@Joe: enjoying every step of the slow climb. Great start!

If I close my eyes tight, I can imagine a wintry, snowy scene outdoors instead of the green grass and warmth of December, 2015, in upstate NY.

A song about a man and his pillow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thuh Blooz: Formally, almost nothing - emotionally & meaning-wise, just about everything.
  9:57am Brendan:

Or his teddy bear , point is , he wakes up and she weren't there! When he wakes up the nightmare begins. He was romancing the pillow! That is one scary campfire story.
  9:59am P-90:

Agreed, Joe. Every show the week of Christmas doesn't HAVE to be a "Christmas show" to feel just right. This show's been more special than most "specials."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Santos L. Halper:

lovely x1,000,000 thank you for making the solstice worth coming into work for.
Avatar 10:08am northguineahills:

That keyboard was instantly recognizable as Sun Ra, but it's rare to hear a flute solo w/ the arkestra, (although anything can happen w/ them).

The Sounds of the Middle Passage!
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

@Listener Robert: Yes, I think winter will come in the last hour today.
Avatar 10:18am Joe McG:

This Romano Rizzati is sort of like a very cool, beatnik Carol of the Bells, no?
Avatar 10:19am OTB:

Carol of the Elevator?
  10:21am Listener Robert:

Actually I'd rather not be reminded of winter, but if it has to come, let it come musically, thanks.
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@OTB: Yes, that'll do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am sphere:

this reminds me of Manhattan Transfer. i bet the Transfer are prime for rediscovery in 2030.
  10:23am Listener Robert:

I learned on Sat. that Yule was originally celebrated not so near solstice, but some weeks later when the lengthening of daylight was clearly noticeable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Parq:

Morning, Joe. Having my morning joe. Wait, Annie Ross isn't on this song? Never knew that. It's a classic nonetheless.

Mr G Peterson has his own radio show every saturday on the bbc 6 around 3pm . this gentleman was the owner and creator ( among other things ) of the Talkin' Load label . the Wfmu and the radio show I mentioned are musical my corner stone !
  10:39am nEIL cOMMA wILD:

Thank you for playing Edwin Birdsong. Obscure but awesome!
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Julieta: Thanks so much for the info! I know he's been on the radio for sometime but I know him more through his compilations than his show. @nEIL: You bet! (I love the part where he tells the black guitarist and the white guitarist to play at the same time.)
  10:41am Brendan:

What a romantic song about Fettucine
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

"Killing Him Softly," I mean.
Avatar 10:47am Cecile:

was this the theme to Playboy after dark?
Avatar 10:48am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Yes, but I think it was originally called "Uptown Penthouse" or something, out of Chicago. I may be misremembering the title, but it was in B&W and had plenty of jazz people of the day on it.
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

Playboy's Penthouse or Playboy After Dark were the titles.
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

Ah, thanks. I wonder if what became "Penthouse" magazine was referencing that show with a wink.

@ Joe-can you play something that was super popular on WFMU back in 1992?
Avatar 11:03am Cecile:

I like this better than Exile's. It's weird, but the disco version is less slimy than the country-ish version.
Avatar 11:03am Joe McG:

@nEIL: I'm going to play a Stereolab 45 next week. Does that count?
  11:04am nEIL cOMMA wILD:

  11:20am JakeGould:

I’m with you on winter to an extent. If the days are shorter and the sun sets earlier in the day, I want the weather to match the daylight span. If you give me bright, sunny, warm days in “winter” I will eat them up but they are disconcerting to experience nonetheless.
