Options Brian Turner: Playlist from July 21, 2015 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Hello Brian!
Avatar 3:06pm coelacanth:

Jake- here 'tis! : www.pbase.com...

Hi Brian and All
Avatar 3:07pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth: Oh yeah! I remember seeing slightly more beat up versions of those trucks around Brooklyn in the 1970s, but same basic shape.
Avatar 3:09pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

holy heck, pulcinella!
Avatar 3:10pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

also: greetings, meatbeans.
Avatar 3:14pm coelacanth:

well,it's a testimonial to how much more resilient-and repairable things were made back then. people didn't just throw stuff out. they made them last.
Avatar 3:14pm fred:

@RTD: have symptoms of tiki withdrawal abated by now?
  3:17pm r i s k y:

  3:18pm Rory:

Hot Damn!
Avatar 3:22pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

No tiki withdrawal needed! I adopted many of them to keep me company inna studio...
Avatar 3:24pm fred:

I guess this is not Hijokaidan's Jojo
  3:25pm Mark:

I thought Vito Ricci was Bill Cosby for a minute. Like that Christmas record Joe Belock played last year.
Avatar 3:25pm Cecile:

hey artists, I'm getting back in the cartooning game. Derwent is OK for fancy drawing, but I'm looking for a workhorse wood pencil to do penciling that will erase nicely. Any ideas?
Avatar 3:26pm Cecile:

I still hate cassettes. Great stuff on them, but ew.
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

I think cassettes should be a stepping stone.
  3:31pm 3P0:

I have Cassettes 50 Years old that still work fine~/Will Cd's /Mp3s?
Avatar 3:32pm Cecile:

I'll be dead by then, or at least not worried about it.
  3:34pm Mark:

Collector's World just ran a long article about cassette culture and traders and companies that specialized in them. Fascinating stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm steve:

i looove that Jojo track, ive listened to it like 30 times since Swagmas came last week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm steve:

wtf drum machine does the snare drum in that song. its so grimy
Avatar 3:41pm Cecile:

I didn't trade, but I knew traders, and own a number of good cassettes both homebrew and commercial. But I just never enjoyed the whole rewinding thing. Hard to skip through them too.
  3:44pm 3P0:

From a historical/replayable/aspect I hope all is not lost to modern technology.
Avatar 3:45pm Polyus:

In 50 years it will all be neural implants anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm steve:

im not a big cassette guy but part of the appeal to me is the inconvenience of skipping around, being forced to sit there and listen... the ease of having all i want all the time (i.e. neurotically clicking around my iTunes library and anything-you-want-in-30-seconds private torrent sites) ultimately has a kind of numbing effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm chris:

sooner than that, i'd guess, Polyus...
  3:49pm ScienceFriction:

It's here $ now. welcome to the past as present & future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@steve: I find now it's more about the having access to it all - in itself: a billion channels, & it's about seeing what's on - not watching anything! My attention span has deffo changed. It's all about streams & podcasts being constantly updated & which I'll never ever catch up w/...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...altho' the streams & 'casts I favor feature a good %age of 'Retro'...)
Avatar 3:57pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth: “people didn't just throw stuff out. they made them last.” Post war industrialization will do that to a manufacturing infrastructure. same reason why tons of Japanese toys from the 1950s to 1970s are all made with amazing, intricate quality. You have a whole infrastructure built around creating precision tools for war but there is no war so what can you do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm steve:

ha, yeah lately ive been concerned about my attention span too
Avatar 3:59pm JakeGould:

Stop paying attention to your attention span, but instead focus on the attention girth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like - we jokingly call it the 'British Invasion' - but all those London managers were in fact products of the fallen Empire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm common:

great to come in on the fall hello!
  4:06pm Marquee Smith:

A great/drunken leader who will fire his complete band -New Fall fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm chris:

nadrag = pants, according to the goog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm chris:

hi, common!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm common:

how goes it, chris?
Avatar 4:13pm JakeGould:

@RevRabbitNov63: So basically, if an empire is defeated their residual art will be amazing, right?
Avatar 4:14pm Cecile:

people used to complain about us 80s kids being wasteful, but we were like depression kids compared to a lot of people today, greenmarketing notwithstanding.
Avatar 4:16pm JakeGould:

@Cecile: Depends on which part of the 1980s. The mid-to-later part of the 1980s Reaganomics was making the U.S. really a piggish mess. Earlier in the 1980s it was just like the 1970s in many ways.
Avatar 4:17pm Chris from DC:

yay, Gordons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Jake: hm - dunno. I just mean the UK biz guys had some organizing skills & ambition. People like the Beatles themselves were Post-War in other ways...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...far as I'm concerned, it was certainly a drag to leave home & hit the real world just as Reagan's 80s began. I'm right in there w/ the Grungemeisters, age-wise...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm chris:

its going ok, common... i shouldn't complain... all my faculties are with me until i want them not to be... you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm chris:

i really like this Henry Blacker track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm common:

@chris: still kinda shitty, but still here. and all of these tunes are helping!
Avatar 4:26pm Cecile:

Well, in a lot of places, but where I was, the indie/DIY/punk crowd took pride in being pretty frugal, mostly out of necessity, but they never really went crazy when they got money.
  4:37pm BriJet:

Hi Brian!!!

Avatar 4:42pm Cecile:

hola, SheWolf. Just got my copy of What We Do In The Shadows today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The bizness model of making things well, so you'll like me & do biz w/ me - deffo went the way of Trickle Down economics. The rich are rich & they are not hiring & do not care about you. It's a nice old WWII idea of things that you could only belive in if you haven't paid attention to reality for several decades. Make a buck as fast as you can - screw workers, screw the environment, screw consumers, screw the country. We don't know the product or the customer, & we don't care - it's owned by a larger co. which is owned by an even larger one - we are biznessmen & lawyers & we are useless. Music is just the canary in the coalmine for illustrating this. It's yer food & shoes & housing & job as well...It only *looks* the same as it used to be on the surface.
Avatar 4:44pm SheWolf:

Sweet as. It's coming soon from Netflix for me.
Avatar 4:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 4:44pm Cecile:

It has 2 hours of extras!

Avatar 4:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Yayness! I missed the myriad of opportunities to see the J Dog face to face earlier this year when WWDITS was in NYC. I'm hoping he'll be back in few weeks for the release of his next film.
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

Here's crossing my fingers for you. Maybe. hahahha
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

I really thought when the Walker was doing "indigenous" films that Boy would have been screened with a Q&A from Taika Waititi. Nope.
Avatar 4:58pm Cecile:

oooh, crimson!
Avatar 5:00pm SheWolf:

Oh Taika whored himself here many times for Boy. He's a whore, BTW.
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

hahhaahahha. He just never managed to get his stuff over here.
Avatar 5:01pm SheWolf:

I have a dislike/like for him. I did dislike him somewhat but then met him and it was hard to keep that up.
Avatar 5:03pm Cecile:

I guess in interviews, J-Dog first felt the same way. Speaking of hoes:
Avatar 5:04pm SheWolf:

Bwahahaha! I don't do twitter so thanks for that.
Avatar 5:05pm SheWolf:

But seriously he's a slut. With VERY alluring eyes.
Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:08pm Cecile:

I dig his tats, seriously.
Avatar 5:09pm SheWolf:

Cecile are you on Facebook?
Avatar 5:10pm Cecile:

no, just twitter. hahahhahahahaha!
Avatar 5:10pm SheWolf:

Oh he's a fine looking man, no doubt.
Avatar 5:14pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:15pm Chris M.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:15pm Cecile:

or is this Armageddon right now?
Avatar 5:16pm Cecile:

yeah, it is. never mind about the other band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Captain Beyond connections? Oh - I'll just do wigkey...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:19pm Cecile:

only 2 live shows? man they sound like they were coming from 2 years on the road. Tight stuff.
Avatar 5:20pm Cecile:

I dig this downer rock genocide vibe.
Avatar 5:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

....what Cecile said. That.
  5:22pm noiser:

Fyre Balls? Jesus!
Avatar 5:24pm Cecile:

I like their subtlety
Avatar 5:24pm Marcel M:

Hello Brian and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm chris:

that was helluva ripper set, BT
Avatar 5:25pm Marcel M:

I've had the pleasure of going to WAH WAH. Amazing selection. But those European record prices... YOW!
Avatar 5:27pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:27pm Marcel M:

Wow... Cluster playing in front of a Weird Al back drop... Brain... processing.... please... hold..
Avatar 5:29pm Cecile:

Marcel, that is the most WFMU thing that has happened ever.
Avatar 5:29pm Cecile:

who curated that one? Albini?
Avatar 5:30pm Cecile:

no GYBE!
Avatar 5:32pm Marcel M:

@Cecile: hehe, true! Was Big Al wearing a Woof Moo shirt?
Avatar 5:33pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:37pm Brian Turner:

No, But Al did email me when I was at ATP when I asked if I could record his performance to take back to WFMU (I took The Ex, Country Teasers, a few others with me). He said he loved FMU, and especially Scharpling, but the logistics of his audio set up and engineering for live shows would mean that it would be next to impossible to get it sounding good for radio. But still...
Avatar 5:39pm Cecile:

that is so cool, Brian.
Avatar 5:40pm Brian Turner:

I belive he also did a blurb for the Scharpling Numero box that just came out.
Avatar 5:43pm Marcel M:

Did you enjoy the show Saturday, Brian? I was tempted to see them again that night at Palisades but didn't make it happen.
Avatar 5:45pm Brian Turner:

Wolf Eyes! Yeah! Any chance to see what patches John Olson has added to his sleeveless denim jacket is always good enough reason to get out of the house.
Avatar 5:48pm Marcel M:

Haha. I hadn't seen them with the new member yet, so it was not what I was expecting but I did enjoy it.
Avatar 5:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Jeezus. Masterful segue there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Philthy woman:
