Hail Diane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Rich in Washington:

'ello, Diane, fellow Kamikazes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh no. Word is Phil 'filthy animal' Taylor of Motorhead has passed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Today's Kamikaze Fun Machine is brought to you courtesy of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bulwinkle J. Moose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Rich in Washington:

Dunno if it's true, but am seeing references to Phil Taylor of Motorhead having passed away.
I hope not.
Avatar 12:08pm Polyus:

I heard that as well Rev. RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Rich in Washington:

Ah, RRNov63 is on it!
Avatar 12:12pm Polyus:

I just saw some terrible Behind The Music thing on Motorhead that he was in the other night. Took my by surprise, hadn't heard anything about him for years.
  12:13pm josh:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Man - no one ever looked more perfectly the part then him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Andrew Waterloo:

That first grainy shot of fill playing in the Ace of Spades is basically my earliest memory of Rock 'n Roll
Avatar 12:23pm MenfussMike:

it was about 1983/84 when MTV turned me onto the best band they would ever turn me on to. They played the video to One Track Mind and I was hooked. Phil was cool and played like no one else.
Avatar 12:25pm Cecile:

RIP Philthy

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bittersweet circumstances to hear these Motörhead songs, but they really hit the spot. RIP Phil.
  12:35pm Chucktown Dan:

3 hours of this I hope . Thanx Diane ....
Avatar 12:36pm Chris from DC:

Aw man, just heard.
Avatar 12:39pm MenfussMike:

GRATE choices of tuneage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm coelacanth:

Thank you Diane.
r.i.p. Animal.
Avatar 12:47pm Cecile:

I have a soft spot for the first one too. With Larry Wallis.
Avatar 12:49pm MenfussMike:

YEA "On Parole" was fantastic, but Lemmy doesn't really consider it official Motorhead
Avatar 12:49pm Cecile:

You got Lost Johnny, too?
  12:51pm Dean:

Love, love, love Motorhead, and yet this 12" is the only item of theirs I have.

Was Lemmy reading Saussure when they recorded "On Parole"?
Avatar 12:54pm Cecile:

Here is my Philthy story:
Went to see Motorhead in '83 with Brian Robertson on guitar. They were all coked to the gills. It was nuts.
For the encore, Phil stumbled out rubbing his nose with the back of his hand. He sat there staring at the setlist. Then a roadie ran his finger down the playlist and pointed to the song he was supposed to be playing next, like he was showing a little kid. He still played great, though.
Avatar 12:55pm Diane Kamikaze:

Hey All! What can I say? The worst news, but at least I am on the air... @Cecile, Phil didn't drum on the ON Parole version of Lost Johnny, which is all I've got here...
Avatar 12:56pm Cecile:

oh, ok.
Avatar 12:57pm MenfussMike:

Phil took over the stool from Lucas Fox I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good one, Cecile!
Avatar 12:57pm Diane Kamikaze:

That's exactly right, MM. LF only has drumming credits on the song Lost Johnny from the On Parole collection
Avatar 1:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

WAH, people. Just got here. Fellow worshipper of th'Motör. Behold. wah again.
Avatar 1:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Saw 'em just once. 1991. Operation Rock & Roll tour, Weedsport NY. Majestic.
Avatar 1:02pm Cecile:

saw 'em in 83 and 84, and once in the late 90s for 1/2 a second walking through the 1st avenue main room to the street from the entry.
Avatar 1:03pm Cecile:

Orgasmatron. I think Orgasmatron would be a great choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coelacanth:

thta's not Phil though,is it?
Avatar 1:04pm Cecile:

oh, right. Oy. this has not been a great day for me today.
Avatar 1:05pm Cecile:

it would still be cool to her it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Stevel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm coelacanth:

(it's maybe my favorite motorhead song Cecile!)
Avatar 1:06pm Cecile:

and don't forget the joker!
  1:07pm Dean:

Got a promo of this LP for review when it was first released. Played it, loved it...sold it! Such a dufus.
Avatar 1:08pm MenfussMike:

never got to see Phil. Had tix to see them open for Alice circa 1987 but they got busted at customs or some bullshit. Announcer came over the P.A. and said "Motorhead will not be playing tonight but we have a great new local band performing instead Tora Tora" My friend and I were gutted. We had even made a Motorhead banner out of a bed sheet. Took hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Stevel:

Driving home late one night, I tried an experiment. I listened to Ace Of Spades at least 23 times in a row (thank you CD player) and did NOT tire of it. Not even a little.
Avatar 1:09pm Cecile:

my sister said she hated the song because she heard the song once a week for years. I was all "are you related to me?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Rich in Washington:

The classic lineup of Motorhead is my spirit animal. No wonder I felt 1/3 less spirited this morning.
Avatar 1:09pm Cheyenne:

Taking me back to high school... I used to BLAST Motorhead to get the good enlarger in photo class, because nobody else liked 'em. A suitable tribute though! RIP Phil!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm coelacanth:

motörhead always brings good comments out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Sue P.:

Wait..there are ppl who don't like Motorhead?
Avatar 1:11pm Cecile:

yeah, it's sad. We should do a telethon for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm crateslinger:

1985 - Albany, NY - VFW Hall.
Cro-Mags / Bad Brains / Motorhead.
Never recovered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm coeläcanth:

they're not really people!
Avatar 1:12pm Cheyenne:

Well, @Sue P, this was Kentucky in the 90s we're talking about here.. I like to think I was doing missionary work
  1:12pm Dean:

Unrelated to Phil, but hanging outside my office is a clipping from a music newspaper of a story with headline, "Lemmy feels effect of age," juxtaposed with the AARP card the org'n sends me to coax me to join.
Avatar 1:12pm Cecile:

at WCBN I remember our music director at the time actually being surprised that he liked best of set from the mid 80s. He previewed the records for people, and said "yeah, here's a Motorhead best of, and weird enough, it was good!" Everyone laughed. I got my hands on it for the review, and he was surprised that I was that excited about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Rich in Washington:

it seems like I discovered Motorhead at a time where it seemed like punk had - for me - lost all vitality. I had been more or less a snob about heavy metal up to a point, but Motorhead knocked me clean off the fence.
Avatar 1:13pm Cecile:

for a lot of punks, Motorhead was the one metal band they liked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Sue P.:

...but Motorhead is the distillation of the most simple and pure form of rock. What's not to like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth:

i think in my high school, which was not a small one, there were 7 people who liked motörhead. (4 boys & 3 girls)
Avatar 1:15pm Cecile:

I don't know! I don't get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth:

Cecile @1:13,that was me.
  1:17pm Chucktown Dan:

Well , I just blew my 12x4 stack hooked to my stereo .
  1:17pm Dean:

I remember buying the 12", the one I still have, during the punk heyday, 1977 or so. It might as well have been punk to me, but I knew the lineage, too: Hawkwind, Pink Fairies. Everything about the group was right, starting with the name.
Avatar 1:18pm Cecile:

I learned about them from Trouser Press in '79, but didn't hear them until four years later, and I was in love at first note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Watch your health, Lemmy, please. Give us a few more years, at least, until we have to do this again.
Avatar 1:20pm Martin (Marty on the weekends):

working from home today and BLASTING this!!!
Avatar 1:20pm MenfussMike:

Phil was my 2nd favorite member of the band, followed by Brian Robertson, Fast Eddie and Wurzel.
Avatar 1:21pm Cecile:

just favorited this whole show.
Avatar 1:22pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:23pm MenfussMike:

was 1916 the last GREAT Motorhead album?
  1:24pm FC:

The One to Sing the Blues really shows his power.
  1:26pm Don S:

at a time like this there is no other place i should be. sitting by the radio listening to this show.
Avatar 1:26pm Cecile:

AC/DC's groove is like a locomotive.
Motorhead's groove is like water coming out of a firehose
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

AC/DC are HighGainBlooz. Motorhead - like an Iron Engine; very important bridge between Metal & Punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if you mean a hose they try & stop a riot w/, I get it...
Avatar 1:29pm Cecile:

but not beholden to either one. that's why they are great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm common:

bummer. nice tribute
Avatar 1:30pm Cecile:

yes. That's exactly what I mean revrab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Stevel:

Avatar 1:32pm Whooda:

