Greetings, all. Today's "Tape Hiss"" will lean in a proggy direction -- relatively speaking, at least.

How do, Tony and all! Mine is the skeleton on the left.

Hello, Tony & everyone. I'm ridiculously excited to be able to tune-in your show real time today.

Hi, Tony! I'm as ready for hissing prog as I'll ever be.

Hello Gaylord!

Mayuko! Gaylord!! Welcome to you both!!!!

Gaylord: Hope you're wearing your Viking helmet, or at least a jester's cap.

Hello to you, Mayuko!

Tony Coulter:

So, apparently Swedes do not believe in apostrophes. If they did, this group's name would be Johan Hedrén's Anna Gram.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Gaylord Fields:

Tony, as always, I'm wearing many hats, all piled atop one another. But this time, I've figured out to wear the largest and flattest hat as the bottom layer.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I will award an all-expenses-paid trip to Nowheresville to anyone who recognizes the LP beneath today's cassettes.
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh well, better luck next time, contestants. It's Brent Wilcox's "Executive Lullabies" (as seen in this truly subpar discogs photo: www.discogs.com... )
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Kool: Hey there! That Debile Menthol tape is very early stuff of theirs -- pretty different from the LPs. Their roots!
Avatar 12:21pm
βrian:

Just had a fiery encounter with pad thai and chili paste. My ears are ringing which is an odd accompaniment to the Débile Menthol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Gary:

I'm usually unable to hear this (weekly meeting at work) but am able to listen in today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

Loving this so far. I'm editing a new piece of text, pitched as 7K words, that's actually 20K. This tape is quelling my grumpiness.
Avatar 12:25pm
βrian:

So edit the first 7000 and call it good!
Avatar 12:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Weird! The last bunch of comments just appeared all at once.

Anyway, greets βrian and Gary!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
listener james from westwood:

@Gary: For a good year and a half, a weekly Wednesday meeting poked a nasty hole in the Nazario Scenario. Then that client went away. It was win-win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
listener james from westwood:

βrian: Don't think that hasn't occurred to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Gaylord Fields:

I'm enjoying doing work to this music as well. It's quite conducive to the task of tasking.
Avatar 12:32pm

Plus, you get to improve your Swedish at the same time.

I just failed a big presentation and was feeling sad, but this show is putting an end to my grumpiness too! Thank you. Also helping out work here.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Sorry to hear about the presentation, Mayuko -- I'm sure the problem was all theirs..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Mayuko: So sorry for your problem presentation. Music is always good medicine to soothe the pain and discomfort. Let Dr. Tony give you the cure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm

@Tony Coulter: Tack så mycket!
Avatar 12:42pm

Du är välkommen, Gaylordius.

Tony Coulter:

By the by, Johan Hedren is the band's keyboard man.
Avatar 12:46pm
Mayuko:

Thank you, Tony, Gaylord. I'm assuming they didn't take my work because it was maybe a little too weird for their project. Listening to WFMU might not help the problem of being weird, haha! I'm happy to be listening to these music nonetheless.
Avatar 12:47pm
Carmichael:

Heya Tony and Hissers. Enjoying this Johan Hedrens.
Avatar 12:48pm

I once had a one-minute endless loop cassette that I used as background for laying music composition/improvisation. Those were the days!

Hola, Carmichael!

I await your Portland shopping report.

Maestro Rhythm King...that was the name of my beatbox. Hi Tony!
  12:51pm
Dean:

Oooh, Sten Sandell issued recordings on this label.
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean! Indeed he did.
Avatar 12:57pm
βrian:

I'm guessing that's pronounced as "mawn-tall."
Avatar 12:57pm
Carmichael:

Nothing earth-shattering, Tony. I had my family in tow, so not much time to browse as the music deserves. I did end up with some Earl Bostic and Mugsy Spanier, as well as a cool Jan and Dean FOLK album. Some good lounge/exotica stuff, a mad preacher ranting about Satan, and a Canadian horn rock band called Skywalk that seems pretty good. That's about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
listener james from westwood:

Sorry it went ill, Mayuko! They'll regret not taking you on when they see what you do for the party that says yes!
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Yes, I think you're right re the pronunciation. Thought I'd strike a middle ground between French and English so as not to lose that refreshing mentholated flavor.
Avatar 1:01pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Sounds like a good haul to me.

There are a few others, but they are just random weirdness. Plus, I had to save some dough for Powell's Books.

@james Thank you! a Japanese saying says when there's a god who dump you there's always another god who picks you up, like you said hopefully some other parties will be happy with me!

Hippees are punks/punks are hippees. Punk was Progressive! D.I.Y. Lives.

That's no middle ground! That's the English Channel!
Avatar 1:16pm

I wonder where this was recorded (side A). I was probably in France at the time. If only I knew …
Avatar 1:16pm

Greets, Punk/Prog! Oi, far out!
  1:17pm
Dean:

Time to break out the Release Music Orchestra and Secret Oyster!
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Brian: Was recorded in Switzerland, in August of 1980, perhaps at a club called Local (the subtitle of the cassette is "Inédits au Local Aout 80")
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

... though I'm guessing they just mean recorded at different local clubs....
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Or Local could be the name of a studio -- might be live in studio. Who knows!?!
Avatar 1:29pm
Carmichael:

Well, my building just lost power. Have to log back into everything again ...
Avatar 1:36pm
βrian:

I think "au local" means "on the premises," or some such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
listener james from westwood:

Aaahh, my sympathies, Carmichael, I hate when that happens!
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Perhaps then they mean this stuff was recorded "at home," in the band's own lair.
  1:41pm
Art Damage:

Check out Dislocation Dance/Angelic Upstarts etc..Far out Oi!
Avatar 1:42pm
Carmichael:

I really like this Debile Menthol!
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

As I just said on mic, the sound quality is crappy for about 10 minutes here on side B, then perks up considerably.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Débile Menthol's two LPs have been reissued on one double CD and are well worth a listen: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
listener james from westwood:

They were a bit Débile-itated, but it just perked up.
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Sorts of sounds like whoever was recording this suddenly woke up and started twiddling with the treble.
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: The Menthol kicked in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

Gotta dash...I've been enjoying the program, Tony.

Hello there, Mr. NGH!
Avatar 2:28pm
Mayuko:

That first track was quite funny and I like the sound of this cassette. I can't understand the lyrics but feels like listening to an irrational life story of some stranger.
Avatar 2:28pm
βrian:

I could imagine this making small children cry.
Avatar 2:36pm
Tony Coulter:

They have a bunch of cassettes -- but I've never heard any of the others. They were a sort of performance group (just two people, though), in San Francisco.
