Ambrosia Parsley & The Elegant Too live on WFMU

Live performance by Ambrosia Parsley and The Elegant Too (Chris Maxwell, guitar & vocal; Phil Hernandez, percussion)
After her tune with Shivaree, "Good Night Moon," became a huge hit playing under the credits for "Kill Bill 2," Ambrosia Parsley retreated into the world of child-rearing and solo performance. Parsley's voice is equal parts smoke and silkiness, and she's performed for bright lights from Laurie Anderson to Chuck D to Hal Wilner. There were several failed attempts to release a solo album, and a French label finally released Ambrosia's "Weeping Cherry," in 2013. Now it's been released in the US on Barbès Records and Ambrosia Parsley and the Elegant Too performed some of the album's dark, sweet songs on Irene's show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Irene Trudel:

Very quiet tonight! Hope someof you are listening in for Ambrosia Parsley, who will be up in a few minutes.
  9:24pm jon:

evening irene.

i hope evryone got to hear shirley at least once live. we saw her three times and one of those was in dc. a master performer
  9:25pm Andrew:

Had to catch the archives last week, but I am listening live tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm common:

nice sounds, irene! thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Irene Trudel:

Hi jon, Andrew & common! I never had the chance to see Shirley live unfortunately. What a great vocal style she had-- so laid back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm melinda:

I'm not familiar with Ambrosia Parsley but the name is appealing. Will be listening!
Avatar 9:29pm listener mark:

Hi Irene
  9:32pm JakeGould:

Hello world of the show!
  9:36pm Hugh:

Good evening, Irene,
As always, me, my cat, and fine tunes, with you.
Avatar 9:40pm Mary Wing:

So glad that Ambrosia's at the station!!
  9:43pm Peter K.:

Ambrosia sounds great. Don't forget to ask her about her days singing the news on Air America!
Avatar 9:45pm Mary Wing:

And please ask if she is going to have any old music for sale at the Rockwood show? I'm presuming we can buy the new CD, but I'd like to get hard copies of her other stuff.
  9:55pm JakeGould:

Is “Ambrosia Parsley” anything like Grady’s famous wild parsley from his little community garden? www.youtube.com...
  10:02pm JakeGould:

That is Grady from Sanford and Son. And the quotes are not needed for Ambrosia Parsley.
  10:08pm KP:

Nice nice nice
  10:11pm JakeGould:

Lovely stuff despite my snarkiness.
  10:15pm JakeGould:

Grady’s parsley was marijuana but Grady was stupid. Rollo knew it was marijuana. Okay! Her real name is lovely, all snarkiness aside.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm redkayak:

Evening all.....just tuning in :)

@JakeGould: Don't make me send my bloodthirsty hordes of name-defending vigilantes after you.
  10:28pm KP:

That was well produced Serge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Gaylord Fields:

And don't go around thinking those Sanford and Son references will save you! (Okay, maybe a little.)
Avatar 10:33pm Mary Wing:

These are all great songs; those folks got good taste!
  10:35pm JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: I kid, I kid… The songs were lovely and her name is too. But I saw the opportunity to mention Grady on a message board in 2015 and had to take it. Forgive me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: My decree: Released with time served. Case dismissed.
  10:40pm Nate Dogg:

Music mellowing my mind.
  10:41pm P-90:

Maybe THE all-time #1 doo-wop song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Gaylord Fields:

This set is killing it, and me along with it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Crud cakes! I was getting groceries in a store without wifi and I missed Ambrosia Parsley. And I can't find the butter that I bought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Tome:

HI ... swoooooooooonnnn .. lovin' it Irene !
  10:43pm JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Phew! At least I don’t have to have a date with Aunt Esther. Because Fred was right… She’s ugly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Irene Trudel:

@Jake, you can quote Sanford & Son any time here! My hubby Peter & I have been catching up with the reruns and they still hold up pretty well. They give me good belly laughs!
Avatar 10:45pm Van in DC:

Hi Irene. Gosh, I guess it's Tuesday again already.

At least I made it in time for a little of this Floyd...

  10:47pm JakeGould:

@Irene: Yup! I actually converted all 6 seasons from DVD to iPhone compatible format so I am catching up with what I watched as a kid. My favorite running joke is now Lamont constantly trying to downplay the garbage aspect; he works in “commodities.”
Avatar 10:48pm Van in DC:

I had this eerie feeling, like when you leave home and you just know you are forgetting something? Like your keys or something?

Yep. That's the feeling I had tonight. Finally clicked in...
Avatar 10:53pm Van in DC:

Well yay, at least I get to hear Ambrosia Parsley tonight before catching up on archive later...
Avatar 10:56pm Van in DC:

Any pics by chance of Ambrosia performing...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Irene Trudel:

@Jake, I love the episode in which they're trying to sell some records to a collector for some large sum, and they get run over by the truck. Van, glad you got to hear some of Ambrosia. Lovely stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Irene Trudel:

I will post some pics I hope by tomorrow.
Avatar 11:00pm Van in DC:

So I was half asleep already and WAKE UP YOU'RE MISSING IRENE! kicked in. I could have swore you said you were about to play another Ambrosia? I guess I missed out but I'll be back on archive.

This is Kat...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I liked Fred's running joke about the drawer full of glasses and every pair he tried on wasn't right for him.
Avatar 11:02pm Van in DC:

Love Mr. Young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Tome:

... esp when he does a number like this,, just melts ,, otherwise love all of his stuff
  11:04pm JakeGould:

Fred and Lamont make an ethnomusicology donation. Blind Mellow Jelly’s son says, “I want my daddy’s records!” www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm common:

thanks for playing harvest moon irene. always makes me cry. just did.
Avatar 11:09pm Van in DC:

Funny, I was listening to SVE's Are We There album earlier tonight at a BWW, at the bar, in my earbuds, and I kid you not, when "I Love You But I'm Lost" came on, I actually started to tear up. What a beautiful and sad song.

I so love SVE.
  11:12pm JakeGould:

@Ken: Yes! The drawer filled with used glasses!
  11:16pm comatose:

Avatar 11:17pm Van in DC:

The Mark Fosson was terrific too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: My favorite Fred/Lamont exchange is from an early episode, when a fed-up Lamont threatens to go to an employment agency to find more fulfilling work:

Lamont: "I want to get me a job where I can use my head as well as my hands."

Fred: "They'll put a cap on your head and a broom in your hands!"
  11:19pm comatose:

Red Foxx is missed.
  11:20pm comatose:

Redd Foxx *
Avatar 11:21pm Van in DC:

Seems like many of my favorite female artists are all in Europe right now. Austra (and the AMAZING Katie Stelmanis!!!!), Torres, Sharon Van Etten (SVE), Eliza Rickman, Hilary Hahn, and probably Marissa Nadler still...
  11:23pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Mopportunities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Then there's the episode where Fred admitted that he sneaked into (his future wife) Elizabeth's room one night. Maybe he said the second room on the left. Then Aunt Ester says "My room was the second room on the left." What a scene!
Avatar 11:24pm Van in DC:

This is like if you took Tangerine Dream and ran one of their tunes through a humidifier.

Or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm common:

hee hee gaylord and jakegould and ken!
Avatar 11:27pm Van in DC:

No. Not Tangerine Dream.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Gaylord Fields:

I can't believe I'm the first to contribute this perfect S&S line:

Fred (to Esther): "I could stick your face in some dough and make some gorilla cookies!"
Avatar 11:30pm Van in DC:

Yes! This is classic David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Steve Jansen...
  11:31pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: in that same episode, Fred says this is how he’ll find new help for the junkyard: “I’m gonna change the sign from ‘Sanford and Son’ to ‘Sanford and Anybody’.”
Avatar 11:31pm Van in DC:

oh, and Richard Barbieri... all kind of watered down through the humidifier.

I nailed it
  11:32pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Boom! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:32pm Van in DC:

For the record, I LOVED Japan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm common:

hee! once again!
  11:36pm JakeGould:

One of my favorite episodes is when they watch TV and see a show on called, “Steinberg and Son” which is just 100% the same as their life… But the father and son are Jewish.
Avatar 11:36pm Van in DC:

Irene, if you ever want to venture out to the Japan world...David Sylvian, after he left Japan, recorded two incredible albums: Brilliant Trees, and the jaw dropping double LP Gone To Earth. Both are in my top drawer recommendations.
  11:37pm JakeGould:

“You hear that Naomi darling? It's all my fault. I should of had a heart attack after Murray graduated High School.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: That line is laugh-evoking enough when you just read it, and then it becomes pee-pants hysterical when Redd Foxx recites it with his can't-be-unfunny comic voice and timing!
  11:40pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: The sad thing with Redd Foxx is that when he actually died he was having a heart attack on the set of some show and they just thought it was schtick at first.
  11:41pm JakeGould:

And the Jewish description of Aunt Ethel? “She looks like an arab ran over her face with a tank.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Gaylord Fields:

I recall that Rollo (the Eddie Haskell of Watts) was somehow involved in the production of Steinberg and Son by ripping off Fred & Lamont's bio and feeding the details to his cousin or such.
Avatar 11:42pm Van in DC:

Mark Isham was pretty heavily involved with Japan and Sylvian as well. Nowadays he is just a TV sound guy. He used to be really good and talented. Not so much these days I don't think.
  11:46pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Exactly, “I couldn't break into television with any of my ideas, and then I heard about these 2 people from my cousin Rollo. See the son was a nothing and the father was a nothing who yelled at the son all the time. But no matter what, those two nothings really loved each other.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for the recommendations, Van. And thanks Jake & Gaylord for all the memories of Redd Foxx/ Sanford & Son. Love it!

Of all the clones from Orphan Black, this dance would totally be Alison lol #cloneclub
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I must amend my comment from 11:24. It wasn't Fred who sneaked in, but it was some guy who was claiming to be Lamont's real father.

Fab show as always, Irene, great set from Ambrosia Parsley and nice playlist from The Elegant Too, obviously has great taste by having a Todd track included!
Avatar 9:36am Van in DC:

Back to listen to everything I missed, you know, just to make for a fantastic Friday!!

And what do I do? Accidentally click on the live stream rather than this show and AAAAGGGGHHHH!!! Some HORRIBLE noise from some "Dangerous for the brain" show! BLECH!

The soothing relief of this show is immensely helping relieve the searing brain pain.
Avatar 10:04am Van in DC:

What a great first set! Had forgotten what a fantastic voice Sharon Kraus has, thanks.
Avatar 10:58am Van in DC:

So after hearing of BB King's passing, I've put this program on pause while I listen to The King