I was always afeared of listening to Motorhead though this desensitizing therapy is working real good. thanks Kamicause
Avatar 1:34pm PKNY:

Just got back from lunch to see the news and the playlist. The guys after Filthy might have been great drummers, but none have his feel. The fills in "Iron Fist", the double-bass in "Overkill"...so so great.
Avatar 1:35pm Cecile:

good choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm MD:

R.I.P 'filthy animal'
Avatar 1:36pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:36pm MenfussMike:

  1:37pm FC:

via Wikipedia: March or Die features three drummers: Taylor, Tommy Aldridge, who occasionally played with Ozzy Osbourne, and King Diamond's Mikkey Dee, who would join the band
Avatar 1:37pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

OK. Finally bolted into the seat with headphones. This has been a mighty goddamned playlist so far. Please be encouraged to carry this on ....
Avatar 1:41pm PKNY:

@FC - I've seen recent live clips of Motorhead doing "Iron Fist", and Mikkey Dee just plays it straight, kinds sucks the life out of the song for me. The OG though...soon as I hear the Lemmy bass, I just want to turn it the F up!
Avatar 1:43pm Cecile:

Phil played around the beat a lot.
Avatar 1:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 1:44pm Cecile:

he played fast but wasn't a metronome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

For one thing - Trios are Kewl. Each must fill more space.
It sounds like he's keeping a pretty simple regular beat - but so do the pistons of the largest Harley Davidson or Assault Tank. He is *beautifully* regular - & everything is hit so hard - *everything* - each & every time. The pace is sometimes pretty fast - & the duration of the force staggering. The fills are precise - yet brutal; all the more effective for their economy...
Avatar 1:47pm MenfussMike:

My friend, who I went to see Motorhead with in 87 only to be disappointed in their no show, is playing 2 hours of Motorhead on his program "First Church of Rock" sunday at noon c.s.t www.wevl.org Memphis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ah - & you're making a case for his swing. Okay: there's more than one piston...
Avatar 1:48pm Cecile:

will it be archived, Mike?
  1:49pm Dean:

"Trios are Kewl." The Dogs, "Slash Your Face." 'nuff said.
Avatar 1:49pm MenfussMike:

lemmy check
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm paul b:

All this Motorhead is making me think of a friend I used to know at U. Maryland back in the eighties, Randi Schaffer. She was a big Voivod fan too for that matter. I think I saw a Battalion of Saints gig with her. Used a Crown Royal bag as a purse on occasions. Hope you're listening out there Randi.
Avatar 1:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Must confess this is the first time I've clicky-starred an entire show. Very worthy.
Avatar 1:57pm Cecile:

ha, the Crown Royal bag! The gamers I knew used those for dice bags for D&D back in the day
Avatar 1:57pm MenfussMike:

@cecile. No archive "station does not have the resources"
  1:58pm Dean:

Drink enough and Thursday is an anagram of Motorhead.
Avatar 1:58pm Cecile:

damn. Maybe I can try and catch it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How much is it to buy an hour off of Fabio? Trying to imagine what a Motörhead cover of "Mister Giant Man" would sound like.
  2:01pm Don S:

a request if you can. I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man (Live), b-side of Shine 12".
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

yes! It was. I have that version, too.
Avatar 2:02pm PKNY:

@Diane - see, I though that Pete Gill played on all the 'new' songs that were on "No Remorse".
Avatar 2:02pm MenfussMike:

amen. not a stinker in the bunch
Avatar 2:03pm Cecile:

internet releases are fine - if they are as consistent as motorhead records
  2:04pm Dean:

I'll never forget Lemmy's appearance on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

Come to think of it, I have forgotten it.
Avatar 2:04pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:05pm MenfussMike:

Lemmy was on Mr. Rogers?!?!?!
  2:06pm r i s k y:

Avatar 2:06pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:06pm Cecile:

play it again.
  2:07pm Dean:

From the Lemmy interview hanging outside my office:
Q: You used to sneer at death, song after song.
LK: Yeah, well, I've been in the hospital twice this year. So I understand it a bit better now.

