Hello djsheilab and fellow sophisticates. Time to start the weekend with some boom boom. Brace yourselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Adrian in London:

So sad about Carey. ANd only 33. Here's an interview with Lloyd Cole, the final question about how he felt having that song written about him: "It's one of the nicest things that's happened to me." www.theguardian.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Guido from Cologne:

OhLaLa Jacqueline Boyer!
She made a string of medicore Schlager in Germany during the late 60ies.
Avatar 3:13pm The Contessa:

Oh, I like this one!!
Avatar 3:14pm The Contessa:

I like her dress, too!
Avatar 3:18pm djsheilab:

One of the most perfect songs in my opinion. Hey Cool John! Common! And Grok-o-matic! and James from Westwood! Feeling the love from my crew!
Avatar 3:18pm Grok-o-matic:

I actually really like this Chris Issak song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm JtotheK:

hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm fred:

That Chris Isaak song is one of my guilty pleasures. (BTW the album was Heart Shaped World)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This album always makes me think of riding around in the backseat of my parents' car while they played this CD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm rsj:

somehow i knew there wasn't going to be that screaming lady
  3:20pm P-90:

Hi Sheila B! Who deos NOT have a soft spot for this Chris Isaak tune?
  3:20pm ?:

ahh, the memories of Helena Christiansen (sp?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm fred:

@rsj: Pipilotti Rist was in Les Reines Prochaines at the time, I've always hoped she was the one screaming, but I really don't know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Adrian in London:

@rsj I *love* 'that screaming lady' version.
  3:21pm Mark:

Still a great tune. Fuck the hipsters if they can't take a joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I'll always have a soft spot for the silly version of this song on the Beach Boys Party album with the BBs and all their friends howling this at the top of their lungs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm rsj:

i'm always kind of disappointed when the lady starts screaming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Guido from Cologne:

German parody on Chris Isaak:
"opfer dieses Liedes" (Victim of this song)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm rsj:

but it's good too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm fred:

@Adrian: my favorite cover ever
@Guido: Swiss, actually
Avatar 3:23pm Grok-o-matic:

Just recently found an old CD someone made me with 4 discs of 60s girl groups soul and doowop. Totally forgot about it. Never got to listen to it. This is definitely making me glad I found it. I'll have to convert it to audio discs and check it out.
Avatar 3:23pm Parq:

I think that may be the first time I've ever heard the Isaak original on FMU. The Les Reines was such an FMU hit that I didn't even know for a year that it was a cover at all.
Avatar 3:24pm Grok-o-matic:

Woah, this Beverly Jones track is killer diller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Guido from Cologne:

... arggghh ... Swiss ... I should have known ... it was on of Ken's "Swiss" shows.
  3:28pm timurf:

Hello yourself Sheila! Love your show, one of the most funnest darned shows on all of woof-moo. : )

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm coelacanth:

hello Sheila and others.

...i've definitely heard Isaacs' wicked game on fmu. Mary Wing probably.
Avatar 3:32pm Claw!:

Oi, Fish!
Avatar 3:32pm Parq:

Cut. Paste.

Nice cover version of the Chris Isaak song, starts out relatively normal, adds great background screaming in the second half. From the album Le Coeur En Beurre - Doublegras, featuring Pipilotti Rist, who also produced a video of this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Adrian in London:

Sheila, you might want to visit this place: www.theguardian.com...
  3:33pm sugarwolf:

I feel like my past few months have been just waves of frustration.
Avatar 3:33pm Claw!:

Yeah, this'll do nicely.
  3:34pm em:

DJ Scott also plays a fantastically horrible version of Wicked Game by Wing. I think it was on one of his premiums, but pretty sure he's played it during his show.
Avatar 3:34pm Cecile:

DUDE. you're playing MEgadeth!
  3:34pm ?:

need to turn this WAY up
Avatar 3:34pm djsheilab:

Avatar 3:36pm Claw!:

Yo, P-90! Good to see ya. :-)
Avatar 3:36pm Cecile:

I like this record, even though it gets mixed reviews. It has "in my hour of need" on it. What more do you want?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Sheila, don't catch any germs that Marty McSorley may have left behind this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm coelacanth:

Avatar 3:36pm Cecile:

yeah, he sounded miserable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm northguineahills:

Whoops, that should be 1989, not '69. haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm coelacanth:

(that should be a link)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm listener james from westwood:

Nothin' wrong with Megadeth to blow the blues out the door!
Avatar 3:37pm Cecile:

what does it link to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Stevel:

Desperately want to hear '69-vintage Megadeath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm exiledinbk:

There was this crazy mashup with this song and smashing pumpkins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm coelacanth:

wicked game by les reines on Mike Lupica's show.
Avatar 3:38pm SiHV:

Wow, I love this song. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm fred:

@Adrian: Thanks a lot for the Pipilotti Rist video. I love her work

Avatar 3:40pm Claw!:

Does anybody else feel like today is taking fooooorreeeeever to go by?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm fred:

@Sheila, first Wild At Heart and now Mulholland Drive! Are you going with a David Lynch theme today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm coelacanth:

'day's draggin' but tomorrow's coming too fast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Adrian in London:

@fred: I've seen two of her exhibitions in London in the past few years. Her video work, on huge screens, with surround sound and big bean bags to lie down and lose yourself in the visuals, are amazing.
Avatar 3:46pm djsheilab:

@Fred I think there may be a Lynch theme going on! I'm kinda obsessed with how brilliantly he can transition between the depths of hell + joy.
Avatar 3:48pm The Contessa:

Can't we all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm fred:

@Adrian: That's one way they work, not the only one. I did see one projected on a plaza, looking from a few floors above. But also a great one years ago, set up as an (oversized) apartment with the small video screens hidden in drawers, on the back of chairs, even on a bottle's label. Big ones too. Ever Is Over All was on a room of its own, it may be my fave. I had a T-shirt made with a still of that smiling woman smashing a car window with a flower
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm common:

@claw: today is taking foreeeeeeeever indeed. can't wait till beesie time.

Avatar 3:50pm The Contessa:

Where's Barbara Bain when you need her? Oh, hang on Nicole! We love her!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Adrian in London:

Love Nicole!!
Avatar 3:51pm The Contessa:

Met her in London. Adrian interviewed her. She has great evening dresses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm fred:

@Sheila: That Jacqueline Boyer track was originally from 1961 (according to Wikipedia)
Avatar 3:51pm djsheilab:

This song gets me right here.
Avatar 3:52pm Grok-o-matic:

I'm really liking all this new-ish stuff you're playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Greg from ZONE 5:

She is my muse. Actually, FMU is my muse…but Nicole is a close 2nd.
Avatar 3:52pm The Contessa:

Detecting some heartache this evening...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm coelacanth:

now i see that that wicked game video is incorrectly credited to one person; so my non-link was redundant. (except that it's properly credited.)

Avatar 4:12pm Baumer!:

I'm late to the party and have only been tuning into this show for the last couple weeks, but it has quickly become one of my favorites on WFMU. Great show!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Guido from Cologne:

Great album, from the binning to the end.
Avatar 4:15pm Grok-o-matic:

I was people here the other day about any Doris Duke like stuff they new about. This Esther Phillips is definitely that. Some serious gutter soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm fred:

Wow, this Esther Philips track is really something
Avatar 4:16pm Todd-o-phonic:

Speaking of David Lynch as you were when I was driving, last Friday Nicole Atkins & JD McPherson did a great duet of "In Dreams" @ Webster Hall.
Avatar 4:16pm Baumer!:

@djsheilab any plans to have this up as a podcast?

Sheila is one DJ I know is well-prepared for Singles Going Steady.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm listener james from westwood:

Indeed—she and Fine Wine have this one on lockdown!
  4:27pm Mark:

A really classy DJ is one who knows the exact moment to whip out her Yuki Fuji.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Mark & @ljfw: Outstanding!

Show your love for Sheila and FMU at Crunch Time with a generous pledge, fellow Boom Boomers! Buy one less Schlitz this week.
Avatar 4:29pm Cheri Pi:

Belated YAHHHHH for the Megadeth. My dog is named Edith Megadeth, Edie-Meg for short.
  4:29pm JakeGould:

Hey! Great music to do laundry and run errands to. Take that all other stations on right now!
  4:29pm Mark:

Half the appeal of this song is that hat, let's be honest.
  4:30pm JakeGould:

@CheriPi: Edith Megadeth? Who is her boyfriend? Archie Slayer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Stevel:

She spent all of the money on the hat. No cash left for buttons.
Avatar 4:33pm Cheri Pi:

LOL Jake. That's not a bad name.
  4:35pm JakeGould:

Err, are last names supposed to be announced on the air?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm listener james from westwood:

You pronounced my last name correctly! So few do! You are ultra-awesome.
Avatar 4:36pm The Contessa:

  4:36pm JakeGould:

Go James from Westwood!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Guido from Cologne:

just before the show I was looking after the copies of Head Soundrack available in the web.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Greg from ZONE 5:

This song is now property of Amanda Nazario.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Adrian in London:

If I called myself 'Adrian from Sanderstead' no-one would know where that was. And we are, technically, in a London borough. You worked in Oxted?! I've never been there, not even when I've been reading and missed my stop!
  4:39pm JakeGould:

Megadeth released a single in 1969? Shouldn’t that be 1988?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Micky Dolenz is an unsung hero of pop vocals.
Avatar 4:41pm Grok-o-matic:

Micky Dolenz is pretty awesome. I mean, his best friend were Harry Nilsson and Ringo Starr.
Avatar 4:41pm Grok-o-matic:

Plus, he wrote one of my favorite Monkees songs from Headquarters. Randy Scouse Git.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Grok, that alone confirms his hero status
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Is this "Heaven On Their Minds" as covered in another language? If so, good.
  4:48pm judy from croton:

Which came first, Gogoosh or JCSuperstar?
Avatar 4:48pm Jesse K:

I love this Gougoush version of this song, this is also on your beautiful Grazia record!
  4:48pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

The picture sleeves on the playlist are a nice touch!
Avatar 4:48pm djsheilab:

Thanks for all your donations FOLKS! Glad I managed to pronounce your name correctly @James, considering I can't pronounce anyone else's name right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber mostly, but this is one of the best musical theatre songs ever written. And this version is great.
Avatar 4:49pm Todd-o-phonic:

@Bronwyn: Al Jardine did a talk the other week and told us that "Beach Boys Party" is being re-issued this year with bonus tracks! Hopefully more Rivingtons songs!

@Guido-- Googoosh was the biggest pop star in pre-revolution Iran. And that's her Jesus Christ Superstar cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm chris:

hey, djsheilab! just wanted to shout out... missing most of your great show because my work is dumb... "googoosh" = awesome band name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 5:00pm Claw!:

Sounds like *someone* is a woman now...
Avatar 5:01pm BEAVO:

I would bet Googoosh aint' singing the Tim Rice lyrics about Jesus, she just stole the melody. It was probably impossible to collect royalties from Iran.
  5:02pm P-90:

@Sheila: glad to hear your mood came up!
  5:02pm Will:

X-ray Spex!

they are a good live group
i know then as more stoner-rock like,
but some great songs
Avatar 5:12pm BEAVO:

I like the bizarre juxtaposition of styles here, Megadeth and the Dixie Cups
Avatar 5:13pm Todd-o-phonic:

Best version ever of "Iko Iko" was performed by 3 women hanging at the bar at "The Sit On It Bar" in Philadelphia a good # of July 4th's ago. I believe they did the raunchier "My frat boy says he's going to set your ass on fire" version....
Avatar 5:14pm Todd-o-phonic:

Hope it's okay to say "ass" on the comments board!
Avatar 5:14pm Cheyenne:

Avatar 5:20pm Jeff:

I remember hearing (perhaps from Vin Scelsa) that some version of a "Witch Queen" / Marie Laveau song was a top hit at WFMU in the 1960s.
  5:21pm Tommy:

Great story. I get caught with porn ( not at school) when I was about 7 or so. I was expecting severe punishment. My dad just made a joke out of it. Guess he was relieved I was normal.
