Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Gaylord Fields:

@doca: Hi!
  5:17pm P-90:

Felicitations, Gaylord and Gaylordevotees!
Inviting, unusually contemplative tone to these first few selections. And I am thereby hooked, as usual...
Avatar 5:17pm dale:

these sounds always mark the unofficial winding down of the weekend. a gin and tonic is starting to kick in.
Avatar 5:18pm dale:

so many songs of the 70s involve statutory rape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Gaylord Fields:

Hello, @P-90 @dale!
  5:19pm cheri:

i'm glad to be here, gayloed! thanks for the tunes
  5:19pm P-90:

@dale: but in a good way
  5:19pm sugarwolf:

My day has been sooooo bad but I get to drive home listening to Gaylord now. I don't even care if there's traffic!
  5:19pm P-90:

I went there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: As does much of the late 60s, including most of Gary Puckett's hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm steve:

hi Gaylord. what a sweet song about mammas. if i'm following correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dale: - is why these wanted to sleep thru it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: I'll try to give you that "driveway moment."
Avatar 5:21pm dale:

how did benny mardones never get arrested?
  5:22pm P-90:

@Gaylord: never thought of Gary Puckett as a specialist in those themes. But now that you mention it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm common:

gaylord! my favorite scritti song. in my head this morn! thanks
  5:23pm cheri:

ohh Gaylord, instead Elton, maybe you could play "Fridays child" by nancy Sinatra ok?
  5:24pm SisterII:

@cheri got to get on her meds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@cheri: TBH, I won't promise you I'll do any requests. This show isn't really set up for that. I hope you will enjoy what I do program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Ike:

HOLY crap! A new addition to the repertoire?! I'm bowled over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm steve:

P-90, if i'm not mistaken, Tom Scharpling dubbed Puckett "The Sleaziest Rocker of All Time"
Avatar 5:26pm dale:

young girl.....lady willpower...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Gaylord Fields:

Let's all play nice here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale @P-90 And especially "This Girl Is a Woman Now"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm steve:

This Girl is a Woman Now... simply horrifying
Avatar 5:28pm dale:

YES...don't know why i couldn't think of that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Gaylord Fields:

@common: Let's hear it for synergy!
  5:28pm cheri:

I always enjoy your tunes, Gaylord. I undersatand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm common:

@gaylord: no kiddin!
Avatar 5:32pm JakeGould:

@cheri: I don’t believe it’s your birthday and I don’t believe you are incapable of getting a sign in account. Please just go away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@steve: I can see Gary Puckett showing up at the poor young lady's house with a birthday cake and a gift for her to unwrap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Gaylord Fields:

Hey, everyone: No one's behavior here has crossed any line. Thanks for your concern, but I'll dismiss people if they go too far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm steve:

i don't know whether to laugh or shudder Gaylord!
Avatar 5:36pm JakeGould:

I just ate fries and I am happy.
Avatar 5:37pm Jim Price:

Great Beach Boys song. Carl plays all the instruments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Ĩkє:

Once we were talking about you-know-who while volunteering and one FMU staffer said, "Actually I like it when the commenters self-police," and I thought, "Wait, what? Aren't we supposed to let the DJ do that? I'm so confused." Thanks for clearing it up for us, Gaylord, at least for the next 83 minutes.
  5:37pm marmalade kitty:

Love carl wilson stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Gaylord Fields:

@Jim Price: If there's any upside to Brian going bonkers, it's Carl's ascendancy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Real Nitty Gritty Tania:

Cornelius! Which album is this, Gaylord? I remember when Fantasma came out it blew me away! the confluence of so many genres I love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@Ike: It's okay to interact or not interact with people, and you may get your desired result if you choose wisely.
  5:39pm P-90:

"This Girl is a Woman Now" went all the way to #2 on the "Billboard Easy Listening/Statutory Chart" in 1969, according to Wikipedopedia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@Real Nitty Gritty Tania: It's 69/96.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm steve:

i can't even believe This Girl is a Woman Now can be played on the radio.
Avatar 5:41pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Why is that weird? A self-cleaning oven is a mitzvah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm steve:

haha P-90
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Gaylord Fields:

Another pedo-pop hit: "Morning Girl," by the Neon Philharmonic. How did THAT get played?
  5:43pm cheri:

well for your information, jake! IT REALLY IS my birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm ĪҠℰ:

Another DJ once remarked that most Donald Fagen songs are also pedo-rock. Is that true? I'm not much for Steely Dan.
Avatar 5:45pm dale:

oooh, this is my favorite nico song - so gothic.
  5:48pm marmalade kitty:

Happy birhtday Cheri!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Gaylord Fields:

@marmalade kitty: Hello!
Avatar 5:49pm JakeGould:

@cheri: Mazel tov, Cheri! How old are you now? Do anything else today?
  5:50pm cheri:

thank you mk, at least SOME people care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Janitor of Lunacy worked in the Pop Pedo's building - tho' they never actually troubled each other much...

Hi, everyone. What a nice day out, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm redkayak:

Avatar 5:51pm JakeGould:

@cheri: I care. How old are you now and what else did you do today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@Ken From Hyde Park: Stop teasing me!
Avatar 5:53pm JakeGould:

I actually found it quite damp outside today. So hey.
Avatar 5:54pm dale:

i love phil ochs. but i hate his voice. such a dilemma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You're film Director as DJ Mr. Fields.
  5:55pm ice in bklyn:

This has been an exceptionally perfect show. Thanks for the Ochs, Gaylord..
Avatar 5:55pm dale:

he's trying too hard with the donovan-like tremolo.
  5:56pm cheri:

Gaylord and jake , as I mentioned I had a real great day, this morning went to ihop for breakfast, seen ted 2 and got a lot of gift cards!
  5:56pm Hot Bar:

Funny how in Billy Bragg song Phil Och's says, "I never died," but in real life Phil Ochs said, "Phil Ochs is dead."
Avatar 5:57pm JakeGould:

@cheri: How old are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Huh. He was attacked & lost that voice.
  5:59pm Hot Bar:

PBS special on Ochs is excellent
  5:59pm cheri:

i'm 36 jake, why?
Avatar 6:00pm dale:

wow - the moody blues 'borrowed' that opening in 'i don't mind' on the magnificent moodys.
Avatar 6:00pm JakeGould:

@cheri: Because we’ve asked like 1/2 a dozen times when you constantly pointed out it was your birthday and you never responded that’s why. Do you donate to WFMU in any way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm steve:

you guys with your bag of fries for dinner and your iHop... now i crave junk food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm redkayak:

It's sunny today in Illinois. Feels like summer, finally. Pop the champagne!
  6:02pm cheri:

time to time jake
Avatar 6:04pm JakeGould:

@steve: I like bags of fries for dinner because growing up Polish every meal was something with potatoes.
  6:05pm P-90:

A well-deserved tribute to our Dusty! Cool idea!
Avatar 6:06pm JakeGould:

@steve: And it’s not that easy to find place that make decent latkes in NYC anymore. Damn I miss the old days of Vesalka.
  6:07pm marmalade kitty:

That's what potatoes are for!
  6:07pm cheri:

ohh Gaylord, I think dusty springfield is really cool! thanks again Gaylord, this is a treat for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Neurotic about it - but ended up w/ these wonderful arrangements/productions. Maybe neurosis pays...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm steve:

wait... Veselka's still there isn't it?
Avatar 6:09pm dale:

dust covers is still my favorite fmu premium of all time. ALL. TIME.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: Thanks!
Avatar 6:10pm JakeGould:

@steve: Yeah, but the modern Veselka's is a brunch place. The original Veselka's was more like B&H dairy or any other lunch counter. You could walk in, sit at a stool, order two blintzes, one latke and a soda and then that’s it. Now it’s a big brunch production spot.
  6:11pm cheri:

well on that note, I have to cut out just for a while, fantastic tune here Gaylord! thanks so much Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm steve:

ah... guess i haven't eaten there in ~10 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Gaylord Fields:

@cheri: Sure thing!
  6:12pm cheri:

and ty all for your birthday wishes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm steve:

i guess i agree re: latkes. but i made latkes from scratch a few weeks ago and damn they were good.
Avatar 6:12pm JakeGould:

@steve: The old Vesalka’s I’m wistful for is 20+ years gone.
Avatar 6:13pm JakeGould:

@cheri: Bye! Let us know how your bowel movement goes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: Please try to resist engaging @cheri in an antagonistic way.
Avatar 6:15pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Noted.
  6:15pm Volunteer:

Cheri is a troll that has been on here using other names in the past
  6:15pm cheri:

before I forget Gaylord, see you in two weeks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Gaylord Fields:

@Volunteer: @cheri's behavior has not crossed any lines. When it does, I'll deal.
Avatar 6:17pm dale:

oh, i miss the original kiev.
Avatar 6:20pm JakeGould:

@Dale: Yup. Sad to realize the owners if the Kiev—who took over after the father/husband died—ruined Kiev and owned the buildings that exploded across the street from it. They’re to blame for the gas line tapping.
Avatar 6:22pm dale:

wasn't that b&h dairy?
  6:22pm Tommy:

Dang , my secret is out
Avatar 6:24pm dale:

i just remember going there after being at the aztec lounge or pyramid club and drinking tons of coffee and cheap starchy food and being in total heaven. then i'd have to head back to brooklyn at 5 am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, @Tommy! I'll tell K. you stopped by!
Avatar 6:26pm JakeGould:

@dale: No. B&H Dairy is still standing. But the owners of Kiev also owned the buildings directly across the street from Kiev… Those buildings that once had “Love Saves the Day” and “Pommes Frites.’
Avatar 6:28pm dale:

ooooh, LOVED love saves the day!
Avatar 6:29pm dale:

eleven years since i lived there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Gaylord Fields:

Anyone remember the late Diamond Dairy, in the Diamond District, of course?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Jeezy:

What Distractions LP is Boys Cry on?!
Avatar 6:31pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: I heard of that. It was inside the building itself, right? And you could sit inside and look at all the diamond dealings below?
Avatar 6:32pm JakeGould:

FWIW, all of the dairy restaurants I miss are from Brighton Beach back in the 1970s and 1980s. Damn, I could either get a slice of pizza or a knish (baked) from multiple storefronts without effort back then.
  6:34pm P-90:

Leshko's was my fave down there, since the 80's when I knew lots of 20-somethings who pioneered living down there when it was still rough but affordable. I was glad to see those places hold on so long, bummed that they're finally gone. In L.A., movie biz folk from Back East would frequently wax all nostaligic and homesick for those places, they were totems of a particular NY epoch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: That was the one.
Avatar 6:35pm dale:

good show gaylord. and good refereeing.
  6:35pm Ernie Flanders:

I still live in the hope that Mary Margaret O'Hara would make a 2nd LP. I reckon she's one of those singers that only improve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Gaylord Fields:

@Jeezy: Nobody's Perfect, from 1980. (Their second album came out in 2012!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Jeezy:

Wow! Thanks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Gaylord Fields:

Linda Perhacs: First album came out in 1970; her second in 2014!
Avatar 6:38pm JakeGould:

@P-90: A good part of the reason those places are gone has little to do with gentrification and more with a cultural shift in NYC Jewish culture where suddenly knishes and Jewish “soul” were looked down upon within the culture. Even today some relatives I talk to who I mention a knish to get upset as if I am showing off my poor roots a bit too much. It’s a fairly deep reason those places aren’t around but few want to talk about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm steve:

that sounds like a very interesting list Gaylord
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Gaylord Fields:

Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends: First album, 1968; second album: 2007 (all three original members)!
  6:39pm P-90:

Linda must hold some kind of a record. For her records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

She could hold one in each hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Gaylord Fields:

Vashti Bunyan: first, 1970; second, 2005!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Gaylord Fields:

That's all off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm steve:

whats the min cutoff for the list? Charles Cohen's first release was late 80s, second came I think in the past 3-4 years.
  6:42pm P-90:

RRN63: Bazinga!
Avatar 6:43pm JakeGould:

@P-90: Was that a sequel game to “Yahtzee!”?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Gaylord Fields:

@steve: If it took longer than MBV, you qualify.
  6:45pm cheri:

well Gaylord, it's been fun and a pleasure to be here and also thanks for being on my side. again see you in two weeks!
  6:45pm P-90:

Had no idea Vashti Bunyan's recording career was shaped like that. Fascinating. (Or "vashtinating")
Avatar 6:46pm Monica:

@cheri: I'm on the side of fair play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Gaylord Fields:

@Monica: I am beyond happy to hear from you!
  6:49pm P-90:

All hail DJ Monica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Msr. Lateef helped Coltrane find his way Spiritually, iirc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Īke:

@Jake@6:38, interesting. My WASP grandmother wouldn't listen to country & western music for a similar reason. She was from North Carolina and it reminded her too much of her poor upbringing. She wanted to be more sophisticated. BTW, Brighton Beach still has great food, but now it's things like adjaruli khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread boats with a whole egg, etc.).
Avatar 6:50pm Monica:

likewise, gaylord! better than a/c on a sweltering day. better than overhead fans in a sub-tropical zone. better than ice cubes on a summer night. and hey and howdy, P-90!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@Monica: You silver-tongued devil, you!
  6:52pm cheri:

Avatar 6:53pm Monica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Gaylord Fields:

  6:55pm marmalade kitty:

having no food at all! imagine that
Great show gaylord
  6:55pm Santos L Halper:

Great show Gaylord! Thanks for the Dusty x4 and everything else
  6:55pm cheri:

thanks very much monica
Avatar 6:55pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Yeah, Brighton Beach still has great food. But honestly, it’s no longer the world I grew up in and I’m not into what it’s become. And yeah, one dirty secret about American cuisine is the second a cultural group can pull itself out of the true lower class, they tend to abandon things like food. I have relatives in my family who I know grew up eating knishes but now talk about falafel and pita bread as if that his what they grew up on. Fairly sick social issue of status if you ask me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@marmalade kitty: Not even a potato?

@Santos L Halper: The pleasure is mine!
Avatar 6:57pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Which is all to say, just wait until the kids in Sunset Park’s Chinatown grow up and move out… The place will change overnight and memories of the food carts will go along with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

☆ episode (again)
  7:00pm P-90:

JakeG: Interesting perspective, but I recall those places as having more of a generically "Slavic" identity, rather than "Jewish Old Country" per se. I actually knew some kids from Russian/Polish/etc. Catholic backgrounds who thought of those places as "roots" cuisine for them too. Mostly it was cheap, substantial food for students and young musician/artist types. And open late.
