This is awesome :)
  5:07pm Pete L:

At last, REAL music!
---exquisite, thanks
  5:08pm Fifty Shades of Chicken:

I don't believe I've lived this graciously in months.
  5:10pm bill:

boy is gaylord in a groovy bag today

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello Gaylord and all you Fielders!
Avatar 5:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...never ? twice ! Glad to be here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Gaylord Fields:

Nothing but this for the next two hours!
  5:14pm JakeGould:

So do they know the elevator is broken? Someone pushed the button, right?
Avatar 5:17pm steve:

having not lived through the hayday of this (what is it called? easy listening?), im wondering where would people hear stuff like this when it was a thing? AM radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Minnesota Jeff:

's blissful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm redkayak:

When I was a kid my mom would listen to this kind of music - - we called it her "nerve music"
God knows she needed it, raising the four of us!
  5:18pm Syd:

Hiya Gaylord! Smooth sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Gaylord Fields:

Hey, Syd! Hey everyone else!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Just this, plus some pledging. Some snacks would be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm efd:

The first of several songs we'll hear today, I imagine, for which the Beautiful Music treatment was unnecessary.
  5:21pm JakeGould:

@steve: This is the stuff that pre-dated adult contemporary and then was superseded by smooth jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm efd:

@steve, when I was younger I knew it as Beautiful Music and it was usually on FM stations. In Boston WJIB was the primary station; in the NYC area I think it was WPAT, but I'm sure Gaylord could confirm/correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@efd: Yes, some of these songs were shorter journeys than others.
Avatar 5:24pm steve:

i got a great 101 Strings LP a year or two ago at Scott W's stoop sale, largely because i saw it had a cover of Macho's "I'm a Man".
Avatar 5:26pm steve:

great info... thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Minnesota Jeff:

This sounds like devil music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm dale:

thinking how beatlesque that sounded and i log in to see how that is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm redkayak:

Gaylord, play some Montovani & his orchestra!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm efd:

love the weather forecast! Perfect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm efd:

Boston's WJIB had a whole nautical theme going... their studios were on Commercial Wharf in Boston, and their station IDs included the sound of a buoy bell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm dale:

better be some mitch miller on the record changer. i don't care if it takes a nickle on the tonearm!
  5:32pm Jeff in HI:

Sounding great today! Thanks Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm dale:

my wife got pickpocketed on the uptown bus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm redkayak:

@dale mitch miller - yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm redkayak:

Now, this is root canal music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm dale:

i wonder if there was a 'wrecking crew' sort of session musicians who worked on all these easy listening albums? an fmu deejay would know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm dale:

oh man - this is up there with her jealous guy cover.
  5:38pm Listener Robert:

Steve, it was heard on both some AM & FM stations. As to where radios might be tuned to "easy listening" or "beautiful music", that might've been barber shops, waiting rooms & elevators, self service retail areas, etc. that didn't want to pay for Muzak or similar programming distributed by FM subcarriers.
  5:39pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm redkayak:

Claudine Longet! Home run!
  5:40pm Listener Robert:

Yes, WPAT-FM, but also for long periods WPAT AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm redkayak:

Skiiers, beware....
  5:40pm BriJet:

  5:41pm Listener Robert:

WVOX's FM affiliate WRTN had many hrs. of it too.
  5:43pm Listener Robert:

However, during those hrs. on WRTN, it was automated & so wouldn't've had weather anmts. I think some automated stations experimented with automated weather anmts, though.
  5:43pm JakeGould:

This sounds like Jean Naté and VapoRub.
  5:43pm P-90:

I remember WPAT well. I also remember we used to refer to this style generically as "Muzak", although that was the name of that specific company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm dale:

jake - and ayds candy.
  5:45pm bill:

  5:46pm frenchee:

I love this so much. I'm so mellow that the money is flowing right outta my pocketbook to WFMU!
  5:47pm Listener Robert:

Actually Muzak eventually got to have some pretty sophisticated music on several channels, with commissioned recordings. Yes, they actually became a recording label, although I don't know if there was any public distribution of pieces, other than via piracy.
  5:47pm P-90:

We also generically called this "elevator music" for many years.
  5:48pm JakeGould:

@dale: Soap on a Rope.
Avatar 5:48pm KP:

Happy Sunday, Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm dale:

'please hold while we connect your call.......'
  5:49pm frenchee:

Irish Spring, @JakeGould, @dale
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm redkayak:

It's frightening to realize how many of these titles I remember....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm dale:

english leather soap on a rope.
  5:50pm JakeGould:

Brüt… By Menin…
  5:51pm JakeGould:

Like EFD said, this “Grazing in the Grass” was unnecessary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm dale:

anyone who can type an uumlaat (sp) thing wins!
Avatar 5:52pm glenn:

because i like it too.
  5:53pm frenchee:

I want a traffic report next, please. How are the flights out of Idlewild? Flushing Airport? haaaaaa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm dale:

this HAS to be many of the same singers from sing along with mitch and so many other 'groups.' i smell a tell-all expose in the making.
  5:54pm P-90:

I think I remember reading years ago that there was a "Wrecking Crew" of sorts that did a lot of the Muzak stuff, I think it said there were actually a lot of professional symphony musicians who moonlighted on their tracks.
  5:55pm frenchee:

"Nerve music" is the perfect name though we *mistakenly* called it Muzak too.
It became less amusing when they covered Neil Young.
  5:55pm BriJet:

I love this music so much! :P
Avatar 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dale: Umlauts: www.nthuleen.com...
  5:58pm P-90:

Those were the days- a $10 prescription and 20 cents change back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm dale:

oh, that looks like a lot of work on a pc. i used to be a graphic designer and still get annoyed when I see incorrect fi, fl, ffi and ffl ligatures. don't get me started on folks using foot or inch marks for quotation marks.
  6:00pm frenchee:

I bow down low to you, O Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A dude at work died from walking pneumonia some years ago. He seemed fine when I last saw him. The next week, folks said he had passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm redkayak:

Kicking out the jams now :)
  6:02pm jonathan:

I've heard orchestral arrangements of I am the Walrus and Magic Bus. Some wiseass must have been making those choices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm dale:

the drummer on this something in the air is ripping it a new one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm dale:

if only the living voices and living marimbas got together to jam...
  6:03pm P-90:

  6:04pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Gaylord Fields:

@bill: 100% mine!!! And I've got a WHOLE lot more!
  6:06pm P-90:

Maybe Tommy Tedesco on that Mission Impossible guitar solo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm redkayak:

Any Dylan? Jefferson Airplane?
  6:06pm V Priceless:

Hi Gaylord! Swell sounds!
  6:06pm bill:

  6:08pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm dale:

liberace's cover of crown of creation is not half bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Gaylord Fields:

A few I paid $$ for; most no more than a dollar. This is going back 30-plus years, mind you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm dale:

just did an image search for mitch miller's tv show - every guy in the chorus looks like fred mertz
  6:12pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@bill: Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: And a few of the women.
  6:13pm JakeGould:

@dale: That’s because they were all Fred Mertz.
  6:13pm DL in LA:

It's so trippy hearing some of this stuff on WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm dale:

you made me do a spit take of gin and tonic gaylord!
  6:14pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm dale:

DL - you don't listen to the station enough if this seems unusual to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm dale:

michel polnareff would not be too displeased.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm dale:

or did sandie shaw record it first?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm redkayak:

The Hump. Alright!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: Raymond Lefevre's version of Polnareff's "Ame Caline" is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm dale:

my mother got equally giddy over englebert and bobby vinton. if there's one hip song by the polish prince - gaylord knows it.
  6:25pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm redkayak:

Yep.....my folks had some Percy Faith LP's as I recall.....Got any Perry Como, Gaylord?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm dale:

i have a como album and he does the partridge family's 'i think i love you'. a real hoot.
  6:29pm frenchee:

I have some doozies: probably my fave is the Enoch Light DISCO album
or Bing singing "Hey Jude"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm efd:

Everyone had an orchestra back in those days.
  6:31pm bill:

Avatar 6:32pm KP:

I read a story about Muzak written while it was still recording its own music. The writer dropped in on a session for a version of Paul Weller's "Ever Changing Moods."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm dale:

come over for fondue bill.
Avatar 6:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or fon don't if you don't like that...
  6:34pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm dale:

do you own any jose melis gaylord?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm redkayak:

@efd is right.....everyone really DID have an orchestra....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm dale:

the feel good happy sounds of hashish!
  6:37pm P-90:

Love that swingin' electric sitar!
  6:37pm JakeGould:

This version of “Marrakesh Express” is beyond soft.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: I own it all, but I brought just a small percentage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm redkayak:

I can see the King Family singing this....oy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm dale:

this is up there with guy and ralna doing that old spiritual 'one toke over the line'
  6:39pm bill:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm dale:

i hate to admit i own a few jose melis rekkids only because he looked so earnest and goofy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Folsom:

Oh this Lenny Dee is awesome.
Avatar 6:39pm glenn:

one thing i find interesting is that the people who listened to this stuff way back when wouldn't have been caught dead listening to the original versions.
  6:40pm bill:

  6:40pm Linda Lee:

love the show!! fantastic.
  6:41pm bill:

  6:42pm P-90:

Got my Dashiki on, slapped my face with a little Hai Karate, got the Gino's Pizza Rolls on the center rack of the oven, on my second Harvey Wallbanger. this should be an annual affair, @Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm redkayak:

@P-90 wins with Hai Karate reference :)
  6:43pm Linda Lee:

i'm with P-90 .. tho i think it should be monthly. like so many other wonderful things.
  6:44pm Linda Lee:

lovin it deeply. truly. madly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Folsom:

This music would be a good pledge swag compilation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm redkayak:

@Folsom Yep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm dale:

only orchestra missing was jackie gleason and his orchestra. he has one album where he delves into the sitar a bit.
  6:47pm Linda Lee:

all we need now is some Rod McKuen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm dale:

my wife is falling asleep on the kitchen floor to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm dale:

i looooooove l'amour est bleu.
  6:51pm bill:

  6:52pm P-90:

@dale: lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Gordon FM:

Loving your show as always, Gaylord.
Avatar 6:53pm dk:

this show has been giving me the most massive flashbacks: my dad's favorite radio station when i was growing up was minnesota's easy listening station: WAYL, "the beautiful whale".
  6:53pm Dave Sustain:

To early for Christmas music
  6:53pm stumpy:

I am in a groovy bag right now thanks Gaylord
Avatar 6:53pm dk:

if WAYL had a theme song, it was probably this version of "Love Is Blue"
  6:53pm mrmucho:

brilliant show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm dale:

how did ronnie play two pianos at once?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Lovin' the Easy, Gaylord.. Of course back in my early adolescence, I was a desperately captive audience to my parent's newly purchased Motorola color tv/am/fm stereo console. Much to my dismay, WPAT ruled during non -(outer borough ghost image)TV times. Occasionally I got control and thus my gateway ( WABC-FM) to the real stuff. Great job!
  6:54pm JakeGould:

I can’† describe how mellow this show has made me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm efd:

This Brass Impact tune should be Todd-O-Phonic Todd's parenthetical theme song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm redkayak:

Back in the day, it was WAIT here in Chicago.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Jeff from Rahway:

Gaylord, you raided my record collection tonight! I can't afford $30 vinyl records so it's the easy listening bargain bin for me. I'll just pour myself a G&T, don my slippers and robe and enjoy your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Whiskey Sours for all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm redkayak:

Thanks Gaylord - the show brought back nice memories of my folks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm dale:

key party at gaylord's house after the show!
  6:56pm Linda Lee:

Jake .. just imagine what it was like back in the day, with any desired pharmaceutical readily available from your doctor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gaylord Fields:

Thank you, everyone for getting in the spirit of this thing. Sorry I couldn't be more active with the comments.
  6:57pm JakeGould:

A can of Fresca for Gaylord!
  6:57pm Linda Lee:

you're doing the Lord's work, Gaylord. just what the doctor ordered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Jeff from Rahway:

Finally a WFMU show my parents would understand :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I should've measured my blood pressure before and after to see the change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm dale:

man, the arrangement of this jack jones is just so....so....SO....gorgeous!
  6:59pm Linda Lee:

@dale .. key party indeed! best wake up the wife ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm soup and fog:

Such a sweet mell-oh-dee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm KevinfromBayRidge:

You couldda actually made money doing radio, Gaylord!
  7:04pm P-90:

Thanks, Gaylord,
Avatar 10:39am Lynn F:

I just moved, which means I had to drag my record collection along, which I haven't touched in years. And for whatever reason, I rarely listen to FMU anymore. But while I was taking the records out of boxes and putting them back on shelves in my new place, Gaylord was basically playing the soundtrack of my collection. I mean, what are the chances? You file a Lenny Dee album on the shelf, and 30 minutes later, there's Lenny's version of "Wichita Lineman" playing on the radio. Thanks, Gaylord, for reminding me that there are magic moments that can only be achieved via WFMU.