[Was joking, MenfussMike.]
Avatar 2:07pm MenfussMike:

Fred Rogers and Lemmy Kilmister.....neither ever sold out.
  2:07pm Some Chris:

Finally getting high on your own supply (of Motorhead), eh?
Avatar 2:08pm Cecile:

I'll have to revisit 1916. It was so over-hyped by people who didn't like Motorhead but liked that one that I was quite disappointed hearing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Awlright! ...Off to take a pee test in his honor ! Hah.
- Thank You Diane.

- & Thank You Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor
Born: September 21, 1954 (age 61), Hasland, United Kingdom
Died: November 12, 2015
Avatar 2:11pm Diane Kamikaze:

Thanks @PKNY, I didn't realize that. I never liked Killed by Death anyway, I think that was the other one...
Avatar 2:13pm Cecile:

I liked Killed by Death.
Avatar 2:15pm PKNY:

"Killed By Death" is better than that Motorhead song that sounds like "Unskinny Bop" that I hear on satellite radio every now and again.
Avatar 2:15pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:17pm Cecile:

god, poison were awful apart from "talk dirty to me"
Avatar 2:18pm Cecile:

damn, this was a great motorhead lineup
Avatar 2:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Clearly my turntable playlist is sorted out for this evening.
  2:24pm Don S:

Avatar 2:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've ended up with a deeply disturbing love of the BASTARDS album, which is post-Philthy, but the Taylor era is utterly infallible.
Avatar 2:25pm Cecile:

bastards is pretty damn good
Avatar 2:34pm Cecile:

damn they were good together.
  2:34pm Dean:

OT: Just read that former SubPop promotions director is pushing to make "Roadrunner" the official rock song of Massachusetts.
Avatar 2:35pm Cecile:

I think Billy Squier's Everybody Wants You should take the honor.
  2:37pm Dean:

Charles Pierce comments, parenthetically (literally): (I am surprised that Willie "Boom Boom" Alexander's "Mass. Ave" isn't getting more love, though.)
Avatar 2:38pm Cecile:

no state should have an official rock song or we will have lost.
  2:39pm Dean:

In theory, I agree. But if "Eat the Rich" were every state's official song, I'd be cool with that.
Avatar 2:40pm Cecile:

let's make that happen, Dean.
  2:40pm Neil comma Wild:

I knew Motorhead was good, but man, I had no idea they were so .....CONSISTENYLY good. My God!
Avatar 2:40pm Cecile:

I want to hear a children's choir sing "bite down like a son of a bitch"
Avatar 2:41pm Diane Kamikaze:

@Cecile: I wholeheartedly agree. I still to this day come to grips with what was my HS graduating class song. However, MAYBE it would cause all the rockers tomove to one state and we can have rocker nursing homes...
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

yes, neil. they are amazing.
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

good point, ms DK!
  2:41pm Dean:

I'll have a chat with my son's school's music program instructor...
Avatar 2:43pm Diane Kamikaze:

Ha! That post is supposed to read CANNOT come to grips with...
Avatar 2:44pm Cecile:

what was your graduation song?
Avatar 2:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Our spirited boxer pup just barely escaped being named Lemmy, 9 years ago...
  2:45pm Dean:

Yes, Diane, inquiring minds want to know. I declined to attend my HS graduation, electing work instead. Never regretted it.
Avatar 2:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

YES. Hammersmith is fully in my top three live albums in the ever-ever.
Avatar 2:51pm Cecile:

where was it underrated? It was nominated for a Grammy and every poser I knew dug it.
Avatar 2:53pm Cecile:

I mean, I'm kind of a poser, but these guys were even posier than I was!
Avatar 2:54pm Diane Kamikaze:

It was a difficult album to own up to at the time. I felt they were on the verge of going soft, and had from time to time IMHO. Today I am complete with it. I wasn't then!
Avatar 2:55pm Chris from DC:

And there it is!!!!
Avatar 2:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 2:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 2:56pm Cecile:

thanks to you I'll have to revisit it. that's always a nice thing!
Avatar 2:56pm Cecile:

you know all their songs would make good rockabilly songs. Prolly no coincidence.

Always remember. That's my motto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm MD:

Thank you Phil...Thank You Diane!

Well played my dear. Thank you.
