Hey Jeff, this track is another cool surprise. Where do you find 'em?
  3:17am Bob:

Great show so far! thanks
Avatar 3:18am Jeff Conklin:

Good morning, fellas.
Avatar 3:19am Jeff Conklin:

Are you talking about 60 Million Buffalo, Simon? That one a friend turned me on to recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21am pacific standard simon:

Yes. That was nice. I wish I had friends like that. Oh, wait, I do! At WFMU.
Avatar 3:23am Jeff Conklin:

I'm also a record collector, Simon. I come across a lot of stuff that way...
Avatar 3:31am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

dang, this is a sick jam!
Avatar 3:32am Jeff Conklin:

Hey, Adam. Yes, Markusfeld rules
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33am pacific standard simon:

I used to be a cheap-ass record collector -- mostly thrift shops -- but I took the lazy man's way out and pledged allegiance to digital. Last time I moved, 2/3 of my records went to KUSF-in-exile. I don't even have a turntable these days, but I wish I did.
Avatar 3:36am Jeff Conklin:

I don't ever buy anything expensive. If I do, I trade. I like finding cheap, good records...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39am pacific standard simon:

This J.D. Brennan + Gold Fever thing is pretty amazing, too -- it's as if Elvis took an entirely different path in life.
Avatar 3:43am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I don't know if this link will work on here, even though it is very appropriate. pbs.twimg.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am pacific standard simon:

Maybe an alternate universe where Elvis never had the nerve to sing in public, but made private recordings for himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am pacific standard simon:

I groove, you groove, he, she, it grooves. We groove.
Avatar 3:50am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52am pacific standard simon:

Jeff Conklin is a human grooverator.
Avatar 3:53am Jeff Conklin:

I take breaks from grooving though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54am pacific standard simon:

So I see.
Avatar 3:56am datura:

oh hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57am pacific standard simon:

Hmm.. James Brown has never been played on this program...
  3:57am Carly:

This track is amazing!
Avatar 3:58am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

it's a banger
Avatar 4:01am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

this backing track is very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01am pacific standard simon:

There's a psychedelic prehistoric fish on the line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06am pacific standard simon:

Station ID time!
Avatar 4:07am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Avatar 4:08am coelacanth:

is that okay?
Avatar 4:08am Jeff Conklin:

Hey Datura and Carly. Stop being a NARC , Simon
Avatar 4:09am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10am pacific standard simon:

Yep, I took a break from watching Adam-12 re-runs to listen to this show. I was getting too wasted to follow the storylines.
  4:10am turner:

evening jeff, just bluesin down here. fascinating mix so far- stoked on all this scissortail. psyched to jam the rest tomorrow. goodnite!
Avatar 4:11am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks for checking in, Turner. Sleep well...
Avatar 4:13am datura:

i'd like to represent datura this morning.
i'm reminiscing to when i got kicked out of the community gardens for having datura in my plot.
Avatar 4:14am Jeff Conklin:

Now that I think about it, "grooving" was a big term among Kesey and the Pranksters, wasn't it? Used like "going with it". So, in that case, I'm always grooving...
Avatar 4:14am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

that's how I interpret it!
Avatar 4:15am coelacanth:

"groovin'" & "groovy" are underappreciated terms these days....they really do express.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am pacific standard simon:

Brother! I got kicked out of the community gardens for having my dog in there.
Avatar 4:16am coelacanth:

huh...garden nazis.
Avatar 4:16am Jeff Conklin:

I use "groovy" as a response to something I find dumb or disappointing...usually only in text form..
Avatar 4:18am coelacanth:

- but some music just Grooooves!
...it is groovy!
Avatar 4:18am pierre:

Bonjour Jeff and FMUpeeps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19am pacific standard simon:

I'm old enough to use "groovy" sincerely and non-ironically. :(
Avatar 4:21am datura:

(i use it sincerely and non-ironically)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23am pacific standard simon:

Also retain the word "bitchen" as a term of approval for anything post-beat but pre-hippy.
Avatar 4:24am Jeff Conklin:

The cello on this song is playing in a way that reminds me of some old pop song but i cant think of what at the moment
Avatar 4:25am Jeff Conklin:

And..hello, pierre!
Avatar 4:26am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

oh yeah I did not discover that cartoon, it came up on my facebook feed cause Chaz from Bananafish zine posted it on Matt Valentine's wall.
Avatar 4:27am coelacanth:

it reminds me of no pussyfooting.

olá pierre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27am pacific standard simon:

Sorry, got nothing. Reminds me of Eno ambience and Josef Hayden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30am pacific standard simon:

WTF, is there still a Bananafish? I have copies of that zine from twenty-something years ago.
Avatar 4:31am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

no it ended in the early aughts.
Avatar 4:32am coelacanth:

Avatar 4:34am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

it was a classic weirdo music zine from back in the day, which was very important to me when I was young so I namedrop it like it is a common thing everyone knows about, ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am pacific standard simon:

The WWW was the death-knell of the paper zine. Sad but true. I'm sure you can still find some, but it was obvious even 20 years ago.
Avatar 4:36am coelacanth:

hmmm. my scope was apparently woefully inadequate.
Avatar 4:37am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

yeah, I guess Byron Coley's got one now called Bull Tongue Review which is supposed to be good, I haven't checked it yet though.
Avatar 4:38am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

coelacanth, everyone can't know about everything though! There's lots of zines I wish I'd got the chance to check out!
Avatar 4:40am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

oh wait, I forgot we're on the internet. I mean, You haven't heard never read Bananafish, POSER?? What, too busy reading Tiger Beat? Haw haw haw!
Avatar 4:43am Jeff Conklin:

I only know OF those zines. Never read them. I came of age with the blog.
Avatar 4:43am coelacanth:

Thank you. i'll get back to my Bop now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am pacific standard simon:

Science fiction zines preceded music zines; if you want to look at what's happened to them (plus some digital re-publications of old stuff) there's this link:

Avatar 4:45am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

hell yeah, thanks simon! I love stuff like that!
Avatar 4:45am Jeff Conklin:

I was thinking about it today: I really never read any kind of music criticism at all anymore. Besides the abundance of poor writing, it's so easy to hear everything know and form my own opinion fairly quickly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46am pacific standard simon:

On the other hand, the full run of SLASH is online as a pdf. It wasn't a zine, it was a real magazine, but it had that feel. I don't have a link handy.
Avatar 4:48am coelacanth:

i thought about starting one...i mean, any asshole can say shit about music!
Avatar 4:48am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Yeah Jeff, me too! Though actually your email dispatches I do consider to be great music writing, and would probably be over 50% of the music writing I read a month, volume-wise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am pacific standard simon:

I think you've got it right, Jeff. Interpretation, except by the truly inspired, is far less useful these days.
Avatar 4:49am coelacanth:

really,though- that bananafish looks like it would've given me some validation much MUCH sooner.
...i wish i'd known.
Avatar 4:50am Jeff Conklin:

I assume you mean WFMU's emails, Adam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am pacific standard simon:

I like the series of 33 & 1/3 books as an idea, but the reality is often smaller than my dreams.
Avatar 4:52am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

oh woops, I got you mixed up with Scott McDowell, Jeff, sorry I am getting SLEEPY!
Avatar 4:52am coelacanth:

i know nothing....am i enlightened yet?
Avatar 4:53am Jeff Conklin:

Funny, I don't get Scott's emails. I should rectify that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - perhaps your wallet is enlightened...
Avatar 4:54am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

he hasn't written any in a while, I think that's why I got mixed up. And didn't connect that you play way less jazz than he does, ha ha.
Avatar 4:56am Jeff Conklin:

Now to spite you I'll have to do an all jazz show soon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am pacific standard simon:

Hmm, less jazz, yeah. Seems like Jeff could occupy some middle ground, like Sandy Bull. Great late night music.
Avatar 4:56am coelacanth:

this is good contemplative music.
excuse me while i find out if it's good teeth-brushing music.
Avatar 4:58am Jeff Conklin:

I play what I feel like playing and that's the long and short of it. I'm by no means averse to jazz but there's little new stuff I find interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59am pacific standard simon:

The FMU DJ slots considered as a game of Go.
Avatar 5:00am Jeff Conklin:

It's funny though, most of the radio I listen to at home is jazz programming ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am pacific standard simon:

I see that you have played some Sandy Bull on this show.
Avatar 5:05am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I love what Jeff plays, I am not saying he should play more, or less jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07am Wynford Eagle:

Mornin' all. great show jeff, zoning out to this arica track.....(in a wet and windy west dorset, uk, 10 am)
Avatar 5:09am mintyfresh:

D.O. radio got me covered, when i want jazz.
- i'm very particular about my jazz. most of it's terrible these days, but the occasional bits of it on fmu are welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am pacific standard simon:

@AdamFromOldeKenzo - The idea is to introduce the people you know to what you know, so they can choose more than what they would have chosen previously.
Avatar 5:10am coelacanth:

greetings Wynford Eagle
  5:10am greysquad:

mutant sounds? great, great, blog while it lasted... but you can still get most of that stuff on soulseek.
Avatar 5:12am Jeff Conklin:

I suppose you can still read about the records on MS and then go to SLSK but its not quite the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13am pacific standard simon:

I have to say that D:O radio does not have me covered, good as it is. There is so much more to jazz that is beautiful.
Avatar 5:13am Jeff Conklin:

D:O is great. WKCR is great. WBGO is great
Avatar 5:16am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I am 35 so I got into the zine era kind of late, but found Bananafish, Forced Exposure, and Ptolemaic Terrascope back issues in bins for cheap!
  5:17am greysquad:

I was "friends" with mutant sounds on SLSK before he started his blog... you are right though that it felt more personal on the blog... but slsk is way better than ex sites like rapidshare, mediafire ect. ect.
Avatar 5:17am Jeff Conklin:

I bought PT actually..
Avatar 5:17am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

and I'd end up hearing Mutant Sounds blog stuff from other friends because I didn't have a computer then. It does still seem like another, more magical time though, ha ha
Avatar 5:20am coelacanth:

yes,in the grand scheme of things,i know i agree with you simon. right now i'm very focused on other things and destination:out satiates my occasional want for jazz...i listen to the cds and records in my own collection more than i do D.O.
...i'm very Thankful for it though.
Avatar 5:20am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I guess I actually found a stack of PT back issues without the 7"s in a free box at this record store in Minneapolis. Good haul!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am pacific standard simon:

Used finds are always good. I'm still digging through Jeff's radio station pointers.
  5:23am ?:

"D:O is great"
Jeff while I liked the show when it was pure jazz, I FOUND THEIR MIXING of genres now to be confusing and boring - last week they had a desert rock special! I mean there is enough great Jazz - free, modern, Avant, Hard Bop etc to make everyone happy.
Don't see a reason to mix rock in!
Avatar 5:25am coelacanth:

(the D.O. premium cd from last year is in high esteem over here too,for what it's worth!)
Avatar 5:25am Jeff Conklin:

Ah, I like when they shake things up, ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27am pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - I got that one too!
  5:28am ?:

but to move away from what you are or believe in- to satisfy listener targets etc. is a cop out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28am pacific standard simon:

Sounds like Harvey Mandel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30am pacific standard simon:

@? - No one is set in stone.
Avatar 5:30am Jeff Conklin:

There's no way D:O does anything to satisfy anybody but themselves.
Avatar 5:30am coelacanth:

'dug that Jessie Lee Vortis. 'never heard it before.
Avatar 5:31am Jeff Conklin:

And like it or not, we do what we want here. You can ride along or tune out ;)
  5:31am ?:

plus there is now quickie magic hour show that Jeff Gorlick is doing on a Monday - sort a funky pop thing - yes WFmU is freeform but why paly the same stuff as everyone else!
  5:33am ?:

If you remember the D:O blog of old - fiercely Avant Jazz, all the links to great Jazz sites. No rock, no pop!
Avatar 5:35am Jeff Conklin:

People's tastes change/expand. I have no problem with that. When you do radio for a long time, it's bound to happen.
Avatar 5:37am coelacanth:

  5:38am ?:

I just get the impression that they don't like it when no one comments during a 30 minute Ornette set, or a Vandermark 5 record, William Parker etc
Avatar 5:39am coelacanth:

Jeff,i ought to get to sleep before i have to get up.
Thank you!
ciao people, and others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41am pacific standard simon:

And aside from what Jeff C. has said, D:O is the product of two different minds, both named "Jeff". The Magic Hour is Jeff Golick alone.

@? - I think your impressions are dead wrong.
Avatar 5:42am Jeff Conklin:

I think that's a real reach, ?.

Goodnight, Coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44am pacific standard simon:

Thank the lard that I am on Pacific time. It is only 2:45 here.
  5:45am ?:

Jeff - you are more destination out than they presently are!
  5:46am ?:

its 10.45am here in Manchester UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48am pacific standard simon:

Ooh, Hot Tuna.
Avatar 5:49am Jeff Conklin:

@> - I'm in and out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49am pacific standard simon:

I'm pretty proud to be able to identify Will Scarlett's harp playing that quickly.
  5:51am ?:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57am pacific standard simon:

I like you in this slot, but make yourself comfortable.
  5:57am bnrsstlfr:

Thanks Jeff.
Avatar 5:58am Jeff Conklin:

honest to God, this slot is a killer for me. it takes me at least 90 minutes to get here. if its my only option, ill tough it out for as long as it takes though ;)
Avatar 5:59am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, bnrsstlfr
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01am pacific standard simon:

I'll track you down if you go elsewhere. My work schedule is weird.
