hi tony! so glad someone decided to put out some Practical Music.
Avatar 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Hi Riley! It's about time, isn't it!
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

This Walls of Genius track is a "cover" of a traditional American folk tune that appears on Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music." Feel free to hum along.
Avatar 12:11pm riley:

finally!! now I can get some damn work done.

  12:14pm Dean:

Couldn't wait until March 17 to play this, eh?
Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Dean! Every day is St. Paddy's Day.
Avatar 12:16pm βrian:

That's also tomato-starting day.
  12:18pm Dean:

I'd like to think I drink as if that were the case.

Did you mean "tomato-startling day," βrian?
Avatar 12:20pm V Priceless:

ooh..one of my fave Ubu tunes! Idle Eyes Idolize!
Avatar 12:20pm βrian:

No, though we do whisper to the seedlings once they're up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm JtotheK:

cool tune... in an attempt to broaden my (limited) Pere Ubu knowledge, picked up and enjoyed 'Art of Walking' recently...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Parq:

Ubu Sings Ubu is doing a show on Feb. 8, 2016, at BB King's in Times Square. I'll repeat that for those who think I'm just making a lame joke -- Ubu Sing Ubu is playing B.B. King Blues Club & Grill next February.
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Parq!
Avatar 12:23pm βrian:

The kumquats have a pleasing titter when surprised.
Avatar 12:23pm V Priceless:

give my best to the Brussels Sprouts, Rev!
  12:23pm Dean:

Q: Why do you whisper to tomato seedlings? A: To urge the slow growing ones to catsup.
Avatar 12:24pm V Priceless:

Dean: that barely cut the mustard
  12:24pm Dean:

VP: I'll take that as a condiment.
  12:25pm Dean:

I do so relish a pun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

I'm awake!
Avatar 12:26pm βrian:

There's gotta be a nightshade pun somewhere in there.
Avatar 12:27pm V Priceless:

you're on a roll, Dean!
Avatar 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

I thought this track would get you out of bed. (Heya, Uncle M!)
Avatar 12:28pm βrian:

A seedy roll.
  12:28pm Dean:

Let the CD roll!
Avatar 12:31pm βrian:

Do you recall the old Contadina label with the peasant woman and her beautiful sun-ripened tomatoes?
  12:32pm Dean:

Recall it? Gosh, I daydream about it all the time.
Avatar 12:36pm βrian:

"One day, you'll be like her," I tell them.
Avatar 12:37pm βrian:

Alas the décolletage is no more ...

Avatar 12:41pm V Priceless:

Hackett's been playing this live of late - and doing a fine job of it, at that!
Avatar 12:41pm Cecile:

I liked this for about 30 seconds but then it turned into Genesis. hahahhaha
Avatar 12:42pm V Priceless:

oh - you'll like the ending, C!
Avatar 12:42pm V Priceless:

or not!
Avatar 12:42pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Cecile! Boys will be boys, and Genesis will be Genesis.
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

I'll probably love it.
Avatar 12:43pm βrian:

In the beginning … it was all over.
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

Exactly. Can't fault either for that. They must being doing something right to have so many people I respect like them. I just don't.
Avatar 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

If you don't like this song about a giant vegetable, stay tuned for the next song, which is also about a giant vegetable.
  12:44pm Dean:

"Then God said, 'Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.' And it was so." Mmmm, tomatoes!
Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

Giant vegetables I have zero problem with.
Avatar 12:44pm V Priceless:

cranking it...
Avatar 12:45pm βrian:

I'm stuck on my garden fruit jag, for the moment.
Avatar 12:46pm Cecile:

I made some killer Delicata squash pickles.
Avatar 12:46pm βrian:

A wiser Adam would have stuck with the tomatoes.
Avatar 12:47pm βrian:

@Cecile: just a hot brine? Any pre-cooking involved?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Cecile is here! Sea seal is not here!
  12:47pm Dean:

I thought it was the taste for wisdom that got him in trouble in the first place, mythically speaking.
Avatar 12:48pm V Priceless:

A real plant, and pretty messed-up too! en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 12:48pm βrian:

If so, that would be the fig, not the apple. Blessed knowledge.
Avatar 12:50pm Cecile:

Nope, just a hot brine. I soaked the squash in water with about a teaspoon or so of salt in it the fridge because I couldn't get them pickled right away. Put them in a jar with a bay leaf, mustard seed, pinch of thyme, whole cloves, allspice, pinch of nutmeg. I was making a more sour brine so I took a couple of cups out and quickly dissolved some brown sugar in it, maybe a tablespoon or so cause I don't like my pickles real sweet. they turned out really good.
Avatar 12:51pm βrian:

That plant has taken over Wisconsin, making unlucky wayfarers look like lepers for a few days.
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

hogweed looks like Bluto if he were Queen Anne's Lace. Also poisonous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm mauri:

that's it. I go eat.
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

this Stackridge was mostly cool, but getting close to setting my twee meter off.
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:52pm βrian:

Maybe I'll try that this weekend. A good contrast to our many jars of dilly beans.
Avatar 12:52pm V Priceless:

Danger Will Robinson!
Avatar 12:53pm Cecile:

it's not an exact recipe - I combined two recipes and threw in my own seasoning.
Avatar 12:54pm βrian:

I derive wisdom from puttanesca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Parq:

This is actually the first time I've ever heard anything from these guys besides "Fish Heads".
Avatar 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Puttanesca with a heart of gold?
  12:58pm Dean:

Yo no soy marinara.
Avatar 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

If Barnes & Barnes hadn't positioned themselves as a Dr. Demento novelty act more people would see that they fit right in there with the Residents, Snakefinger, etc.
Avatar 12:59pm βrian:

A heart of gold and a bite, to boot.
Avatar 1:01pm βrian:

@Cecile: a hot-pack, right? How long in the boiling water?
Avatar 1:01pm Cecile:

I agree. And Bill Mumy's rapport with the Lost in Space fans and comfort with his own past set an example for people like Wil Wheaton who came up in TV SF.
Avatar 1:02pm Cecile:

no hot pack. I put them in a clean plastic tub and poured it over the squash and seasoning. Let it cool on the counter and put it in the fridge. No hot pack for me, my kitchen isn't conducive to it. Ready to eat in about 2 days. keeps for up to three months.
Avatar 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

David B. Doty (on now) was a member of the fine '80s ensemble Other Music: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

... who specialized in just intonation tuning.
Avatar 1:09pm βrian:

Would you say he had a courtly tone?
Avatar 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Indeed he do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Parq:

"Oh, Rufus!"

"You're not so bad yourself."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

I'm loving all the Stackridge. I recommend their entire catalog.
Avatar 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, I've been reacquainting myself with how good they were over the past year or so.
Avatar 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Never did have the last album, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

You know they've been gigging a lot, lately.
Avatar 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

"Mr. Mick," I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm listener james from westwood:

Now they've made Screamin' Jay cry. Those bastards!
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

Been listening, but I need to head out now. Sad! But thank you for the great first one hour and a half, Tony!
Avatar 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

See you, Mayuko! Thanks for stopping by.
Avatar 1:30pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Tony. Nice version of Quiet Joys. I've not heard that one before.
Avatar 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Peter! Yes, this version features a great orchestral arrangement by Peter Schickele.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

I love this J.J. Cale song.
Avatar 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Me too. Have you ever heard the Pat Travers Band cover? It's actually not bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't. I'll seek it out.
Avatar 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Charlie:

Greets. Listening while pottering about the house. Fine sounds. And sounds fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Tony. I'll click it later. I'm about to go MObile.
Avatar 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

The track title for this Happy End cut appears only in Japanese. Where's Mayuko when you need her?
Avatar 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Charlie! Hola hey ho hooray!
Avatar 1:53pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm listener james from westwood:

Happy pottering, Charlie!
  1:56pm MrFab:

The ONLY song that is allowed to use those goofy syn-drum sounds.
Avatar 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, βrian! Happy End track 7 = "It's Summer."
Avatar 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

MrFab! Greetings!
Avatar 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

Screamin' Jay is feeling glum again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

Jeez, he can't catch a break!
Avatar 2:02pm βrian:

Eszter Balint says Screamin' Jay is cool.
  2:03pm monobrau:

I thought he said "Silent Hairy Woman" at first
Avatar 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hairy women should be seen and not heard. (Heya, monobrau!)
Avatar 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

... whatever that means (basically, nothing).
Avatar 2:05pm βrian:

Is silent hairy confinement cruel and unusual? (Everybody's got a thing ...)
Avatar 2:07pm northguineahills:

Well, this is a different side to Lightnin' Hopkins.... Oh, forgot to say hi, been here since Genesis.
Avatar 2:09pm βrian:

@NGH: talk about dating yourself!
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, NGH!
Avatar 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

This is *almost* turning into "Sympathy for the Devil"
  2:14pm MrFab:

Keep expecting this guy to sing: "Pleased to meatchoo...hope you guessed mah name..."
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Just needs a few hoots.
Avatar 2:15pm northguineahills:

Well, if I really wanted to date myself, I'd mention the first album (cassette) I bought w/ my own money was Genesis's "Invisible Touch" (I was 10).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Charlie:

@ngh: "Been here since Genesis" suggests you're much older than that.
  2:18pm MrFab:

Pleased to meat chew?
  2:18pm Dean:

That's "fleas do meat chew."
Avatar 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

Fleas have been chewing my meat, that's for sure. Or maybe these are mosquito bites.
Avatar 2:24pm βrian:

In French, to put a flea in someone's ear means to arouse suspicion.
Avatar 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

And here's another Peter Schickele arrangement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Rich in Washington:

Wow! I'd never heard of Wyschnegradsky before! It sounds like Jandek on piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Rich in Washington:

Hello Tony! Stupid work meetings have had me away for most of the show.
Avatar 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Rich! Ivan W. wrote music in quarter-tone tuning, way back in the '30s. Can be unnerving for the stomach on first hearing.
Avatar 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

The Levitts were the hip Brady Bunch.
Avatar 2:40pm βrian:

The Brady Bunch wasn't hip??
Avatar 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

OK -- the super-duper-hip Brady Bunch.
Avatar 2:42pm βrian:

(You will rue the Dey ...)
  2:43pm Dean:

That was a Partridge.
Avatar 2:45pm βrian:

Oh, yes. The radio-receptive braces threw me off.
Avatar 2:46pm northguineahills:

Thanks again, Tony, gotta go. Digging this Knaifel!
Avatar 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

See yerz, NGH!
Avatar 2:51pm V Priceless:

Fab show, Tony! Thanks a heap!
Avatar 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, VP!
Avatar 2:53pm Tony Coulter:

Hey: Was the mic level way too high just then? It's hard to tell sometimes with these super-cheapo headphones I've got over here.
  2:53pm Dean:

Sounded fine.
Avatar 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

Good. Thanks, D.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks muchly, Tony! Glad to be along for the ride!
