Hank Mobley's cool.
Avatar 3:27pm Irwin:

Lee Morgan trumpet on this Mobley album.
  3:31pm jan:

Just lovely: Fate in a Pleasant Mood. Thanks for this introduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Blacktooth:

That "Jazz Messengers" hard-bop comp you put together still gets regular play on my way to work in NYC. It's like, the quintessential "get on the train and go to work" album.
Avatar 3:35pm V Priceless:

great track - is Roy on this? Mind going....
  3:37pm Mark:

Love that whole era Blacktooth--all the early Blue Note years, the first Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock records too!
  3:40pm phat:

This isn't a waltz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Blacktooth:

@Mark - Agreed! For lack of a better description, I liken it to the "punk rock" of jazz. Not the best metaphor, I realize. But, I think (among other things) it's the speed of the music that I dig. Just fast, fast, fast...
Avatar 3:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the 4/4 Waltz...
  3:44pm Jack:

Thanks Irwin! I was wondering what song you'd play by Arwen Lewis today ; I love them all. Great songs. Beautifully done. (dare I say maybe better than...?)
Avatar 3:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- indeed does a great album justice - throws light on it even.
  3:49pm Donald Trump:

No funny picture on the playlist? I want my donation back.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Donald Trump - You want to see a funny picture? Go check your bathroom mirror.
  3:58pm Jack:

I hope this song has many many more verses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Alison Porchnik:

That's better.
  4:01pm phat:

Primus? That's funny.

  4:07pm ScottC:

Used to work with Primus a little bit... This was early on and I wasn't too familiar with them. A guy comes in with the new album art and I thought he was a messenger. I talked to him for about 20 mins and go the impression he was a roadie or a guitar tech or something. I ask him how long he had worked with the band and he says " I've been the guitarist for a long time" moral of the story - know what your clients look like!
  4:13pm P-90:

Great show as usual, now with Funny Playlist Picture. Who could ask for anything more? And I'm wondering which FMU show is gonna score an interview, maybe even live set, with Arwen...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Mike East:

dang is that what I missed on Irene's show last night?! I was busy doing other peoples work for them. Whatta drag. That was really cool. I gotta check the archive

Avatar 4:26pm Irwin:

Yes, great (pre-recorded) performance by Eszter last night on Irene's program. Playlist: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 4:27pm Irwin:

Thanks to rrg for the Toots.
  4:39pm P-90:

Now HERE's some "high-velocity" Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Mike East:

McCoy Tyner was here on Monday...there was a very strange issue involving blood on the keyboard, which is a bit mysterious
Avatar 4:41pm Irwin:

Ron Carter, bass, Elvin Jones, drums.
  4:41pm Donald Trump:

Mike: Obviously, pianos bleed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Carmichael:

Awesomeness, piano.
Avatar 4:44pm Irwin:

I love half of this Janis tune -- the half she doesn't sing.
Avatar 4:46pm jagman:

wow, been awhile since I heard this..
Avatar 4:46pm Irwin:

Great band backing her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm coelacanth:

greetings Irwin and all

i agree with you; but she sure had good bands, and good taste in music.
  4:47pm P-90:

@Mike East: He returned a keyboard with blood on it? Or did he claim it came from you that way?
Avatar 4:47pm TDK60:

I saw her with Kozmic Blues band, hot!, and it's not a well-known album.
Avatar 4:49pm Irwin:

Was never a fan of her overwrought wailing. But then, I don't like Aretha either.
Avatar 4:50pm jagman:

without the alchohol She could not do itl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Alison Porchnik:

Ooh! My eye! My eye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Webhamster Henry:

Brian Dewan comes to Monty Hall on August 8th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Carmichael:

Kozmic Blues band horn section:

Terry Clements - tenor saxophone
Cornelius Flowers - baritone saxophone
Luis Gasca - trumpet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Alison Porchnik:

Oh, not my eye. Nevermind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm coelacanth:

hmm. i agree with you there too- and diana ross... all 3 have proven to be very unpopular opinions. (especially in a college town, where folks are just learning new music, and don't know a lot of these singers' contemporaries.)
Avatar 4:53pm Irwin:

Brian Dewan at Monty Hall Aug 8: www.ticketfly.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Mike East:

@P90 - they said it wasn't his, but my coworker had been playing that piano just before the rehearsal, and there was no blood on it when he finished. We threw an upright in the room to make them happy, so it worked out okay. Weird situation...which we are used to around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm coelacanth:

i hope he's alright.
  5:07pm P-90:

RIP Kozmic Blues and Big Brother guitarist, arranger, songwriter Sam Andrew, someone else we lost in just the first half of this year.
Janis originally sang in a much more traditional blues style, the "overwrought wailing" was insisted upon by bandmates and management, because they considered it a style that their audience at the time would embrace. Janis herself was never totally comfortable with that style, but it and she were def embraced...
Avatar 5:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always thot no one made you feel more faster than Janis Joplin. She had a big loud voice. She influenced more male Rock singers than is generally credited...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm coelacanth:

P-90 i've heard a few early recordings of Janis in a bar or café, covering "traditional" blues in a "traditional" style...by far my favorite of what i've heard of her. (which is a lot)
  5:13pm Laura L:

Thanks for this Clientele, Irwin.
Avatar 5:13pm Irwin:

Great to hear this again. Any version.
  5:19pm Mark:

Wow Johanna's got a pretty voice doesn't she?
Avatar 5:20pm Irwin:

I'd never heard of Johanna before last night. Irene raved about her, sent over some tracks. Real impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Webhamster Henry:

I like fast breaking artists on WFMU.
  5:25pm Mark:

You play more jazz than any of the other DJs. It's one of the things about your show I really enjoy. I like Sam Rivers a lot, but the only recording of him that I have is Tony Williams's "Life Time" album. He really plays great on it, though.
  5:26pm Listening Out There:

Great bass solo on "Beatrice"
Avatar 5:27pm Irwin:

Ron Carter again.
Avatar 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There's 'Destination Out' - three hours Modern Jazz on the Drummer stream Wed. A.M.s. Irwin picks tasty stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Alison Porchnik:

In other news, somebody left a pair of legs in the bushes near the New Haven train station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm dale:

i was listening to a mighty wind soundtrack yesterday. another brilliant musical parody
Avatar 5:28pm MikeY:

LOL my wifes an my song
Avatar 5:29pm Irwin:

Alison: They're always in the last place you look.
Avatar 5:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Long Rally' features Jazz...
  5:33pm Mark:

I read once that Ron Carter has played on over 400 albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Mike East:

Ron Carter is still playing quite a bit...big band, trio, everything in between. Real fine fellow. Very friendly, if you show him respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Carmichael:

@Dale: Blood on the Coal is one of my favorites from that album.
Avatar 5:37pm Jeff:

Ron Carter is one of the very few bass players I seek out by name when looking for recordings and dates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm dale:

always make sure your train goes in the right hole.
Avatar 5:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...haven't played a track I don't like this week, & time's runnin' out yerknow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Alison Porchnik:

Ahh, CVB takes me back to my youth!
  5:58pm Listening Out There:

Thanks, Mr. Irwin Sir
  5:58pm P-90:

The Bobby Hart screening and appearance at Monty Hall was really something, it left me in a lingering good mood for days.
