I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good evening, Mayuko and all!

Mayuko:

Happy holidays and happy new year, Dave B! james! Thanks for tuning in!
  5:09pm
Dave B:

This riff reminds me of Joe Jackson (Do The) Instant Mash
Avatar 5:15pm
Mayuko:

I don't know that song, Dave B, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was exactly the original they "borrowed" idea from. That's how things were in 70's Japan, I think!
  5:25pm
Dave B:

No it wasn't exact. Just the cadence and structure kind of reminded me of it.... Keep on doin' what you're doin'!!!

Is anyone else having problems with the playlist? I can't see what I'm typing ...
  5:44pm
Dave B:

I'm on the mobile app, and it crashed hard after my first comment, but since then.... ROCK SOLID!! \m/ (>_<) \m/
Avatar 5:45pm
Mayuko:

oh no, Carmichael! Do you mean there's nothing shown in this little box where you type?
Avatar 5:49pm
Carmichael:

That's right, Mayuko. And the playlist won't scroll or refresh. I'm using IE11. on my iPhone, it looks fine.

That "S.Y.P.H." you mentioned might be pronounced "siff," rhyming with "GIF." They may have been going for the first four letters of "syphilis."

Cool that you got to enjoy the view your parents saw all that time ago! I wanted to go up in the Willis Tower when I visited Chicago for work, but I had all my luggage with me and there was nowhere to stash it.
  6:03pm
Dave B:

Listener James.... I was trying to figure out if it was some sort of acronym, but there are no German words that begin with Y
  6:03pm
Dave B:

Hope you had a fun time in Chicago Mayuko!

I go to Chicago for New Year's almost every year, and I have never been up in that tower. I should have a look sometime.

. . .and hello Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The tower must have been brand new in 1974. I visited it in1991 or so. I stayed around home here for Christmas, but rode the train to NYC on Saturday and strolled through Central Park.

And as soon as I find an alternate side parking spot, 大掃除 begins at home!

Oosouji is more than just cleaning and organizing in a physical sense. It carries with it a state of mind. Creating order out of chaos can be good for the soul, so can letting go of unwanted things.

There was a point in um 1979 where I found myself, a 19 year old sailor, in the enlisted mans club on the joint Navy Base at Yokuska watching a band of local teengers nail a perfect rendition of Iron Butterfly's Inna-Gadda-da Vida.
I went to the Sears tower in 1998 when I went to visit my sister in Chicago after my nephew was born. The only two tall buildings I've ever been up were the Sears tower and the Tokyo tower
Avatar 6:22pm
Mayuko:

And good evening, steve! Polyus, thank you for tuning in! I liked Chicago, although I don't think I got to see much since my stay was only weekend. Christmas decoration was pretty. What is it like there for New Year?

Those observation boxes have a big NOPE written all over them....

james, I didn't get to see really the landscape because it was so foggy, haha.

Mayuko:

Ken, was there that glass box thing with see through floor in 1991? Even though I had almost no view that was still freaking scary.
  6:25pm
Dave B:

Those boxes were a recent addition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko. Those boxes were just added four or five years ago.
  6:28pm
Dave B:

2009 or so...
Avatar 6:29pm
Mayuko:

whoa, paul b! So you were actually there in that time and seen what it was like! I'm just assuming it all from my parent's stories and music from that time and stuff. And that's great that you've been to Tokyo Tower. I loved that tower.
  6:36pm
Dave B:

Makes me long for the old WTC Observation deck.... Got stuck in a freight elevator there back around 87 or so.
Avatar 6:36pm
Mayuko:

Dave B, I'm gonna do osouji although it was supposed to be done earlier I think. I also miss the 108 bell banging.
Avatar 6:37pm
Mayuko:

... and what happened after that, Dave B!? How long did it take for you to get out of that elevator?!
  6:37pm
Dave B:

ITS NEVER TOO LATE! And my neighbors will love the 108 bell loop I have ready.... My amp goes to 11
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, 2009, I see now. I heard the CN tower in Toronto has a glass floor in part of its observation deck. Imagine the vertigo!
Avatar 6:39pm
glenn:

yes, it does have a glass floor.
  6:39pm
Dave B:

PRAY vertigo doesn't make me dizzy!
Avatar 6:40pm
Mayuko:

OMG That is so cool, Dave B!!!!!
  6:41pm
Dave B:

And Space Needle (I think) has that tethered walk around the perimeter...

No thanks

p.s. - this song is excellent!
Avatar 6:41pm
Mayuko:

Ah, Ken, I should try that glass floor when I make it to Toronto! Toronto is long overdue place for me to visit! and hallo, glenn, welcome on board!
Avatar 6:47pm
glenn:

it's maybe 1500 feet above the ground, so that might influence your decision.
  6:48pm
Listener142985:

Oh yeah! Here come the '80s! Love this stuff.
  6:49pm
Dave B:

It's a sample of a lotus bell. I'm not sure if the timing is accurate, but it sounds for the last minute or two of the old, the last timed to sound on the new...
Avatar 6:50pm
Mayuko:

glenn, I guess I'll see. Willis tower was already bad enough for me! Listener142985, I love this song too!

Thanks and happy new year Mayuko! DJ ALF, an insanely talented DJ and regular contributor to Billy Jam's show, spent some time in Japan and really stepped up when the Fukushima disaster hit. Maybe you should talk with him
Avatar 1:05am
Mayuko:

Happy new year to you too, fred! I'll look into Billy Jam's archives to find him, I wonder if he lives in NJ/NYC? By the way I got Blue Sabbath Black Fiji, & I LOVE it. Thanks for the recommendation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
fred:

I think he lives in Baltimore, but he's a longtime friend of Billy. I thought about him because you talked about bases and he was stationed in Okinawa (I found that out because I thought a track of his had that unique rhythm so I asked him about it)
I'm really happy that you like Blue Sabbath Black Fiji, especially now as they had close ties to an artist space that just closed its doors. It lives on in a way
Avatar 9:04am
Mayuko:

Oh I see. I'd be very curious to hear what it was like to be stationed in Okinawa!
