Avatar 3:35pm Cecile:

it's been enough time.
Avatar 3:35pm Cecile:

this is amazing. I hope it lasts for hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Ike:

Jonathan Herweg played a cut from this MBV comp and I asked if it was a bootleg. He doubted it, saying it'd have to be a very deluxe bootleg w/180+-gram vinyl. But rateyourmusic.com indeed refers to it as a bootleg, if that means anything. (Everybody should check out that show on the archives, BTW. Herweg is excellent.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Scott Williams:

@Ike, it feels like a boot to me. no notes, nuthin'. outta Belgium, Arkain Filloux label. I could be wrong. Hey Bronwyn!
  3:40pm paula pc:

glider is also on the "soon" ep with the supersexy kissing cover
Avatar 3:40pm Chris from DC:

Discogs lists it as "unofficial".
  3:44pm ?:

really strong Flight of the Conchords vibe here
  3:44pm paula pc:

duh ep is called glider too. anyway, it's on there -- all four cuts on glider ep are superb = soon from loveless + this glider track and don't ask why + off your face...all great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Ike:

Is this telephone hold music?! Love it. Only FMU would play something with a title like "Somerset County (NJ) Committee Meeting loop."

  4:35pm Dean:

From FADER magazine, March 2007:

I'm at a Giles Peterson gig in NYC back in '95 when he drops this crazy organ-led, horn-fueled funk number that boasted the chorus Love will get you hiiiiiiiiiiigh… with a technicolor three-part harmony that stretched on 'til infinity. I immediately made a drunken beeline to the booth with two other brothas to inquire about the cut. When Giles exclaimed "Jo Mama" he was met with three "Whatthefuckujussay?" screw faces and thrust the jacket into our hands, shouting, "It's the title! The title!" Primarily made up of members of Carole King's backup band, Jo Mama made two albums of slightly cheesy, yet very earnest, good time mellow West Coast funkn-roll. Well, funky if you think Carole King's Tapestry is kind of funky, like I do. But then I think the Carpenters are also kind of funky. They have to be, because they're one of a very select few white artists you'll see in any older black person's record collection.
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

who's the writer?
  4:37pm Dean:

Damn, database doesn't say.
  4:38pm Dean:

FADER. Mar2007, Issue 44, p170-170. That's it.
Avatar 4:38pm Cecile:

Thanks, Dean! You did your best!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

We used to have a Ghanaian chap at work named Joe Yamoah. Some folks called him Jo Mama.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Scott Williams:

Thanks Cecile & Ariel!
  4:45pm Dean:

Found it: Alec DeRuggiero.
Avatar 4:46pm Cecile:

Wow! Thanks, Dean!
  4:46pm JakeGould:

  4:47pm JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: Joe Yamoah must be happy to have been Joe Mama.
  4:47pm Dean:

Mistake: Duane Harriott. Found a download site for FADER. DeRuggierro gets top billing, but some of the reviews, inc. this one, are attrib'd to DH.
  4:48pm Dean:

"Duane Harriott is a DJ, writer and music savant over at Other Music in NYC."
Avatar 4:49pm steve:

good stuff right here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Scott Williams:

Yep, Duane is also the only other FMU DJ to have spun Jo Mama, at least since we started keeping records
  4:54pm Dean:

Now that's a cool coincidence. FWIW, the reviews in FADER usually include just a thumbnail of the cover, but this one features a large image of the cover of the album.
  4:55pm Dean:

Er, I think there should be a comma between "Pray" and "America."
Avatar 4:58pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

yay. that loop.
Avatar 4:58pm Chris from DC:

Ha, I knew that was coming next.
Avatar 4:59pm steve:

i need to know what "oh god oh man" is from. at long last.
Avatar 4:59pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

two favorite things ever heard in 18 years of WFMU listening-ing.

@Steve: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Scott Williams:

That's Ryan O'Neal (sp?), forget the film, but I think Isabella Rosselini is in it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Scott Williams:

Thanks @Chris from DC!
Avatar 5:05pm steve:

yay thanks Chris. so its from "Tough Guys Don't Dance". its mathematically impossible for a movie with that title to not be tragicomedy gold.

wasn't it in someone's theme music, maybe Chris T?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Scott Williams:

Thank you, Sasha! And thanks you Mommy! Let's shoot for more than 50% on the pledge widget, whaddya say y'all?
