Options November 18, 2015: Special Guest: David Garland

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player! | Add or read comments

David Garland has been an active composer, multi-instrumentalist
and singer since the 1980s; his songs are tuneful, experimental,
and heartfelt. His new music is inspired by a unique guitar, playing
with proportion, and by the evocative landscapes of upstate New York.
Many WFMU listeners know Garland as the host of WNYC's
eclectic Spinning On Air, which ran for nearly 30 years.

Hi Irwin and David from cloudy Upstate NY.
  3:07pm Listening Out There:

Looking forward to today's show & special guest....
Avatar 3:07pm Roberto:

This sounds a bit like the Duran Duran of Death Metal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Parq:

This is EODM? Wow, sounds way different than the stuff of theirs that I know, "I Only Want You" and like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Parq:

Ah. I see what you did there, as the kids say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm AnAnonymousParty:

Thumbs up for the show so far.
Avatar 3:17pm V Priceless:

hey Irwin!
  3:18pm Laura L:

Hello and how do, Irwin & David Garland!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay Coltrane!
Avatar 3:20pm Jeff:

References everywhere in Irwin's playlist... Dakar calls to mind the PARIS-to-Dakar rally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Afternoon, Irwin & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Carmichael:

Joining in the howdies.
  3:24pm Jeff in HI:

Good morning :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm officina:

Good grey afternoon, Irwin. Wonderful show.....
Any chance we will find out from David G. why his amazing show got axed from the evil WNYC?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Carmichael:

Gomez and Morticia would likely dance to this number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Webhamster Henry:

Muriel's Treasure is in the house.
  3:34pm berbo:

The Adames would probably appreciate this number as well.
  3:37pm Listening Out There:

I second Officina's question! I'd add "Will you do a regular show on WFMU, maybe? Kinda like Stochastic Hit Parade/A440"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Carmichael:

What makes the pictured guitar "unique"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm AnAnonymousParty:

That song reminded me of when Herbie Mann asked me to join his band when I was 17/18.
3:50pm Oh baby its a wild, wild Neil:

Hi Irwin, you rock, you have rocked for years now. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bill Evans & Eric Dolphy. Interesting. Oh Jazz - you rich & bottomless thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Webhamster Henry:

David did a Cocktail Hour in the 90s.
  4:03pm Listening Out There:

Jimi Hendrix also benefited greatly from having a tinkerer...
4:03pm Oh baby its a wild, wild Neil:

Reminds me of a Sitar what he is describing...
4:05pm Oh baby its a wild, wild Neil:

Now that he has disclosed this, it may be hard to patent...it might be better is he simply starts MAKING and SELLING them....as "the original" something something guitar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jimi had Roger Mayer - who had done secret work w/ radar for the British Navy or something...
  4:11pm Laura L:

Wonderful to hear David--making me regret I have to leave in 30 min. for an event--will catch up on archive what I miss today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Read 'bolus' in 'The Right Stuff' - when the astronauts eat peppers to spite the doctors who mess w/ them. 2nd time I've heard used now...
  4:25pm paula pc:

what David is playing and saying is just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm common:

like that record title.
Avatar 4:32pm Jeff:

Did he say (Charlotte) Kemp Muhl was singing with him?

She's been at WFMU, too...

  4:32pm Listener Robert:

Wow, that bit about Odin came just as I'm taking a break from proofreading a friend's book, "The Norse Gods and Their Myths".
  4:37pm Andy the painter:

what a great surprise to hear david garland's voice on the radio again.
maybe "spinning on air" can come to the give the drummer stream?
that would be a treat.
Avatar 4:40pm dale:

then it would be spinning in a stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Carmichael:

Give the Drummer Some Spin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...put very much in mind of Incredible String Band - which I appreciate...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Parq:

Does Mr. Garland have a dee-jay set up in his home upstate? Would be yet another addition to Doug's world wide network of jerry-rigged home studios.
  4:53pm Listener Robert:

Dale, the more I think about it, the more I like "Spinning In A Stream" as a show name -- evoking a fish lure. Luring in listeners. Hey, he does use reels, doesn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm (Eyepatch) Fox:

Spinning Up Stream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Webhamster Henry:

You can also see David's leaf and flower photography associated with his Facebook identity.
Avatar 5:04pm Jeff:

Irwin's guest David Garland in the studio just minutes ago:

  5:17pm Tommy:

Indeed, David Garlean opened my ears on many occasions over the years. Thanks for having him on Irwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Webhamster Henry:

Vashti Bunyan ... right?
  5:35pm Pig Eon:

Heard some very interesting John Zorn pieces at the Twyla Tharp 50th Anniversary last night at Lincoln Center. Just tuning in at work, Irwin. Sounding great per usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm common:

bow wow wow. my day is complete.
  5:42pm Nosmo King:

Who else was "New Romantic" besides Bow Wow Wow and Adam and the Ants?
  5:45pm Dean:

Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet... Never considered BWW "New Romantic," though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Carmichael:

BWW was Burundi Beat, I was thinking.
  5:51pm Listening Out There:

Tee-Wif-Ic drummer on the Freddie Redd. It sounds like Roy Haynes, but probably isn't...
Avatar 5:52pm Claw!:

  5:53pm Jack:

The best radio! Thanks Irwin. This was special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

' Opening tune from Redd's "The Music From The Connection" album. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1960. Freddie Redd Quartet: Freddie Redd (piano); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Michael Mattos (bass); Larry Ritchie (drums). '
  5:53pm C:
