Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am Matt from Springfield:

I AM in the dark! The light bulb in my computer room burnt out yesterday. And two days ago the power went out -- darkness is coming!...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:05am Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11am Matt from Springfield:

I always enjoy the CS Team too! Glad to see you here!
  12:11am P-90:

11 minutes in, this show already officially kicks ass
Avatar 12:13am C.S.:

Ha. I always though of myself as on the B-Team. Not really a constant presence compared to the FMU regulars but I tend to show up in the oddest time slots. ;)
Avatar 12:14am C.S.:

...but so do Meghan and Julie nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am Matt from Springfield:

I've enjoyed the relatively frequent Julie appearances on fill-ins.
  12:17am JakeGould:

Julie is this month’s Bill Mac as far as fill-ins go. And hey! That’s a nice thing!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:18am Julie:

it is nice to be here! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am Matt from Springfield:

How anti-establishment 80s of this music!

Evening Jake! I would say Julie is becoming a Todd-O-Phonic fill-in, but he's on the main schedule now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am Matt from Springfield:

It's nice to listen Julie! :D Thanks for bringing in the Dark Night magic again!
Avatar 12:23am C.S.:

Love the minimal wave synth of Void Vision.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:23am Julie:

She's touring Europe right now I think
Avatar 12:24am C.S.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29am Matt from Springfield:

@CS: That does not compute..! Then again, neither do I without my crutch, er, machinery.

And yes! Midnight is a great time slot - still so dark and quiet, not too late!
  12:29am Meghan:

That's the joys of fill ins.... Better hours!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:29am Julie:

Devo-ish! Devo-esque!
Avatar 12:33am C.S.:

@Tome: That's what I was thinking...only this version would be for the robotic Drew.
Avatar 12:35am C.S.:

@Matt Pair this with Devo's Working in a Coal Mine. (Which had been used as the theme for the Fred Savage sitcom back in the day.)
  12:35am JakeGould:

Wow. This “Five O’Clock World” cover is so weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am Matt from Springfield:

@CS: You know I may have been thinking of that subconsciously! Similar themes, now in similar styles.
Avatar 12:38am C.S.:

Nice transition with The Human League, Julie.

@Matt Ya, that makes sense.
  12:41am JakeGould:

Technically since this is before 3:00am, this is a “Dark Evening of the Soul” right?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:42am Julie:

midnight is evening?
  12:43am JakeGould:

@Julie: Compared to 3:00am being night, right?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:44am Julie:

Well, sure, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47am Matt from Springfield:

Wait, are there people who DON'T follow weird TV shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: Those people are weird.
Let's make a TV show about them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am Matt from Springfield:

Everyone will yield to Sabbath eventually.

  1:03am JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am Ike:

Even if Mr. Robot hadn't turned out to be good, I would've been impressed that somebody did a TV drama about something other than crime-fighters, spies, doctors, or lawyers.
Avatar 1:04am C.S.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am Matt from Springfield:

I just heard a good remix of Shirley Bassey's version of this song!

Do you hear a familiar dolorose atmosphere in here?:
" "If You Go Away" is an adaptation of the 1959 Jacques Brel song "Ne me quitte pas" with English lyrics by Rod McKuen."
Seasons In The Sun was also a Rod McKuen translation of Brel.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:05am Julie:

it was supposed to be a movie but he got really long winded
  1:08am P-90:

Someone very smart who knew a lot about music once told me, if you put a Neil Diamond record on at a party, a lot of people are going to make casually deprecating remarks when the song starts, because Neil isn't "cool." But then, for the rest of the song, the same people just get real quiet, conversation stops in the room-- because everyone is LISTENING, including the ones who had to say something snarky at first....you know?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:08am Julie:

My sister had Live at the Greek when I was little I liked it a lot
  1:10am JakeGould:

@P-90: Same thing with Steely Dan. Also, if you are Jewish on any level and you grow up in NYC you will be listening to tons of Neil Diamond and Billy Joel whether you want to or not.

Also, I found out in college that all of the orthodox kids consider Steely Dan to be really “out there”… It’s like Orthodox New Wave to listen to Steely Dan.
  1:12am P-90:

Live at the Greek is a classic.
And @Matt: Shirley B. can do no wrong in my book, and she seems to be especially re-mixable/mash-uppable, her stuff just translates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Donald Fagen's already got the New Wave skinny-tie look:
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:12am Julie:

Orthodox New wave
Avatar 1:12am C.S.:

Back in my youth I used to tune in a lot of commercial radio and for a time that included Neil Diamond. Now I just can't really listen to that stuff anymore. Now I'm lookng for what I haven't heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: No wrongs I agree! - EFD also agrees! The awards show that brought her to sing "Goldfinger" recently also agrees!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am Matt from Springfield:

"re-mixable/mash-uppable", her voice itself has that je-ne-sais-quoi *rhythm* about it - it fits into different mixes well!
  1:14am JakeGould:

@MattfromSpringfield: At the college newspaper there was this one Orthodox kid who would make sure to point out he was into Steely Dan when some of us talked about music… We were talking about Metallica, Depeche Mode and the Stone Roses so that “Dan” news kind of introduced me to a new level of, “Well… This is… What?”
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:16am Summer and Michael:

So glad to hear your fill-in tonight!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:17am Julie:

thank you Summer & Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am Matt from Springfield:

"Yeah! Modern music! Secular! The Dan guys aren't even Orthodox!"

Kind of like the old Catholic cardinal some years back who talked of the "demonic" influence in rock music from bands like The Eagles! ..Actually, that was prob worse!
Avatar 1:21am C.S.:

Repent sinners! www.youtube.com...
  1:21am P-90:

CS: of course a lot of that stuff that used to be on commercial radio was great. But they played it all to DEATH, and we're all here at 91.1 looking for what we haven't heard, or at least not heard as much.
Steely Dan a great example: that band in its heyday had a lot of qualities that FMU DJ's and listeners would tend put a great deal of value on: musicianship, originality, inspired arrangement/production etc. But its one of they're favorite bands to hate on now and belittle. Because of the crushing overexposure for a couple of decades, a lot of people just can't listen to any of it any more. Ditto Fleetwood Mac and a slew of others.
Avatar 1:23am C.S.:

@P-90 Yes. Used to listen to classic rock, oldies when they played do-wop, country, easy listening, 80s music. All played to death and I just can't listen to even the songs I liked for very long.
Avatar 1:24am C.S.:

I wonder if I would like college / community radio if all the music was found in the mainstream and played to death
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am Matt from Springfield:

A Place Both Wonderful and Strange - gotta love these band/song/album titles you find!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:26am Julie:

Niabi from Radiana is in this band
  1:26am P-90:

That's part of what's so cool about shows like Spazz and Rex, even Michael Shelley or what Amanda Nazario does, they play "oldies", but not those same 50 "oldies" that WCBS or other "oldies format" stations play and play and play...
Avatar 1:28am C.S.:

Nothing hurts my ears more than when I catch mainstream music on the PA system of a store or restaurant and can't get away.
Avatar 1:32am C.S.:

I was just telling a friend that tuning into college / community radio is more intimate and requires you to be an active listener in order to track down all the obscure music.
  1:32am sugarwolf:

@P-90: see, I feel like a total square because all the music fans/critics I know looooooove Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac and I am just not interested in any of it
  1:34am JakeGould:

@P-90: That said… There should be a band named, “Slew” and if they have a cover band, the band will be named “Slew of Others.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, CTs! Garlands!

Julie, play them again! Play them 4 times, we'll call it

What music could save a jersey guy in Albuquerque
  1:51am rw:

Speaking of The Cure, I remember watching the video Staring at the Sea (I think that's what it's called) back in the mid '80s. It's a compilation of The Cure videos in chronological order. It's pretty fun to watch the transformation/progression of Robert Smith's hairstyle.

@ Matt from Springfield -- good point! when i was a kid, i would get her LPs from the local library -- knew most of the songs, but never just read the lyrics on their own (yup those were the days of lyric sheets!) . . . some of them would sound kinda "corny" but DAMN! when she sang them it was like the words were given life, depth, dimension -- like you say, total SOUL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06am Matt from Springfield:
