Totally heard the title of the Sons of the Pioneers cut now on the stream as "When the Golden Rain Comes Down." Not my cup of tea, but hey, what happens on the trail, stays on the trail.

Ahhhh, "Ghostbusters." The author of a book I just finished editing started his chapter on executive assistants and other gatekeepers with the "I am the Keymaster ... are you the Gatekeeper?" quote.

That was about as good as I did in my actual seventh-grade typing class.

What, they handed you a blue pencil and told you to get lost? (Do they even offer typing classes anymore. Painful but damn useful, I think.)

doctorjazz:

Hi all, nice track by Warren Smith (just got in and started DO up first thing).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Jeff Golick:

I am still incredibly grateful for my 5th (?) grade typing classes, on some giant IBM selectrics. Seems as invaluable a skill as ever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
listener james from westwood:

I covet the typing skills it theoretically imparted far less than the manual typewriter on which I learned them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am
Jeff Golick:

Rise and shine on, @doctorjazz! Warren Smith is a treasure.
Avatar 9:42am

Manual? Did they make you do pinky push-ups as a part of your training regimen?

Cassette? Not 8-track??
Avatar 10:07am

Still waiting for the 8-track to make a comeback... seems like the one format that hasn't had a retro renaissance. Or maybe I just missed it?

Don't know Warren Smth's music well, familiar name, a new avenue to check out. Heading to Amazon...
Avatar 10:11am
Jeff J:

Such odd burbling bass sounds on this Syreeta cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am
Artie Haywire:

7th grade typing class did impart a valuable skill, along with an outdated propensity to add two spaces after every period. Like that. Then HTML came along and started condensing two into one. Life's complicated. Yep.
Avatar 🥁 10:14am
duke:

Hi D:Oers I'm under the influence of a groove
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14am
doctorjazz:

7th grade typing was something I managed to avoid using until the past 10 years (it was possible until relatively recently not to type), finally getting decent at it.
Avatar 10:15am
Jeff J:

Hey ya, Duke! Us, too. And a rubber-y one, at that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: some of Smith's recent, small-label stuff can be found at bandcamp, too: warrensmithnaturalculturalforces.bandcamp.com... eugenechadbourneoddtime.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Artie Haywire:

So glad I wore my lamé jumpsuit today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Jeff Golick:

@Artie! Hey-a! I have an OCD-like propensity to delete that second space after a period.... We'd get on well.
Avatar 10:18am
Jeff J:

It's a fashion always in style, Artie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am
Jeff Golick:

Are they saying, "oh so sheepy?"
Avatar 10:21am
βrian:

I thought so, too, but my cat begs to differ. No lamé for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Artie Haywire:

Typographic pretensions vs. muscle memory. Different days, different winners. Doomed to be erratic. Can OCD be bent to support rigid adherence to randomness of behavior? Is this how the Buddha got started? Or was that Rangda?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jeff Golick:

I don't think OCD can be bent.

BTW, me and the missus finished season one of Homeland last night. Can anyone out there offer an opinion on whether we should go on to season two?
Avatar 10:28am
Jeff J:

I started Season Two and the first few episodes are fine, but then it gets *terrible.* Even less plausible than "24." Apparently the first season was based on an Israeli show and they didn't have anything to copy for the 2nd season.
Avatar 10:29am
Jeff J:

"Homeland" was filmed in Charlotte, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am
Jeff Golick:

Ah. Yes, thanks, JJ. It felt very much as though it should've been a one-arc show: one season, goodbye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am
listener james from westwood:

I am hearing very good things about "Deutschland '83." I am considering watching that alongside another show I haven't seen yet, "The Americans," for a Cold War nostalgia daily double.
Avatar 10:31am
Jeff J:

Agreed - and the final episode had a clear ending that they chickened out and didn't see through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Polyus:

I missed Bertha Baptist - is she the anti-Bertha Butt?
Avatar 10:32am
Jeff J:

@LJFW, I haven't seen "Deutschland" but the first two seasons of "The Americans" are remarkable and very worth seeing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Polyus! Based on the song, Bertha Baptist also gets down!
Avatar 10:34am
Jeff J:

@Polyus - She's got her own righteous funk!
Avatar 10:37am
Jeff J:

James "Blood" Ulmer on this Roots track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
Jeff Golick:

It would be interesting to parse the underlying politics of these shows - Homeland, The Americans, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Jeff Golick:

Also, the main character of Homeland is a jazz fan - this seems to mark her as an eccentric genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
listener james from westwood:

Good to hear re: "Americans." I don't have cable, so my TV consumption is python-like: swallow a DVD season compilation, then wait a few months. Although I do go iTunes for stuff that I've gotten hooked on mid-show. Currently have Season 3 of "Veep" for the weekend's entertainment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
listener james from westwood:

Jeff, one assumes a certain amount of this traces back to "24," esp. for "Homeland."

Veep is the real deal. Love that show, though I'm not up to date with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am

Oh hells yes, glad to hear another cut from the "Truck Turner" track. Tarantino used another peppy track from this film in "Kill Bill Vol. 1."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
listener james from westwood:

Every film should have a soundtrack entry titled "Pursuit of the Pimpmobile."
Avatar 10:55am
Jeff J:

Agreed, @LJFW! And Tarantino has great taste for recasting soundtrack material in his own films.
Avatar 10:56am
βrian:

Is there a diamond in the back?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
listener james from westwood:

I'll be very disappointed if none of the cars pursuing the pimpmobile crashed into a fruit stand, as is federal law for all action films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
listener james from westwood:

βrian: I hope so! Maybe that's why they're pursuing the pimpmobile.
Avatar 🥁 11:01am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

... ☆ ...or it could be 'pursuit' as in acquiring exactly the perfectly appointed ride, each segment impressionistically correlating to a specific vehicular feature...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
listener james from westwood:

Either that pimpmobile
(a) was caught,
(b) eluded pursuers who found it empty, or
(c) went over a cliff and exploded in a glorious 1970s fireball
Avatar 11:06am
Jeff J:

@LJFW - I'm hoping for option (c) - but not before crashing through a few fruit stands!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jeff Golick:

The pimpmobile loses at least one hupcap, too, I"m pretty sure.
Avatar 11:08am
Jeff J:

I'm guessing this also means we should all watch TRUCK TURNER at some point. Need to see that pimpmobile in action.

Back to TV for a sec? Anyone out there give Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp a chance? I watched, but was disappointed. All the eps should've stopped after each awesome opening sequence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: (((guffaw))))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
listener james from westwood:

A show full of opening scenes would have been better, maybe. Sounds like the way Hunter Thompson said he tried to write, each sentence of a piece like the lede of a story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

Reminds me that I've been meaning to read I, THE DIVINE: A Novel in First Chapters, by Rabih Alameddine, for a while now...
