Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options August 20, 2015: 5 Conversations - Dan, Kangaroo, Flint, Iowa 70's Rock, New Flash!

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
Steely Dan  Fire In The Hole   Options Can't Buy A Thrill  ABC  1972  LP    0:00:00 (Pop‑up)
Woman and Man in Union Square Park
Another Union Square Park show. It may seema s if I haven't been particularly creative about the location(s) for the show. In recent months (years?) I've done a lot of interviews in Union Square and at Penn Station/Madison Square Garden. They are both close to our loft. These days I generally get off work on Tuesday or Wednesday and I walk down to the park hoping to snag maybe an hours worth of interview footage. It's a good location all-in-all. It skews pretty young. Lots of oddballs (I say, affectionately) punks, chess players, drug addicts, conversationalists, Hari Krishna-enthusiasts, hacky-sackers, b-boys, preachers, folk musicians, chalk artists, kale salesmen --- I dream of desert shows, out and amongst the rocks and cacti ... in the company of the scorpion and the burning sun ... a solitary crow for a companion. Ol' Joe. Some jerky. Ample water. A casette of Mahavihshnu's Birds of Fire. Extra batteries. Eventually I would encounter an old-school Dairy Queen™.
John Hall  Nu Toone   Options Action  Columbia  1970  LP  A sentimental old childhood favorite. Discovering the magic of ON SALE $2 LPs. Lost this one for years. Bought it on EBAY. The memories came flooding back.  0:12:21 (Pop‑up)
Kangaroo  Such A Long Long Time   Options Kangaroo  MGM  1968  MP3  John Hall's old psych band. Wish I had this on vinyl  0:16:27 (Pop‑up)
5-Gallon Bucket Drummer / Bill - Ex Probation Officer (Long Island)
Duane & Greg Allman  Morning Dew   Options   Bold  1972  LP  Sessions for a band called The 31st of February.  0:25:04 (Pop‑up)
Interview with Latia the RN, In Union Square Park
Oh my dear Lord, these interviews are getting looooong these days. Sorry.
Flint  One of Me   Options Flint  Columbia  1978  MP3  Don Brewer, Mel Schacher, Craig Frost of Grand Funk ... without Mark Farner. GFR Was from Flint, MI ---- An album I've been meaning to check out forever, but just got around to it. I was a big Grand Funk fan. How far can you throw a 6" comb?  0:32:31 (Pop‑up)
Trinidadian Math Whiz.
Westminist'r  My Life   Options   Magic  1974  MP3  Fort Dodge, Iowa-based band. I used to see them as a kid in SW Iowa. Great band.  0:43:04 (Pop‑up)
The Squad in Union Square Park!
Flash  10,000 Movies   Options Featuring Ray Bennett and Colin Carter  Purple Pyramid  2013  Minidisc  Classic '70's British prog band. The late Peter Banks started Flash when he left Yes. He was asked to participate on this record, but declined. Flash bassist, Ray Bennett, takes over the guitar duties here. Colin Carter on vocals. New drummer and keyboardist. Made me happy to see some old prog warriors do something new. More power to them!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm coelacanth:

  6:32pm JakeGould:

What this lady is saying about freelancing is pretty much on point. Even if you are highly skilled, you will be treated as if you are disposable in some fields.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm melinda:

P-90 so true.
Avatar 6:32pm Gabbroboccia:

Is Biden gonna run?
Avatar 6:33pm bobdoesthings:

good evening
  6:33pm JakeGould:

I’m for Bernie Sanders but—being honest as a Jew—but I wonder how he plays in the South. I mean I cannot picture states that are angry about the Confederate flag going away voting a Jew into office. At least not now.
  6:34pm P-90:

Nice lady but sorry, not the sharpest tack in the box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm steve:

Jake I dont think those people were gonna vote for Hillary either...
Avatar 6:34pm Sean B.:

Believe it or not it's gonna come down to Jeb & Hillary = NO DOUBT.
Avatar 6:35pm MenfussMike:

yea i'm voting for hilary cause she went to an all woman's college too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm melinda:

I thought she was fairly sharp, just wrong on some things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm coelacanth:

P-90 -some lights on, some flickering.
Avatar 6:35pm Gabbroboccia:

How bout Jesse Ventura?
Avatar 6:36pm Slick Goldtooth:

Thing is there are nursing gigs out there and in demand, the very large BUT is these places tend to be out in not necessarily the most sexy regions of the U.S. and the pay is not exactly the most ideal for someone coming straight out of schooling. What ends up happening is people settle, gain the experience, get outta dodge and take on the trickier areas for jobs with that bit of experience.

All in all its a crap shoot, not a nurse myself but friends with a number of em
  6:36pm JakeGould:

@steve: Or maybe it could be a positive prejudice? Where any-Semites think, “Well, the Jews run the world right? So this guy is a ‘good’ Jew.” I mean I don’t know how racists think but who knows. I want Bernie!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Uncle Michael:

Don Cougar Mellencraig?

Avatar 6:39pm Clay Pigeon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm coelacanth:

Avatar 6:39pm Sean B.:

Terry = No joke!.
Avatar 6:41pm Gabbroboccia:

Clay - Has anyone been upset at how you've edited them?
Avatar 6:42pm bobdoesthings:

  6:44pm Old Dave:

He doesn't have a SSN. Too bad! When you do your next immigration show, I will be listening.
  6:45pm P-90:

Wait, enough Southerners and Midwesterners voted for B. Obama, but won't for B. Sanders?
And won't at least a few think they're voting for COLONEL Sanders?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm coelacanth:

Avatar 6:46pm dale:

Avatar 6:47pm bobdoesthings:

I think people are easy to write off all of the south and central areas as right leaning.. when sometimes it's surprising to see the states that comeup blue.. but I avoid politics entirely

  6:50pm JakeGould:

Bleech… “Rubbernecking” for Elvis? Bleagh… Such a bad song!
Avatar 6:50pm Polyus:

So many small Midwestern towns had bar bands like Westminist'r, didn't they Clay? Is that still a thing? There was one near where I grew up called Force, they seemed like rock gods to me as a young'un.
Avatar 6:50pm Clay Pigeon:

Thanks for the reminder. I am filling in on Music To Spazz By NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT ! pLEASE TUne iN! Coelo ... I know. Didn't mean to omit Densmore.
Avatar 6:51pm Clay Pigeon:

Wow. Force rings a bell. It's true, Polyus. There were many fantastic regional artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm coelacanth:

the end. that song redeems them from all the horrible crap they did later.
Avatar 6:52pm Polyus:

I wonder if a lot of that passed when the drinking age went from 18 to 21?
Avatar 6:53pm Clay Pigeon:
