Any spooky music for Halloween

A tube-powered radio on a bumpy road? What could possibly go wrong?
  3:06pm wyld gneel:

Irwin, you rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In the 70s, you could probably get a CB radio for your bike. CBs were everywhere back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm common:

ha! polyus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Īke:

I found an old-timey bulb horn and I've been scaring the crap out of my cat with it. It was probably once attached to a bike like that.

I should stop. She's pretty alarmed.
  3:08pm the infected foot:

@irwin be careful of men he's got the plague and he's going to spread it around
  3:09pm the infected foot:

  3:09pm wyld gneel:

I heard CBs can only go four or five miles on a good day...by definition, that would be really local radio....by the way, Irwin can you play some old King Crimson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Irwin:

  3:09pm the infected foot:

Wow did ken sound bad this morning
  3:12pm jan:

I hope that you will post the schematics and parts list for the bike radio so that listeners who want to receive your broadcast while riding bikes can build this project. Reminds me of the Cub Scout build a radio project I completed in 1961. I'm about ready to take on the challenge once again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Alison Porchnik:

Irwin should also be careful of men. Just sayin.
Avatar 3:14pm Whooda:

Hi Irwin, I'm just a 'Merican curmudgeon that doesn't pledge to anything that doesn't promote wanton destruction of humanity and emotional trauma on the innocent. Sorry. But this New Bird is really too cool and rewarding. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The mighty internet knows all: blog.modernmechanix.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Irwin:

Look closely at the head of the bike rider. They didn't have Photoshop in those days!
Avatar 3:18pm Roberto:

Roberto ♥ Swan Dive.
Avatar 3:19pm Whooda:

OK, Irwin you got me, I forgot you played Joe Frank Files. You got my "few bucks" for this year... you, you, purveyor of wanton colonial chaos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Mike East:

I used to ride around with a transistor AM radio on my bike. I didn't wear a suit, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Irwin:

We're $275 away from this show's fundraising goal. $20 will bump the status bar 1%.
  3:24pm Jack:

Has there ever been a bad version of "Freedom Jazz Dance"? What a great song.
Avatar 3:25pm Whooda:

You got it Irwin $20. Finally! I have made it! I am one of the 1%, or at least someone like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Irwin:

Thank you, David of WV and Peter H of NYC. Will mention your names on the air next mic break.
Avatar 3:27pm Whooda:

That kid/executive bike riding terrorist is lucky he's not from the 21st century or he would be arrested for building "half a bomb"!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Irwin:

Jack: Yes! I bought a dozen or so in iTunes because I love the composition. One of them -- by a big-name jazzbo whose name escapes -- was kinda lame. Otherwise, it's almost foolproof, like Caravan.
Avatar 3:30pm Roberto:

Avatar 3:33pm Polyus:

New KJ songs have been sounding good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm ░ĪҠℰ░::

Ha ha! What dummies. Animals aren't innocent. Well, some animals might be, but not poodles. Poodles are jerks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Irwin:

The best new KJ songs sound like old KJ songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Arthur C. Miller's other invention, the beer-keg radio, would be a great novel addition to the WFMU break room or the backstage of Monty Hall.
  3:37pm Listener Robert:

Thanks, Ken from Hyde. Looks like a regenerative design. Can someone explain to me why the volume control is biasing the screen in the 1st audio stage?
  3:38pm Qwerty:

Don't cross the cop in the middle of the block.
  3:39pm Mark R:

My standard poodle is a saint, Ike. Nice to see you again, you had been absent from the comment boards (at least the ones that I was seeing).
Avatar 3:39pm Hoboken Jack:

Calvin sounds real good on such a dreary day.
  3:39pm Pablo:

Hey Irwin - thank you for all the Joe Frank!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm SeanG:

I need to listen to more Beat Happening
Avatar 3:41pm Whooda:

I am psychotic, the comments are being posted before the songs. What is this? Are you trying to make me even MORE paranoid?
  3:41pm Mark R:

I have business in Kansas City and I was on a plane with a bunch of hat-wearing Mets fans who are going to the game tonight!
Avatar 3:42pm Polyus:

Whooda, are you listening online?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Bronwyn Bishop:

The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey was great!
  3:44pm jan:

@KenfromHydepark- what a fun article. Love that the radio has a key protected switch. Easier than a password @robert- great question!
  3:46pm Listener Robert:

Actually not such a great Q, jan -- I meant the 1st RF stage, not audio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Mike East:

Kilburn Lane??!!! I had no idea that what they were saying...always thought it was Kill the line or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm rrg:

Thanks! It's been a long time since you played Blossom. I think.
Avatar 3:53pm Whooda:

@Polyus, yes, am in the public library in Hillbilly Incest, WV.
  3:54pm jan:

@Robert- I loved old radios and antique TVs but could never figure them out.
Household electrical wiring,no problem, car repair -advanced skills. I could assemble kit electronics but the operation and theory- over my head.
Avatar 3:55pm Polyus:

I listen via the app, and it always seems to be a good 45 seconds behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Parq:

I've been away from the radio for a little bit and "Don't Cross the Street" has been stuck in my head the whole time. Imagine a time when advertisers and broadcasters actually cared about the safety of kids who live in the city, and you get some idea how old that PSA is.
Avatar 3:56pm Whooda:

NO problem, we are already about 300 years behind here in Wet Wonderful (Wild) WV. What are a few more seconds here or there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

U ok there Irwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Irwin:

Aye EM hokey\e brunswynne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Irwin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm ìkƎ:

@Mark@3:39, thanks. Good to see you too. Maybe I've been commenting more at night lately.
  4:15pm Brendan:

Q. What do people from <insert target state to be butt of joke here> do for Halloween?
A. Pump kin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Carmichael:

Heya Irwin, Joe and co-bon vivants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm rsj:

she's a jersey driver, dont fight it joe, it's the new normal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I used to ride around on my bike w/ a radio - no tubes if not a tiny one...& deffo no helmet...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...probably make an interesting guitar amp w/ them tubes!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ken + Duane + Irwin = Three for three DJs meeting their goals today.
  4:26pm Listener Robert:

Why would she think the bass player masturbated a lot? Was he holding it against his crotch?
Avatar 4:31pm βrian:

Nothing wrong with being a stand-in!
Avatar 4:32pm Whooda:

@ Rpbert. probably because the bass player's slathering tongue drool and rhythmic pelvic thrusts accompanied by cross eyed distressed half-smiles on the downbeat.
Avatar 4:33pm SHAGALOV:

The story about Anne playing second time? or do I think?
  4:37pm marc15:

Joe Frank is describing the end of my relationship with my ex-boyfriend. Almost verbatim
Avatar 4:42pm Whooda:

THANKS IRWIN! congrats on making your goal. It must be nice to have goals... I needed that Joe Frank pick-me-up for the day. Peace.
Avatar 4:42pm JakeGhould:

What a happy guy!
  4:44pm Meechum:

One of the best Joe's I've heard.
  4:47pm marc15:

This Joe Frank episode is one of my favorites because it's so relatable to my last relationship
Avatar 4:53pm Whooda:

@carmichael I couldn't leave OK for CA quickly enough. Now in WV I almost remonis fondly for OK. Sacramento mid-town is getting downright nasty....what's up with that? Are the K street bars really that good or is the mall violence related to rotten local talent?
  4:54pm r i s k y:

Thank you for this Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's an outstanding exposition of the detailed & ambiguous realities & yet also the powerful enduring emotional bonds of actual relationships...even especially ones that fail.
  4:56pm Tony Seymour:

she will be reinvented for someone else.....wow...great thought......show could have ended on that line fine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Iʞe:

One of the finest Joes of all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...also - having lived in SantaBarbara, CA 16 years - where I heard Joe - the particular SoCal qualities of his stuff really resonates...
  4:58pm r i s k y:

I agree Ike, especially in a downpour, that episode was indescribably poignant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Īkℰ:

Some relationships can end and still be considered a success. Some can even fail and still be a success. Probably none of Joe's relationships, though. Heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good Ike.
...I mean seriously: I'm not especially cultured - but for all the stuff there is about romance & relationships - that Joe Frank's particularly observationally descriptive, & so moving...
Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Faustcan:

To the lovers of this Joe's story may I recommend something that I read in Russian with original title in French La Modificacion by Michel Butor. An incredibly slow but gripping unravelling of the protagonist's train journey to reunite with his mistress for good - all taking place in his head...
  5:11pm Brendan:

Heres another pretty Lazarus tune
  5:15pm Fredericks:

This Sam Rivers wonderful, Irwin. I thought it was Ayler at first. thanks for playing stuff like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm common:

wow! haven't heard this swell tune since the 90s. nice, irwin!
  5:18pm Otis Driftwood:

Rarely hear Swell played on air. Thanks for this blast from the past (90s)
  5:22pm Brendan:

Chuck channeling his inner Lou
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh - not Cream...
Avatar 5:29pm V Priceless:

  5:31pm Jack:

Cream did a version, and when I first heard this version I thought it was also Cream. But it's Mick Abrahams and crew. Great version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Irwin:

No wonder Mick quit the band. Ian wasn't going to stand for this sort of virtuoso wanking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm chris:

i don't understand what the hell is going on in this track... i'm having a wtf moment
  5:57pm Listening Out There:

Good mashup. Good program. I might listen again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Ĩkє:

Holy shmow, Nick Brooke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm chris:
