Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:20pm chris:

hi, Scott! hi, peeps!

Lovin' this set (missed first set, would have loved that one, too)!
Avatar 4:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This Kelley Stoltz = oddly (hype-era) Robert Calvert vibe. Neato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh no! Sad news on Carey Lander! What a shame, Camera Obscura is one of the new bands I really like...
I dedicate that beautiful electric piano part to Carey's memory.
Avatar 4:27pm Cecile:

Very sad, but it sounded like she had a lovely period of remission to enjoy. That's something.
  4:29pm Steve-O:

Hi Scott and company.....definitely a tragic shame that Carey Lander died; I've only heard a few of Camera Obscura's songs, but I've liked all of them so far.

R.I.P. Carey Lander, we'll miss you. ='(
Avatar 4:33pm Cecile:

I'm looking forward to it. I'll see how long I last. I lasted 5 minutes for the Canterbury special.
Avatar 4:33pm Chris from DC:

Ok, what Styx song? Gotta know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Īke:

Is the Eagles' one great song "Journey of the Sorcerer" (the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme music)?
  4:34pm Dean:

Klaatu? Which Eagles song is good? I kinda like TBS's "I Can't Tell You Why," schmaltzy as it is.
  4:34pm Chud:

The Scorpions' first album was pretty decent
  4:34pm Dean:

Starland Vocal Band. "Afternoon Delight" was great!
  4:34pm wild neil:

My Sharona by The Knack.
  4:35pm Dean:

Early Scorpions were fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Rupert Holmes "Tim"
  4:35pm Dean:

Van Halen, "Hot for Teacher."
Avatar 4:35pm Cecile:

Dean, Chromeo does an excellent version of that Eagles song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@Dean: Actually that was their mega-hit that many don't like!
For "Bill & Taffy" of Starland, you could consider "Take Me Home, Country Roads" as their one good song, written w/ John Denver.
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

oh! John Waite - Missing you.
Avatar 4:36pm BEAVO:

Oh I thought you were gonna say Dunaway has died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Oh, you GOTTA do that show, Scott. Maybe split the workload with McGasko?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Matt from Springfield:

I'm sorry, Rupert Holmes' 1971 eerie classic was "Timothy":
  4:38pm Mdurek:

niiiiiiiice. hoof and mouth
  4:38pm Dean:

Listening now, Cecile. Yeah, I know, Matt. A buddy and I looped it, sort of, on a cassette from a 45, played it eight or ten times in a row. (This Chromeo is good.)

John Waite's "Missing You" is good by other performers, e.g., Jimmy LaFave. Killer version.
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

yeah, the homemade talk box makes it.
  4:41pm Dean:

For my money, the best Eagles song isn't an Eagles song. It's Poco's "Rose of Cimarron."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@Dean: There's a certain appeal to "Afternoon Delight" IMO - the Anchorman cast did a good cover of it.
Avatar 4:41pm Cecile:

Commodores - Brick House. They never moved me except for that one.

Yes, Matt, it was both polished and hilarious.
  4:41pm Dean:

I'm with you, Matt. It's the synthesizer, almost Camel.
Avatar 4:42pm MenfussMike:

@Cecile if Machine Gun by Commodores doesn't move you then....
  4:43pm Dean:

Going out on a limb here: Elvis Costello, "What's So Funny..." Really, it's the only EC I can stomach.
Avatar 4:43pm MenfussMike:

@dean...hehe, i can't even stomach that.
Avatar 4:44pm slugluv1313:

very early Chicago, when they were still known as Chicago Transit Authority had some pretty cool stuff
and of course The Doobie Brothers! their early singles were okay, imho -- but that could just be my recollections as a kid, when i had not formed any real cultural/artistic parameters
@ Matt from Springfield -- on the *other* hand -- i LOVED The Buoys' version of "Timothy"!!! so i did have some sort of sense of *aesthetics* :)
Avatar 4:44pm Cecile:

not really, MM.

I love the first three albums, then I'm Elvised out.
  4:44pm BriJet:

Good afternooooon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Matt from Springfield:

@slugluv: Heh, glad to know you're a supporter of "Timothy"! :)

Afternoooooooon delights, BriJet!
  4:45pm Dean:

Chicago, indeed, but those early records (I'd include even the whopper live album) had multiple choice tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Scott Williams:

Hola Brij!
Avatar 4:46pm Chris from DC:

Don't care about the Outlaws at all, but Green Grass & High Tides is really good.
  4:47pm Dean:

Talking Heads, "Love Goes to Building on Fire"
Eno, "Here He Comes"

Outlaws GG&HT is a great call.
Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

Same, but Hurry Sundown is the one I liked by them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Scott Williams:

Yeah, Chicago doesn't count b/c they've got a whole lotta great songs, not just one. 1st 2 records, fine stuff. and I think I can't count stuff that's appreciated for its novelty or ironic value. so many good suggestions! Timothy is a good one.
  4:48pm wild neil:

Ali Babki "Baby Bump"....the electric sitar really gets me...
Avatar 4:49pm slugluv1313:

@ Dean -- re: early Chicago, yes! exactly!
very early Eagles too -- i really liked "Peaceful Easy Feeling" -- and "Rose of Cimarron" is a beautiful song
Avatar 4:49pm Cecile:

Soundgarden doesn't count, cause I like 2 songs by them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Greg from ZONE 5:

I used to like "Rusty Cage", but it turns out I only like the opening minute of "Rusty Cage".
Avatar 4:55pm V Priceless:

Soundgorden had there moments, mostly thanks to Ben Shepherd
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

I like Rusty Cage, and I like Johnny Cash doing Rusty Cage. ALso "fell on black days" because it's great road warrior fake Zeppelin rock.
Avatar 4:56pm V Priceless:

  4:56pm Dean:

Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, "Our Song" (probably violates the "novelty or ironic" rule)
Avatar 4:57pm slugluv1313:

Little River Band, but that is only b/c i "sing" their song "Lady" to my demented little cat BRADY
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

I like their old stuff. Long Way Home is a great moody slow burner.
Avatar 4:58pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Scott Williams:

I love "Music for the Body", as well as lots of stuff both Geesin and Waters did separately. "Careful With that Axe Eugene" has one of the best screams in history... maybe the best! Soundgarden... I sometimes like Kim Thayhil's playing, and I'm down with Matt Cameron's other stuff. But Chris Cornell is a really big problem for me - just totally subjectively. hurts my ears
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Greg from ZONE 5:

YES! dundun dun dun dun
Avatar 5:00pm Cecile:

Chris Cornell has that Paul Rogers problem. Sings too hard most of the time, and the material isn't up to his voice and he doesn't care.
  5:02pm Mick Hucknall Fan Club:

Too hard. Bah. he's the best Europe's had for decades. Only competition might be Rod.
  5:03pm P. Colada:

@Matt - Ironically, Rupert Holmes DID have a hit song called "Him" in addition to his "Timothy" with the Buoys.
Avatar 5:03pm MenfussMike:

HATER was the best band Matt Cameron ever played in
Avatar 5:03pm Cecile:

I love Paul Rogers. And I love Rod. But they don't do subtle any more (they used to) and they sing shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Matt from Springfield:

@P Colada: In fact, I may have conflated the titles in my mind, which was why I looked up to confirm the song title and noticed that other song. Two VERY different songs by Rupert!
  5:05pm Tad Fan:

Well they are OLD now. Jesus. Oh and, Layne Staley was the best of the Seattle lot I think. Really miss him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Now, just TRY to find one good song by UK group Black Lace, of "Agadou" infamy!

AllMusic wrote, "If you're looking for the band with the least street credibility in the world, whose name alone makes people cringe, then look no further than Black Lace, the equivalent of the naughty seaside postcard, who would record almost any song, whatever damage it did to their image".
Avatar 5:05pm V Priceless:

Bush - Everything Zen (if only for the "asshole brother" line and Bowie reference)

@ Menfuss: Hater is great!
Avatar 5:06pm Chris from DC:

The Use!
Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

I loved Layne, too.
  5:06pm Tad Fan:

@Matt - Rupe wrote a great song for Streisand called "Letters That Cross In The Mail." His pinnacle.
Avatar 5:07pm slugluv1313:

oh wow -- Black Lace sound HORRIBLE! i MUST investigate! :) . . . THANK YOU, Matt!
  5:08pm Where's Deacon?:

Actually, it's kind of insane how good Rodgers can still sing. That being said, Adam Lambert is a better fit for Queen, though I'd have loved to have seen Justin Hawkins take a whack at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, seems Rupe was a pretty good songwriter for a while.
Avatar 5:11pm Cecile:

I think Rodgers is still a great singer. His material, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Matt from Springfield:

NICE! John Carpenter remixx!
  5:12pm InFirmed:

Hey Scottie ... 67%!!!! U did it! @Cecile ... Yes, I agree. Downhill since Radioactive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm osvi:

Damn, had to go preorder this John Carpenter lp...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@slugluv: En-joy! (if you can!)
  5:13pm Black-Eyed Boyz:

Black Lace was no Paper Lace, that's for sure.
  5:15pm Mdurek:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Scott Williams:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Scott Williams:

Avatar 5:19pm slugluv1313:

@ Matt -- oooooooo it HURTS!!!! truly AWFUL! but i gotta wonder, HOW have i never heard of Black Lace before?
yes i am one of those who "love" stuff like this simply b/c it IS so . . . PAINFUL!
and then it lead me to *this*! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 5:22pm Cecile:

agadoo makes the Macarena sound like the best record ever made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh yeah, Los Del Rio's "Macarena" was a huge neutron bomb worldwide in '96, but Black Lace actually issued their OWN version of it after it already peaked!! I mean COME ON! ;)

I love "painful" stuff too, which is how I discovered there's so much Euro music that's so awful it never makes the jump to this side of the pond...even with the Internet! On the plus side, I've discovered the terrifying world of "Eurovision" and its related bands!
Avatar 5:23pm Cecile:

if you want painful, look for the Canadian cartoon band Prozzak.
Avatar 5:25pm Cecile:

99% of the records made by former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants are also certificably awful. Funny sometimes, but mostly awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Marty McSorley has played RuPaul herself on occasion--can't imagine "RuPaul wannabes" would be any better!

Ooof, there's a sad category of fame-seekers: "RuPaul WANNABES"! :D
Avatar 5:26pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:28pm Cecile:

RuPaul has actual charisma and uses a good producer. Not so much other people. Although the drag supergroup DWV does some funny parodies. And Ginger Minj can flat out sing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Scott Williams:

@ Cecile and Matt -- 1st time i heard "Macarena" was in the back of one of those HUGE old NYC taxi cabs, i was sharing a ride with two friends and the cab driver was playing a cassette -- "Macarena" came on and we went nuts! bouncing up and down and trying to sing along . . . huge in other parts of the world, had just not hit here . . . YET! cab driver must have gotten a kick out of our enthusiasm . . . but yeah, "Macarena" i can still listen to and enjoy, with Black Lace i wonder . . . what the hell did i just watch!?
and omg, i experienced the Eurovision competition for the first time this year . . . OF COURSE the Hungarian group had quite the "downer" of a song, compared to the other over-the-top GLITZINESS!

HulloHullo Williamsonians. Even I hadda walk around in this weather here; grateful to catch the last bit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Many eras of Eurovision from the 50s to the present, but they remain fundamentally the same!
Avatar 5:40pm Cecile:

Katrina and the Waves won one year, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Hullo RevRab!
Nice weather indeed - the leaves are even starting to turn autumn colors down here! A perfect combo of sights and temp, while it lasts.
Avatar 5:42pm slugluv1313:

@ Cecile -- Prozzak -- OUCH!!!!!!!! no joke, i could NOT watch one of their videos all the way through! funny, their music is supposed to make people "feel better"???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Katrina and the Waves 1997, with the song "Love Shine a Light". Surprisingly, with the original members after so many years in obscurity!

"Brotherhood of Man" also won for the UK in '76, but it was always a corporate studio group before (in '70 the group of that name had the hit with "United We Stand", but that's not the same people).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hi Matt-fS! I'm in NewHampshuh : attitude real proprietory about turning leaves here...can't let 'em catch on it happens elsewhere too, so hush now Southerner...
Avatar 5:44pm slugluv1313:

yeah, i had never heard of Eurovision until i was a teenage and ABBA's "Waterloo" became a hit here in the States
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Sorry RR, it's gone "viral"! (Though just a tenth-generation copy of New England's leaf-turning, ours doesn't compare in beauty!)
Avatar 5:45pm Cecile:

Brotherhood of Man song was a huge hit in OZ. it was stupid as hell.
Avatar 5:46pm Cecile:

slug, some of my favorite memories of when MuchMusic was on US TVs was seeing Ed the Sock eviscerate Prozzak videos during year-end round ups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Matt: Yer in Virginny, right? I thot the Blue Ridge Mtn.s were the most beautiful Nature I'd seen - along w/ Yosemite in Cali.
...You could have EuroPersons sing about how dumb Mericuns are - call it Euroderision...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: "Save All Your Kisses For Me", the Eurovision one? Amazingly that was a U.S. #1 on A/C!! Yet Abba's "Waterloo", the best and only GOOD Eurovision song wasn't! Whadda world! ("Fernando" did reach #1 on U.S. A/C that year though).

Brotherhood of Man also did a blatant, stupid rip-off of "Fernando" called "Angelo" at the same time!
Avatar 5:49pm Cecile:

yes. It was a huge hit. And Fernando was #1 for 13 weeks in Oz that year. Still can't listen to that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: We do have incredible Mtns, gotta give us that. Blue Ridge and Skyline Drive on the eastern ridge, Appalachians west of the Shenandoah, the New River Valley where I went to school "way the hell in the southwest of VA". My Scots-Irish background heartily approves!
Avatar 5:51pm MenfussMike:

Save All Your KISSES for Me....wow, blast from the past. Was on Irish radio constantly circa 1980
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...just heard Pete Townshend loves 'S.O.S.' by Abba - which makes indefinable sense...
- as do my Scotts-(alleged)Cherokee.
Avatar 5:52pm Cecile:

the Clash and Joe Strummer loved Abba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Scott Williams:

$30 in 7 minutes? We can do this, right? 75% of my total goal for the Silent fundraiser is totally attainable, folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Kenny G's last regular show has him starting by playing old tapes Vicki/PLU made with friends as a British teen in the 80s - including belting along and mimicking "Save All Your Kisses.." and Hot Chocolate's "It Started With A Kiss"! Great irreverent fun!
Avatar 5:53pm MenfussMike:

SOS is my fave ABBA song. Their museum in Stockholm is really cool.

@ Cecile -- yes i remember when Much Music was here! briefly showed up on channel 68, i think -- but damn! bummed that i missed out in that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Abba is a dirty little secret of many musicians! In fact nowadays you don't even need to be "closeted" in your fandom!
  5:56pm Aha:

Many are indeed, Bjorn Again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: Sounds probable, a lot of Cherokee is mixed in w/ Scots, just as a lot of French-Canadian is mixed in w/ Huron and other tribes up that way.
