memory anyway...
Avatar 11:26am Cecile:

there probably will not be enough Aquaman in there for me.
  11:27am sinuendo:

Tiny Tim had a ska album?
11:27am neil who is WILD, man:

He only needs about ten more or so.....! BBB songs that is....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mike East:

Isn't the Batman/Superman movie an intro to get the Superfriends together and start a franchise so DC can compete with the Avengers?
Avatar 11:28am crateslinger:

it's fucking expensive tho; thank god we're all rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mike East:

Haven't really seen much in theaters this year, but I plan to see Star Wars tomorrow morning.
Avatar 11:29am Cecile:

I have no problem with the Justice League convening.

Also, I have to elaborate - I'm speaking about Viking Metal Aquaman - with the long hair and beard and the hook for a hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am annie:

that's funny, my toddler/youth memories are way too cool of brooklyn. .. i couldn't find the site of the hospital where i spent a third of my life up to 7 or so...but i still have a soft spot..
Avatar 11:30am crateslinger:

Hugh Glass, the guy from Revenant is illustrated on the album cover of Scissorfight's album "Balls Deep". They also wrote a song called "Stove by Whale" about the Essex disaster, so there are two Scissorfight movies out right now.
Avatar 11:30am V Priceless:

Black Panther looks cool too - supposed to debut in the next Capt America installment...
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

Althought Hot Samoan/Hawaiian Aquaman with a hook hand is also acceptable.
Avatar 11:31am crateslinger:

Brooklyn is incredible. I am only now getting to know it really.
Avatar 11:31am V Priceless:

I bet Aquaman sleeps with the fishes
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

I loved it when The Hudlin Brothers wrote the comic about Ororo's and T'Challa's wedding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am annie:

i wouldn't mind spending a week there now as an older 60+ adult, i bet i'd like it..
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

hahhahha, VP.

that Captain America movie is also going to be amazing. I loved the last one. Real fight scenes, no cutting away.

i will always have a secret craving to be a NY-er, y'know, a real city slicker. when i go there i pretend i've lived there all my life

Too bad no one has recorded a version with Thomas Pynchon's lyrics: Got a hardon in my fist/don't be pissed/ Re-enlist/ Snap to Slothrop/ Jackson I don't give a fuck/Just give me my Ruptured duck/ Snap to Slothrop/ No one here can love or comprehend me/ They just look for someplace else to send me/ Tap my head and mike my brain/ Stick that needle in my vein/ Slothrop, snap to!

Annie if you're from here then you're more new yorker than I. I can put on an accent when ordering lumber or dealing with a trucker, but I am just a white boy from Massachusetts when you get right down to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Mike East:

@Cecile - I'm sure you're rich enough already if you don't mind living with 3 or 4 roommates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am annie:

in my mid-20s, i spent a lot of time there; stayed with my aunt in the bronx.. rode the train everywhere, went to the lincoln center.. it was a blast! fell in love with my cousin. it was all innocent, nut we felt we fit like a glove personality-wise. i loved those days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am annie:

chock-full-o'-nuts!!! 'NEM were the days!
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

Yeah, Mike East, not so much.

My kids are new yorkers. Son calls me a hick. Daughter thinks I'm insensitive to gender issues, but she still tells all her friends I knew Joey Ramone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Mike East:

@Cecile - its what I keep telling my wife when she forgets why we had to let go of my sweet Brooklyn apt. when we got married.
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

crates, I think the rule is if you can live there 2-3 years, you're a New Yorker. For me, I will never be a Minneapolitan, but if I had kids, they would be. It's weird.

Brooklyn is so huge and varied. Southern Brooklyn has so many people from all over the world -- Mexicans, Uzbeks, Chinese, Russians, Turkish, and many more, and still lots of Italians and some Poles too. Just walking around is always fascinating, but I had to search assiduously to find an affordable apt.

I just moved from Minneapolis to Lancaster County, PA. I lived in Minneapolis for 5 years and although I loved it, it was never going to be my home. I am not from PA, but my partner is, and it feels more home-like already! I am from FL originally. That was too much 411, alas.

I lived in NYC from 1989 until 1994-ish. For the arts such as music and visual arts there is no beating it for variety of stuff to do....Dropped out/burned out of Cooper Union Architecture school.....
Avatar 11:48am nathaxn walker:

Cecile - That is my experience too! There isn't as much 'to do' here as in MPLS by far, for us or the kids, but it makes up for it by having the kids' school like literally in our backyard and everyone is extremely personable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Whosondephone:

I have grown to love Mpls, and I have some great friends there, but with very few exceptions, they are all out-of-towners or natives who had things happen to them that made them somehow different.

Avatar 11:50am crateslinger:

There was a great crusty scene in minneapolis in the 80s and early 90s. It was like a sister city to NYC. Kind of reminded me of Seattle.

Avatar 11:51am nathaxn walker:

The parks in MLPS are unparallelled, as are the libraries! they have such a great public library system! I might miss that the most! Crust is still alive & well in MPLS!
